SYNOPSIS

Vladimir and Estragon, two old friends, wait endlessly near a lone tree on a desolate stretch of land, hoping the mysterious Godot will arrive and give their lives some sense of direction. As they pass the time, their conversations drift from the mundane to the philosophical, revealing both the humour and the hardship of their shared vigil. Their waiting is interrupted by two peculiar travellers – Pozzo and Lucky – whose strange dynamic adds to the play’s questions about purpose, control and companionship. As day turns to night and certainty slips further away, the two friends continue to wait, unsure of what tomorrow may bring.

Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) was an Irish writer, dramatist and key figure of 20th-century modernism and the Theatre of the Absurd. Born in Foxrock, a suburb of Dublin, he attended Portora Royal School before studying French and Italian at Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 1927. After a brief period teaching, Beckett moved to Paris, where he met James Joyce and assisted him with research for Finnegans Wake. His early publications included the short story “Assumption” (1929), the poem “Whoroscope” (1930) and the scholarly study “Proust” (1931).

Throughout the 1930s, Beckett travelled, wrote and published More Pricks Than Kicks (1933) and Echo’s Bones and Other Precipitates (1935), while completing the novel Dream of Fair to Middling Women, published posthumously. In 1938, he survived a stabbing attack in Paris, deepening his relationship with Suzanne DéchevauxDumesnil, whom he later married.

During World War II, Beckett joined the French Resistance. After his group was compromised, he and Suzanne fled to southern France, where he worked as a farm labourer while writing the novel Watt. For his wartime service, he received the Croix de Guerre. After the war, he worked with the Irish Red Cross before returning to writing full time.

In the early 1950s, Beckett produced his acclaimed trilogy – Molloy, Malone Dies and The Unnameable – and wrote the play that would define his career: Waiting for Godot, first performed in Paris in 1953. He continued to write influential stage works, including Endgame (1958), Krapp’s Last Tape (1960) and Happy Days (1961). Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969, Beckett maintained a private life and did not attend the ceremony.

He continued to write until his final play, Catastrophe (1983) and died in Paris on December 22, 1989.

There are two absolute certainties in life. We are born. We will die. It is what we do in between – the waiting – that matters.

Humans have tried throughout history to find out what it is we are doing here. We have created systems to keep us organized, jobs to keep us working, and religions to try to explain the unexplainable. Still, the question remains: “What are we doing here?”

Waiting for Godot does not answer this question. Spoiler alert.

When Godot first premièred in 1953 in Paris, audiences felt deceived. They were expecting a traditional theatre experience – one that had a beginning, middle and end. A plot. A Villain. A Hero. A resolution. Instead, what they got was a play that is nowhere and everywhere. A play that ends the way it begins. The passage of time does not bring a resolution. It is described as a Tragicomedy. Whereas a Comedy relies on the audience feeling superior to the characters, and Tragedy relies on the audience knowing something the characters will never see coming. In Godot, there is no dramatic irony. No one is superior to anyone, and we, the audience, don’t know what is next. We cannot watch from a place of knowing; we have to watch without having an idea of what is coming, and what remains for us is uncertainty.

Yes, but who is Godot?

Beckett states when asked this question: “If I knew, I would have said so in the play.”

I have to admit, when I was talking about starting work on this play, this is the question most people ask. My answer: I don’t know.

As we have been rehearsing, the answer becomes clear: the play is not about who Godot is, but about the fact that we are all waiting. Waiting forces us to confront the passage of time. It’s easier to ignore time

passing when you are busy doing, thinking, working, playing or praying. We have created habits to avoid facing the suffering of being human. The suffering of not knowing who we are.

But why are we waiting?

Maybe we are waiting for something to make things better, or to tell us what we are meant to be doing here. Or perhaps something to tell us what it is all for and who we are. And that it matters.

We live through the waiting, staying in the present and showing up for each moment as best we can. We grasp onto memories and cling to them, thinking it gives us purpose. What happens when the memories are no longer there? Do we disappear? We want to know that we were here, know that someone saw us. Know that It mattered. Instead of trying to figure out the play and who it is we are all waiting for and why, let yourself be carried forward and excited by the attraction of the journey of life itself. Allow the play to be and take from it what you can.

The Stratford Festival acknowledges the members of The Friends of the Festival for their continued contributions. This dedicated group of volunteers provides thousands of hours of support annually. They can be found everywhere –welcoming patrons to the theatre, answering questions, working on special projects, assisting at Meighen Forum events and so much more! We are so grateful for all they contribute to making each season possible.

FOR ASSISTANCE AND ACCESSIBILITY

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property rights associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to a mobile device for accessibility reasons, please see the House Manager before the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium.

*Complimentary beverages served within the members’ lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGES

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who contribute generously with financial gifts over and above their ticket purchase. Please consult stratfordfestival.ca/Membership

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim, or if we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take the health and safety of our patrons seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Festival staff member.
