What do I aim for when choosing a playbill?
I aim to celebrate life’s joys without shying away from life’s ills. In a theatre, we bear witness to intense experiences without risk to ourselves and we are made better for it. We may laugh, we may cry, but in either case we look to theatre to inspire and invigorate us, to make us more fully alive, more in harmony with our fellow human beings.
Conflict and passion are the stuff of theatre and in planning our 2025 season theme—Apollo, Venus & Mars: Reflections on Harmony, Love and War—I have been struck by how these seeming opposites are intimately linked.
Most conflict is driven not by random hatred but by some passionate vision of how things should be—a vision we feel impelled to defend against whatever we perceive, rightly or wrongly, as a threat. Thus brothers are pitted against brothers in As You Like It, friendship and love breed fatal jealousy in The Winter’s Tale and the child-deprived title character of Macbeth seeks to eliminate the lineages of his rivals.
To an orphan bereft of parental love, the world must seem a lonely battleground— but the spirits of unparented youth emerge
triumphant in our new dramatic adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and in the beloved musical Annie. In our other musical, the hilariously witty Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, con men try to prey on seemingly vulnerable female hearts, while in Sense and Sensibility, hearts are held hostage to economic insecurity. Meanwhile, in a self-declared “war” between the amoral aristocrats of Dangerous Liaisons, desire is weaponized to hurt and harm.
With its visceral description of the realities of combat, The Art of War brought me to tears when I first read it, while the new play Ransacking Troy delights us with its unexpectedly comic take on a mythical conflict. But the play that unites the threads that run through this season’s playbill is Forgiveness, a story about families finding their way beyond bitter wartime experiences to a place of resolution and healing.
To celebrate life’s joys in harmony with others. This Festival season, as always, I hope that will prove true for you.

Generations of readers have fallen in love with Lucy Maud Montgomery’s timeless tale of imagination, resilience and the transformative power of love. In this playful retelling of the literary classic, freckle-faced orphan Anne Shirley arrives in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, with little more than
the clothes on her back. Soon, her vivid imagination, fiery temper and tenacious spirit win over her adoptive parents, Matthew and Marilla, as well as local residents and her schoolmates, including her arch-nemesis, Gilbert Blythe and her kindred spirit, Diana Barry. In this exuberant take on the beloved classic novel, audiences meet Anne, illuminated by her signature charm and irrepressible glory—minus the show tunes!
DIRECTOR’S
NOTES
BY KAT SANDLER
“Everything you can imagine is real.”
—Pablo Picasso
“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”
—Albert Einstein
“It’s delightful when your imaginations come true, isn’t it?”
—Anne Shirley
“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
—Also Anne Shirley
In 1905, L.M. Montgomery imagined Anne of Green Gables (AGG) into being. Inspired by her P.E.I. upbringing, she created Anne Shirley, a spirited, red-headed orphan whose arrival in Avonlea transforms its inhabitants through her imagination, resilience and love.
Since then, AGG has captivated readers worldwide, including Sarah Polley, Margaret Atwood, Aretha Franklin, former Japanese Empress Michiko and Mark Twain, who called Anne “the dearest and most lovable child in fiction since the immortal Alice.”
I first met Anne through a VHS tape of Kevin Sullivan’s 1985 miniseries starring Megan Follows. I was smitten. I had never seen a wildly overactive imagination (like mine) depicted as something so beautiful. Anne quickly became a symbol to me—as she has for so many others—of individuality, creativity and facing adversity with a dream and a smile.
I played that tape to dust, rewinding endlessly to laugh at Diana’s accidental intoxication, swoon over Gilbert and heave-sob—well, frequently. Later, when I finally read the book, I discovered that those moments, jokes and characters had the same magic on the page and even more power to move, delight and thrill me as I got older.
Collaborating with L.M. Montgomery’s text to
bring Anne’s story to a new generation of theatregoers is a great honour. Still, it is daunting to adapt a novel that has inspired countless beloved adaptations, including the cherished 1965 musical and CBC’s Anne with an E
Every Anne fan has met her in their own way, in their own time, making her feel like she belongs to each of us, frozen in the moment we first imagined her. I wanted to honour this by putting the fans onstage— our chorus of narrators includes modern readers who love this story, alongside newcomers discovering it for the first time.
At its heart, this production is about the power of imagination. As a young theatregoer, I was always in awe of the simplest bits of theatre magic. Being asked to use my imagination made me feel like part of the story, as if I were necessary to the telling of it. That feeling eventually led me to a career in storytelling.
Our adaptation celebrates AGG’s rich legacy while bringing something new: a fusion of ancient Greek drama, vaudevillian comedy (did you know the Avon was once a vaudeville house?), irreverent metafiction and swoony rom-coms. For us, this true Canadian epic is a timeless tale that celebrates our differences and revels in chosen family, belonging, the quest for women’s rights and the power of education.
With everything happening in the world, it has meant so much to us to spend time in a story that is all about love. Anne reminds us that if we can dream it, it can become reality. She shows us the power in our differences, the beauty in our surroundings and the joy of returning to a beloved story again and again. She reminds us to be grateful for Octobers.
Thank you to the artists, dreamers and everyone at Stratford and beyond, who helped imagine this story to life. And to you, our audience—the young and the young at heart—we hope you have as much fun in our Avonlea as we did bringing it to life. And if you don’t know Anne yet, we hope you love her as much as we do.
KAT SANDLER Playwright and Director
Lucy Maud (L.M.) Montgomery was born on November 30, 1874, in Clifton (now New London), Prince Edward Island. Montgomery’s debut novel, Anne of Green Gables (1908), became a bestseller and its enduring popularity has led to an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide. Anne of Green Gables has been translated into more than 30 languages, including braille, and has been adapted numerous times across various mediums. Meanwhile, Anne Shirley, the protagonist of Montgomery’s novel, has transformed into an iconic symbol of Canadian culture.
Montgomery authored two poetry collections, over 500 short stories and 20 novels. In 1923, she became the first Canadian woman to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Letters. In 1935, she was honoured as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire and elected to the Literary and Artistic Institute of France. L.M. Montgomery has undoubtedly become one of Canada’s most widely read authors.
Many years ago, a young Kat Sandler visited the Festival’s Theatre Store and purchased a postcard featuring the Festival’s empty thrust stage. She took it home, pinned it to her wall and meticulously labelled it with the names of the epic roles she dreamed of playing one day. Yes, she was very cool.
After school, Kat quickly discovered that being an actor required a level of skill and patience she didn’t possess and co-founded Theatre Brouhaha in Toronto with her friend Tom McGee and a group of brilliant young artists. Their mission was to create fast-paced, funny, accessible work that challenged audiences while prioritizing entertainment. They rehearsed often in the terrifying basement of a mob-run bar.
Over the next several years, Kat wrote and directed 10 original plays for Theatre Brouhaha (including Punch Up, Delicacy, and Bright Lights), staged at festivals, storefronts and frankly, any available venue. As a writer, director and producer, she was free to develop ideas from inception to production, having the most fun possible while honing her collaborative writers’ room process. Her play Mustard (Tarragon) won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play in 2016. Since then, Kat’s plays have been produced across Canada and internationally. She has directed her work on prominent stages, including the concurrent double bill of political farces The Party & The Candidate (Citadel in Edmonton, co-directed with Daryl Cloran) and WILDWOMAN (Soulpepper), and co-created and directed Big Stuff (Crow’s). She is also a screenwriter with multiple feature films and television series in development, including adapting her hit play Yaga for Bell Media/Crave.
Kat dreamed of being at Stratford and is thrilled to debut here with the Schulich Children’s Play in the same place that helped inspire her love of theatre and storytelling as a child. She is doubly thrilled to be able to write and direct Anne of Green Gables, a story she has loved for so long, with a script and production built upon everything she has learned (and everyone she has learned from) as she continues to grow up in the world of theatre.
As a Disney Imagineer said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” He was talking about a theme park ride, but the sentiment stands. For Kat, theatre—and now the Stratford Festival—is a wild and wondrous ride. Her message to all the dreamers out there: dream BIG.

