welcome to the
theater CONGRATULATIONS! You’ll be working with your creative team and fellow cast members to put on a musical. Before you begin rehearsals, there are some important things you should know.
This book is your script. Whether putting on a school production or rehearsing a professional show, every actor, director, and stage manager works from a script. Your script contains some additional information like this introduction and a glossary. You can look up any bold words in the glossary at the back of this book. Be sure to take good care of your script, and use a pencil when taking notes in it, since what you’ll be doing onstage can change during rehearsals. One of the first things you’ll need to learn is what to call the various areas of the stage. Since most stages used to be raked, or tilted down toward the house, where the audience sits, we still use the term downstage to refer to the area closest to the audience and upstage to refer to the area farthest from the audience. Stage left and stage right are from the actor’s perspective when facing the audience. The diagram above shows how to use these terms to label nine different parts of the stage.

rehearsals
Y
ou will be performing a musical, a type of play that tells a story through songs, dances, and dialogue. Because there are so many parts of a musical, most shows have more than one author. The composer writes the music and usually works with a lyricist, who writes the lyrics, or words, to the songs. The book writer writes the dialogue (spoken words, or lines ) and the stage directions , which tell the actors what to do onstage and what music cues to listen for. Your director will plan rehearsals so that the cast is ready to give its best performance on opening night! Remember to warm up before each rehearsal so that your mind, body, and voice are ready to go. Every rehearsal process is a little bit different, but here is an idea of what you can expect as you begin to work on your show.
music:
choreography:
After you’ve got the music down, you’ll begin working on the choreography – or dance – in the show. Your choreographer will create the dances and teach them to the cast. The music and the choreography help tell the story.
blocking & scene work:
Your director will block the show by telling the cast where to stand and how to move around the stage. You’ll use your theater terms (downstage left, upstage right, etc.) a lot during this portion of the rehearsal process. You will also practice speaking your lines and work on memorizing them. Rehearsing your part from memory is called being off-book. Your director will help you understand the important action in each scene so you can make the best choices for your character’s objective, or what your character wants.
ONCE UPON A ONE MORE TIME JR.
what to expect during
Since you’re performing a musical, it is important to learn the music early on in the rehearsal process. Your music director will teach the cast all the songs in the show and tell you what to practice at home.

For example, if your line reads, “I’m here to rescue you.” and your director wants you to stress the words “rescue you,” underline them in your script.

You may use these abbreviations to modify other instructions (e.g., you could write “R hand up” to remind yourself to raise your right hand). she’s so lonely, but the Narrator dismisses her concerns. Later, at Snow White’s cottage, the Princess and the Pea, Snow White, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and the LITTLE MERMAID commiserate over how their “happy ever afters” are not so happy (Lucky). Snow White, summoned by the Narrator, must dash away to perform the Huntsman scene. On her walk back home, Cinderella wishes for more, and the original FAIRY GODMOTHER (O.F.G.) appears! She’s brought

The Girl falls asleep, and the audience follows the Narrator into the storytellers’ backstage area. STEPMOTHER and STEPSISTERS (BELINDA and BETANY) practice flirting, but PRINCE CHARMING only has eyes for Cinderella. She wants him to come to Scroll Club, but he happily informs her that he doesn’t read, and his only job is to be charming. Cinderella wonders aloud to the Narrator whether they’re in “happy ever after,” especially since

Kid). Stepmother snatches the book from Cinderella. Cinderella goes to Snow White’s cottage, even though her story is being read, to tell her about Fairy Godmother and ask for her help getting the book back. Through the intercom, the Narrator asks Snow White if she’s seen Cinderella and threatens to replace Cinderella with someone else. Snow White lies to the Narrator – which she has never done before – and the two go to Cinderella’s castle to get the book back from her Stepmother. Prince Charming makes his grand entrance to the ball, where the COURT awaits (Circus). Cinderella and Snow White enter in disguise. Cinderella’s Stepmother refuses to return the book unless Cinderella rejects Prince Charming. Stepmother wants the Prince to choose one of her daughters and for Cinderella to convince the Narrator to use the Great Quill to change the story.

