The Blowing Rock WinterFest sign.

By Moss Brennan WinterFest is in its 26th year and is better than ever as more events welcome community members to downtown Blowing Rock. “WinterFest is something we all look forward to during the cold days in January here in Blowing Rock! It is such a unique opportunity to be a part of this event in this amazing and beautiful town in the mountains,” said event coordinator John Goheen. “It really is an experience that can not be replicated in other places. With the whole town coming together to celebrate winter, you can’t help but fall in love with the charm of this wonderful community. As we like to say, ‘Don’t hibernate, celebrate!’” Back in 1997, a group of businesses led by Jimmy Crippen, owner of Crippen’s Restaurant and Country Inn, came together to see if they could do something

about the lack of business activity in the dead of winter. Realtors, restaurateurs, hoteliers, and retailers all worked to create a festival the last week of January that would celebrate winter, encourage locals to come out of hibernation, and stimulate the economy, all while providing opportunities for area nonprofits to benefit from the events. That idea has become one of the biggest events in Blowing Rock each year, bringing thousands of people to town. The volunteers became tired over the years of all the hard work that the event became. In 2005, the event was transferred to the Chamber to produce. It has been recognized as one of the top events in the Southeast, and the original slogan, “Don’t hibernate, celebrate!” still holds true today. “Blowing Rock WinterFest offers unique opportunities to come out and

celebrate this exciting season,” Goheen said. “Of all our events, I think this festival really showcases our town’s hospitality and fun-loving spirit!” The 2024 festival will see the return of two much-loved events: the WinterFest Wine Tasting & Auction and the WinterPaws Dog Show. “We are thrilled to have the return of The WinterPaws Dog Show and The Wine Tasting and Auction back to our list of events for the WinterFest celebration,” John added. “These events always pull in such a crowd and really make an impact on our WinterFest celebration. If you haven’t experienced them before, be sure to check them both out this year. On top of just being a blast to attend, they both raise money for great causes!” Several Blowing Rock WinterFest events have become highly anticipated, like the Polar Bear Plunge at Chetola JANUARY 2024

Lake. Hundreds of spectators gather to watch folks in zany costumes take the plunge! Many are plunging to raise awareness and funds for their favorite local nonprofit. Plunge registration is open to anyone who wants to take a dip in the icy water. Those who prefer to stay dry in the chilly temperatures can join in to help countdown participants from the lakeside fire pit. Spectator admission is free. John Carter of WBTV Charlotte returns as emcee, bringing lots of energy and humor to the event. Blowing Rock WinterFest, which has been named a AAA “Top Pick” and a Top 20 Event by the Southeastern Tourism Society, is presented by the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce, Blowing Rock TDA and Hendrick Luxury Group. Other event sponsors include The Blowing Rock, ERX, The Speckled Trout Restaurant and Bottle Shop and LifeStore Bank Insurance.

Polar Bear Plunge

An icy hit every year By Moss Brennan Hundreds of people descend on Chetola Lake every year to watch participants jump into the frigid waters in all kinds of costumes during the Polar Plunge. “If you haven’t seen this event, you do not want to miss it this year,” said Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce event coordinator John Goheen. “It is truly a memorable experience, especially if you are the one plunging into the icy cold lake! The costumes that the plungers come up with for their groups are priceless.” Sponsored by ERX and The Blowing Rock, the Polar Bear Plunge will begin registration at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, in the Chetola Lodge 2nd-floor foyer. Plungers will gather in the indoor pool area at 9:45 a.m. for a safety speech, and then groups of approximately 15 people at a time will start heading to Chetola Lake. Participants begin jumping at 10 a.m., but those wanting to watch should get there early for good viewing. Chetola starts cutting through the layer of ice well in advance so Plungers can feel the full impact of the frigid waters. In cases of extreme cold — as in 2022 — the event will be canceled. Make sure to visit BlowingRockWinterFest.com for the most updated information. Judges will award the best costume the famous “Golden Plunger” award. In 2023, a community member who was fully painted as a speckled trout, along with a fisherman “catching” him, earned the Golden Plunger Award. The jumpers were part of Blowing Rock business Speckled

Trout Outfitters. Polar Bear Plunge emcee John Carter of WBTV Charlotte — returning again this year — said the Speckled Trout costume was maybe “the best one ever.” Carter has been the longtime announcer at the Polar Bear Plunge. Many participants plunge to raise awareness and funds for their favorite local nonprofit. Plunge registration is open to anyone wanting to dip in the icy water. Those who prefer to stay dry in the chilly temperatures can join in to help countdown participants from the lakeside fire pit. Spectator admission is free. The first WinterFest Polar Plunge had only four jumpers, including Jimmy Crippen, Tracy Brown, Kent Tarbutton, and Dr. Davant. Each of them raised money from people who wanted to see them jump in the frigid waters of Chetola Lake.