These productions have been generously supported since 2012 by The Schulich Foundation through Schulich Children’s Plays. The Foundation’s commitment to programming for kids and their families has made a true difference. As one patron told us:
“You won’t find a happier customer! We loved it! As a matter of fact, we came home that night and rebooked it for October! My 5-year-old grandson can’t wait to see it again! He was amazed.”
Over the years, more than 172,000 children have had the chance to share these magical theatrical experiences with their parents and grandparents. This season will be no different as families come to Stratford to enjoy the timeless story of Anne of Green Gables.
Our deepest thanks to The Schulich Foundation from the Festival and more than 550,000 parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and children. We are grateful.
In this dynamic work of language, music and insight, commissioned by the Stratford Festival, you will be transported into the heart of The Divine Comedy and Dante Alighieri's descent into hell. You will be immersed in this creation by DLT, guided through the experience by Dr. Donato Santeramo of Queen’s University as you revel in the musicality of medieval Italian spoken by Florentine artist Daniele Bartolini, beautifully enhanced with original music by renowned composer Andrea Gozzi. BUY TICKETS FROM $39 JUNE | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER
Each season at the Stratford Festival is a miracle. We start each year with “two planks and a passion,” and within months, the phenomenal workers on stage and behind the scenes work together to deliver magical experiences for our audiences.
Please note: The spoken medieval Italian text will be surtitled in English. FOR A FULL STAFF LIST SCAN HERE

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.
For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to an electronic device for accessibility needs, please discuss with the House Manager prior to the performance.
We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium.
*Complimentary beverages served within the members lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.
We offer three complimentary lounges for those who generously contribute financial gifts beyond their ticket purchases. For information on how to access our lounges, please visit stratfordfestival.ca/Membership.
If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim or in the event we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.
We take patron health and safety seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance for you if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.
In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Stratford Festival team member.
