SEEKING HARMONY

What do I aim for when choosing a playbill?

I aim to celebrate life’s joys without shying away from life’s ills. In a theatre, we bear witness to intense experiences without risk to ourselves and we are made better for it. We may laugh, we may cry, but in either case we look to theatre to inspire and invigorate us, to make us more fully alive, more in harmony with our fellow human beings.

Conflict and passion are the stuff of theatre and in planning our 2025 season theme—Apollo, Venus & Mars: Reflections on Harmony, Love and War—I have been struck by how these seeming opposites are intimately linked.

Most conflict is driven not by random hatred but by some passionate vision of how things should be—a vision we feel impelled to defend against whatever we perceive, rightly or wrongly, as a threat. Thus brothers are pitted against brothers in As You Like It, friendship and love breed fatal jealousy in The Winter’s Tale and the child-deprived title character of Macbeth seeks to eliminate the lineages of his rivals.

To an orphan bereft of parental love, the world must seem a lonely battleground— but the spirits of unparented youth emerge

triumphant in our new dramatic adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and in the beloved musical Annie. In our other musical, the hilariously witty Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, con men try to prey on seemingly vulnerable female hearts, while in Sense and Sensibility, hearts are held hostage to economic insecurity. Meanwhile, in a self-declared “war” between the amoral aristocrats of Dangerous Liaisons, desire is weaponized to hurt and harm.

With its visceral description of the realities of combat, The Art of War brought me to tears when I first read it, while the new play Ransacking Troy delights us with its unexpectedly comic take on a mythical conflict. But the play that unites the threads that run through this season’s playbill is Forgiveness, a story about families finding their way beyond bitter wartime experiences to a place of resolution and healing.

To celebrate life’s joys in harmony with others. This Festival season, as always, I hope that will prove true for you.

SYNOPSIS

Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel follows the travails of the Dashwood sisters—sensible, subdued Elinor and the passionate Marianne—after their father’s passing leaves their family dependent on their half-brother, John Dashwood, the man who has inherited the family fortune. Unfortunately, he and his scheming wife,

Fanny, are not keen on sharing, forcing the Dashwood sisters and their mother to beg lodgings at a wealthy cousin’s estate. When suitors, suitable and otherwise, start courting the Dashwood girls, the sisters must blend sense with sensibility to protect their hearts and reputations. Bristling with wit, cutting social commentary and old-fashioned romance brimming with longing and tender affection, Sense and Sensibility is pure Regency Period delight.

ADAPTATION BY KATE HAMILL

Kate Hamill is an actor/playwright and Wall Street Journal’s Playwright of the Year, 2017. Her work includes her play Sense and Sensibility (in which she originated the role of Marianne)—winner, Off-Broadway Alliance Award, 2016; nominee, Drama League Award; 265+ performances Off-Broadway. Other plays include Vanity Fair at the Pearl Theatre (in which she originated the role of Becky Sharp; nominee, Off-Broadway Alliance Award, 2017), Pride and Prejudice at Primary Stages and Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (originated the role of Lizzy Bennet; nominee, Off-Broadway Alliance Award). Kate’s plays have been produced Off-Broadway at various theatres, including A.R.T., Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Guthrie, Seattle Rep, Dallas Theater Center, PlayMakers Rep, Folger Theatre (eight Helen Hayes Award nominations; winner, Best Production—Sense and Sensibility), Arvada Center and others. She has upcoming productions at Shakespeare Theatre of D.C., A.C.T., Trinity Rep, Portland Center Stage, Syracuse Stage, Pittsburgh Public, Kansas City Rep, Dorset Theatre Festival and more. BOOK BY JANE AUSTEN

Jane Austen, born in 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, is a celebrated English author known for her social commentary and wit, offering insight into the lives of early 19th-century women.

Austen began writing parodies of romantic fiction as a teenager in the 1790s. In 1811, Austen’s brother, Henry, helped her negotiate with a publisher to publish her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, followed by Pride and Prejudice (1813), which received highly favourable reviews. In 1814, Austen published Mansfield Park, followed by Emma in 1815. All of Austen’s novels were published anonymously.

