With over half a dozen wineries surrounding Helen, you can also enjoy spectacular mountain views while appreciating the taste of these award winning grapes grown in the rich clay soil.

The picturesque Sautee– Nacoochee Mound at Hardman Farm is a favorite landmark in north Georgia. Guided house tours of this original 1870 Italianate architecture home are part of Georgia State Park with a one mile Heritage Trail along the river to Helen.

Nearby Nora Mill Granary & Grist Mill was established in 1876 and still in operation with a live miller making grits, cornmeal and flour mixes beside the beautiful waterfall along the Chattahoochee River.

Scenic attractions are located all around Helen that offer hiking trails, beautiful overlooks, and winding wilderness roads at every turn. Surrounding White County are some of the highest mountain peaks with Tray Mountain that is not only the 6thhighest mountain in Georgia, but connects with the Appalachian Trail. Amazing Yonah Mountain stands tall at 3,143 ft., located between Helen and Cleveland and is rimmed by sheer picturesque cliffs.

North of Helen is Unicoi State Park that offers miles of streams and trails for unlimited fishing, hiking and biking opportunities.

This gem of Georgia is tucked away on State Highway 356 and features 1,050-acres of wilderness. The centerpiece of the park boasts the 53-acre Unicoi Lake on Smith Creek and Anna Ruby Falls. Visitors enjoy the easy walk up to view these 150-foot twin waterfalls from Curtis and York Creek that merge to form Smith Creek.

Just south of Helen is beautiful Sautee Nacochee Village. Step back in time with many historical landmarks such as the Old Sautee Store built in 1872 that has a museum of authentic store goods. Just minutes down the road is Stovall Mill Covered Bridge built in 1895, a one lane wood bridge that lays

ahlonega Georgia is a charming town rich with history of the first major U.S. Gold rush in 1828. There is more to this town than it’s “golden history” with wineries, downtown shops and restaurants. Outdoor venues have beautiful mountain vistas, roaring waterfalls, and hiking trails. The following are just a few of the highlights when visiting Dahlonega.

Dahlonega Gold Museum - The Historic 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse is the home to Dahlonega Gold Museum where visitors can see rare gold coins, artifacts, and history of the area. From huge gold nuggets, to maps of the mines, to a document signed by the 10th President of the United States- the Gold Museum features objects that brilliantly display the charm and the history of Dahlonega.

Crisson Gold Mine – Home to the only working Stamp Mill in Georgia dated to the 1800’s; this has been used at several mines in the Dahlonega area and in other states. Placed on the site in the 1960’s, it has ten stamps with each one weighing 450 lbs. each. The purpose of the Stamp Mill is to crush gold bearing rock into sand so it can be processed. See how this mine has contributed to our State Capital and how you can pan for gold plus gemstones at the mine.

Wineries and Vineyards - Home to several wine tasting rooms and over five wineries, Dahlonega offers a variety of award-winning wines to locals and visitors from all over the world. Its fertile, mineral-rich soil produces versatile lines of European, French hybrids, and American wine grapes. These venues offer tours, tastings, and impressive scenic views. During seasonal times of the year, annual events like the Dahlonega Wine Trail Weekend; are held every August, to tour each venue.

Historic Downtown and Special Events - Dahlonega’s historic public square is the hub of the county’s thriving tourism activity. Lined with brick sidewalks, shops, galleries, and restaurants these charming historical 19th century buildings bring a quaint feeling to any visitor. Entertainment and Festivals are an integral part of Dahlonega’s heritage and it’s not unusual to hear musicians jamming on the square or see artists with their sketch pads taking part in the outdoor beauty.

During the holiday’s, an Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration is held in December with lighting of luminaries, festivities, carolers, and Santa on the Square.

The Holly Theater - built in 1946 has something to offer for entertainment to locals and tourists alike.

The relaxed informal atmosphere makes the theater a great place to enjoy a show for music, comedy or theatre performance. Originally used as a movie house and continued through the 80’s, it was restored with community effort in the 1990’s and re-dedicated as The Holly Theatre Community Center, Inc. and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Amicalola State Park & Lodge is an 829 acre Georgia State Park located just outside of Dahlonega on GA Highway 52. The park’s name is derived from a Cherokee word meaning “tumbling waters”. This park has camping, hiking, picnic shelters, group shelters, trout fishing, geocaching and ranger programs.

