A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO

SEEKING HARMONY

What do I aim for when choosing a playbill?

I aim to celebrate life’s joys without shying away from life’s ills. In a theatre, we bear witness to intense experiences without risk to ourselves and we are made better for it. We may laugh, we may cry, but in either case we look to theatre to inspire and invigorate us, to make us more fully alive, more in harmony with our fellow human beings.

Conflict and passion are the stuff of theatre and in planning our 2025 season theme—Apollo, Venus & Mars: Reflections on Harmony, Love and War—I have been struck by how these seeming opposites are intimately linked.

Most conflict is driven not by random hatred but by some passionate vision of how things should be—a vision we feel impelled to defend against whatever we perceive, rightly or wrongly, as a threat. Thus brothers are pitted against brothers in As You Like It, friendship and love breed fatal jealousy in The Winter’s Tale and the child-deprived title character of Macbeth seeks to eliminate the lineages of his rivals.

To an orphan bereft of parental love, the world must seem a lonely battleground— but the spirits of unparented youth emerge

triumphant in our new dramatic adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and in the beloved musical Annie. In our other musical, the hilariously witty Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, con men try to prey on seemingly vulnerable female hearts, while in Sense and Sensibility, hearts are held hostage to economic insecurity. Meanwhile, in a self-declared “war” between the amoral aristocrats of Dangerous Liaisons, desire is weaponized to hurt and harm.

With its visceral description of the realities of combat, The Art of War brought me to tears when I first read it, while the new play Ransacking Troy delights us with its unexpectedly comic take on a mythical conflict. But the play that unites the threads that run through this season’s playbill is Forgiveness, a story about families finding their way beyond bitter wartime experiences to a place of resolution and healing.

To celebrate life’s joys in harmony with others. This Festival season, as always, I hope that will prove true for you.

SYNOPSIS

In decadent 18th-century France, aristocrats and former lovers, La Marquise de Merteuil and Le Vicomte de Valmont, scheme and conspire in sexual exploits involving members of the nobility. Motivated by revenge, Merteuil enlists Valmont to debauch the convent-bred Cécile Volanges, betrothed to Merteuil’s exlover, Le Comte de Gercourt.

Initially, Valmont refuses, as he intends to seduce Madame de Tourvel, a woman renowned for her virtue, religious devotion

and marital happiness. Merteuil promises Valmont a desirable reward if he secures a letter confirming his triumph over Tourvel.

Later, seeking revenge against Cécile’s mother, Madame de Volanges, Valmont carries out Merteuil’s original plan. Meanwhile, Merteuil assumes the role of adviser to Madame de Volanges and mediator between lovers, Cécile and her music teacher, Le Chevalier Danceny.

Driven by Merteuil’s promised reward and the thrill of conquest, Valmont wins over Madame de Tourvel. However, unexpected emotions develop among the characters, leading to tragic consequences.

BY CHRISTOPHER HAMPTON

Christopher Hampton became involved in theatre while studying French and German at Oxford University and wrote a play in his first year.

The Royal Court’s subsequent production was so successful that it transferred to the Comedy Theatre while he was still a student, making him the youngest writer ever to have a play performed in the West End—a record which still stands.

His plays, musicals and translations have garnered four Tony Awards, three Olivier Awards, five Evening Standard Awards and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award; prizes for his screen work include two Oscars, two BAFTAs, a Writers’ Guild of America Award, the Prix Italia, a Special Jury Award at the Cannes Film Festival, Hollywood Screenwriter of the Year and The Collateral Award at the Venice Film Festival for Best Literary Adaptation.

His works for the stage include original plays (A German Life, Visit From An Unknown Woman, Appomattox, The Talking Cure, White Chameleon, Tales from Hollywood, Treats, Savages, The Philanthropist, Total Eclipse and When Did You Last See My Mother?); plays adapted from novels (Ödön von Horváth’s Youth Without God, Sándor Márai’s Embers, Laclos’ Les Liaisons Dangereuses); musicals (Sunset Boulevard, Dracula: The Musical and Stephen Ward, all with Don Black); libretti (Waiting for the Barbarians, Appomattox and The Trial, all with composer Philip Glass).

DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY ESTHER JUN

Les Liaisons Dangereuses is a razor blade wrapped in silk. A tantalizing truffle of seduction, power, betrayal and revenge, but beneath its gilded wrapper lies a brutal exploration of deception, power, ego and the cost of pleasure pursued without conscience.

Adapted from the 18th-century epistolary novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, playwright Christopher Hampton dissects the elegant masks worn by the French aristocracy—masks that hide manipulation, emotional warfare and a growing fear of their own obsolescence. These devices of “social survival” in 18th-century France are just as present in our 21st-century society. This story pulses with modern resonance, reminding us we still commodify desire, we still reward cunning over sincerity, and we still confuse vulnerability with weakness.

At its heart are the Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil, former lovers turned co-conspirators in a ruthless game of their own appetites. Their weapons are wit, sex and propriety. Their battleground is the human heart. What is so intoxicating to us as an audience is their power. They control other people and their lives so succinctly and seemingly effortlessly. In this game, everyone is collateral damage, and we watch with fascination as lives are shattered, all whilst dressed in dazzling, covetous costumes. Sex and love are currency. Etiquette and wealth are armour. Their fellow aristocrats have no idea that this dynamic duo is playing a game with rules they have concocted themselves, and this makes them doubly dangerous. Intoxicated with power and consumed by the desire to win, they are blinded to the self-destructive nature of the game. They are playing in a construct where few people, especially a woman playing like a man, can find freedom. They never ask, “Where does a life of cruelty lead? What is the cost of a life lived for the pleasure of conquest?”

Despite all the machinations and wanton callousness, Les Liaisons Dangereuses ultimately is about love and the conscious effort

to CHOOSE love. These characters— clever, calculating and breathtakingly vicious—remind us how easily love can be twisted when it becomes a tool of power rather than a source of connection. Valmont learns what love is from Madame de Tourvel, who eventually chooses to love him and does so with her entire being. In the end, they are both destroyed by Merteuil, someone terrified of love because of what control she may lose. Unfortunately for Valmont, he chooses between “vanity and happiness” too late, and love does not triumph. Power does.

We’ve leaned into the tension between surface beauty and inner decay in this production. The world is decadent, yes— but also fragile, teetering on the edge of collapse. As the revolution looms just beyond the gilded mirrors, we feel the chill of accountability creeping in. May this story linger with you, not just as a cautionary tale of moral decay, but as a mirror held up to the games we all play to feel we have some control over our own lives.

FOR ASSISTANCE AND ACCESSIBILITY

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to an electronic device for accessibility needs, please discuss with the House Manager prior to the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium.

*Complimentary beverages served within the members lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGE

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who generously contribute financial gifts beyond their ticket purchases. For information on how to access our lounges, please visit stratfordfestival.ca/Membership.

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim or in the event we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take patron health and safety seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance for you if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Stratford Festival team member.