reject the Prince, as Stepmother wants, but she can’t resist him (Sometimes). Suddenly, Snow White recognizes him – Prince Charming is also her prince, Faithful (Oops!… I Did It Again). HANSEL, GRETEL, and the Princesses gather in Snow White’s cottage, where Cinderella confesses that her new book has caused her to question their world. Narrator finds them and threatens to send Cinderella to Story’s End if she doesn’t perform her story exactly as written. Cinderella heads back to her story but is interrupted by Fairy Godmother. O.F.G. explains that Cinderella needs to change her happily ever after herself. Inspired Once Upon A One More Time JR.
At the tower, Prince Charming appears. The Princesses realize he’s not only Cinderella’s and Snow White’s prince… he’s everyone’s prince (Oops… Again). The Princesses confront Prince Charming and drop him down a wishing well (Womanizer – Parts 1 and 2). Cinderella wishes that she had enough books for all the Princesses, and O.F.G. appears to grant her wish! She passes out books and explains a thing or two to the Princesses about what girls can do (I Wanna Go). As the Princesses go on strike, the Girl reading the story holds up a blank book… and steps through a magical door into the fairy-tale world. The Narrator, Prince Charming, and Stepfamily are tired of Cinderella’s antics (Crazy). Though Stepmother wants the Narrator to promote one of her daughters to the princess position, Narrator insists that Prince Charming must win back Cinderella. The Princesses, GOLDILOCKS, and LITTLE RED pause on their march to the Narrator’s castle to make their list of demands. They decide to camp for the night, and Cinderella assures everyone that she has a plan – which, she
confesses to Snow White, she doesn’t. Cinderella leaves to search for O.F.G. when Prince Charming finds her. Narrator and Stepmother watch as he tries to win her back (Cinderella). In a moment of clarity, Prince Charming realizes that she’s right and lets her go. Meanwhile, after Stepmother’s hints, the Narrator finally considers the Stepsisters to take over Cinderella’s role. Stepmother reminds Narrator of his own power, and he banishes the Princesses (Toxic). When Betany and Belinda try to stand up to him, he banishes them too. Cinderella returns, and Narrator demands she meet Prince Charming at the palace at midnight, or he’ll banish her, too (Everytime). Cinderella encounters Girl, the reader, who came into the book to look for her godmother, who turns out to be O.F.G.! Girl and O.F.G. go with Cinderella to the castle, where the Narrator tries to force Cinderella to marry Prince Charming. Instead, Cinderella breaks a glass slipper, awakening the Princesses at Story’s End and banishing the Narrator (Stronger – Part 1). The Girl, using O.F.G.’s wand, wishes for everyone to write their own happily ever after.

(#3 – SNORE begins.) NARRATOR And... she’s asleep! Child’s asleep! Well done, everybody. All characters are now released. (Suddenly, it’s like a set being struck. We are now backstage in the world of fairy tales.) Thank you all, and happy ever after.

ALL (the “aloha” of the kingdom) Happy ever after. (#4 – HAPPY EVER AFTER begins.)
SCENE 2: BACKSTAGE (PRINCE CHARMING sweeps through, trailed by STEPSISTERS and STEPMOTHER.) STEPMOTHER There’s Prince Charming, girls! And Cinderella’s nowhere to be found. Belinda, Betany! Showtime. Like we practiced! (instructions) Silly giggle! (They giggle.) Hair flip! (They flip their hair.) GO! (STEPMOTHER pushes them towards PRINCE CHARMING... just as CINDERELLA enters. PRINCE CHARMING blows right on by them, making a beeline for CINDERELLA.) PRINCE CHARMING Hi! How’s my favorite 8 and a half, narrow? CINDERELLA Oh hi! She is... thinking. Ugh. Why?
PRINCE CHARMING
CINDERELLA Well, I was wondering... would you ever want to come to Scroll Club? Scroll Club?
PRINCE CHARMING
CINDERELLA Yeah! The girls and I get together every waxing gibbous moon to talk about the stories in the Great Scroll, and I was thinking if you and I—
12
Once Upon A One More Time JR.
I don’t read.
PRINCE CHARMING
CINDERELLA Really? As prince, don’t you think you should? PRINCE CHARMING Let me tell you how the world works. I’m not paid to think. Neither are you! You’re paid to be pretty, and I’m paid to be charming. CINDERELLA Paid? Wait – do you get paid for this work? PRINCE CHARMING Shh. Maybe. It doesn’t matter. What matters is us. You. Me. Happy ever after. (then) Isn’t that the dream, Cin? (NARRATOR enters.) NARRATOR While we’ve got a break between children... notes. (checking notebook) Charming... none. What can I say? I was charmed. PRINCE CHARMING Bibbidi Bobbidi Boom! NARRATOR Cinderella. Hmm. Is everything all right, dear? Because you were late picking up the slipper. Children want things the same. Every time. CINDERELLA Every time. Got it. Can I ask a question, just like real quick though? Is this definitely happy ever after? (off NARRATOR’s shock) It’s just – I get the glass slippers, which are stunning, if a bit non-breathable, and I win the prince – Charming! – we marry, and it’s happy ever after... So why do I feel so... lonely? Does this make any sense? It does not.
NARRATOR