Although not widely recognized during her life, Austen’s works gained popularity after 1869 and are now considered literary classics. Her six completed novels—Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey (1817) and Persuasion (1817)—are beloved worldwide and have inspired numerous adaptations and sequels and spawned many festivals in Jane Austen’s honour.

A Love Story in Many ForMs

DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY DARYL CLORAN

I love theatre. I love the magic of it. I love the possibility that only exists in the ephemeral moment shared by the actors and the audience when we come together for a play. This magical possibility is at the heart of Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Sense and Sensibility Her adaptation is inventive, fun and physical. Jane Austen’s classic story and characters have made such a deep impression on many readers over centuries; it is a joy to share this adaptation that brings that world to life with all the magic of theatre.

This is a story about love in its many forms. Romantic love. Love between sisters. Love between a mother and her daughters. Near the end of the play, the sisters, Elinor and Marianne, have an exchange about Elinor’s feelings for Edward Ferrars that always stands out to me: MARIANNE.

And yet you do love him?

ELINOR.

Yes. But I do not love only him—and I was glad to spare my loved ones from my unhappiness. Elinor is indeed in love with Edward. But she makes the choices she does because she also loves her family.

Sense and Sensibility is a love story wrapped in a coming-of-age story. We follow two young women who are finding their voices and agency to make their own choices in the face of societal expectations. We experience Marianne and Elinor’s personal growth through the growth of their relationship as they both wrestle with the complexities of romantic love. The story takes place in Regency England, where societal expectations rule everything,

so our heroines face a world full of gossip and judgement. It is so vital that Kate Hamill has ingeniously (and theatrically!) created a chorus of gossips that lead us through the play, spying, judging and commenting on everything. So many decisions are made based on what others think or how society might judge; it is very easy to see the contemporary parallels we experience with social media. And while we are separated from the Dashwoods by centuries, we are also surrounded by fear, suspicion and judgement. In the face of that fact, it is wonderful to tell a joyous story that celebrates the triumph of love.

Our production is constantly swirling in motion, but keep your eyes open for all the theatrical playfulness. One of my favourites is the intentional doubling. Many of the cast are playing two roles. Not only is it a great joy to watch an actor sink their teeth into two contrasting roles, but the paired roles often have significant (and fun) thematic resonance.

I hope you leave our production thinking: “I love theatre! I can’t wait to see another play!” I hope you are inspired by the strength and relationship of the women at the heart of this play. And, in a very difficult and stressful time, I hope you laugh and find joy and surprise in our theatrical invention.

If you leave our production and buy a ticket to another play, we have done our jobs. If you leave our production and are kind to the next person you meet because your heart is joy-filled, we have done our jobs. If you leave our production reminded of the power and importance of love and your belief in our shared humanity, we have done our jobs. Theatre is magic. I feel so lucky that it is my job and I’m thrilled to share this production with you.

GOBLIN:OEDIPUS

A SPONTANEOUS THEATRE CREATION BY REBECCA NORTHAN AND BRUCE HORAK WITH ELLIS LALONDE

Following their highly acclaimed unconventional performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth in 2023, the goblins will be making a triumphant return to the Meighen Forum in 2025. Taking on another roller-coaster theatrical classic, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, audiences can anticipate glorious drama with unearthly charm as the goblins are determined to delve deeper into the timeless story to o er up a cautionary tale of patricide, incest and eye-gouging comedy.

In this dynamic work of language, music and insight, commissioned by the Stratford Festival, you will be transported into the heart of The Divine Comedy and Dante Alighieri's descent into hell. You will be immersed in this creation by DLT, guided through the experience by Dr. Donato Santeramo of Queen’s University as you revel in the musicality of medieval Italian spoken by Florentine artist Daniele Bartolini, beautifully enhanced with original music by renowned composer Andrea Gozzi.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium.

MEMBERS LOUNGE

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim or in the event we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take patron health and safety seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance for you if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Stratford Festival team member.
