THIS ROUGH MAGIC

The title above comes from a line in The Tempest, spoken by the sorcerer Prospero as he takes leave of his “so potent art” and embarks on a new phase of life.

Theatre itself is a magical art, paradoxically using illusion to tell us truth. Its magic is “rough,” not perfect: while it can lead us to a better understanding, it cannot dictate where we go from there. Yet this need to explore our existence through the mimicry of performance seems hardwired into us, an essential part of being human.

For my last season as Artistic Director, I have chosen to explore aspects of this strangely potent art we call the theatre.

From the amateur theatricals of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the double lives led by Jack and Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, role-playing is a recurring motif of the season. Iago, in Othello, masks his villainy in the guise of a concerned friend, while Willy Loman, in Death of a Salesman, turns illusion inward, in a desperate effort to convince himself that all is well in his world.

The characters in Guys and Dolls – who include a nightclub performer – are larger-than-life caricatures, yet we feel as if we know them. At the same time, Something Rotten!, revived by popular demand, puts Shakespeare himself on stage as it spins its hilariously fanciful yarn

about the creation of the very genre to which it belongs.

Dramatic illusion delivers a surprising narrative twist in The King James Bible Play, while Waiting for Godot questions both our place in the universe and our expectations of drama itself.

Saturday, Sunday, Monday uses eccentric characters worthy of commedia dell’arte to raise a serious question: how can we rediscover the magic within each of us? Meanwhile, The Tao of the World reimagines a classic Restoration comedy for a modern-day world of wealth and privilege – and shows that we all have roles to play in making society work.

Finally, while some adults may look askance at “playacting,” no children do, for it is how they learn to navigate the world. Our explorations begin in childhood, and so it is fitting that our play for young people, The Hobbit, itself takes the form of a quest toward maturity.

I hope you will join us on our own quest this season: a quest for laughter, tears, excitement and inspiration, as we pay affectionate homage to the power of theatre in all our lives.

SYNOPSIS

Hermia and Lysander are devoted to one another, but her father forbids their marriage and insists she wed Demetrius, with whom Hermia’s best friend Helena is besotted. Hoping to escape her father’s demands, Hermia and Lysander flee into the forest, with Demetrius and a determined Helena close behind. There, Oberon, king of the fairies, sets an enchantment on his queen, Titania – and, through the meddling of Puck, Oberon’s jester, the four lovers are unwittingly ensnared in the magic’s confusion. Meanwhile, Puck tangles with a troupe of amateur actors, heightening the night’s mischief. As night deepens, identities blur, lovers quarrel, fairies and mortals intermingle, and the boundaries between dream and reality dissolve. What resolution will the dawn bring?

Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor. By 1592, Shakespeare had written several plays, including Henry VI, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Titus Andronicus, establishing himself as a well-known London writer and actor.

During a plague outbreak in 1593, Shakespeare turned his attention to his long narrative poems, including “Venus and Adonis,” and began writing Shakespeare’s Sonnets, a series of 154 complex poems. By 1595, Shakespeare was back in the theatre, writing and acting for the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, taking on roles such as Richard III and Hamlet.

In 1597, he purchased Stratford’s New Place and in 1599 became a shareholder in London’s newly built Globe Theatre. James I awarded Shakespeare’s company a royal patent, becoming known as the King’s Men, in 1603. Shakespeare began to spend most of his time in Stratford from around 1609 until his death on April 23, 1616.

WHAT FOOLS

BE AS THOU WAST WONT TO BE, SEE AS THOU WAST WONT TO SEE

Like many, A Midsummer Night’s Dream was my first introduction to Shakespeare’s extraordinary universe, and I instantly fell under its spell.

A fairy tale where a lost child could discover family in another realm, a donkey could dance with a Fairy Queen and the course of true love could find its way through an enchanted forest.

A play that revels in disorder, celebrating the fierce beauty of chaos and the promise of new beginnings.

A play that speaks to a fundamental truth about our place as humans in the great cosmos, our openness to change and our capacity for love.

“Be as thou wast wont to be, see as thou wast wont to see.”

The potent spell of remedy cast by Oberon before Aurora’s harbinger threatens to shed light on the night’s events; the antidote to Cupid’s powerful love bolt, offering the possibility of becoming something other than what the world decided you would be.

In our production, that world is the late Victorian era, a post-Darwinian age obsessed with order and control, relegating the irrational and unexplained to the realm of lunatics, lovers and poets.

Our production begins outside the walls of the palace, with the birth of the changeling child and the death of Titania’s votaress, the domestic wound at the heart of the fairy world.

We begin in the forest, a liminal realm where mortals and fairies intersect, matriarchal wisdom reigns, and nature’s cycles are sovereign, indifferent to the will of Victorian man.

Inside the palace, we witness the first acts of rebellion against the Victorian façade. A Duke’s desire to accelerate the natural lunar cycle and a father invoking ancient law – both countered

by a young woman’s brave defiance in the face of death, knowing not “by what power she is made bold,” choosing the course of true love against all odds.

Across town, another quiet rebellion has begun; a misfit band of mechanicals, in our production roustabouts from the travelling Victorian circus, have gathered to rehearse a play. They are the Victorian working class, the labourers who toil behind the scenes to make the spectacle possible: visible, yet invisible. Their desire to perform isn’t just comic ambition; it is a fearless act of transgression against their prescribed social status; it is a bid for dignity, a bid to be seen.

Outside the city walls, in the untamed forest, the unconscious is allowed to surface, revealing the great paradox of Shakespeare’s love potion; mortal desires suppressed under the “enchantment” of Victorian order are set free under its spell; love in idleness, love unmoored from reason.

The chaos of the forest gives everyone permission to want what they actually want –stripping away the socially constructed self and allowing something new to grow in its place.

This play does not end with the defeat of order or with the defeat of chaos. It ends with something new built from the alchemy of their collision. It plunges us into a melee of quick bright things coming to confusion – and it trusts that confusion is how we find our way to truth.

2026: Rose Petal in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Stratford debut. Vivienne currently attends Bedford Public School and has grown up in beautiful Stratford with her family and her dog, Arlo. Vivienne loves the creative arts, sports and dance. She has studied at Cirquesmith, Onstage Dance, Kindhearted Studio, Stratford Dance Co. and Flight Studio. Vivienne is also a proud member of the Stratford Stingers volleyball team and has also played for the Rotary soccer and hockey leagues. A member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, the Stratford Festival engages, under the terms of the Canadian Theatre Agreement, professional artists who are members of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association.

Stage crew, scenic carpenters, drivers, wigs and makeup attendants, wardrobe attendants, production wardrobe staff, facilities staff and audience development representatives are members of Local 357 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

Scenic artists are members of IATSE Local 828.

The musicians, musical directors, conductors and orchestra contractors engaged by the Stratford Festival are members of the Toronto Musicians’ Association, Local 149 of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada.

They can be found everywhere –welcoming patrons to the theatre, answering questions, working on special projects, assisting at Meighen Forum events and so much more! We are so grateful for all they contribute to making each season possible.

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property rights associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to a mobile device for accessibility reasons, please see the House Manager before the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium.

*Complimentary beverages served within the members lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGES

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who contribute generously with financial gifts over and above their ticket purchases. Please consult stratfordfestival.ca/Membership

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim, or if we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take the health and safety of our patrons seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Festival staff member.