CINDERELLA Ok. Sorry. It’s obviously me. Thank you for— NARRATOR (exiting) Good talk. Listening.
CINDERELLA
(#5 – SCROLL CLUB begins.) (CINDERELLA, NARRATOR, and PRINCE CHARMING exit.)
SCENE 3: SNOW WHITE’S COTTAGE (PRINCESS AND THE PEA, SLEEPING BEAUTY, RAPUNZEL, and LITTLE MERMAID are seated on miniature chairs with SNOW WHITE.) PRINCESS AND THE PEA Snow, you have no full-sized furniture? At least when Goldilocks hosts, we have options... SNOW WHITE Hey, why is nobody eating my apple crumble? SLEEPING BEAUTY Snow, sweetie, where’d you get the apples? SNOW WHITE Oh, this delightful old woman was selling them door to door— (RAPUNZEL tosses the apple crumble into the trash as CINDERELLA enters.) RAPUNZEL There you are! We should start. I have to braid my hair before my story’s read, and obviously that’s my whole day. SNOW WHITE Little Mermaid, it’s your tale. You wanna kick us off? (LITTLE MERMAID points to her throat.) She can’t speak.
14
RAPUNZEL
Once Upon A One More Time JR.
Oh, right! I forgot!
SNOW WHITE
RAPUNZEL But we’ve read her story a million times. (incredulous) You KNOW her. SNOW WHITE I’m the fairest. I never claimed to be the smartest. (then) Can we talk about the trade Little makes with the Sea Witch? So it’s her voice, and her tongue— For legs. Sounds fair.
SLEEPING BEAUTY SNOW WHITE
SLEEPING BEAUTY Exactly. I mean, who are we without our princes? (Agreement from the PRINCESSES.) CINDERELLA ... but it’s her voice. There’s nothing else you could trade? (LITTLE MERMAID mimes. SLEEPING BEAUTY translates.) SLEEPING BEAUTY (translating) She said, “My voice is all I have.” CINDERELLA Which is exactly why you shouldn’t trade it! SNOW WHITE Ok, what has gotten into you, Cin? CINDERELLA I don’t know! I mean... (#6 – LUCKY begins.)

(The PRINCESSES exit, leaving SNOW WHITE and CINDERELLA.) You seem... off. Here, I made this for you. Maybe keep it, to remind you? (SNOW WHITE hands her a needlepoint.) CINDERELLA (reading) “Happy ever after.” That’s not how you spell “after.” Or “ever.” Or “happy.” SNOW WHITE Huh. I guess neither of us knows what happy ever after’s supposed to look like. (then, chipper) All right, I gotta go get chased through the woods by a terrifying man in pitch blackness! (SNOW WHITE exits, leaving CINDERELLA alone on a forest path.) How will I know if the Narrator’s looking for me? (CINDERELLA turns the intercom back on.) FAIRY GODMOTHER Sweetie, I want YOU to look for you. Cinderella, the stories you’ve been reading and living... they can be deeply problematic towards certain people. They can just give you a warped view of the world. The real world. Out there, beyond Story’s End. CINDERELLA Beyond Story’s End? You’ve escaped Story’s End? FAIRY GODMOTHER I did. With Princess Betty. She and I made our way to a fabulous little kingdom called “Flatbush.” CINDERELLA Wait, you know Princess Betty? FAIRY GODMOTHER I do! I know her quite well. As can you... (O.F.G. opens the book for CINDERELLA.) CINDERELLA (reading the book) “The Problem That Has No Name”... oh, this feels like it was written specifically for me! FAIRY GODMOTHER A lot of women felt that way. CINDERELLA (reiterating) And a woman wrote this. You’re not pulling my slipper. FAIRY GODMOTHER Sweetie... women do write. (STEPMOTHER sees the book and snatches it from CINDERELLA.) STEPMOTHER: What is this?? BELINDA: It's a big piece of toast. BETANY: No, Belinda, it's a book. STEPMOTHER: How do you know what books are?!? CINDERELLA: Oh, please, I think that book might be the key to my happy ever after—

