A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO

THIS ROUGH MAGIC The title above comes from a line in The Tempest, spoken by the sorcerer Prospero as he takes leave of his “so potent art” and embarks on a new phase of life. Theatre itself is a magical art, paradoxically using illusion to tell us truth. Its magic is “rough,” not perfect: while it can lead us to a better understanding, it cannot dictate where we go from there. Yet this need to explore our existence through the mimicry of performance seems hardwired into us, an essential part of being human. For my last season as Artistic Director, I have chosen to explore aspects of this strangely potent art we call the theatre. From the amateur theatricals of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the double lives led by Jack and Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, role-playing is a recurring motif of the season. Iago, in Othello, masks his villainy in the guise of a concerned friend, while Willy Loman, in Death of a Salesman, turns illusion inward, in a desperate effort to convince himself that all is well in his world. The characters in Guys and Dolls – who include a nightclub performer – are larger-than-life caricatures, yet we feel as if we know them. At the same time, Something Rotten!, revived by popular demand, puts Shakespeare himself on stage as it spins its hilariously fanciful yarn

about the creation of the very genre to which it belongs. Dramatic illusion delivers a surprising narrative twist in The King James Bible Play, while Waiting for Godot questions both our place in the universe and our expectations of drama itself. Saturday, Sunday, Monday uses eccentric characters worthy of commedia dell’arte to raise a serious question: how can we rediscover the magic within each of us? Meanwhile, The Tao of the World reimagines a classic Restoration comedy for a modern-day world of wealth and privilege – and shows that we all have roles to play in making society work. Finally, while some adults may look askance at “playacting,” no children do, for it is how they learn to navigate the world. Our explorations begin in childhood, and so it is fitting that our play for young people, The Hobbit, itself takes the form of a quest toward maturity. I hope you will join us on our own quest this season: a quest for laughter, tears, excitement and inspiration, as we pay affectionate homage to the power of theatre in all our lives.

SYNOPSIS

Exiled from Milan by his treacherous brother, Antonio, the former Duke Prospero has lived on a remote island for 12 years with his daughter, Miranda. There, through his study of magic, he commands the spirit Ariel and rules over the island’s otherworldly inhabitants, including the creature Caliban. When the ship carrying Antonio, Alonso, the King of Naples, and Alonso’s son Ferdinand passes nearby, Prospero conjures a powerful storm to bring them ashore. As the castaways are separated and led through strange trials, Prospero sets in motion a plan for justice, reconciliation and renewal – while Miranda and Ferdinand’s unexpected encounter opens the possibility of a brighter future.

by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor. By 1592, Shakespeare had written several plays, including Henry VI, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Titus Andronicus, establishing himself as a well-known London writer and actor. During a plague outbreak in 1593, Shakespeare turned his attention to his long narrative poems, including “Venus and Adonis,” and began writing Shakespeare’s Sonnets, a series of 154 complex poems. By 1595, Shakespeare was back in the theatre, writing and acting for the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. In 1597, he purchased Stratford’s New Place and in 1599 became a shareholder in London’s newly built Globe Theatre. James I awarded Shakespeare’s company a royal patent, becoming known as the King’s Men, in 1603. Shakespeare began to spend most of his time in Stratford from around 1609 until his death on April 23, 1616.

The Art of Compassion A terrifying storm on the Mediterranean destroys a royal yacht. World leaders are presumed drowned. But in fact those leaders – who have overthrown a foreign government and, as they believe, sent a duke and his three-yearold daughter to their deaths – have survived, washed up on a mysterious island controlled by a magician. What they don’t yet know is that this magician is that same Duke Prospero whom they deposed but failed to kill and who is now intent on revenge. Will these murderous usurpers get the harsh justice they deserve? Flawed, angry and damaged, Prospero is consumed by an intense desire both to avenge and to control. He uses the magic he calls his “art” to command not only the people around him but even the very elements of nature. We soon learn that the storm itself was a fiction, staged as a play would be. Given such evidence of Prospero’s power, Shakespeare’s first audience for The Tempest would have been anticipating a revenge tragedy, in which all the villains are gruesomely and satisfyingly killed at the end. They must have been surprised to find it instead turning into a comedy. Written around 1610, during the rise of corporations, stock markets and European colonization, The Tempest has much to say about our history before and since, particularly about our need to control and exploit. From biblical times it was thought that mankind had been put on earth to subjugate it and reap its benefits. Human curiosity and inventiveness were seen as inherently good, yielding largely positive results. Just as God created nature, humanity created art, science and governance. Unlike God, however, we are often driven by bad motives. We make mistakes. As with atomic energy and artificial intelligence, we tend to create monsters. We come to regret or even loathe our creations, for in them we see unflattering images of ourselves. The Tempest is full of examples of human creation, such as art, education and government – and is skeptical of their improving effects. As Caliban says “You taught me language, and my profit on’t is, I know how to curse.” Such questioning of humanity’s efforts, though, was rare in Shakespeare’s time. Until the modern era, art often bolstered governmental and religious authority. At least overtly.

The early 19th century, the Romantic period in which this production is set, saw the beginnings of a change. In the art of that era, humanity – so monumentally important in our own minds – was rightsized: often set beside the power and scale of mountains and tempests at sea. Close to the edge of a mountain drop, we feel ourselves so small and fragile, yet thrillingly alive. We may not be much compared to a mountain, but we are something. Perhaps something beautiful, if we would allow it. Questioning the primacy of humanity enabled a very young Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein, a Caliban story in which the creator proves more of a monster than the disfigured creature he has made. In the etchings and paintings of Francisco Goya, war was no longer glorious but a horrific nightmare. In Beethoven’s Fidelio, the political prisons are finally opened and freedom reigns. A thirst for liberty, to control one’s own life, is shared by many of the characters in The Tempest. Yet Prospero finds the possibility of freedom not through his overwhelming power to control others but by taking the risk of releasing that control through discovering compassion. The theatre itself is a place of control. In staging a play, every element is carefully managed to make an audience’s feelings be stirred by a fiction. As an actor, a playwright and a shareholder in his theatre, Shakespeare was in command, like Prospero on his island – or indeed like other characters in the canon who manipulate those around them, constructing scenarios just as a playwright would. Perhaps in this, his last solely authored play, Shakespeare deliberately drew a parallel between himself and his creation. Giving up his art, Prospero declares that he will seek freedom back home, “where every third thought shall be my grave.” Shakespeare knew that to work in the dramatic arts, with their power to arouse compassion, is to try to better understand life, to learn how to live. Some call the theatre a rehearsal for life. And at some point, perhaps, we may feel that it’s time to stop rehearsing and to begin living.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property rights associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to a mobile device for accessibility reasons, please see the House Manager before the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium. *Complimentary beverages served within the members lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGES

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who contribute generously with financial gifts over and above their ticket purchases. Please consult stratfordfestival.ca/Membership.

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim, or if we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take the health and safety of our patrons seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Festival staff member.
