3 — OCTOBER 24

Welcome to the Stratford Festival. It is a great privilege to gather and share stories on this beautiful territory, which has been the site of human activity—and therefore storytelling—for many thousands of years. We wish to honour the ancestral guardians of this land and its waterways: the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Wendat and the Attiwonderonk. Today many Indigenous peoples continue to call this land home and act as its stewards; this responsibility extends to all peoples, to share and care for this land for generations to come.
What do I aim for when choosing a playbill?
I aim to celebrate life’s joys without shying away from life’s ills. In a theatre, we bear witness to intense experiences without risk to ourselves and we are made better for it. We may laugh, we may cry, but in either case we look to theatre to inspire and invigorate us, to make us more fully alive, more in harmony with our fellow human beings.
Conflict and passion are the stuff of theatre and in planning our 2025 season theme— Apollo, Venus & Mars: Reflections on Harmony, Love and War—I have been struck by how these seeming opposites are intimately linked.
Most conflict is driven not by random hatred but by some passionate vision of how things should be—a vision we feel impelled to defend against whatever we perceive, rightly or wrongly, as a threat. Thus brothers are pitted against brothers in As You Like It, friendship and love breed fatal jealousy in The Winter’s Tale and the child-deprived title character of Macbeth seeks to eliminate the lineages of his rivals.
To an orphan bereft of parental love, the world must seem a lonely battleground—but the spirits of unparented youth emerge triumphant in our new dramatic adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and in the beloved musical Annie. In our other musical, the hilariously witty Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, con men try to prey on seemingly vulnerable female hearts, while in Sense and Sensibility, hearts are held hostage to economic insecurity. Meanwhile, in a self-declared “war” between the amoral aristocrats of Dangerous Liaisons, desire is weaponized to hurt and harm.
With its visceral description of the realities of combat, The Art of War brought me to tears when I first read it, while the new play Ransacking Troy delights us with its unexpectedly comic take on a mythical conflict. But the play that unites the threads that run through this season’s playbill is Forgiveness, a story about families finding their way beyond bitter wartime experiences to a place of resolution and healing.
To celebrate life’s joys in harmony with others. This Festival season, as always, I hope that will prove true for you.
ANTONI CIMOLINO ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
2025 SEASON APOLLO, VENUS & MARS: REFLECTIONS ON HARMONY, LOVE AND WAR
The theme of our 2025 season invokes three Roman deities: Mars, the god of war; Venus, the goddess of love; and Apollo, the god of music, healing and harmony. All are rich in dramatic potential but, speaking for myself, I tend to lean into love. As the old Skeeter Davis song put it, “I’m a lover, not a fighter.”
When it comes to the Stratford Festival, here are some things I love:
ONE: Artists pushing themselves to new heights of achievement.
TWO: Newcomers encountering the Festival and its community for the first time. THREE: Surprising long-time patrons with new works and classics, overlooked until now. FOUR: Seeing connections forged between multi-generational audiences. FIVE: Witnessing the worldviews of young people being expanded by the work on our stages. SIX: Watching the swans cruise along the Avon River.
SEVEN: Downtown streets bustling with visitors and residents. EIGHT: Sunny summer days on downtown patios and crisp fall days at local farmers’ markets. NINE: Lively conversations around dining tables about the productions and the issues that emerge from them. TEN: Gaining new insights into the plays and their contexts at the Meighen Forum. ELEVEN: Our Festival team—more than 1,000 artists, staff and crew—working in harmony (mostly!) to create and support the work on our stages.
I believe our world needs the Stratford Festival now more than ever. We are a safe harbour, a place for ideas, a place committed to excellence in all things—a place that celebrates the human spirit and where all are welcome.
The pleasures of Stratford aren’t limited to our theatres. Our community punches far above its weight when it comes to restaurants, accommodation, shopping—all the amenities that make for an unforgettable visit. Both on stage and off, experiences await you here that just might change your life—because you never know when you’re going to encounter that magical moment that captures your heart forever.
If harmony is to be found anywhere these days, I’d say it’s right here in my hometown. So don’t fight it any longer: I invite you to heed the call of Venus and fall in love with Stratford in 2025!

BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
The Forest of Arden, reimagined in this production, sees its pastoral calm upended by the arrival of a motley cast of courtiers, fools, dukes and ladies exiled from the pitiless world of court politics and dynastic succession. The latest arrivals: Orlando, banished by his cruel older brother after their father’s death, and Rosalind who, in her attempt to flee an equally cruel uncle, arrives on the scene disguised as a boy. When Orlando and Rosalind fall for one another, the question then becomes, can Orlando recognize the object of his affection through her cunning disguise and Arden’s shaded vales? Beloved for its wit and banter, As You Like It promises classic Shakespearean comedy befitting of modern audiences.

BASED ON LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE® BY PERMISSION OF TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY, LLC
Annie has reigned as one of the world’s most beloved family musicals since its original six-year Broadway run. Annie Bennett is the iconic mop-topped orphan who knows the sun will come out tomorrow for her, no matter how dark it gets today. (Even if “today” is under the domain of Miss Hannigan, the caretaker of the orphanage and an over-the-top misopedist.) When Annie and her scrappy dog, Sandy, are taken in by the secretary of the billionaire Daddy Warbucks, the girl's lifelong search to find her birth parents sets off a chain of wacky, heartwarming adventures.

