A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO
THIS ROUGH MAGIC
The title above comes from a line in The Tempest, spoken by the sorcerer Prospero as he takes leave of his “so potent art” and embarks on a new phase of life.
Theatre itself is a magical art, paradoxically using illusion to tell us truth. Its magic is “rough,” not perfect: while it can lead us to a better understanding, it cannot dictate where we go from there. Yet this need to explore our existence through the mimicry of performance seems hardwired into us, an essential part of being human.
For my last season as Artistic Director, I have chosen to explore aspects of this strangely potent art we call the theatre.
From the amateur theatricals of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the double lives led by Jack and Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, role-playing is a recurring motif of the season. Iago, in Othello, masks his villainy in the guise of a concerned friend, while Willy Loman, in Death of a Salesman, turns illusion inward, in a desperate effort to convince himself that all is well in his world.
The characters in Guys and Dolls – who include a nightclub performer – are larger-than-life caricatures, yet we feel as if we know them. At the same time, Something Rotten!, revived by popular demand, puts Shakespeare himself on stage as it spins its hilariously fanciful yarn
about the creation of the very genre to which it belongs.
Dramatic illusion delivers a surprising narrative twist in The King James Bible Play, while Waiting for Godot questions both our place in the universe and our expectations of drama itself.
Saturday, Sunday, Monday uses eccentric characters worthy of commedia dell’arte to raise a serious question: how can we rediscover the magic within each of us? Meanwhile, The Tao of the World reimagines a classic Restoration comedy for a modern-day world of wealth and privilege – and shows that we all have roles to play in making society work.
Finally, while some adults may look askance at “playacting,” no children do, for it is how they learn to navigate the world. Our explorations begin in childhood, and so it is fitting that our play for young people, The Hobbit, itself takes the form of a quest toward maturity.
I hope you will join us on our own quest this season: a quest for laughter, tears, excitement and inspiration, as we pay affectionate homage to the power of theatre in all our lives.

SYNOPSIS
Arabella Flynn, a self-absorbed Singaporean socialite, finds her world upended when her former lover Edward Lim announces his plans to marry her younger cousin, Millicent Tan, a sweet but sheltered teacher bound by eccentric family inheritance clauses. Determined to intervene, Arabella’s efforts to “help” (or sabotage) the couple draw in Lady Helena, her imperious mother who rules the family with icy precision, and Devan, Arabella’s lifelong confidant, whose loyalty frays under her increasingly reckless manipulations. Meanwhile, the underappreciated staff quietly witness every desire, betrayal and shifting power play. As ambition, vanity and longing collide, Arabella’s desperate attempts to maintain control ignite a chain reaction that unravels loyalty, love and identity –plunging everyone into sharply comic, ever-escalating chaos.

by JOVANNI SY
Jovanni fell in love with theatre here in Stratford in 1984. He had already been a couple of times before on school trips: he saw Douglas Campbell’s celebrated King Lear and the infamous Julius Caesar, where a prop sword accidentally stabbed Jack Medley. (Et tu, Brute, indeed!)
But his enjoyment of those productions was thwarted by the high school Code of Coolness, where teenage boys were obliged to roll their eyes at iambic pentameter and men in hosiery. But there were no such constraints that summer evening when Jovanni watched The Gondoliers directed by the legendary Brian Macdonald. That show ignited a lifelong love of theatre.
Still, it took another eight years before Jovanni realized that he, too, could be one of those people making magic on stage. And so began a long journey that eventually brought him back to Stratford.
Forty years after that transformative experience of watching The Gondoliers, Jovanni made his own Stratford debut as the director and co-author (with Leanna Brodie) of Salesman in China. That production was the most satisfying experience of Jovanni’s career, but not for the reason one might imagine. Yes, it was widely praised and full of historic firsts for the Festival.
But what ultimately made Salesman in China so gratifying for Jovanni was that it validated a core belief: that it is possible to create theatre that resonates with audiences from completely different cultural backgrounds. Salesman in China appealed to those who spoke Chinese and those who didn’t; to those who were well-versed in Chinese history and those who weren’t. It was magical to see diverse patrons gasping and crying at the same moments.
Now with The Tao of the World, Jovanni tests this proposition once more. Part restoration comedy, part Asian rom-com, The Tao of the World seeks to find a universal language rooted in laughter. It also pays tribute to those everyday heroes who are so easily overlooked. And maybe, just maybe, it will make some young audience member fall in love with theatre for the first time.
TOWARD A KINDER SpRING
In spring 2021, I was asked to “direct something funny. It was such a hard winter.”
I had enrolled in the MFA directing program at the University of Calgary as the campus was still in COVID lockdown. The first vaccinations had taken place in December 2020 and, as conditions seemed to improve, there were equal measures of hope and anxiety.
It was time for me to choose a thesis play to direct, and our department chair made a personal appeal to select a comedy that might lighten our spirits. I recalled enjoying a production of The Way of the World when I was in high school in the 1980s. Since I had never tackled Restoration comedy before, that was the script I chose.
Little did I know that I would end up with a brand new play.
William Congreve’s The Way of the World is a brilliant comedy that deservedly endures three centuries after it premièred. I soon discovered, however, that it was not a piece that I was capable of directing at that particular time. And the reason had everything to do with the pandemic.
The Restoration period refers to the decades after the ascension of Charles II to the British throne, following the defeat of Cromwell’s Commonwealth.

