A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO

THIS ROUGH MAGIC

The title above comes from a line in The Tempest, spoken by the sorcerer Prospero as he takes leave of his “so potent art” and embarks on a new phase of life.

Theatre itself is a magical art, paradoxically using illusion to tell us truth. Its magic is “rough,” not perfect: while it can lead us to a better understanding, it cannot dictate where we go from there. Yet this need to explore our existence through the mimicry of performance seems hardwired into us, an essential part of being human.

For my last season as Artistic Director, I have chosen to explore aspects of this strangely potent art we call the theatre.

From the amateur theatricals of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the double lives led by Jack and Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, role-playing is a recurring motif of the season. Iago, in Othello, masks his villainy in the guise of a concerned friend, while Willy Loman, in Death of a Salesman, turns illusion inward, in a desperate effort to convince himself that all is well in his world.

The characters in Guys and Dolls – who include a nightclub performer – are larger-than-life caricatures, yet we feel as if we know them. At the same time, Something Rotten!, revived by popular demand, puts Shakespeare himself on stage as it spins its hilariously fanciful yarn

about the creation of the very genre to which it belongs.

Dramatic illusion delivers a surprising narrative twist in The King James Bible Play, while Waiting for Godot questions both our place in the universe and our expectations of drama itself.

Saturday, Sunday, Monday uses eccentric characters worthy of commedia dell’arte to raise a serious question: how can we rediscover the magic within each of us? Meanwhile, The Tao of the World reimagines a classic Restoration comedy for a modern-day world of wealth and privilege – and shows that we all have roles to play in making society work.

Finally, while some adults may look askance at “playacting,” no children do, for it is how they learn to navigate the world. Our explorations begin in childhood, and so it is fitting that our play for young people, The Hobbit, itself takes the form of a quest toward maturity.

I hope you will join us on our own quest this season: a quest for laughter, tears, excitement and inspiration, as we pay affectionate homage to the power of theatre in all our lives.

SYNOPSIS

Saturday, Sunday, Monday unfolds inside a boisterous Neapolitan household, where long-simmering tensions rise to a boil over a single weekend. Patriarch Peppino, feeling unappreciated and misunderstood, suspects his wife, Donna Rosa, of infidelity. In turn, Donna Rosa feels neglected and unloved. Their marital strain fuels a chain of miscommunication that ripples through the extended family and neighbouring friends, each of whom adds their own quirks, grievances and comedic chaos. Across a weekend filled with arguments, humorous interruptions and heartfelt revelations, the household becomes a battleground of clashing personalities and long-buried frustrations. By Monday, the uproar subsides, honesty breaks through and Peppino and Donna Rosa begin to confront the truths that might finally allow them to heal.

Born in Naples on May 24, 1900, into a theatrical family led by actor Eduardo Scarpetta, Eduardo De Filippo began acting as a child in his father’s plays and had already established a promising career before completing military service from 1920 to 1922. By the late 1920s, he was widely recognized as a comic actor and soon developed a parallel career as a playwright. In 1931, he co-founded the Teatro Umoristico I De Filippo with his siblings Peppino and Titina, later forming Il Teatro di Eduardo with Titina in 1945. Over his career, he wrote some 40 plays, many internationally acclaimed, including Natale in casa Cupiello (1930), Napoli milionaria! (1945), Filumena Marturano (1946), Saturday, Sunday, Monday (1959) and The Art of Comedy (1964). He also appeared in numerous films and directed and adapted Napoli milionaria! for cinema. Honoured in 1980 and made a life senator in 1981, he died in Rome on October 31, 1984.

DONATO SANTERAMO

Donato Santeramo is a full professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Queen’s University. He is cross-appointed to the School of Drama and Music and is also associated with the Cultural Studies Graduate Program. Prof. Santeramo holds an appointment at the Graduate School of the University of Rome II. He has published monographs, editions and academic articles on literature, theatre, film and semiotics. He has also translated and staged works by contemporary Italian playwrights and served as dramaturge on several productions, including at the Stratford Festival (Napoli Milionaria! in 2018 and Grand Magic in 2023). Santeramo serves on the editorial boards of numerous academic journals. He was the artistic director of the Matera Film Festival from 2022 to 2025, where he inaugurated one of the first European sections on Indigenous cinema in collaboration with Montreal’s International First Peoples’ Film Festival. Dr. Santeramo is currently the director of the International Festival of the Arts in Celico, Italy (theatre, cinema, music and literature). He is also the recipient of the prestigious Queen’s Alumni Teaching Award.

