A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO

SEEKING HARMONY

What do I aim for when choosing a playbill?

I aim to celebrate life’s joys without shying away from life’s ills. In a theatre, we bear witness to intense experiences without risk to ourselves and we are made better for it. We may laugh, we may cry, but in either case we look to theatre to inspire and invigorate us, to make us more fully alive, more in harmony with our fellow human beings.

Conflict and passion are the stuff of theatre and in planning our 2025 season theme—Apollo, Venus & Mars: Reflections on Harmony, Love and War—I have been struck by how these seeming opposites are intimately linked.

Most conflict is driven not by random hatred but by some passionate vision of how things should be—a vision we feel impelled to defend against whatever we perceive, rightly or wrongly, as a threat. Thus brothers are pitted against brothers in As You Like It, friendship and love breed fatal jealousy in The Winter’s Tale and the child-deprived title character of Macbeth seeks to eliminate the lineages of his rivals.

To an orphan bereft of parental love, the world must seem a lonely battleground— but the spirits of unparented youth emerge

triumphant in our new dramatic adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and in the beloved musical Annie. In our other musical, the hilariously witty Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, con men try to prey on seemingly vulnerable female hearts, while in Sense and Sensibility, hearts are held hostage to economic insecurity. Meanwhile, in a self-declared “war” between the amoral aristocrats of Dangerous Liaisons, desire is weaponized to hurt and harm.

With its visceral description of the realities of combat, The Art of War brought me to tears when I first read it, while the new play Ransacking Troy delights us with its unexpectedly comic take on a mythical conflict. But the play that unites the threads that run through this season’s playbill is Forgiveness, a story about families finding their way beyond bitter wartime experiences to a place of resolution and healing.

To celebrate life’s joys in harmony with others. This Festival season, as always, I hope that will prove true for you.

SYNOPSIS

Annie is an optimistic, redheaded orphan determined to find her happily ever after—a family. In pursuit of this dream, she escapes her orphanage and, on the streets of New York City, encounters a stray dog which she names Sandy. Unfortunately, Annie is soon captured by a police officer, forcing Sandy to flee. The officer takes Annie back to the orphanage, where the dreadful caretaker, Miss Aggie Hannigan, waits.

Not long after, Grace Farrell, the kind secretary of billionaire Oliver Warbucks, arrives and chooses Annie to bring along to the holiday festivities happening at the mansion. Once the pair learns of Annie’s lifelong search for her birth parents, they begin to help the young girl in her quest, leading to a series of exciting—and rocky— adventures. In a heartwarming conclusion, Warbucks declares his intent to adopt the lovable Annie, culminating in a joyful reunion with her scrappy dog, Sandy.

THE ANNIE EFFECT

DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY DONNA FEORE

Annie is an orphan. By herself in the world, she faces a very real struggle for survival.

A child alone lacks protection and guidance unless someone steps in to care for them. Maybe that act involves love or just simple decency, but that support makes all the difference.

Where we came from and where we want to go define who and what we aspire to be—our vision shapes us. Annie has only her “imagined” parents and past to shape her vision, yet her choices always assume wonderful prospects. She embodies the best of every human reaction to adversity and she speaks to us in a language so simple and clear that it’s hard to deny her power.

So, why Annie and why now?

Today, we face many of the same issues that plagued the world during the Depression Era depicted in the play. We share the huge disparity between rich and poor and the daily insecurity and unpredictability that almost everyone deals with. This gives us an insight into Annie’s world and, perhaps, shines a guiding light in our own.

Annie has always been a fabulous show. Now, its relevance and resonance appeal to me in a visceral way. That may be due to the fact that it’s filled with children and dogs—I love them both. Also, its message of optimism and mutual support is something that moves me. Annie’s journey is filled

with many, many challenges but her response to those challenges is to stand up, speak up and carry on.

I want to be Annie when I grow up!

The Festival Theatre’s thrust stage offers its own unique opportunities for the entire creative team and we respond by looking at every show with fresh eyes. We spend months before rehearsals trying to imagine what will best serve each particular story. Our extraordinary team has worked tirelessly to discover what will inspire us, our cast and finally you, our audience. For this production of Annie , I was given the freedom to reimagine the dance elements in the show and immediately began work on new dance arrangements and orchestrations with the brilliant David Dabbon.

I am very excited to share our discoveries with you. We have always benefited from an amazing orchestra, wonderfully skilled artists and artisans who can elevate performances to remarkable levels. We are committed to showcasing all they have to offer. If you’ve seen productions of Annie before, on stage or on film, you will still be surprised by ours!

I am particularly proud of our engagement with a wonderful group of young performers who are bright, witty, wildly talented and a whole lot of fun to work with. They are the future. This production has been developed with an eye on this very moment in time—today is our inspiration. Annie invites us to see the world through the eyes of an innocent. It challenges us to build a better, more supportive place for everyone, humans and dogs alike!

I hope you will delight in Annie as much as we have.

A FUSION OF TE X T, MUSIC A ND TH O UG H T

In this dynamic work of language, music and insight, commissioned by the Stratford Festival, you will be transported into the heart of The Divine Comedy and Dante Alighieri's descent into hell. You will be immersed in this creation by DLT, guided through the experience by Dr. Donato Santeramo of Queen’s University as you revel in the musicality of medieval Italian spoken by Florentine artist Daniele Bartolini, beautifully enhanced with original music by renowned composer Andrea Gozzi. BUY TICKETS FROM $39 JUNE | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER

OUR TEAM

Each season at the Stratford Festival is a miracle. We start each year with “two planks and a passion,” and within months, the phenomenal workers on stage and behind the scenes work together to deliver magical experiences for our audiences.

Please note: The spoken medieval Italian text will be surtitled in English. FOR A FULL STAFF LIST SCAN HERE
