A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO SEEKING HARMONY

What do I aim for when choosing a playbill?

I aim to celebrate life’s joys without shying away from life’s ills. In a theatre, we bear witness to intense experiences without risk to ourselves and we are made better for it. We may laugh, we may cry, but in either case we look to theatre to inspire and invigorate us, to make us more fully alive, more in harmony with our fellow human beings.

Conflict and passion are the stuff of theatre and in planning our 2025 season theme—Apollo, Venus & Mars: Reflections on Harmony, Love and War—I have been struck by how these seeming opposites are intimately linked.

Most conflict is driven not by random hatred but by some passionate vision of how things should be—a vision we feel impelled to defend against whatever we perceive, rightly or wrongly, as a threat. Thus brothers are pitted against brothers in As You Like It, friendship and love breed fatal jealousy in The Winter’s Tale and the child-deprived title character of Macbeth seeks to eliminate the lineages of his rivals.

To an orphan bereft of parental love, the world must seem a lonely battleground— but the spirits of unparented youth emerge

triumphant in our new dramatic adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and in the beloved musical Annie. In our other musical, the hilariously witty Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, con men try to prey on seemingly vulnerable female hearts, while in Sense and Sensibility, hearts are held hostage to economic insecurity. Meanwhile, in a self-declared “war” between the amoral aristocrats of Dangerous Liaisons, desire is weaponized to hurt and harm.

With its visceral description of the realities of combat, The Art of War brought me to tears when I first read it, while the new play Ransacking Troy delights us with its unexpectedly comic take on a mythical conflict. But the play that unites the threads that run through this season’s playbill is Forgiveness, a story about families finding their way beyond bitter wartime experiences to a place of resolution and healing.

To celebrate life’s joys in harmony with others. This Festival season, as always, I hope that will prove true for you.

SYNOPSIS

Money. Women. A gorgeous house by the sea. Lawrence Jameson—the most charming con man on the French Riviera—seemingly has it all until reports of a potential and mysterious rival, known only as “The Jackal,” begin to circulate. Lawrence soon finds himself face-to-face with American con man Freddy Benson.

Wanting Freddy off his turf, Lawrence wagers a bet with his new rival to see who can

swindle a naïve heiress, Christine Colgate, out of her fortune. The loser will be exiled, while the winner reaps the benefits of the Riviera’s access to the rich and gullible.

What ensues is a rollercoaster ride of unexpected twists and turns for both Lawrence and Freddy. Inspired by the 1988 hit film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the musical comedy earned 11 Tony Award nominations for its hilarious hijinks and frivolity— beautifully reminiscent of an earlier age.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY TRACEY FLYE

“We are such stuff as dreams are made on.”

The Tempest, Act 4, Scene 1

This is not just a quote from the Bard himself, but words by which our protagonist Lawrence Jameson lives, in a skewed manner, perhaps, but nevertheless as a path to follow. Lawrence says:

This is an arm’s length business, my friend. As the man said ‘We are the stuff that dreams are made on.’ Their dreams, not ours. What they want, not you. If you can have the patience and stay detached, which I highly doubt, you’ll get your castle in time. But make sure to build your walls high, because as soon as you let someone else in, the game is over.

“Arm’s length” and high walls describe exactly how Lawrence has chosen to live his life. A highly successful veteran con artist, he has made a career of capitalizing on the needs of wealthy women, fulfilling their dreams and, in return, being handsomely rewarded. His life has become predictable, easy, comfortable and his success has fostered an air of complacency. Enter con man Freddy Benson, an unpolished “gem” in every aspect, reeking with potential. What Lawrence lacks in his grift, Freddy has in abundance—excitement, a sense of danger, “the thrill of the rollercoaster, the lure of the swirling eddy.” And so begins an unlikely mentorship and the musical comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

When I read and listened to the piece, my first thought was, how do I, as a female, find my way into a world where it appears that men take such advantage of women?