BY KATE HAMILL BASED ON THE NOVEL BY JANE AUSTEN
Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel follows the travails of the Dashwood sisters—sensible, subdued Elinor and the passionately emotional Marianne— after their father’s passing leaves their family dependent on the whims of wealthy relations. When suitors, both suitable and otherwise, start courting the Dashwood girls, the sisters must blend sense with sensibility to protect their hearts and their reputations. Bristling with wit, cutting social commentary and old-fashioned romance brimming with longing and tender affection, Sense and Sensibility is pure Regency Period delight.

The victim of their subterfuge is a beautiful young woman, Madame de Tourvel, whose virtue and piety will put the players to shame. A scandalously clever period drama, the play delivers a nasty bite, guaranteed to sting the conscience of its audiences.

What alignment of stars guides the anti-hero Macbeth’s bloody hand? This bold reimagining of Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy by visionary director Robert Lepage sets the uncanny action during the Quebec Biker War of the 1990s.

ADAPTED FROM THE BOOK FORGIVENESS: A GIFT FROM MY GRANDPARENTS BY MARK SAKAMOTO
Adapted from the Canada Reads-winning memoir by Mark Sakamoto, Forgiveness tells the story of two people traumatized but not broken by the Second World War. Mitsue Sakamoto and her family are sent to a civilian internment camp in the Canadian interior after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Ralph MacLean joins the Canadian army and endures years of privation in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. When the conflict ends, Mitsue and Ralph are forced to confront their longburied anger and grief when Mitsue’s son and Ralph’s daughter fall in love. An emotional map across time, this story of love and family is a testament to the power of choosing forgiveness over hatred.

Everyone knows the story of the Trojan War: Trojan boy elopes with married Greek girl; angry husband tracks the lovers to the boy’s hometown; 10 years of siege warfare later, the angry husband and his posse reduce Troy to rubble. But did it have to end that way? In Ransacking Troy, playwright Erin Shields imagines a less testosterone-fuelled conclusion, in which the women of Greece—tired of waiting for their husbands to return from war—stage an intervention of historical proportions.

This co-creation of text, music and thought, curated by Florentine artist Daniele Bartolini and Dr. Donato Santeramo, seamlessly integrates elements of a hybrid concert and dramatized lecture. Renowned musician Andrea Gozzi contributes suggestive music to enhance the overall auditory experience, simultaneously delving into the intricacies of one of the preeminent poems in Western literature, Dante’s Divina Commedia.
Central to the performance is Dante Alighieri—the “Everyman”—a Middle-Ages middle-aged Florentine, and his descent into hell.
Spectators will be immersed into the performance, unlocking the meaning of each canto through Santeramo’s lectures while revelling in the musicality of Medieval Italian spoken by Bartolini, enhanced by Gozzi’s carefully crafted soundtrack. The event promises to deliver audiences into the very heart of Dante’s insightful journey. (Note: There will be English surtitles.)

The benefits of arts education have been well proven. To support the ample evidence of its benefits at a time when equitable access to meaningful arts education is diminishing, the Festival is excited to introduce Education Week. Offering workshops, speaker events, tours and performances focused on the perspectives of young people and advocates invested in their education—teachers, parents, policymakers—this week's festivities will highlight the importance of arts education through celebration and learning.

Audio-described (AD) performances are designed for guests who are Blind or have low vision. Live audio description gives details of costumes, sets and on-stage action without interfering with spoken dialogue. House managers can also provide magnifying sheets.
Braille house programs are available following the preview period. Please ask House Manager for assistance. Additional braille materials can also be made available on request.
Online versions of all our materials are also made available on the StratfestOnsite app and website.
Our theatres offer wireless radio-frequency hearing-assistance receivers (HARs), compatible with t-coil hearing aids and cochlear implants. For optimal performance, guests are encouraged to bring their own wired headphones, however, headphones are available for loan. Please reserve a hearing-assistance receiver when booking your ticket.
American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be available on selected dates.
Open captioned performances (OC) display the dialogue and sound effects of the play as text on a screen in front of a reserved section of seating. The actors’ spoken lines will be synchronized with the captions. For the best view of the stage and screen, specific seats have been reserved.
Relaxed performances (RPs) aim to meet the needs of autistic and neurodiverse people while also being suitable for families or first-time theatregoers.
RPs foster a casual approach to the traditional theatre experience; audience members are welcome to move around freely or make noise. RP modifies lighting and sound and aims to ensure everyone feels welcome and safe.
The season’s relaxed performances are generously supported by the S.M. Blair Foundation.
Accessible seating is available for wheelchair users, while mobility seating is generally fixed, but accessible without any steps. Canes can be brought to your seat, while larger devices (i.e., walkers) are stored outside the auditorium. Our theatres are equipped with handrails; however, please note the Studio Theatre and Tom Patterson Theatre auditoriums and Avon Theare balcony are steeply inclined.
Theatres feature accessible washrooms, motorized doors and elevators.
Pre-paid accessible parking is available with an accessible parking permit at the Festival and Tom Patterson theatres. Please reserve your space when booking your ticket. Avon and Studio theatres do not have designated private lots; municipal lots and street parking are available throughout downtown Stratford but cannot be reserved in advance. Municipal parking is free of charge in all metred spaces (designated or not) for individuals with accessible parking permits.
We welcome support persons who provide assistance with daily activities. Support persons must have their own tickets. Complimentary admission for one support person will be granted with a CNIB card or Access 2 card. Other complimentary admissions for support persons will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please call the box office before the performance. Service animals are always welcome.
After July 1, additional open-captioned, audio-described, as well as ASL-interpreted performance dates may be available to groups of 20 or larger. Please contact groups@stratfordfestival.ca for more information. For more information: visit stratfordfestival.ca/Accessibility, or email accessibility@stratfordfestival.ca