SCENE 5: SNOW WHITE’S COTTAGE (SNOW WHITE waves to an unseen woman, holding a basket of apples.) SNOW WHITE Thanks for the apples, delightful old woman! (CINDERELLA hurries in.) Cin! What are you doing here? Isn’t your story being read?!? CINDERELLA I’ve gone ROGUE! You’ve heard of O.F.G., right? Notorious O.F.G.?!
SNOW WHITE
YES. Snow – I met her!
CINDERELLA
SNOW WHITE WHAT?! How? But she was banished! CINDERELLA I know! I asked for “more,” and poof, SHE SHOWED UP! And she gave me a new book! It is MIND-BLOWING and is 100% going to change the way you look at quite literally EVERYTHING! But my stepmother took it, so we gotta get it back. I need your help, come on! SNOW WHITE Wow, ok! Oh, but not today. I’m meeting my prince. CINDERELLA What? Snow, this is way more important! Than true love?
SNOW WHITE
CINDERELLA True love between you and... The Prince!

SNOW WHITE
Once Upon A One More Time JR.
CINDERELLA Right. But Prince...??? (off SNOW WHITE’s silence) You don’t even know his name! SNOW WHITE Of course I do. It’s... Faithful! CINDERELLA Snow. We’ve read your story in Scroll Club a million times. Your prince is never named. SNOW WHITE Well that’s what I call him, so— NARRATOR (offstage) Snow White? (SNOW WHITE answers the intercom.) ... yes?
SNOW WHITE
NARRATOR (offstage) Do you know where Cinderella is? (SNOW WHITE waves to CINDERELLA: “What do I do?” CINDERELLA shakes her head: “I’m not here!”) SNOW WHITE (into intercom) ... no? No. NARRATOR (offstage) Well if you see her, please tell her she’s due at the palace and that if she misses her entrance, I may have no choice but to replace her. Happy ever after isn’t a birthright; it’s a privilege, and it can be taken away. SNOW WHITE Got it! (hangs up) I can’t believe I just did that! I lied to the Narrator!
Music Theatre International • Broadway Junior® • Actor’s Script
39
CINDERELLA I think he’s been lying to us all these years! Come with me to the palace. My stepmother will be there; we can get the book back! SNOW WHITE I can’t enter your story WHILE it’s being read! We could both get banished! CINDERELLA Narrator says that to keep us in line. He banished O.F.G.!
SNOW WHITE
CINDERELLA Then we’re probably doing something right. Let’s go!
SCENE 6: PRINCE CHARMING’S PALACE NARRATOR (offstage) Ok! From Charming’s entrance, ladies, give me shock and awe! The Prince has ENTERED THE BUILDING! (#12 – CIRCUS begins.)