My answer was and remains this: the musical takes place in a world of complicity where everyone is a willing participant in the grift. The obscenely wealthy women who frequent the French Riviera live in a constant state of ennui and, to fill the void of loneliness, are eager to part with their wealth, no matter how ridiculous the ruse may seem. Lawrence provides that ruse. The women decide if, when and how they will participate. The world that swirls around them knowingly

supports the ruse and is fundamental to its success. Even you, the audience, are complicit as observers to the story as it unfolds. Complicity is key.

Now, it may appear, and appearances can be deceiving, that this world could be a wholly distasteful place. But I beg to differ. It is, in total, a whirlwind of mayhem and confusion, of vulgarity versus sophistication, of discovery and choice, of longing and love and unexpected revelation. It’s really not much different from the one we live in. And while each character we meet appears to be masked, guarding who they truly are, in each of them there is an untapped humanity, a loneliness and longing for something else. This unrecognized heartbeat follows them throughout the musical and propels them forward to their own discoveries.

Who is right or wrong? Who is good or bad? Who wins and who loses? All these are questions for the ages and in a world where black and white bleed into gray, where the lines are constantly blurred and re-drawn, I leave it to you to decide the answers.

Jeffrey Lane was most recently represented on Broadway by his work with David Yazbek for the musical version of Pedro Almodóvar’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown . His work for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels earned him both Tony and Drama Desk nominations, as well as the Drama League Award for Best Musical. Perhaps best known for such television programs as Mad About You , Ryan’s Hope , Lou Grant , Cagney & Lacey , the AFI Life Achievement Awards, the Tony Awards, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd and the miniseries The Murder of Mary Phagan , he is the winner of five Emmy Awards, three Writers Guild Awards, two Peabodys, a Golden Globe and the Christopher Award, and the relatively good-natured loser of many more. According to IMDb, he also played Clarice’s father in the film The Silence of the Lambs . But he didn’t.

MUSIC AND LYRICS BY DAVID YAZBEK

A varied career as a recording artist, Emmy-winning TV and film writer, music producer and pianist has somehow led Yazbek to a career on Broadway. His four shows, The Full Monty , Dirty Rotten Scoundrels , Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and The Band’s Visit , were all Tony-nominated for Best Score. Yazbek took home the Tony for Best Score for The Band’s Visit The Full Monty won him the Drama Desk Award for Best Music. As a recording artist, Yazbek is responsible for five albums: The Laughing Man (winner NAIRD award, Best Pop Album of the Year), Tock, Damascus , Tape Recorder and Evil Monkey Man . He also produced the original cast albums of The Band’s Visit , The Full Monty , Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown , the first three of which were nominated for Grammy Awards. Yazbek scored the final season of HBO's Boardwalk Empire , scored and performed the music for Larry David’s giant Broadway hit Fish in the Dark , and built an Ikea storage shelf. Yazbek teamed up with 13 librettist Robert Horn to collaborate on the musical Tootsie , which won the Tony for Best Book of a Musical and was nominated for a total of 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

A SPONTANEOUS THEATRE CREATION BY REBECCA NORTHAN AND BRUCE HORAK WITH ELLIS LALONDE

OCT 17–NOV 1

BUY TICKETS FROM $55

Following their highly acclaimed unconventional performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth in 2023, the goblins will be making a triumphant return to the Meighen Forum in 2025. Taking on another roller-coaster theatrical classic, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, audiences can anticipate glorious drama with unearthly charm as the goblins are determined to delve deeper into the timeless story to o er up a cautionary tale of patricide, incest and eye-gouging comedy.

Recommended for audiences 18 years and older.

OUR TEAM

Each season at the Stratford Festival is a miracle. We start each year with “two planks and a passion,” and within months, the phenomenal workers on stage and behind the scenes work together to deliver magical experiences for our audiences.

FOR ASSISTANCE AND ACCESSIBILITY

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to an electronic device for accessibility needs, please discuss with the House Manager prior to the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium.

*Complimentary beverages served within the members lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGE

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who generously contribute financial gifts beyond their ticket purchases. For information on how to access our lounges, please visit stratfordfestival.ca/Membership.

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim or in the event we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take patron health and safety seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance for you if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Stratford Festival team member.
