SEEKING HARMONY

What do I aim for when choosing a playbill?

I aim to celebrate life’s joys without shying away from life’s ills. In a theatre, we bear witness to intense experiences without risk to ourselves and we are made better for it. We may laugh, we may cry, but in either case we look to theatre to inspire and invigorate us, to make us more fully alive, more in harmony with our fellow human beings.

Conflict and passion are the stuff of theatre and in planning our 2025 season theme—Apollo, Venus & Mars: Reflections on Harmony, Love and War—I have been struck by how these seeming opposites are intimately linked.

Most conflict is driven not by random hatred but by some passionate vision of how things should be—a vision we feel impelled to defend against whatever we perceive, rightly or wrongly, as a threat. Thus brothers are pitted against brothers in As You Like It, friendship and love breed fatal jealousy in The Winter’s Tale and the child-deprived title character of Macbeth seeks to eliminate the lineages of his rivals.

To an orphan bereft of parental love, the world must seem a lonely battleground— but the spirits of unparented youth emerge

triumphant in our new dramatic adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and in the beloved musical Annie. In our other musical, the hilariously witty Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, con men try to prey on seemingly vulnerable female hearts, while in Sense and Sensibility, hearts are held hostage to economic insecurity. Meanwhile, in a self-declared “war” between the amoral aristocrats of Dangerous Liaisons, desire is weaponized to hurt and harm.

With its visceral description of the realities of combat, The Art of War brought me to tears when I first read it, while the new play Ransacking Troy delights us with its unexpectedly comic take on a mythical conflict. But the play that unites the threads that run through this season’s playbill is Forgiveness, a story about families finding their way beyond bitter wartime experiences to a place of resolution and healing.

To celebrate life’s joys in harmony with others. This Festival season, as always, I hope that will prove true for you.

SYNOPSIS

Nick is a young Canadian painter who arrives in war-torn Europe to serve his country, not with a rifle, but with a paintbrush.

Tasked with documenting the front lines, he must capture a true picture of war through

art. As he witnesses the sacrifice and resilience of Canadian soldiers, Nick grapples with his role as both observer and participant. Inspired by Canada’s official war art program, the play explores how a young nation comes to understand itself through the work of its artists.

Yvette Nolan (Algonquin) is a playwright, director and dramaturge who works across Turtle Island. Her works include the plays The Diviners (with Vern Thiessen), The Unplugging, the dance-opera Bearing, the libretto Shanawdithit, the short play-for-film Katharsis and the VR piece Reconciling. She recently directed Frances Koncan’s Women of the Fur Trade at the Stratford Festival and the Globe Theatre in Regina, Julie Tamiko Manning’s Mizushōbai at Tableau d’Hôte, Leah-Simone Bowen’s The Flood at Imago, both in Montreal, and Donna-Michelle St. Bernard’s The First Stone at New Harlem and GCTC in Toronto and Ottawa. From 2003 to 2011, she served as artistic director of Native Earth Performing Arts, Canada’s oldest professional Indigenous theatre, where she helped create Death of a Chief, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Her book, Medicine Shows, about Indigenous performance in Canada, was published by Playwrights Canada Press in 2015.

Many Canadians don’t know this—I didn’t know it either before reading this play—but Canada’s best-known visual records of war stem from four official war art programs: the Canadian War Memorials Fund from the First World War, the Canadian War Records from the Second World War, the Canadian Armed Forces Artists Program from the Cold War era and the Canadian Forces Artists Program (CFAP), which is still running today.

Lord Beaverbrook led the first initiative, which was privately funded. Beaverbrook envisioned war art not only as a historical record but as an expression of national identity. During the Second World War, it was the artists themselves who advocated for the government to fund a similar program, which was established three years later as the Canadian War Records.

Interest in war art was renewed during the Cold War. In 2001, the Department of National Defence launched the CFAP, which encompassed all art forms: visual, literary and dramatic. The program grants artists considerable freedom, including space for dissonance and protest. Historically, these programs were largely anglophone, with limited participation from Québécois, IBPOC and women artists—but that is changing.

When Yvette spoke to me about visiting the exhibition of Canadian wartime art at the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa (now called the Canadian Museum of History), she kept returning to the image of a war artist walking alongside fellow infantry in a war zone, not carrying weapons but sketchbooks and paintbrushes. Artists risked their lives to witness, to feel and to translate the devastation into something the people back home might begin to understand. This image would not leave her and it’s what compelled her to write The Art of War

Our protagonist, Nick, wears a soldier’s uniform, but he doesn’t pick up a gun. He is a war artist

tasked with capturing a truth too large, too fragmented and too painful to hold. His journey is one of becoming an artist, a witness and a human trying to find order in the chaos of war. The play poses difficult and necessary questions about the cost of being an artist. What does it take to tell the truth? What does it mean to be an artist when the world is burning and art feels both vital and insufficient?

This play reminds us of what art offers in times of war, pandemic or personal upheaval when we are searching for clarity in the chaos. Artists walk the front lines of grief, transformation and resilience. It’s no small task. They face fear, burnout, poverty and self-doubt. They question their purpose, their impact, their voice. And still, artists show up because art is how we make sense of what we value as human beings.

This story comes at a time when war once again dominates the headlines. Iran, Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan. We are not immune, nor are we separate. The questions at the heart of this play are not historical—they are immediate.

Yvette, so beautifully through the character of Nick, is insisting that we must persist. Despite the noise, the fear, the uncertainty, we must keep going; we must try to make sense of the senseless for ourselves, for our communities, for the future.

It’s a kind of hope we need, which is why this play makes me cry every time I read it.

OUR TEAM

Each season at the Stratford Festival is a miracle. We start each year with “two planks and a passion,” and within months, the phenomenal workers on stage and behind the scenes work together to deliver magical experiences for our audiences.

FOR ASSISTANCE AND ACCESSIBILITY

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to an electronic device for accessibility needs, please discuss with the House Manager prior to the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium.

*Complimentary beverages served within the members lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGE

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who generously contribute financial gifts beyond their ticket purchases. For information on how to access our lounges, please visit stratfordfestival.ca/Membership.

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim or in the event we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take patron health and safety seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance for you if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Stratford Festival team member.
