A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO

THIS ROUGH MAGIC

The title above comes from a line in The Tempest, spoken by the sorcerer Prospero as he takes leave of his “so potent art” and embarks on a new phase of life.

Theatre itself is a magical art, paradoxically using illusion to tell us truth. Its magic is “rough,” not perfect: while it can lead us to a better understanding, it cannot dictate where we go from there. Yet this need to explore our existence through the mimicry of performance seems hardwired into us, an essential part of being human.

For my last season as Artistic Director, I have chosen to explore aspects of this strangely potent art we call the theatre.

From the amateur theatricals of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the double lives led by Jack and Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, role-playing is a recurring motif of the season. Iago, in Othello, masks his villainy in the guise of a concerned friend, while Willy Loman, in Death of a Salesman, turns illusion inward, in a desperate effort to convince himself that all is well in his world.

The characters in Guys and Dolls – who include a nightclub performer – are larger-than-life caricatures, yet we feel as if we know them. At the same time, Something Rotten!, revived by popular demand, puts Shakespeare himself on stage as it spins its hilariously fanciful yarn

about the creation of the very genre to which it belongs.

Dramatic illusion delivers a surprising narrative twist in The King James Bible Play, while Waiting for Godot questions both our place in the universe and our expectations of drama itself.

Saturday, Sunday, Monday uses eccentric characters worthy of commedia dell’arte to raise a serious question: how can we rediscover the magic within each of us? Meanwhile, The Tao of the World reimagines a classic Restoration comedy for a modern-day world of wealth and privilege – and shows that we all have roles to play in making society work.

Finally, while some adults may look askance at “playacting,” no children do, for it is how they learn to navigate the world. Our explorations begin in childhood, and so it is fitting that our play for young people, The Hobbit, itself takes the form of a quest toward maturity.

I hope you will join us on our own quest this season: a quest for laughter, tears, excitement and inspiration, as we pay affectionate homage to the power of theatre in all our lives.

SYNOPSIS

In the vibrant world of Renaissance London, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are determined to make their mark as playwrights – no easy feat when their flashy rival, William Shakespeare, is the toast of the town. Struggling for inspiration and desperate for a hit, Nick turns to an eccentric soothsayer whose wild prediction sends the brothers down an unexpected theatrical path. As they attempt to create something boldly new, they find themselves caught between ambition, rivalry, romance and the demands of showbiz. Their quest for originality unleashes a cascade of misunderstandings, surprises and theatrical mayhem in a world on the cusp of artistic change.

SometHING ROTTEN 2.0: Ex TRA ROTTEN!

In theatre, we work to deadlines. Opening night is set, tickets sold and hopes are high. We prep and rehearse for months, trusting the best idea wins. Given time to reassess our choices, we often find a way to be better. We explore what we already know works but might benefit from a closer look. Thus, Something Rotten! 2.0 was born: same great show, many of the same great people, but now, perhaps, Extra Rotten.

On a stage renowned for musicals and Shakespeare, the chance to smash the two together in one magical event is irresistible. Something Rotten! is a clever riff on what we love about both. It’s outrageous, and I will ensure it remains so, but it also has a wonderful heart.

Nick and Nigel Bottom, ambitious playwright brothers, face their greatest obstacle: William Shakespeare. Their problem was common at the time. Ask yourself: how many of Shakespeare’s contemporaries can you name? Now. Maybe Ben Jonson, maybe Marlowe or Kyd. There were many more. Yet, 400 years of history show it’s hard to be more relevant or popular than Shakespeare. The Bottom brothers will do whatever it takes to earn their place in history –by creating the world’s first musical.

I believe Shakespeare’s heart cemented his lasting appeal. His focus on simple human connection and experience made his revelations all the more remarkable. Romeo and Juliet capture what we yearn for in love, minus the tragedy, of course. We long for the thrill of first love, first touch and first kiss! The best musicals do the same, be it Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, The Music Man, you name it. Something Rotten! blends these elements, mixing the glitz of song and dance with drama. We’re drawn into the chaos of artistic creation and the sacrifices for the next great idea. And, yes, Shakespeare was a rockstar, but he was also an artist seeking some money, laughter, notoriety and eventually a peaceful country retreat. The Bottom brothers want a piece of that, and who can blame them? It’s a hard but wonderful life!