The many hilarious comedies written during that period are typically about lascivious noblemen and noblewomen who, after years of being exiled to palatial estates in France and elsewhere, indulged themselves upon their return to their own palatial estates in England. Their preferred mode of indulgence seemed to be bedding other people’s spouses.
The term “Restoration” comes with its own specific point of view. Hundreds of thousands of people died during the English Civil War; where was their restoration? As funny as Restoration comedies still are, they tend to: (a) be centred on the lives (and merry transgressions) of the upper class; (b) depict the nobility using and abusing their servants in pursuit of their sybaritic desires.
To understand why I felt so ambivalent about the play I had chosen, think back to the summer of 2020. Remember banging on pots to thank front-line workers? And how we avowed that the brave souls stocking our grocery shelves deserved better than subsistence wages? We saw what was broken and swore to mend it. This plague was our opportunity to fashion a better society.
Just one year later, when I considered directing The Way of the World, I could see that our heartfelt vows were already eroding as the vaccine was restoring some semblance of normalcy.
And so, instead of directing Congreve’s masterpiece, I wrote and directed something loosely inspired by it. The Tao of the World is my homage to Restoration comedy. It celebrates the joy of being alive and the absurdities of falling in love. At the same time, it questions what restoration means. Is it more than the resumption of the status quo?
Above all, I sincerely hope it makes you laugh. We’ve all had a hard winter.

INSPIRING EXCELLENCE CAMPAIGN
Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino has shaped not only productions, but also generations of artists and audiences, as well as the Festival itself.
To celebrate Antoni’s legacy and help secure the Festival’s future, we invite you to support the Inspiring Excellence Campaign: a campaign dedicated to advancing artist training, supporting bold new works and enhancing the audience experience, while upholding the highest artistic standards that define the Stratford Festival.
Your donation – in any amount – honours the past, strengthens the present and ensures a vibrant future for the Festival we all cherish.
Contributions of $100 or more will receive recognition on our website as part of a tribute to Antoni’s extraordinary tenure.
Contributions of $10,000 or more will receive an engraved paving stone in the Festival Theatre gardens.
For more information or to make a gift to the Inspiring Excellence Campaign, please visit stratfordfestival.ca/IE.
For gifts of $10,000+, please email membership@stratfordfestival.ca.

The Stratford Festival acknowledges the members of The Friends of the Festival for their continued contributions. This dedicated group of volunteers provides thousands of hours of support annually. They can be found everywhere –welcoming patrons to the theatre, answering questions, working on special projects, assisting at Meighen Forum events and so much more! We are so grateful for all they contribute to making each season possible.
FOR ASSISTANCE AND ACCESSIBILITY
We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.
CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES
For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property rights associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to a mobile device for accessibility reasons, please see the House Manager before the performance.