88-year-old Joan Hearn is helped into the water at the Blowing Rock Polar Plunge. This was her 30th plunge.

Last-minute plungers can still sign up the morning of the Polar Bear Plunge in the Chetola Lodge 2nd-floor foyer. Dayof-event registration is $35 per person and begins at 8 a.m. Registrants will receive a WinterFest beach towel. A note for participants taking the plunge: Make sure to bring a towel and blanket for when you exit the lake.

Absolutely no one under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be allowed to participate in the plunge. Those wishing to register early online can do so at blowingrockwinterfest.com/ product/polar-bear-plunge/. Chetola Resort at Blowing Rock is located at 185 Chetola Lake Drive.

WinterFest Silent Auction to benefit Mountain Alliance By Luke Barber Silent auctions and raffles have long been an essential part of the WinterFest experience and an opportunity for festivalgoers to contribute to the community through charitable pursuits. This year, as in years year’s past, WinterFest attendees will be able to contribute to the life-changing work and experiences offered by the dedicated staff and volunteers of Mountain Alliance through their silent auction. Mountain Alliance’s mission is to provide transformative experiences and support to all Avery and Watauga teenagers, regardless of means or background. Through volunteer service, challenging outdoor adventure, cultural outings, after-school academic support, and mentorship, Mountain Alliance strives to unlock the leadership potential present in every teen. The nonprofit partners with Avery and

Watauga County Schools to help students succeed in school, graduate, dream big, and achieve their goals as they become the next leaders in the community. According to Rachel Witmer, associate director of Mountain Alliance, the organization has increased the goal from years past and hopes to raise $30,000 for the program through the silent auction. “The silent auction is our biggest fundraiser of the year! This fundraiser plays a big role in allowing us to provide transformative experiences and support for High Country teens at no cost to them,” Witmer said. This year, a wide range of items are available, which provides opportunities for folks to contribute to the organization at various levels. Items up for bid include gift cards to local restaurants, hotel stays, artwork, outdoor gear, spa packages, children’s toys, adventure experiences, theater and concert tickets, home goods, pet training

and boarding, trip packages, car services and more. Moreover, Witmer also touted some of the more highly sought-after items donated, including a one-week getaway to Hilton Head. Tickets to local events, including MerleFest, Banff Mountain Film Festival, Appalachian Football Club games, and others, are also available. Other items include clay shooting at Chetola Resort, slope tickets for local ski resorts, gorgeous artwork, unique outdoor experiences, and dozens upon dozens of other amazing prizes. The silent auction also allows festival goers to contribute monetary resources to Mountain Alliance while receiving an item they choose. Due to the nature of nonprofits, the money raised goes directly into supporting the program, events and staff. “A successful auction allows us to provide more meaningful programming to students in Avery and Watauga,” Witmer said. “We would not be able to run the number of programs that we do without the generous support of donors and bidders at the silent auction. We provide outdoor adventures, community service opportunities, cultural experiences, leadership opportunities, and after-school tutoring/mentoring programs at no cost to students, regardless of means or background. Without fundraisers like this one, we would not have the means to

support these programs.” Mountain Alliance provides a safe haven for teens growing up in the Appalachian area. Through compassion, hard work and removing the obstacle of idle hands, Mountain Alliance works with youth to keep them active and ready for the next adventure. The program offers more than 100 after-school and weekend events, with something new every week for students who are involved. Bidding for the silent auction opened on Saturday, Jan. 20 and will continue through Saturday, Jan. 27. As a hybrid auction, bidding will continue through the aforementioned time frame up until 4 p.m. on Jan. 27. The silent auction will be held at the American Legion Hall in Blowing Rock at 333 Wallingford St from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27. To learn more or to become a sponsor, visit mountainalliance.org/silentauction. Winning bidders can pick up items between 4:30 and 7 p.m. on Saturday. An additional pick-up time may be added later. After this time, items will be brought back to Watauga High School, and winning bidders can arrange pick-up. Items can also be shipped if the winning bidder pays for the shipping costs. It is preferred that items be picked up on Saturday, if possible.