Antoni Cimolino is Artistic Director of the Stratford Festival and a frequent director of Eduardo De Filippo’s work. Saturday, Sunday, Monday marks his fourth De Filippo production here at the Festival, his first as co-adapter and co-translator. He directed De Filippo’s Filumena in 1997, Napoli Milionaria! in 2018 and Grand Magic in 2023. Saturday, Sunday, Monday is his 31st production as a director at the Stratford Festival.

TH e DawNING Of A New Day

This play’s very title seems to suggest something regular and ordinary: the end of a work week, followed by a day of rest, and then the grind starts again. And one would not be surprised to discover that the play is about a family, their neighbours and friends, nor to find that its action involves cooking, eating and cleaning up. These are the kinds of daily activities and relationships that we too often take for granted and perhaps barely notice as we move through our lives.

Yet beneath this veneer of the ordinary, Eduardo De Filippo has hidden something extraordinary: a couple’s journey from profound misunderstanding to a new beginning that promises hope for a renewed marriage.

Written in 1959, as De Filippo’s own marriage was breaking apart, Saturday, Sunday, Monday seems to express the writer’s longing for a life in which such a marital disaster is averted, in which the healing power of affection between family and friends brings about a future filled with love.

It takes place in a time before the common acceptance of feminism, the birth control pill or even the availability of a divorce in Italy. This is a world of stay-at-home moms, with all the limitations that a religious and conservative society once prescribed for women: endless service to one’s family, no career of one’s own and the potential for subjugation to a husband’s will. But in De Filippo’s comedy, three generations of strongwilled women negotiate with the men in their lives to be seen and respected within a loving relationship.

At the centre of the play is the marriage of Rosa and Peppino. From the first scene, it is evident that they no longer truly hear or understand one another. Jealousy has taken hold of Peppino, who imagines that his wife has betrayed him with their neighbour. Peppino takes Rosa for granted, yet fears that someone else will value her and lure her away.

Their daughter Giulianella is quarrelling with her fiancé over an audition to become an announcer in the then still new medium of television. And in Peppino’s sister, Aunt Meme, we see a woman who has struck out on her own independent path despite the pressures of convention in a deeply Catholic country. She has written an autobiography with the title Yes, But It Takes Courage

The relationships within this family and with their friends are stronger than they at first appear. Beneath their seemingly mundane daily activities lies a depth of feeling and loyalty that gives them the

power not only to forgive awkward misunderstandings but to move towards a better future.

In the plays of Anton Chekhov, actions and characters are both funny and sad, depending on one’s point of view. And that same duality permeates the fibre of this play, in which the daily customs of the family can be seen as mundane yet beautiful, and the people themselves are regular folk yet quirky enough to compose a Neapolitan comic troupe. De Filippo seems to suggest that even when our lives are unspectacular, they can yet be worthy of the stage.

And while the title suggests an unchanging weekly repetition, during this particular Saturday, Sunday, Monday, a profound rupture occurs. Saturday sees the last day of a broken marriage, on Sunday an eruption takes place that shatters it forever, and on Monday something takes place that leads to the start of a new life for Rosa and Peppino. And there is nothing ordinary about that.

Stratford: Francesca has spent 19 years working as a design assistant and designer at the Stratford Festival, including her work as designer on The Winter’s Tale, London Assurance, Grand Magic, Twelfth Night (costume); Richard III, Three Tall Women, Birds of a Kind, Henry VIII, Oscar Remembered (set and costume); Three Musketeers (set). The Stratford Festival acknowledges the members of The Friends of the Festival for their continued contributions. This dedicated group of volunteers provides thousands of hours of support annually. They can be found everywhere –welcoming patrons to the theatre, answering questions, working on special projects, assisting at Meighen Forum events and so much more! We are so grateful for all they contribute to making each season possible.

FOR ASSISTANCE AND ACCESSIBILITY

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property rights associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to a mobile device for accessibility reasons, please see the House Manager before the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium.

*Complimentary beverages served within the members’ lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGES

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who contribute generously with financial gifts over and above their ticket purchase. Please consult stratfordfestival.ca/Membership .

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim, or if we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take the health and safety of our patrons seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Festival staff member.
