A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO

SEEKING HARMONY What do I aim for when choosing a playbill? I aim to celebrate life’s joys without shying away from life’s ills. In a theatre, we bear witness to intense experiences without risk to ourselves and we are made better for it. We may laugh, we may cry, but in either case we look to theatre to inspire and invigorate us, to make us more fully alive, more in harmony with our fellow human beings. Conflict and passion are the stuff of theatre and in planning our 2025 season theme—Apollo, Venus & Mars: Reflections on Harmony, Love and War—I have been struck by how these seeming opposites are intimately linked. Most conflict is driven not by random hatred but by some passionate vision of how things should be—a vision we feel impelled to defend against whatever we perceive, rightly or wrongly, as a threat. Thus brothers are pitted against brothers in As You Like It, friendship and love breed fatal jealousy in The Winter’s Tale and the child-deprived title character of Macbeth seeks to eliminate the lineages of his rivals. To an orphan bereft of parental love, the world must seem a lonely battleground— but the spirits of unparented youth emerge

triumphant in our new dramatic adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and in the beloved musical Annie. In our other musical, the hilariously witty Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, con men try to prey on seemingly vulnerable female hearts, while in Sense and Sensibility, hearts are held hostage to economic insecurity. Meanwhile, in a self-declared “war” between the amoral aristocrats of Dangerous Liaisons, desire is weaponized to hurt and harm. With its visceral description of the realities of combat, The Art of War brought me to tears when I first read it, while the new play Ransacking Troy delights us with its unexpectedly comic take on a mythical conflict. But the play that unites the threads that run through this season’s playbill is Forgiveness, a story about families finding their way beyond bitter wartime experiences to a place of resolution and healing. To celebrate life’s joys in harmony with others. This Festival season, as always, I hope that will prove true for you.

PLAY BY

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor. By 1592, Shakespeare had written several plays, including Henry VI, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Titus Andronicus, establishing himself as a well-known London writer and actor. During a plague outbreak in 1593, Shakespeare turned his attention to his long narrative poems, including “Venus and Adonis,” and began writing the Sonnets, a series of 154 complex poems. By 1595, Shakespeare was back in the theatre, writing and acting for the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. In 1597, he purchased Stratford’s New Place and in 1599 became a shareholder in London’s newly built Globe Theatre. James I awarded Shakespeare’s company a royal patent, becoming known as the King’s Men, in 1603. Shakespeare began to spend most of his time in Stratford from around 1609 until his death on April 23, 1616.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY ROBERT LEPAGE Of all Shakespeare plays, Macbeth is the shortest. Throughout the ages, many scholars and specialists have entertained the idea that this is because there are at least two or three missing scenes. But of course, none of them agree on which ones they might be. Whatever the reason for its brevity, this great story doesn’t seem to have any of its limbs missing and reads as an impactful and concise modern screenplay. Because that’s exactly what The Tragedy of Macbeth is: a “modern” play. Whatever way you stage it or whatever historical period you set it in, its despotic tragic hero is easily recognizable in many political leaders past and present. So, the director should not try to “modernize” it but rather choose a context in which contemporary audiences can better grasp the twists and turns of the intrigue and the psychological complexities of the characters. One way to achieve this is to set a plot of epic proportion in a small and compact microcosm. In our case, we chose the world of motorcycle gangs. Surprisingly, bikers seem to be ruled by the same medieval systems of hierarchy and rank, with codes of conduct and honour. It is a patriarchal system of governance where members show respect and loyalty to their leaders. It is often populated by goodhearted people who have chosen a different and adventurous way of life. But some are also highly skilled when it comes to murdering, drug dealing,

arms trafficking as well as countless other illicit activities. And, of course, it is often a world of toxic masculinity where violent acts are normal rites of passage. In some gangs, patches are awarded to members as a badge of honour for having murdered on behalf of the club. In this kind of setting, a strong and ruthless character like Lady Macbeth would certainly want her man to prove his manliness. She actually manipulates him into murdering Duncan by challenging his masculinity: “When you durst do it, then you were a man; / And to be more than what you were, you would / Be so much more the man.” Later, Macbeth himself provokes the murderers he hires to kill Banquo by questioning their manhood, and when Macduff learns of the murders of his wife and children, Malcolm tells him to take the news in a “manly” fashion by seeking revenge. The challenge for an actor when playing these types of characters is not to condemn them but to try to understand their reality. At the start, Macbeth is a courageous soldier who is not inclined to commit evil deeds, yet he deeply desires advancement. Duncan apparently has the merit to not be a corrupt boss, attracting “golden opinions” from others, and is even referred to as a saint. Once Macbeth kills Duncan, his ambition to hold on to his position becomes intertwined with paranoia. Rather than being able to enjoy the fruits of his ambition, he becomes obsessed with maintaining the power he has won. I believe a tragedy about a powerful leader with unchecked ambition is all too timely and definitely a “modern” play.

2025: Creative director of Macbeth. Second season. Stratford: Coriolanus. Elsewhere: Steve has been working in the arts and cultural sector for over 25 years. Since 1996, he has been a creative director in communication firms. His media campaigns have received both national and international recognition. Blanchet began his collaboration with Ex Machina in 2005 during the creation of the large-scale outdoor video projection The Image Mill. He was the designer of its images until its final edition in 2013. He continued with Robert Lepageʼs one-man show, 887, and The Library at Night, an immersive exhibition exploring virtual reality. As creative director and co-designer, Blanchet has worked on an array of productions, including Frame by Frame with the National Ballet of Canada, The Magic Flute at the Quebec Opera Festival, Courville, The Riopelle Project, SLAM!, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, as well as the museum exhibition Lutte. He is designing the immersive reality experience for the Canada Pavilion of Osaka’s World Expo in 2025.

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to an electronic device for accessibility needs, please discuss with the House Manager prior to the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium. *Complimentary beverages served within the members lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGE

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who generously contribute financial gifts beyond their ticket purchases. For information on how to access our lounges, please visit stratfordfestival.ca/Membership.

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim or in the event we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take patron health and safety seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance for you if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Stratford Festival team member.
