SYNOPSIS

Adapted from the Canada Reads–winning memoir by Mark Sakamoto, Forgiveness tells the story of two people traumatized but not broken by the Second World War. Mitsue Sakamoto and her family are sent to a Japanese Canadian internment camp in the Canadian interior after the bombing of Pearl

Harbor. Ralph MacLean joins the Canadian army and endures years of privation in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp.

When the conflict ends, Mitsue and Ralph are forced to confront their long-buried anger and grief when Mitsue’s son and Ralph’s daughter fall in love. An emotional map across time, this story of love and family is a testament to the power of choosing forgiveness over hatred.

Mark Sakamoto has enjoyed a rich and varied career, having worked at a national law firm, a national broadcaster and served as a senior political advisor to a national party leader.

In 2014, Mark authored his first book, Forgiveness: A Gift from My Grandparents, which went on to be a #1 national best seller, winning CBC Canada Reads in 2018 and selling over 70,000 copies. Forgiveness was staged by Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre Company and Theatre Calgary in 2023. It is currently being developed as a feature film. Mark’s second book, Shizue’s Path, with award-winning illustrator Rachel Wada, was published by HarperCollins in 2023.

In 2020, Mark hosted and executive produced Good People, a five-part documentary that explores humanity’s biggest problems. Good People received critical success, garnering a “highly recommended” from John Doyle at The Globe and Mail and two Canadian Screen Award nominations.

In 2021, Mark hosted and executive produced Sugoi Tokyo, a 12-part series that explored the cultural and artistic beauty of Tokyo during the summer Olympics. Mark hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Tokyo Olympics with Scott Russell and Adrienne Arsenault.

Mark lives in Toronto and Prince Edward County with his wife and their two daughters.

ADAPTATION

BY HIRO

Hiro Kanagawa is a Vancouver-based writer and actor. His play Indian Arm received the 2017 Governor-General’s Literary Award for Drama. His other plays include The Tiger of Malaya and The Patron Saint of Stanley Park, both of which have been performed across Canada.

Forgiveness, an adaptation of Mark Sakamoto’s bestselling family memoir of the same name, premièred in 2023 in Vancouver and Calgary in an Arts Club Theatre/Theatre Calgary co-production directed by Stafford Arima. It received both a Betty Mitchell Award and Calgary Theatre Critics’ Award for Outstanding New Play and was a 2023 Governor-General’s Literary Award finalist.

For the screen, Hiro was story editor on the critically-acclaimed Canadian television series Da Vinci’s Inquest, Da Vinci’s City Hall, Intelligence, Blackstone and the upcoming feature film Dusk & Dawn. As an actor he is perhaps best-known for his numerous recurring and guest starring roles on popular television and streaming series such as Shōgun, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Star Trek: Discovery, Altered Carbon, The X-Files and many more.

A PATH FORwARd

DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY STAFFORD ARIMA

Forgiveness is a story that is as much about the past as it is about the present. A play based on the Canada Reads memoir of the same name holds a mirror up to the audience and makes an offer to them— that there is another way: to forgive. But let’s be clear: forgiveness (the noun) is not easy. Forgiveness is not passive. It is not a weakness. It is not forgetting. It can be an act of courage.

Forgiveness is an engaging play that asks questions—without forcing an answer— about culture, tradition, xenophobia and belonging. It is a play of resilience, injustice, and, most profoundly, grace. Our story is told through a landscape of memory, narrated by two protagonists, Mitsue Sakamoto and Ralph MacLean—who break the fourth wall in a very Brechtian way, open their scrapbook of history and offer a scattering of memoryfilled shrapnel.

The play begins with a quiet urgency. Mitsue and Ralph know that their story needs to be shared today. The need for them to remember, recite and relive their journeys takes the audience on a triptych of sorts where our protagonists relinquish chronology as a narrative convention and catapult us on an adventure of awakenings. In my goal to recreate the internal maze of Ralph and Mitsue’s memory, the designers and I explored a vocabulary where the abstract and the impressionistic meet the literal. Where space and time ebb and flow, and the invisible and visible find balance within the Tom Patterson Theatre.