Twelve miles of hiking trails surround the entryway to the Appalachian Trail. Lodging facilities offer nice accommodations and dining with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

Appalachian Trail and Waterfalls - Dahlonega is home to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail, a 2,100 plus mile hiking trail that extends up the eastern United States from Georgia to Maine. The famous trail starts on Springer Mountain which is located just a few miles from the in Amicalola State Park & Lodge.

Amicalola Falls is the highest waterfall in the Eastern U.S. at an awe-inspiring 729 feet.

Numerous Activities - The outdoor views in the Chattahoochee National Forest area are spectacular driving in the mountains, relaxing by Chestatee River fishing, kayaking, swimming, or tubing. Additional recreation includes golfing, horseback riding and ATV trails. Spend time in a cabin for the week or stay for a weekend. Other leisure activities such as Jolie Day Spa offer relaxing massages, spa & salon services.

Top of Bell Mountain Have you ever wanted to feel on Top of the World?

Just head to Hiawassee and Bell Mountain Park Historical Site.

Originally Bell Mountain was very prominent rising 3,424 foot of elevation from the “Enchanted Valley” of Hiawassee. Then in the early 1960’s Bell Mountain’s land was purchased to mine for its minerals, and the top was left with a wide gap at the knob.

After the mining, Mr. Hal Herrin partner of the Hiawassee Land Company, then later Mountain Realty purchased it in an effort to preserve it from future mining.

Bell Mountain primarily became a home for sunset hikes and later on, a place for Jeeps, Hang gliders and other off-road enthusiasts. The mountain also became vandalized at the top with spray paint graffiti from kids and people who took advantage of the remote location that was not monitored.

The Hal Herrin Estate graciously donated the 18 acre Bell Mountain Summit to Towns County. in 2016. Today, it has paved the road, established parking area, and in addition to the Hal Herrin Scenic Overlook erected a 2nd platform that offers 360 degree views of the surrounding lake and mountains.

From Highway 76 – Turn on Shake Rag Rd. and go slow (Speed limit is five MPH.) Hours are 8 AM - 8 PM, and is Closed during inclement weather.

Cherokee Botanical Sanctuary

Along the Quanassee Path between Spikebuck Mound/Quanassee Town site and the Cherokee Homestead Exhibit is the Cherokee Botanical Sanctuary. This section of the Quanassee Path may be accessed across from Clay County Veterans Recreation Park on Anderson Street or at the Cherokee Homestead Exhibit.

This 0.3 mile section of the trail, which follows Town Creek adjacent to Clay County Schools’ property, is a pedestrian-friendly trail through stands of native trees and plants. Native plants were added along this portion of the trail to include those used by the Cherokee for medicine, food, and daily living activities. The Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition donated native plants and

helped to remove invasive plant species from the creek beds. Restoration Coordinator Tony Ward explains, “The HRWC was happy to use Duke Energy Funding to help make the vegetation along the trail more like what people living in Quanassee might have seen along the creek. Native trees and shrubs are better for water quality, too.” The Conservation Fund’s Creating New Economies Program provided funds for additional native plants, informational kiosks and plant labels.

Beautiful trails are yours to explore in the great outdoors of the North Georgia Mountains. Just pack a snack and plenty of water, get your gear ready and go for a hike.

Ellijay THREE FORKS Trail: To the left (North) on the trail is Long Creek Falls (2.3 miles round trip) . To the right is a beautiful section of old growth forest along Stover Creek.

Directions: Take 52 East from Ellijay about 4.8 miles. Turn left on Big Creek Road at the Dollar General. Follow this road about 15.4 miles (the final .4 miles are dirt) to Forest Service 58 and turn Right. This road follows Noontootla Creek to Three Forks. Parking is available where the trails cross the road.

Blue Ridge FREE KNOB LOOP Trail: 2.5 miles, easy rating Directions from Blue Ridge, Georgia: Travel east (toward Blairsville, GA) on GA Hwy 515, approx. 0.8 miles past intersection with GA Hwy 5. Turn Right at Windy Ridge Rd., go 0.2 miles to dead end with Old U.S. 76. Turn left, go 0.2 miles to Aska Road on right. Continue south on Aska Read to Shallowford Bridge.

