s our country grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, the threat of the pandemic will become more complicated by increasing cases of the flu, making more people ill and putting further strain on the U.S. health care system.

Pediatric epidemiologist and infectious disease specialist Dr. Emily Godbout from Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU offers five crucial reasons everyone should get a flu shot this year.

1. FLU SHOTS HELP REDUCE SERIOUS RESPIRATORY ILLNESS While some people who get vaccinated may still contract influenza, the flu shot typically prevents about 70 of 100 people who receive it from developing a moderate to severe flu infection. So even though the vaccine might not completely prevent the flu, it can help keep you from getting sick enough that you have to go to the hospital.

“Reducing the overall burden of respiratory illnesses is really important to help protect vulnerable populations at risk for severe disease,” said Godbout, “And it also helps lessen the resulting burden on our health care system, which is crucial throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Godbout said that while practices people follow to help guard against COVID-19, such as handwashing, social distancing and wearing masks, will probably help decrease the spread of influenza, the flu shot is still the single most effective way to reduce the spread of the flu.

2. FLU SHOTS ARE SAFE “The flu shot is very safe and effective at helping prevent severe disease and hospitalization,” Godbout said. “I know people might have reservations about coming into the doctor’s office, but I can assure everyone that our providers are really vigilant about taking appropriate precautions to make sure everyone is safe.”

The doctor also pointed out that patients will not contract influenza from the vaccine. “The virus is inactivated,” she said, “so it can’t actually cause the flu infection after you get the shot.”

Flu shots are recommended for anyone six months old and older.

3. FLU SHOTS ARE UPDATED EVERY YEAR “The U.S. flu vaccine is reviewed every single year and updated to match circulating flu viruses,” said Godbout. “The flu vaccine can typically protect against three or four different viruses. Since the virus changes from year to year, immunization or natural infection from the previous year is not protective.”

4. INFLUENZA AND COVID-19 SHARE SOME OVERLAPPING SYMPTOMS It’s important to know that some symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza are similar. If you have symptoms you are concerned about, it’s best to call your health care provider right away. You may need to be tested for both the flu and COVID-19 to be certain what is causing you to be sick, so your doctor can recommend the best course of treatment.

While having the flu shot doesn’t mean you can’t get the flu, as discussed above, a vaccination will at least lessen the severity of your symptoms - giving you and your loved ones peace of mind.

Reducing the spread of flu cases overall, by getting vaccinated, will help cut down on the number of seriously ill patients that clinics and hospitals need to diagnose and treat, which will help everyone get through the winter season more easily.

5. A FLU SHOT PROTECTS YOU THROUGHOUT THE SEASON Now is a good time to get vaccinated. It takes a couple of weeks for antibodies to develop in your body, but the vaccination will continue to protect you throughout the worst months of the flu season.

Godbout said, “We will continue to offer the flu shot throughout the fall and winter.”

By now, most seniors are aware that they’re among the most vulnerable demographic groups when it comes to contracting COVID-19.

A recent nationwide poll by Tivity health, a national provider of senior fitness & programs, such as Silver Sneakers, indicates many seniors are not getting the exercise they need to maintain optimal health.

Silver Sneakers, provides community fitness programs for older adults with free access to participating Health Clubs like Bodyplex Blue Ridge.

In the recent poll, 46% of adult & senior respondents said the pandemic is preventing them from attending in-person exercise classes at local gyms; 84% noted they will return within a month once attendance is deemed safe.

In light of such finding, & the overall impact of COVID-19, the world health organization, IHRSA has launch a Global Active & Fit commitment for Health Clubs around the word, ensuring Health Clubs who become certified are up to code on safety guidelines & cleaning protocols.

Exercise remains critical for seniors to maintain a healthy immune system able to fight off disease. Regular workouts can also increase balance & strength & help prevent falls.

For seniors, falls are an all-too-common threat & crisis; John’s Hopkins University reports that 25% of adults 65+ fall, & 3 million are treated in emergency rooms each year for injuries caused by falls.

Seniors can feel a little safer now about starting back working out, which is extremely important during & post COVID-19. If you’re a senior wanting to start working out, here are some tips you can follow while practicing social distancing.

START SLOWLY.

GET MOVING.