To truly honour the audience’s intelligence is to create theatre that doesn’t limit the viewers to what they are looking at but releases the imagination to see what is invisible. As theatre artists, we have a rare and sacred task. We do not simply tell stories— we give breath to history. We make ghosts flesh. We make pain understood. I am reminded of Prospero’s line from The Tempest: “The rarer action is in virtue than in vengeance.” That’s what this play, and more specifically, the

Sakamoto and MacLean families, are asking of us—to explore not the path of resentment but the difficult, rarer path of virtue, of healing, of looking into the eyes of those who have wronged us and choosing— despite everything—to move forward.

This choice doesn’t mean forgetting. It doesn’t mean erasing the past. It means acknowledging the wound and making the decision to choose grace. Somewhere in our audience, there will be someone who has never known about the internment of Japanese Canadians. Someone who has never considered how their uncle or greatgrandparent fought overseas and what that experience did to them. Someone who has never thought about forgiveness beyond an abstract concept or platitude. Hopefully, they will leave the theatre changed, as the audiences did in both Theatre Calgary’s and the Arts Club’s productions in 2023. Not because we preached to them but because we made them feel. And when theatre artists do their job well, we might offer the world something it desperately needs right now—a path forward, not through vengeance, but through virtue.

MITSUE SAKAMOTO

After the war, Mitsue never lived in B.C. again. She lived in the same house in Medicine Hat for 67 years. In her modest kitchen, she fed many of the musicians her son Ron promoted, including The Guess Who, Murray MacLachlan, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Bruce Cockburn and many others. She passed away in 2014 at the age of 93.

RALPH M ac LEAN

Ralph settled in Calgary after the war and worked for Cominco for 40 years. A decorated war veteran, he received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. At the time of his death in March 2020, at the age of 98, he was one of the last surviving members of the Canadian soldiers who fought in Hong Kong. Though he ultimately lost his eyesight due to his war-time illnesses, he remained as vibrant and lucid as ever until the end.

STAN SAKAMOTO

An entrepreneur and lifelong community leader in Medicine Hat, Stan is a director of the Medicine Hat Rotary Club and currently sits on the board of the Monarch 1911 Society, the oldest operating movie theatre in Canada. His accolades include the Alberta Centennial Medal, 2010 Medicine Hat College Business Person of the Year and 2017 Medicine Hat Citizen of the Year for Community Service. Having raised seven children with his wife Susan, he continues to play old-timers’ hockey and is still nicknamed “Hackamoto.”

RON SAKAMOTO

A legend in the country music industry, Ron was instrumental in launching the careers of Johnny Reid, Keith Urban, Shania Twain and countless other stars. After Ron won the Canadian Country Music Association Promoter of the Year Award for 17 straight years, the award was named in his honour. A member of both the Canadian and Alberta Country Music Halls of Fame and the recipient of over 40 CMA, CCMA and Juno awards, Ron received the King Charles III Coronation Medal in February 2025.

DIANE M ac LEAN

Diane married Stan Sakamoto in 1973. Their sons Mark and Daniel were born in 1977 and 1980. After Diane and Stan divorced in 1985, Diane fell into alcoholism and substance abuse and spent the last years of her life in Medicine Hat’s Cecil Hotel. She passed away in 2001 at the age of 53.

CAMP COMMANDANT TETSUTARO KATO

Kato was sentenced to death for war crimes, but his influential family was able to have his sentence commuted. He was released for good behaviour in 1952. He went on to write the war crimes apologia I Want to Be a Shellfish. The novel has spawned three film adaptations, most notably by Shinobu Hashimoto, writer of the Kurosawa classics Rashomon, Ikiru and The Seven Samurai.

LUCY PEACOCK AND TOM MCCAMUS. PHOTOGRAPHY BY TED BELTON.

A FUSION OF TE X T, MUSIC A ND TH O UG H T

In this dynamic work of language, music and insight, commissioned by the Stratford Festival, you will be transported into the heart of The Divine Comedy and Dante Alighieri's descent into hell. You will be immersed in this creation by DLT, guided through the experience by Dr. Donato Santeramo of Queen’s University as you revel in the musicality of medieval Italian spoken by Florentine artist Daniele Bartolini, beautifully enhanced with original music by renowned composer Andrea Gozzi.

Please note: The spoken medieval Italian text will be surtitled in English.

TICKETS FROM $39 JUNE | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER
