A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO

THIS ROUGH MAGIC

The title above comes from a line in The Tempest, spoken by the sorcerer Prospero as he takes leave of his “so potent art” and embarks on a new phase of life.

Theatre itself is a magical art, paradoxically using illusion to tell us truth. Its magic is “rough,” not perfect: while it can lead us to a better understanding, it cannot dictate where we go from there. Yet this need to explore our existence through the mimicry of performance seems hardwired into us, an essential part of being human.

For my last season as Artistic Director, I have chosen to explore aspects of this strangely potent art we call the theatre.

From the amateur theatricals of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the double lives led by Jack and Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, role-playing is a recurring motif of the season. Iago, in Othello, masks his villainy in the guise of a concerned friend, while Willy Loman, in Death of a Salesman, turns illusion inward, in a desperate effort to convince himself that all is well in his world.

The characters in Guys and Dolls – who include a nightclub performer – are larger-than-life caricatures, yet we feel as if we know them. At the same time, Something Rotten!, revived by popular demand, puts Shakespeare himself on stage as it spins its hilariously fanciful yarn

about the creation of the very genre to which it belongs.

Dramatic illusion delivers a surprising narrative twist in The King James Bible Play, while Waiting for Godot questions both our place in the universe and our expectations of drama itself.

Saturday, Sunday, Monday uses eccentric characters worthy of commedia dell’arte to raise a serious question: how can we rediscover the magic within each of us? Meanwhile, The Tao of the World reimagines a classic Restoration comedy for a modern-day world of wealth and privilege – and shows that we all have roles to play in making society work.

Finally, while some adults may look askance at “playacting,” no children do, for it is how they learn to navigate the world. Our explorations begin in childhood, and so it is fitting that our play for young people, The Hobbit, itself takes the form of a quest toward maturity.

I hope you will join us on our own quest this season: a quest for laughter, tears, excitement and inspiration, as we pay affectionate homage to the power of theatre in all our lives.

SYNOPSIS

In 1609, scholar Sir Henry Savile leads a fractious team of translators – John Bois, George Abbot, John Perrin and Savile’s eager son Willie – whose clashing egos, beliefs, griefs and ambitions shape the text of the emerging King James Bible. Their collaboration exposes tensions between faith, language, power and personal failing. In a present-day rehearsal room, director Martie and her ensemble of women bring these men to life, revealing their own artistic conflicts, insecurities and family wounds. As the actors embody their historical counterparts, past and present mirror one another, revealing how every act of translation – of scripture, of identity, of memory – is imperfect, embodied and deeply human.

Charlotte Corbeil-Coleman is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter. When she was 15 years old, her mother died, and Charlotte decided the only thing to do was to write a play and act in it. This was unhinged. It did not help her grief, but it did turn her into a writer. Charlotte has won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play, the Voaden Prize and the K.M. Hunter Artist Award. Her writing has also been nominated twice for the Governor General’s Literary Award. Charlotte’s work has been staged and commissioned by the most prestigious theatres in Canada, including the Stratford Festival, the National Arts Centre, the Citadel Theatre, Factory Theatre, Talk Is Free Theatre, the Coal Mine Theatre and Tarragon Theatre. Selected theatre credits include  Guarded Girls, Scratch, Twisted with Joseph Jomo Pierre, Sudden Death, Want Now, Madame Minister, Almost a Full Moon with Hawksley Workman, The King James Bible Play and Haunted House. I’ve spent so many years of my life coming to see shows at the Stratford Festival, and what has always fascinated and delighted me is the repertory system. How, one night, you can see an actor embody a character and, the next night, the same actor embody another, and how they can’t help but be in conversation with each other because each character passes through the same person. And in so many of these plays, the characters themselves have been played by so many different actors. Each actor builds on what came before while also striving to make it their own, shaped by who they are and what they’ve lived.

Translation is a passing through, a handing down, an attempt to keep the pure intention of something while also reaching towards the future and possibility of what it will become.

Over 400 years ago, a group of men worked on a new English translation of the Bible, inspired by how theatre companies – like Shakespeare’s – worked at the time; they divided themselves into six companies, each with a director.

The King James Bible was intended to be read aloud, and because of this each translator had to say each word aloud in order to approve it. They had to “perform” it for each other.

My relationship to the Bible was very much influenced by, and translated through, my parents’ and their parents’ relationship to it.

When my grandmother died, I inherited her King James Bible. I found pictures of me as a child slipped between pages, notes written in the margins, thoughts, names and certain passages underlined many times. I realized my grandmother was using the Bible as a way of translating her own life. The more I wrote this play, the more I began to see everything around me in some form of translation. The past wrestling with the future, trying to be something new while holding on to what came before.

Truthfully, I am reluctant to write playwright notes, to say in any way what I think this play is or want this play to be, as I want those who see it to project their own meaning onto it. What I will say is this: the more I read and reread the Bible, the more I think it’s about family.

This is a play about creating something. Whether that be a Bible, a play or a child. It’s about your relationship with who created you. Whether that be God … or your mother.

In theatre, the final act of translation is the audience: your interpretation of what you see and how it makes you feel. The magic of live performance is that you are affecting this show by choosing to be here, or accompanying someone who wants to be. By being here, you are an integral part of what these next two hours are, so thank you. Thank you for being part of the translation of this new play.

The Stratford Festival acknowledges the members of The Friends of the Festival for their continued contributions. This dedicated group of volunteers provides thousands of hours of support annually. They can be found everywhere –welcoming patrons to the theatre, answering questions, working on special projects, assisting at Meighen Forum events and so much more! We are so grateful for all they contribute to making each season possible.

FOR ASSISTANCE AND ACCESSIBILITY

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property rights associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to a mobile device for accessibility reasons, please see the House Manager before the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium.

*Complimentary beverages served within the members’ lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGES

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who contribute generously with financial gifts over and above their ticket purchase. Please consult stratfordfestival.ca/Membership

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim, or if we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take the health and safety of our patrons seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Festival staff member.