WinterFest experiences You don’t want to miss! By Amanda Lugenbell The following are six signature WinterFest events that you don’t want to miss. So if you’re on a time constraint, make sure to check these awesome events out.

Zany Fun: Polar Bear Plunge

Saturday, January 27, 10 a.m. at Chetola Resort Each year, spectators gather around the north end of Chetola Lake on the Saturday morning of WinterFest to watch this exuberant celebration of winter fun! Be part of the excitement as dozens of jumpers brave the cold waters and take the plunge into the lake! Spectators are introduced to every jumper by the event emcee, John Carter of WBTV Charlotte. One of the best things about the Polar Bear Plunge: most jumpers are in outrageous costumes! Be there

to see which costume takes the prize of the coveted Golden Plunger. It’s all for a good cause, too, as proceeds from jumper registration go to local nonprofits. This event has been part of Blowing Rock WinterFest since the first festival 26 years ago. 2020 welcomed the largest number of Polar Bear Plunge jumpers ever, with 155 registered participants. Spectator attendance is free!

There have been some memorable designs and you don’t want to miss the collection this year! Past sculptures have included a teapot pouring tea, a trout jumping from a stream, a gang of playful Minions, a British phone box, Bigfoot, Photo by Moss Brennan and a piggy bank Hunger Heroes from the Hunger and Health Coalition. There’s no better way to warm up from all the winter activities during WinterFest than with a bowl of chili at the Rotary Chilly Chili Challenge. This year, the chili challenge takes place at the Blowing Rock School Gym on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participating restaurants serve their homemade chili and donate some of the proceeds to local nonprofit organizations. The chili-making restaurants and their nonprofit partners as of publication are Bistro Roca and Watauga Humane Society; Gideon Ridge and Mountain Alliance; Hellbender Bed and Beverage and Middle Fork Greenway; Blowing Rock Ale House and High Country Caregivers; The Speckled Trout (nonprofit TBD); Meadowbrook Inn and Habitat for Humanity; Twigs (nonprofit TBD); Pedalin Pig (nonprofit TBD); Six Pence and Casting Bread; Ham Shoppe and Hunger and Health Coalition; and The Best Cellar (nonprofit TBD). Attendees will travel around to different restaurants’ tables, tasting samples of their chili and voting for their favorite by making donations at that table. Long-time festival attendees will find this year’s location familiar as the event is back at the gym at Blowing Rock School, which offers plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the various flavors. The “People’s Choice Award” goes to the restaurant that raised the most money for their nonprofit partner. The nonprofit organization gets to keep the donations and the winning restaurant wins the coveted Golden Ladle.

The chili challenge is a popular event each WinterFest

“This encourages the restaurant/ nonprofit to work the crowd together as a team to raise money for the nonprofit,” said Charles Hardin, president/CEO of the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce. “Of course, the chili has to be good, but some supporters of the nonprofit will put $100 bills in the jar just to support their cause.” The “Judges Pick” award goes to the restaurant by a secret tasting panel of celebrity judges. The chilis are judged on a scale of one to five on aroma, creativity, flavor, texture and presentation/appearance. There is also a Home Cooks

Division in which people who are not professional chefs at local restaurants join the chili competition. Drinks are included in the ticket price and will be distributed by members of the Blowing Rock Rotary Club, sponsor of the chili challenge. Tickets are $10 per person. You can purchase online now or buy tickets at the door. If you purchase your tickets at the door, they will only accept cash. A message from the CHAMBER Since 2020, we have gradually brought WinterFest back to the event that people loved and looked forward to year after year. This year, we have completed this plan and visitors and locals alike will find all the old events that made WinterFest a time to celebrate winter and get out of hibernation. On Friday evening, you will want to stroll around town to see all the beautiful ice sculptures that our businesses have designed with the assistance of the professionals at Artisan Ice. The sculptures and lighting make

this a magical evening. To locate all the sculptures, you can find a map at the Visitor Center or on the WinterFest website, www. BlowingRockWinterFest.com. Saturday morning features the Polar Bear Plunge at Chetola Resort. You will want to come out and cheer on those who will be jumping into frigid water for local charities. From there, please stop by the Blowing Rock School for the Rotary Chilly Chili Challenge where local restaurants will serve up their creative versions of chili. This year, we have brought back the

