A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO

SEEKING HARMONY What do I aim for when choosing a playbill?

I aim to celebrate life’s joys without shying away from life’s ills. In a theatre, we bear witness to intense experiences without risk to ourselves and we are made better for it. We may laugh, we may cry, but in either case we look to theatre to inspire and invigorate us, to make us more fully alive, more in harmony with our fellow human beings.

Conflict and passion are the stuff of theatre and in planning our 2025 season theme—Apollo, Venus & Mars: Reflections on Harmony, Love and War—I have been struck by how these seeming opposites are intimately linked.

Most conflict is driven not by random hatred but by some passionate vision of how things should be—a vision we feel impelled to defend against whatever we perceive, rightly or wrongly, as a threat. Thus brothers are pitted against brothers in As You Like It, friendship and love breed fatal jealousy in The Winter’s Tale and the child-deprived title character of Macbeth seeks to eliminate the lineages of his rivals.

To an orphan bereft of parental love, the world must seem a lonely battleground— but the spirits of unparented youth emerge

triumphant in our new dramatic adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and in the beloved musical Annie. In our other musical, the hilariously witty Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, con men try to prey on seemingly vulnerable female hearts, while in Sense and Sensibility, hearts are held hostage to economic insecurity. Meanwhile, in a self-declared “war” between the amoral aristocrats of Dangerous Liaisons, desire is weaponized to hurt and harm.

With its visceral description of the realities of combat, The Art of War brought me to tears when I first read it, while the new play Ransacking Troy delights us with its unexpectedly comic take on a mythical conflict. But the play that unites the threads that run through this season’s playbill is Forgiveness, a story about families finding their way beyond bitter wartime experiences to a place of resolution and healing.

To celebrate life’s joys in harmony with others.

This Festival season, as always, I hope that will prove true for you.

SYNOPSIS Blinded by jealousy, King Leontes falsely accuses his pregnant wife Hermione and his best friend Polixenes of an affair, setting into motion a series of catastrophes that will destroy his wife and son and leave his

infant daughter abandoned to the elements on a distant island.

Seeing the folly of his ways, Leontes vows to live out his days atoning for his actions. Sixteen years later, the king is offered an unlikely chance at redemption. A late play from Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale offers a beguiling blend of comedy, tragedy and mystery.

PLAY BY

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor. By 1592, Shakespeare had written several plays, including Henry VI, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Titus Andronicus, establishing himself as a well-known London writer and actor.

During a plague outbreak in 1593, Shakespeare turned his attention to his long narrative poems, including “Venus and Adonis,” and began writing the Sonnets, a series of 154 complex poems. By 1595, Shakespeare was back in the theatre, writing and acting for the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. In 1597, he purchased Stratford’s New Place and in 1599 became a shareholder in London’s newly built Globe Theatre.

James I awarded Shakespeare’s company a royal patent, becoming known as the King’s Men, in 1603. Shakespeare began to spend most of his time in Stratford from around 1609 until his death on April 23, 1616.

To Be Boy Eternal

a great dramatist responding to his own questions of love and faith. The Winter’s Tale is a story of two friends from childhood who grow up and eventually one becomes irrationally and inexplicably jealous of the other’s relationship with his own wife.

Yet in their idyllic childhood they longed “to be boy eternal.”

The play seems to ask us what happens in the journey from boy to man? How does that innocence transform to the ambition, competition and attendant insecurity of manhood? How does the green-eyed monster called “jealousy” appear?

And how do those behaviours impact the women and children close to those men?

DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY ANTONI CIMOLINO “A sad tale’s best for winter.”

So whispers the young boy Mamillius as he prepares to tell a tale of sprites and goblins to his mother. A winter’s tale. A tale best told by a fire.

Perhaps a tale of kings and queens, improbable events, of children lost and children found.

But the boy never gets to tell his story, as he is interrupted by his father who has a tale of his own to tell. His is a story of immense drama based upon a husband’s senseless jealousy. It explores the darkest corners of human nature and ultimately becomes a story of atonement, forgiveness and second chances.

There is a strangely autobiographical element to Shakespeare’s last plays. In his final solely authored play, The Tempest, the central character Prospero is a father and a magician who refers to his magic as his Art. In The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare’s penultimate play, he explores the power of art in many forms: from sculpture and dance; to song and story. Here art brings to life the wondrous, the miraculous. It is an art that creates magic.

Echoing the events in this play Shakespeare lost a young son and had two daughters. We don’t know much about his relationship with his wife except that his work in London and her residency in Stratford probably kept them often apart.

He wrote several toweringly powerful plays about jealousy and it is in this play that one sees

In The Winter’s Tale if they are to avoid becoming fodder for tragedy they are forced to become heroic. And they do—in their strength, intelligence and endurance they shape a better world.

The women and children of this story are inspiring. They work miracles. Sadly, we see in our world today that it is not possible for every woman or child to do the same.

But the power of The Winter’s Tale lies in it being a tale. It is simultaneously funny and sad and filled with unlikely and strange events. It is fantastical and has a cast of characters that include Time itself, a delightful group of country bumpkins and a bear who gives rise to the famed stage direction “Exit Pursued by a Bear.”

And yet in it we feel the power of truth.

A truth that goes deeper and rises above naturalism. It is a tale “not for an age but for all time” as Ben Jonson wrote of William Shakespeare himself. In it we witness the eternal tension between instinct and reason, between nature and art and between the Great Goddess Nature and Apollo.

And in this tension The Winter’s Tale suggests the most important questions of any person’s life: what and who do we love? And where do we place our faith?

A FUSION OF TEXT, MUSIC AND THOUGHT In this dynamic work of language, music and insight, commissioned by the Stratford Festival, you will be transported into the heart of The Divine Comedy and Dante Alighieri's descent into hell. You will be immersed in this creation by DLT, guided through the experience

by Dr. Donato Santeramo of Queen’s University as you revel in the musicality of medieval Italian spoken by Florentine artist Daniele Bartolini, beautifully enhanced with original music by renowned composer Andrea Gozzi.

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to an electronic device for accessibility needs, please discuss with the House Manager prior to the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium. *Complimentary beverages served within the members lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGE

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who generously contribute financial gifts beyond their ticket purchases. For information on how to access our lounges, please visit stratfordfestival.ca/Membership.

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim or in the event we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take patron health and safety seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance for you if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Stratford Festival team member.
