TWO HIT MUSICALS ONE ICONIC STAGE AND

A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO

THIS ROUGH MAGIC The title above comes from a line in The Tempest, spoken by the sorcerer Prospero as he takes leave of his “so potent art” and embarks on a new phase of life. Theatre itself is a magical art, paradoxically using illusion to tell us truth. Its magic is “rough,” not perfect: while it can lead us to a better understanding, it cannot dictate where we go from there. Yet this need to explore our existence through the mimicry of performance seems hardwired into us, an essential part of being human. For my last season as Artistic Director, I have chosen to explore aspects of this strangely potent art we call the theatre. From the amateur theatricals of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the double lives led by Jack and Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, role-playing is a recurring motif of the season. Iago, in Othello, masks his villainy in the guise of a concerned friend, while Willy Loman, in Death of a Salesman, turns illusion inward, in a desperate effort to convince himself that all is well in his world. The characters in Guys and Dolls – who include a nightclub performer – are larger-than-life caricatures, yet we feel as if we know them. At the same time, Something Rotten!, revived by popular demand, puts Shakespeare himself on stage as it spins its hilariously fanciful yarn

about the creation of the very genre to which it belongs. Dramatic illusion delivers a surprising narrative twist in The King James Bible Play, while Waiting for Godot questions both our place in the universe and our expectations of drama itself. Saturday, Sunday, Monday uses eccentric characters worthy of commedia dell’arte to raise a serious question: how can we rediscover the magic within each of us? Meanwhile, The Tao of the World reimagines a classic Restoration comedy for a modern-day world of wealth and privilege – and shows that we all have roles to play in making society work. Finally, while some adults may look askance at “playacting,” no children do, for it is how they learn to navigate the world. Our explorations begin in childhood, and so it is fitting that our play for young people, The Hobbit, itself takes the form of a quest toward maturity. I hope you will join us on our own quest this season: a quest for laughter, tears, excitement and inspiration, as we pay affectionate homage to the power of theatre in all our lives.

SYNOPSIS

Comfort-loving Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is swept into an unexpected adventure when the Wizard Gandalf enlists him to accompany Thorin Oakenshield and his band of Dwarves on a perilous quest to reclaim their home beneath the Lonely Mountain from the Dragon Smaug. Along the journey across Middle‑earth, Bilbo faces Trolls, Goblins, Elves, giant spiders and the creature Gollum, from whom he acquires a mysterious and powerful ring. Through resourcefulness and courage, Bilbo grows into an unlikely hero, proving indispensable to the Company as their journey culminates in a great battle that determines the fate of the mountain and its inhabitants.

book by J.R.R. TOLKIEN John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) was a writer, artist, scholar and linguist. Most known for creating Middle-earth in his books The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (195455), a richly imagined world peopled by ancient and extraordinary beings. Tolkien was a distinguished academic and scholar in Old and Middle English and Old Norse at the University of Oxford, where he spent most of his adult life. He dedicated any spare time to his creativity, writing fantasy works and poetry, creating illustrations for his stories, and developing new languages and alphabets. His works explore universal themes of love and loss, courage and betrayal, humility and pride, thus lending his books enduring popularity and influence.

adapted by KIM SELODY Kim has worked as a playwright, director and actor in Canadian theatre for over 45 years. Kim has served as artistic director of the Playwrights Theatre Centre (formerly The New Play Centre), Carousel Players and Presentation House Theatre. He was a theatre officer at the Canada Council for five years. Most of his career has been spent working in theatre for young audiences, having created over 120 productions. As a playwright, Kim has adapted, written and co-created many plays for children, including Suddenly Shakespeare, Lovers and Liars, The Last Drop, Where the Wild Things Are, Only Birds and Fools Fly, L’envol de l’ange, Pop Pop, Baking Time, Jelly Belly Makes Garbage Delight of Alligator Pie, Silverwing and The Hobbit. As a collaborator, he has worked across Canada and internationally with companies in England, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the U.S., Belgium, Italy, Portugal and Australia. This adaptation of The Hobbit premièred at Manitoba Theatre for Young People in 1999, thanks to Leslee Silverman. It has been produced in Canada, the U.S. and England. This newest version was further developed with support from the Stratford Festival. Kim’s main collaborative partner has been, and still is, playwright/actor Linda A. Carson. Together, they continue to create work for young children, the latest being The Old Woman Who Lives in a Shoe. He is thankful for her support, and their two sons, Julian and Timothy.

THE CAST

If this is your first time coming into contact with The Hobbit, welcome. I hope you will enjoy your time with us in Middle-earth. If it is not … are you a Tolkien fan? Did you read the books growing up? Because I am, even though I did not. The books were just not readily available when I was growing up in Peru a few decades ago. I tried reading them in my first couple of years in Canada, but while my English was decent, it was not good enough to fully engage with these stories. I remember attempting The Fellowship of the Ring at 16 and getting stuck when I got to Tom Bombadil and Goldberry in the Old Forest. My entry point into Tolkien’s world would arrive a few years later, at university. There, I played both a role-playing game set in Middleearth and a collectible card game that was deeply steeped in the lore. The intricacies and possibilities of the stories piqued my curiosity. I dove into the books and, this time, I was hooked. Reading them required me to fully engage my imagination, and the characters became my friends. Through the years, those friends have taught me much about fellowship, courage and humanity. Those are the same things we want from a play. Sometimes, we want a world that makes sense, where a consistent logic allows our imaginations to soar. Other times, we want to be challenged to find a new way to decode the world. However, what we always crave is a more profound understanding of who we are and, hopefully, who we aspire to be. This play has that in spades. The first time I got to work on a production of Kim Selody’s adaptation of The Hobbit, I was awed by the imagination it takes to stage a story like this, and I saw audiences boldly following the winding path Bilbo takes there and back again. I was inspired by Bilbo’s bravery, especially because his true courage is never

The gift of recognition when they finally understand what Bilbo stands for is deeply moving. With all the history I have with this play, I still cannot help but feel like we need The Hobbit today more than ever. With a troubling return to “Might Makes Right” in our world, we need to be reminded that a small Hobbit can bring about profound change. That we do not need a big reward for the meaningful things we may do along the way – if two bags of gold are all we will ever need, we need not take more. If we become curious enough about the world to leave the comfort of our homes, we may go on a thrilling and unexpected adventure. In the end, we will return home, and the journey will take us There and Back Again.

THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS The Stratford Festival acknowledges the members of The Friends of the Festival for their continued contributions. This dedicated group of volunteers provides thousands of hours of support annually. They can be found everywhere – welcoming patrons to the theatre, answering questions, working on special projects, assisting at Meighen Forum events and so much more! We are so grateful for all they contribute to making each season possible.

FOR ASSISTANCE AND ACCESSIBILITY We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property rights associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to a mobile device for accessibility reasons, please see the House Manager before the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium. *Complimentary beverages served within the members lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGES

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who contribute generously with financial gifts over and above their ticket purchases. Please consult stratfordfestival.ca/Membership.

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim, or if we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take the health and safety of our patrons seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Festival staff member.