NARRATOR (entering) Pausing for a child potty break. That’s a potty pause, everybody!
48
Once Upon A One More Time JR.
(CINDERELLA and SNOW WHITE arrive at the other end of the hall in hooded capes. SNOW WHITE is in awe.) SNOW WHITE Are you kidding me right now with this party?!? Check out this palace! Look at that cute pig with an apple in his mouth! Is he friendly?!? CINDERELLA He’s dinner. (scanning the room) Okay, so we gotta find my stepmother. You look that way, I’ll go this way! (SNOW WHITE leaves. CINDERELLA turns and runs into her surprised STEPMOTHER, BELINDA, and BETANY.) STEPMOTHER What are you doing here? You don’t ruin all my hopes and dreams for another ten minutes. CINDERELLA I want that book back. It’s mine. Noted. And no.
STEPMOTHER
(STEPMOTHER hands the volume to BELINDA.) BELINDA (exiting, thrilled) The toast! Mom! STEPMOTHER (watching her go) Should I have educated her? Motherhood is such a series of difficult decisions... (back to CINDERELLA) I’m sure a trade could be arranged. You can have the book back... if you reject the Prince. CINDERELLA I can’t “reject the Prince”! Charming?!? You know we can’t change our stories!
Music Theatre International • Broadway Junior® • Actor’s Script
49
STEPMOTHER Cinderella. Why do you think I do this? If I didn’t think at SOME point the Narrator might be “persuaded” to have the Prince choose either of my perfect daughters? Sweetheart – if the Narrator deigns to make an adjustment, that’s what the Great Quill is for! But he never uses it...
CINDERELLA
STEPMOTHER Sure he does. Sparingly. Remember how dark our tale used to be? My daughters’ eyes used to get pecked out in the finale! CINDERELLA So what, I just tell the Narrator I want— STEPMOTHER “Tell him”? Ha! No. You get him to think the idea is his. Play to his vanity. (She spies the NARRATOR.) Oh, Narrator! I wanted to ask about that idea you had for spotlighting my daughters’ entrance – I’m sorry, how do you not age??! NARRATOR (blushing) None of us age. STEPMOTHER I know, but still. To be so once upon a timeless! “Who’s the fairest?” I think it’s an open question... NARRATOR What was my, um, idea, for their— (The quill begins pulsing.) And we’re back! Ok, let’s go to Cinderella’s first dance with Prince Charming. Action! PRINCE CHARMING Hello! Do you believe in love at first sight? Because I think I may have just been blinded by your beauty... SCENE 7: INSIDE SNOW WHITE’S COTTAGE (The PRINCESSES have all assembled, having heard the news. CINDERELLA and SNOW WHITE enter.)
60
Once Upon A One More Time JR.
SLEEPING BEAUTY What were you thinking, Cin? Bringing Snow into your story?!? Narrator’s going to lose his quill when he finds you. CINDERELLA I was trying to – can you all keep a secret? NARRATOR (offstage) Hansel and Gretel, to the gingerbread house. (HANSEL and GRETEL enter and cross, overjoyed.) HANSEL (German accent) Oh ho, yah! Those poor children.
RAPUNZEL
(CINDERELLA pulls them into a huddle.) CINDERELLA This is beyond hush-hush. I got given a new book... and it’s got me questioning almost everything in our stories. Wait, our stories too?
SNOW WHITE
CINDERELLA Your story especially. Not to pick on you, but I mean, “true love”? True love that starts when a random guy discovers you, unconscious in a clearing, and instead of calling for help, decides to kiss you? SNOW WHITE Huh. I never thought about it that way... (The door opens, and NARRATOR enters, furious.) NARRATOR There you are! Cinderella, Snow White, what has gotten into you?! CINDERELLA You want to know what’s gotten into us? Why didn’t you tell us that Snow and I are sharing a prince?
Music Theatre International • Broadway Junior® • Actor’s Script
61
NARRATOR Stop, stop, stop – what is that tone you’re using? It’s so strident! No. SHRILL. Dulcet tones. Practice, all of you. PRINCESSES (singsong) Sorry... NARRATOR Everybody who doesn’t live here, out! (All exit except for SNOW WHITE. CINDERELLA tries to sneak out with the others.) Not you, Cinderella. (to SNOW WHITE and CINDERELLA) Girls, we have been entrusted with these tales. WE are the guardians. Do you understand how much of a responsibility that is? Yes.