Mounting Something Rotten! at Stratford draws on everything I’ve learned working

on the Festival stage. I began at Stratford acting, singing, dancing, choreographing and associate directing on plays and musicals in repertory. I’ve also directed many of the musicals referenced in Something Rotten! on this very stage. I hope returning audience members enjoy the flashbacks as I borrow from my own past work.

Every time I stage a show on Stratford’s thrust stage, I re-imagine the entire production. The space demands it. This leads to new discoveries, ensuring that even if you’ve seen Something Rotten! before – even here –you’ve never seen it like this.

The company of Something Rotten! is extraordinary. They are some of the most talented, experienced, dedicated and delightful artists I’ve ever been lucky enough to work with. We have had such a wonderful time rehearsing, exploring and laughing through the process of working on this show. We truly hope that you will share in the joy of what our amazing team has put together and that you’ll find the experience of Something Rotten! not the least bit rotten at all.

Karey Kirkpatrick began his career as a screenwriter and songwriter for Disney Animation, where he penned The Rescuers Down Under and James and the Giant Peach. With more than a dozen feature films produced, screenplay credits include Chicken Run (Golden Globe nominee for Outstanding Comedy), Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, Charlotte’s Web, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Spiderwick Chronicles and Over the Hedge, which he also co-directed. He directed the Paramount Pictures film Imagine That, starring Eddie Murphy and co-produced, wrote and performed on the film’s soundtrack. He recently directed the Warner Brothers animated musical Smallfoot for which he also co-wrote the screenplay and the songs (with brother Wayne). He has most recently written the new Peanuts movie for Apple TV. Karey has won a number of Tony, Oscar and Grammy awards, and that number is zero. Other credits: husband of Nada, father of Sami, Maia and Finn.

Wayne Kirkpatrick is the Grammy Award-winning songwriter of “Change the World” by Eric Clapton (Song of the Year). Top 10 singles include “Every Heartbeat,” “Good for Me” (Amy Grant); “Wrapped Up in You” (Garth Brooks); “Boondocks,” “Bring It on Home,” “Little White Church” (Little Big Town); “Place in This World” (Michael W. Smith). He is a multi-formatted songwriter with songs recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Faith Hill, Joe Cocker, Gabe Dixon, Trisha Yearwood, Babyface and Peter Frampton, among others. His songs have been featured in TV shows (Grey’s Anatomy, True Blood, Hart of Dixie) and feature films (Almost Famous, Phenomenon, Smallfoot). Wayne lives in Nashville with his wife Fran and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018. Favourite productions: Kourtney, Shelby and Carson.

John O’Farrell’s novels have been translated into over 30 languages and adapted for TV and radio. He is one of a handful of British authors to have achieved best-seller status with both fiction and non-fiction. Titles include Things Can Only Get Better, The Best a Man Can Get, An Utterly Impartial History of Britain and The Man Who Forgot His Wife. He was one of the lead writers for the iconic British TV comedy shows Spitting Image and Have I Got News for You; film credits include Chicken Run and Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. With the Something Rotten! team, he co-wrote the Mrs. Doubtfire musical and, most recently, wrote the book Just For One Day, The Live Aid Musical, which played in London’s West End and the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto.

The Stratford Festival acknowledges the members of The Friends of the Festival for their continued contributions. This dedicated group of volunteers provides thousands of hours of support annually. They can be found everywhere –welcoming patrons to the theatre, answering questions, working on special projects, assisting at Meighen Forum events and so much more! We are so grateful for all they contribute to making each season possible.

FOR ASSISTANCE AND ACCESSIBILITY

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property rights associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to a mobile device for accessibility reasons, please see the House Manager before the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium.

*Complimentary beverages served within the members’ lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGE

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who contribute generously with financial gifts over and above their ticket purchase. Please consult stratfordfestival.ca/Membership

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim, or if we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take the health and safety of our patrons seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Festival staff member.