If you haven’t been exercising, you’ll want to ease into your new routine gradually. Studies indicate just 2 weeks of inactivity can decrease your muscle strength by 8% & raise inflammation & blood pressure. Do something that relaxes you. For example, getting outside & into nature can be a great way to start moving & prepare yourself for future exercise.

Even if you must set a timer to remind yourself, take frequent breaks from sitting & take part in activities that involve standing. Avoid being sedentary for long intervals of time. A good goal is 30-45 minutes a day at least 5 days a week. There’ll will be days when you don’t want to do it, but research shows that physical activity is good for your immune system. Whether it’s taking a walk, or riding a bike, find something you like to do and find a time every day that works for you; then it will becom a healthy habit.

USE OTHERS FOR MOTIVATION. In the Tivity poll, 44% of seniors said they’re motivated to return to their fitness center to socialize with friends.

Socializing with people you care about can lower stress & be good for your immune system. Stephanie Betts, CPT, & Wellness Coach at Bodyplex Fitness in Blue Ridge says most Health Clubs have opened back up & provided more space for group classes in order to meet social distancing requirements & urges her members to participate in these small groups whenever possible to get the best mental and physical benefits.

Stephanie suggested basic workout plan: (1) Warming up with a short walk (2) Start with balance and stabilization exercises like a plank (3) Then strength exercises like chair squats & wall push-ups (4) Move on to light weightlifting or Machines when ready (5) Last stretch and foam roll worked or sore muscles

Vitamin C The Super Nutrient

V

itamin C is an essential water soluble nutrient, also known as L-ascorbic acid, that the body can’t make so it is an essential dietary nutrient, which means it must be consumed for good health to be maintained, or deficiency and disease will result.

It is naturally present in some common foods like citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes and tomato juice, potatoes, red peppers, green peppers, kiwi, broccoli, strawberries, Brussel sprouts, and cantaloupe.

The body requires vitamin C to make collagen, L-carnitine (used in ) and certain neurotransmitters.

It is an essential component of connective tissue which is why it is critical in wound healing. Vitamin C is also an important antioxidant (3) and has been shown to regenerate other antioxidants within the body., including Vitamin E. (4) Research is being conducted to study whether Vitamin C, by limiting the damaging effect of free radicals through its antioxidant activity, might help prevent or delay the development of certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, and other diseases where oxidative stress plays a causal role.

Vitamin C also improves the absorption of a form of iron called non-heme iron (5), the form present in plant=based foods, our biggest dietary source.

(5) It can play a role in preventing anemia, one of the most common illnesses in today’s world. Of particular importance currently is that it also has an important role in immune function. The highest levels of Vitamin C in the body are found in our white blood cells, as well as eyes, adrenal glands (key in stress management), pituitary gland (hormonal regulation), and the brain. There is evidence that it is protective against susceptibility to illness, and some researchers advocate that high-dose Vitamin C can be a very effective treatment for bacterial and even viral infections. In China it is being studied as another possible treatment for the coronavirus.

The recommended intake is described as the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance), per the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) is as follows: for adult (19+ years) males: 90 mg/ day and for females: 75 mg/day. If you smoke, you

require 35 mg/day more than non-smokers. Other factors also probably increase the need for Vitamin C, such as alcohol intake, and toxin exposure.

Consuming five servings of fruits and vegetables/ day can provide more than 200mg of vitamin C, but since many of us do not eat this regularly it is an easy vitamin to take vitamin C supplements.

One effective way to do this is to dissolve granular vitamin C into water and sip on this throughout the day. Since vitamin C is water soluble and not stored as fat-soluble vitamins are, this is an excellent way to ensure that the body gets a regular infusion of this vital and protective nutrient, and help maintain a strong immune system in this coronavirus pandemic.

Heat oven to 400 F. In large bowl, mix grapefruit juice, oil, garlic powder, cumin, paprika and red pepper until combined. Add chicken to bowl and turn to coat. Refrigerate 30 minutes or longer.

To make salsa fresca: In medium bowl, mix grapefruit segments, jicama, red onion, grapefruit juice, olive oil, cilantro and jalapeno pepper until combined.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Remove chicken from marinade. Place chicken in baking dish. Bake 25-30 minutes until chicken is cooked through.

Serve chicken with salsa fresca.