CINDERELLA/SNOW WHITE
NARRATOR I’m very glad to hear that. Because these fairy tales, they teach children how to see the world. What to fear. Whom to love. What happy ever after means. I understand but—
CINDERELLA
NARRATOR No, I don’t think you do. Cinderella, you told me you felt “lonely.” Do you know where you’ll really feel lonely? Story’s End. (then) The next time your story is read, you will perform it exactly as written. Am I clear?!? (CINDERELLA and SNOW WHITE nod.) Good day. And happy ever after. CINDERELLA/SNOW WHITE (not happy) Happy ever after. (He exits. CINDERELLA gathers her things.) I gotta go.
62
CINDERELLA
Once Upon A One More Time JR.
SNOW WHITE What about telling the girls about the book? CINDERELLA Never mind. It’s too dangerous. (#16 – TO THE FOREST begins.) (CINDERELLA crosses into the forest, where she encounters one of her BIRDS in a tree.)
SCENE 8: THE FOREST (CINDERELLA) (speaking to the BIRD) I’m just going to play the role I’ve been written. (after tweets) ... no, of course it’s not the best use of my abilities, but then what abilities do I have? I mean, if you want a lentilfree hearth, I’m your girl, but... I just don’t see the point of dreaming. (#17 – O.F.G. ENTRANCE 2 begins.) (O.F.G. appears, magically.) FAIRY GODMOTHER You DON’T see the point of dreaming? Bibbidi bobbidi BOO on this attitude of yours! Cinderella, your story is going to challenge you. You can’t run from those challenges – you gotta run toward them! But to do that, you might need to give those slippers... (raised eyebrow) a break. CINDERELLA You mean literally? You raised your eyebrow— FAIRY GODMOTHER Here’s the thing, Cinderella. True happy ever after – for a woman – usually involves breaking some glass. (CINDERELLA removes a slipper and tries to break it. Impossible.) CINDERELLA There’s no way. Plus, they’re my slippers! I wouldn’t be “Cinderella” without them. Music Theatre International • Broadway Junior® • Actor’s Script
63
FAIRY GODMOTHER So who would you be? (CINDERELLA is lost.) CINDERELLA I kinda need more help. Look, you’re just gonna have to fix this for me. FAIRY GODMOTHER (pulls out her wand) Fix this for you, of course! CINDERELLA Never gets old, having a fairy godmother! FAIRY GODMOTHER NOW ALACAZOOMLAMI AND MENCHIKAPOOLARU BUT THE THINGAMABOB THAT DOES THE JOB IS— CINDERELLA (loving it!) BIBBIDI BOBBIDI—
(FAIRY GODMOTHER) (pointing wand) Self-reliance.
(FAIRY GODMOTHER) Cinderella, if something’s wrong with your ever after, it’s up to you to right it! CINDERELLA Write it, or right it? How are you spelling— FAIRY GODMOTHER You can’t do one without the other. So right your fairy tale! That is the answer to the problem that has no name... (#18 – O.F.G. EXIT begins.) (POOF! O.F.G. vanishes.) CINDERELLA Self-reliance. Hmm. Wait! I know what to do! (CINDERELLA gestures for her BIRD to fly to her, which it does.) (CINDERELLA) (to the BIRD) Tell the girls to meet me at Rapunzel’s tower!
64
Once Upon A One More Time JR.
(#19 – TO RAPUNZEL’S TOWER begins.) (The BIRD flies away, and CINDERELLA exits.)
SCENE 9: RAPUNZEL’S TOWER (The BIRD leads PRINCESS AND THE PEA, LITTLE MERMAID, SLEEPING BEAUTY, and SNOW WHITE onstage.) PRINCESS AND THE PEA What could the emergency be? (SNOW WHITE spies a wishing well.) SNOW WHITE The emergency is this wishing well! Who has a coin? I wanna make a wish! (The well echoes, “Wish! Wish! Wish!”) Somebody’s down there! (CINDERELLA enters.) CINDERELLA Ok great, you all got my bird— SLEEPING BEAUTY Cin, what’s going on? CINDERELLA I’ll explain when we’re all together – where’s Pun? PRINCESS AND THE PEA I think her story’s being read— SNOW WHITE What are you doing, Cin? You heard what the Narrator said! CINDERELLA I did. But well-behaved princesses rarely make history. (then, re: the tower) We’re going up! (As CINDERELLA scans for a way to get up, a cloaked figure emerges from the end of the braid. It’s PRINCE CHARMING. The PRINCESSES gasp!)

