In 1837 General Winfield Scott was commissioned to gather all the Native Americans throughout the region and detain them in improvised stockades before taking them to the Oklahoma Territory.

During this time, a Captain Hembree was sent to this section of what was to become Cherokee County (in 1839) and he constructed a stockade about a mile south west of the present town of Hayesville. Native Americans were held there until they had all been captured and the infamous “Trail of Tears” began.

Mr. George Hayes, who lived in the general area of Tomotla, was running for representative for Cherokee County in the Fall election of 1860.

When he brought his campaign to the southeastern end of the county, he found that his constituents here wanted separation from Cherokee County and a county seat of government of their own. By promising them that he would introduce legislation to form a new county, he captured most of the votes in this area. In February of 1861 such legislation was introduced and passed by the North Carolina General Assembly.

The new County seat was named Hayesville in recognition of Mr. George Hayes, for his help in its creation. The new county was named Clay to honor the great Kentucky Statesman Henry Clay. Probably

Getting Started

Settling in to a new place can be a challenge. To help make an easier transition, we have created this section of helpful information for you.

• Driver’s License: You have 60 days to apply for a NC driver’s license --- ncdot.gov.dmv or Call 919-715-7000 for appt.

• Vehicle Tags: You have 30 days to apply for a tag.

To obtain a tag, you need your title, registration or bill of sale and proof of insurance. New car owners have 7 days to apply. The Tag Office is located on Hwy 64, across from Jacky Jones Ford, and can be reached at 828-389-8133.

• Animals: North Carolina requires all cats and dogs to have annual rabies shots. Animal Control can be reached at 828-389-8052 x108

No, we aren’t in the business of weight loss. The name Chunky Gal comes from the mountain range that we sit right at the base of, Chunky Gal Mountain. The mountains were named after an old Cherokee Indian story of a chief’s daughter that did not want to be married off to who her father had selected and ran away into the mountains. LEATHERWOOD FALLS, a popular picnic spot located in the Fires Creek Recreational Area, boasts a 25 foot waterfall and has a 0.7 mile loop trail along the creek. For more advanced hikers, Fires Creek also offers the 26 mile Rim Trail that follows the basin around the Wildlife Area with colorful wildflowers and a chance to see many species of protected wildlife. Fires Creek is a nature lover’s paradise.