“home cooks” division. After enjoying these culinary creations, you may wish to enjoy featured brews from local HighCountry breweries. For the wine connoisseurs, we have brought back the Winter Tasting and Charity Wine Auction benefiting Alzheimer’s research. Please join us at Green Park Inn to taste wines from around the world and from local wineries and then bid on some great wines, trips, and other items in the live auction. For family entertainment, you will definitely want to go

to Memorial Park to watch the live ice carving. You may want to take in the hayride from the Visitor Center or play the Hendrick Hunt for some great prizes. Don’t forget the silent auction in the American Legion Building. If you are staying over until Sunday, you will want to start the day off with a stack of pancakes at the Pancake Breakfast over at the school. At noon, we will conclude the festival with Winter Paws, an adorable hometown pet show at the Blowing Rock School.

Remember, WinterFest is an event to celebrate winter and to raise money for local non-profit organizations. Please share some of your fortune with those who are making an impact in our community. Give generously. We are glad you chose to visit the Village of Blowing Rock and hope that you will make many lasting memories at WinterFest as we celebrate winter!

Charles Hardin PRESIDENT/CEO BLOWING ROCK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A message from the mayor “As the old song goes, “Baby, it’s cold outside” — but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of warmth and good cheer — and loads of great fun — with the return of Blowing Rock Winterfest in 2024. I want to officially welcome all of you who are visiting Blowing Rock for this wonderful event. We hope you find it fun and worth your while enough that you will share the good times with all of your friends and relatives about it back home so they might be able to visit next year and beyond. I also want to take a moment to thank the incredible team of

volunteers spearheaded by the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce and Chetola Resort for putting this event on. Almost everything about Winterfest is not only fun, but for worthy causes, too. Organizations like Mountain Alliance, Western Youth Network, Hospitality House, Blue Ridge Conservancy, Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture, and Blowing Rock Art & History Museum are just a few of the non-profit organizations that benefit. The first Blowing Rock WinterFest was presented in 1998, created to bring celebration to an otherwise sleepy season (unless, of course, you are a skier or snowboarder). More than two decades later, the festival continues

with a refresh of several past events and some new ones, too during its 26th year. Lots of festival activities are free; some are ticketed with most or all of the proceeds going to benefit a non-profit. WinterFest, which has been named a AAA “Top Pick” and a Top 20 Event by Southeastern Tourism Society, is organized by the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce and presented by Hendrick Luxury Group. The Town of Blowing Rock thanks them, as well as all of the sponsors, volunteers, and you, our guests, for making Winterfest possible.”

Humvee Hayrides back by popular demand By Jerry Snow Residents will have a chance to take a hayride behind a Humvee again at the 26th Annual Blowing Rock Winterfest on Jan. 27. “It was really amazing having that Humvee last year and it drew a lot of attention from everyone in town,” said John Goheen, the Events & Communication Director for the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce. The Hayrides are sponsored by The Speckled Trout Outfitters, which is located at 916 Main St in Blowing Rock. Speckled Trout Outfitters offers

outdoor adventures like guided hikes and fly fishing experiences in the area. Naturally, their fleet of vehicles includes those best-suited for rugged roads and landscapes. “Everyone has seen tractor hayrides, but it is rare to get to see a Humvee pulling the wagon,” Goheen said. “So, we are thrilled to be able to have them back this year sponsoring that event.” The Hayrides are free and will pick up at the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce — located at 132 Park Avenue — from noon until 3 p.m. The Hayrides are first come The Blowing Rock WinterFest hayrides are a little different than most as participants get pulled by a Humvee instead of a normal tractor. first serve.

WinterFest’s Wine Tasting and Auction promises good times for a good cause The WinterFest Wine Tasting and Auction takes place on Saturday, Jan. 27.

By Lexie Carroll Silent auctions and raffles have long been an essential part of the WinterFest experience and an opportunity for festivalgoers to contribute to the community through charitable pursuits. WinterFest is bringing back its famous Wine Tasting and Auction at the historic Green Park Inn this year. The WinterFest Wine Tasting and Auction takes place on Saturday, Jan. 27. “These events always pull in such a crowd and really make an impact on our WinterFest celebration,” said event coordinator John Goheen.