Turn left across river and immediate right on dirt-gravel road leading to Dial, GA. At 0.4 miles come to point where trail enters road from forest. Continue east on road to parking area at 1.2 miles.

Suches JARRARD GAP TRAIL Trail: 1.0 mile, easy/moderate rating Directions: Take US 19 and 129 south from Blairsville Georgia for 9.5 miles. Turn right (west) onto GA 180 and go 7 miles to the main entrance to Lake Winfield Scott Campground.

Turn left into the campground. Follow this road over a hill and continue straight ahead into a gravel parking lot at the foot of the hill.

From the parking lot, hike along the paved road passing the guard rail at the head of the lake. The trailhead is on the right of the road just past the guard rails.

Blairsville SOSEBEE COVER TRAIL Trail: Traveling through a second-growth cove hardwood forest, the 0.25 mile Sosebee Cove Trail is rated easy and receives moderate use.

This area is a memorial to Arthur Woody, who served as the first Forest Service Ranger in Georgia.

Directions: from Blairsville Georgia, travel 9.5 miles south along US 19/129 and turn right (west) onto GA 180. Continue along GA 180 for 2 miles to the Sosebee Cove parking lot on the right.

Hiawassee HIGH SHOALS CREEK

Trail: The two waterfalls on High Shoals Creek are the highlight of this 170 acre site. A 1.2 mile trail takes visitors from FS 283 down to the falls.

Trail: This is an easy hike, but the view is well worth it! The main trail up to Anna Ruby falls is only about a half a mile one-way and it is paved, with some steps. The falls are definitely worth the hike! If you’re more adventurous, there’s a singletrack trail that continues on for about 5 more miles beyond the end of the pavement. There’s a $2 access fee.

Directions: Take 75 South from Hiawassee turn right onto Indian Grave Gap Road, graveled Forest Service Road 283 which leads visitors through the Swallow Creek Wildlife Management Area to the High Shoals Creek Falls Scenic Area.

Dahlonega YAHOOLA CREEK Trail: This is about a 4 mile trail that circles Yahoola Creek Reservoir but also swerves back into the woods a ways. This trail is surprisingly tough with many short, steep climbs in the back hills. While this is a wide doubletrack trail that isn’t always very entertaining, this trail is right on the edge of town and is very easy-to-access. It’s great for a short after work hike or trail run without having to drive all the way up to the Appalachian Trail.

Directions: from Dahlonega go north past the Walmart on the “bypass.” Go straight through the stop light at the entrance to Walmart, and straight through the stoplight at the junction with 52. Shortly after the second light, hang a right into the small gravel parking area overlooking the dam.

Clayton RABUN BALD Trail : 4 miles round trip Easy to Moderate hike, though last half mile is rather steep and some find this part strenuous.

Directions: from Clayton US 441 North to 1 mile past Dillard, right onto GA 246 toward Highlands for 7 miles, right onto FS7, go 2.1 miles take the right fore (FS7 goes left) go 1.3 miles, take a left fork on dirt road tward Beegum Ga, go 1.6 miles to parking area.

Directions: Drive from Helen, Georgia, through Unicoi State Park, and then you’ll soon arrive at the Anna Ruby Falls Visitors Center.

Lakemont ANGEL FALLS Trail: This is a heavily wooded trail that leads you to two different waterfalls. One is 1/2 mile in and the other is 1 mile from the starting point. There is a creek that runs along side the trail for a while. I would describe it as a moderate hike with some steep inclines.

Directions: From Highway 441, turn onto Lake Rabun Road and then travel several miles down the winding road around the lake.

The entrance to the campground will be on the right hand side. Go into the campground and follow the road around until you see the trailhead sign.

Cornelia LAKE RUSSEL LOOP Trail: This is a great loop around Lake Russell with some great views of the lake. There’s a nice campground here as well. The 2 dam crossings are very cool.

Directions: From Cornelia, head North/ Northeast on Dick’s Hill Pkwy (Hwy 13) and hang a right on Lake RussellRoad across from the Lake Russell Convenience store. go 2.5 miles, and hang a left at the sign. go left at the fork and park at the trailhead near the old dam. Then just follow the signs and head around the lake.