SCENE 10: THE FOREST (CINDERELLA leads the PRINCESSES deeper into the forest so they can be alone.) CINDERELLA OK! There’s so much to get you all caught up on. So you remember how I was telling you about the book I was given? (producing The Feminine Mystique) Let’s quickly read this together. Once we’re on the same page about what’s possible, what I’m about to propose will all make sense! (The PRINCESSES gather around and try to read over CINDERELLA’s shoulder. Chaos.) BELLE

(CINDERELLA) Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey. SLEEPING BEAUTY Cin. How many tales have we read? You’ve got to be ruthlessly specific with wishes. Try again. (The PRINCESSES gather around CINDERELLA as she revises the wish.) CINDERELLA I wish we had more of Princess Betty’s books. (#25 – O.F.G. ENTRANCE 3 begins.) (Poof! O.F.G. appears with books.) FAIRY GODMOTHER Did somebody say I wish? (taking Captain Underpants) Oh no, that was a joke, sweetie. I gotcha! I got all of you! CINDERELLA Oh! Everybody, this is O.F.G.! PRINCESSES

FAIRY GODMOTHER Yes, yes, ok. Listen up! O.F.G.’s gonna take you to school. (#26 – I WANNA GO begins.)

(#28 – CRAZY (PLAYOFF) begins.) (CINDERELLA leads the PRINCESSES off into the forest.) NARRATOR It’s all ruined. Centuries of tradition, lost! Cinderella has destroyed everything! She’ll pay... What’s our plan?
PRINCE CHARMING
NARRATOR You’re our plan! We need you to save the day and get back Cinderella. STEPMOTHER Oh, do we really need to—
92
Once Upon A One More Time JR.
PRINCE CHARMING (cutting her off) On it... how? STEPMOTHER (pushing daughters forward) He’s right. It’s useless. We’ll have to find a replacement girl. Hmm, WHO could we— NARRATOR No, we stick with Plan A. A as in “AS IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN.” We’re not changing things. PRINCE CHARMING Here for that. In Plan A, I save the day by giving Cin her slipper back. But she has them both already. What else could I give her? BETANY
An ultimatum?!? The old heave-ho!
STEPMOTHER
BELINDA Your full attention. Just listen to her. Show her that you care what SHE has to say. (Everyone stares. Huh.) NARRATOR Do... what she said. Go. PRINCE CHARMING At your wish! And with that, I am off to bring back Cinderella’s heart... (#29 – THE ROAD TO FLATBUSH begins.)
Music Theatre International • Broadway Junior® • Actor’s Script
93
SCENE 11: THE ROAD TO FLATBUSH (The PRINCESSES are marching triumphantly through the forest.) CINDERELLA Ok! We’re clearly not going to make it to the Narrator’s castle tonight. Let’s stop here! And— Let’s make a list of demands for the Narrator so he can use the Great Quill to rewrite our stories! (off their cheers) So what do we want?!? (off BELLE’s hand raise) Yes! Belle! BELLE I wouldn’t say no to a set of non-verbal china. (GOLDILOCKS raises her hand.) Ok... Goldilocks?
CINDERELLA
GOLDILOCKS More... porridge? Too big an ask? Too small? Wanna get it just right, you know me. CINDERELLA No, we have to think BIGGER. Imagine ANYTHING is possible. What would you change, in your stories? RAPUNZEL If anything is possible... I’d like to become a knight! (The PRINCESSES cheer!) I think I’d be a librarian!
BELLE
(The PRINCESSES cheer!) An allergist!
PRINCESS AND THE PEA
(The PRINCESSES cheer!) Taxidermist!
LITTLE RED
(The PRINCESSES cheer!)
94
Once Upon A One More Time JR.
SNOW WHITE I’m going to become a BRAIN SURGEON! (Everyone gives SNOW WHITE a sharp look. The following dialogue overlaps:) Not sure about that.
LITTLE RED
PRINCESS AND THE PEA Sounds like a terrible idea. RAPUNZEL I mean, what could go wrong? PRINCESS AND THE PEA But wait – what if the Narrator won’t meet with us? CINDERELLA Then we will... storm the castle! How will we get in?
RAPUNZEL
(CINDERELLA isn’t sure.) CINDERELLA People. I have a plan. Let’s make camp, and we’ll go over it first thing in the morning! (The PRINCESSES start making camp. SNOW WHITE moves to CINDERELLA, relieved.) SNOW WHITE Thank goodness. I’ve been telling everybody, “Do not worry, Cin has a—” CINDERELLA I do not have a plan. We need O.F.G. I thought she’d show up by now? So I’m gonna go find her. SNOW WHITE By yourself? In the forest? Have you read a fairy tale?!? CINDERELLA If I can’t find her, I’ll be back by midnight. That’s kinda my thing. You’re in charge. (#30 – THE ROAD TO STORY’S END begins.) (With that, CINDERELLA sets off.) Music Theatre International • Broadway Junior® • Actor’s Script
95
SCENE 12: ROAD TO STORY’S END (NARRATOR and STEPFAMILY are secretly watching.) (CINDERELLA) (calling out) O.F.G.? O.F.G.?! O.F.— PRINCE CHARMING Hello! You’re welcome, I’m here to rescue you. CINDERELLA
From what?
PRINCE CHARMING From this weird thing you’re doing. CINDERELLA
I have to go now.
(CINDERELLA turns to leave, losing a slipper.) PRINCE CHARMING Why is everything suddenly so complicated? (picking up the slipper) Cin, stop, please?!?

SCENE 13: THE NARRATOR AND STEPFAMILY ARE IN THE THRONE ROOM STEPMOTHER Welp, we tried! Guess it’s time to consider other girls— (She motions to her daughters.) NARRATOR You’re right. It doesn’t have to be Cinderella. Any of those other girls would do, in a pinch. STEPMOTHER No, I meant girls who haven’t turned their backs on everything you’ve done for them. But who?
NARRATOR
STEPMOTHER But who! I wonder if there are ANY other girls we aren’t thinking of. The answer could be right under our noses. Sisters? Are there sisters— NARRATOR Wait! I’ve solved it! Your daughters! ... who?
STEPMOTHER
NARRATOR You have a pair of daughters.

STEPMOTHER Genius. Lemme see if I can find them— (pretends to “find” them) Oh look, they’re right here. NARRATOR Of course, the other girls on the march will turn around eventually, and when they do— STEPMOTHER Don’t let them. Those girls are nothing but trouble. Banish them. Banish them? ALL of them.

CINDERELLA Wait, hold up. Are you a READER?!? How did you get here? GIRL I was looking for my godmother. This is her favorite book, and... I think I ruined it. It still says “Once Upon a Time” and “Happy Ever After,” but inside it’s... empty. CINDERELLA Oh no, you didn’t ruin it. I did. I ruined everything... All my friends, the other princesses, they... (She can’t bring herself to tell the GIRL what’s happened. CINDERELLA takes the book from her and reads the back cover.) “... Happy Ever After.” That was the idea... Oh what was I thinking?!? I questioned my, well... Music Theatre International • Broadway Junior® • Actor’s Script

(CINDERELLA) (re: the cover) this, and O.F.G. made me think I could “right” my fairy tale, which was so not true... but I got all the princesses to go on strike for things like equal pay, and, what else, oh! We found out our prince was cheating on... (realizing the girl’s age) tests... and I thought we could improve our lives, but look where it’s gotten us. But I love your story.
GIRL
CINDERELLA I did too. The dress, the ball, the shoes, but— GIRL No, not that story, your NEW story. CINDERELLA ... really? You love it? But it’s not... How did you even recognize me? GIRL
You’re Cinderella.
CINDERELLA Am I? Look at me. I don’t even have my slippers. GIRL Why can’t you get new slippers? I have to get new shoes all the time. (then) My godmother says if you don’t change... you can’t grow. (CINDERELLA considers this wisdom.) CINDERELLA Sounds like you have a very wise godmother. FAIRY GODMOTHER (entering) She has her moments. CINDERELLA O.F.G.! Where’ve you been?

FAIRY GODMOTHER We’re coming with you. CINDERELLA No way. She’s just a child! (to the GIRL) Don’t you want to go home? GIRL And miss this?!? I want to know how the story ends!