The tasting begins at 3 p.m. with an exceptional selection of international and local wines from Linville Falls Winery, Grandfather Vineyard & Winery, Old Barn Winery and Wine to Water. Fine wine tasting stations will have experts for countries and wine regions such as Spain, France, Italy, Chile/ Argentina, New Zealand/Australia/South Africa and the Pacific Northwest. The auction immediately follows at 5 p.m. with items ranging from wine to vacation packages. Attendees who participate in the auction can bid on vacation packages, wines, glassware, and

lots more with incredibly low starting bids on many items. Additionally, The Blowing Rock Rotary Club’s Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust (CART) is the recipient of the proceeds from the wine auction, according to Charles Hardin, president/ CEO of the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce. Founded in 1995, CART is a grassroots organization that provides funding for research grants to help find a cure or treatments for Alzheimer’s, according to CART’s website. In previous years, this auction has

netted approximately $3,000 for CART. “(The auction) has not been held since 2020, so we are hoping for a good result this year,” Hardin said. Tickets are on sale now for $35. Participants must be 21 years of age or older and be sure to bring ID. Attendees should drink responsibly and have a designated driver. The event is sponsored by LifeStore Bank and Insurance. Get your pets involved in winter fun at this year’s WinterPaws Dog Show By Lexie Carroll Furry friends have an event of their own this year at WinterFest at the WinterPaws Dog Show on Sunday, Jan. 28. Finish off the weekend at the Blowing Rock School Gym at the dog show from 1 to 3 p.m. Whether showing off your pup or just coming to watch Blowing Rock’s fourlegged best friends, WinterPaws Dog Show has a great show in store for all. The WinterPaws Dog Show was first held years ago by the Watauga Humane Society as a fundraising event. Resident and pet groomer Victoria Kerley was very involved with the humane society and helped organize the event over the years when it first became part of WinterFest. “I had a complete blast doing the shows and being a part of the community and helping animals in need,” Kerley said. But like most events and activities during COVID-19, the dog show was canceled for a few years. However, this year, town council member Melissa Pickett, also the finance director for Hunger and Health Coalition, asked to take on the show to help raise funds for the nonprofit organization,

according to Charles Hardin, the president/ CEO of the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce.

“We discussed the model that we had used before, and her team went to work and got it back up for us!” Hardin said. “It is very popular with the locals since everyone in town has a dog.” Participants can register to compete in the show by bringing three canned goods or $5 per category. The show’s categories include Most Unique Breed, Most Clever Trick, Best Dressed/Winter Attire, Looks Like Their Owner, Cutest Dog and Best in Show.

Goheen said that the goal of WinterFeast is to exhibit the unique menus of local restaurants while connecting with new and existing customers. “We try to connect them with as many people as possible and really just put the spotlight on them that night,” Goheen

said. WinterFeast begins with dinner in the Garden Room of the Green Park Inn. After dinner, guests can enjoy dessert and drinks in the Library and Tea Room, as well as live music. WinterFest Beer Garden Full of tasty delights By Luke Barber The festival organizers of this year’s WinterFest are asking High Country Patrons to “Don’t Hibernate, Celebrate!” and a celebration is just what visitors can expect at this year’s WinterFest Beer Garden. From 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Meadowbrook Inn’s Four Seasons Ballroom, festival goers will be able to enjoy a wide variety of hand-crafted and award-winning brews from some of the High Country’s most popular breweries. Local breweries participating in this year’s Beer Garden include Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Booneshine Brewing Company, Blowing Rock Brewing Company, Lost Province Brewing Co., SouthEnd Brewing Co. and Parallel Brewing Co. The 2024 Beer Garden is sponsored by The Speckled Trout Restaurant and Bottle Shop, and attendees of the proceedings will be able to sample some of the finest brews — and some food — that these businesses offer. Popular selections from the breweries in attendance include the Long Leaf IPA and the Boone Creek Blonde Ale from Appalachian Mountain Brewery, as well as the Space Pegasus New England Style IPA and the High Country Honey Amber Ale from Booneshine Brewing Company, among many other savory selections from the breweries present. Moreover, patrons of the Beer Garden will be able to taste brews from one of the newer members of the local brew scene. Parallel Brewing Co. is preparing to open its new taproom this spring at The Beacon. Parallel Brewing Co. serves a curated list of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. John Goheen, events director for the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce, said this year’s WinterFest Beer Garden will offer a shift from years past when the beer garden was offered outdoors. “We’ve moved to presenting the Beer Garden indoors, where attendees can be more comfortable, and the experience isn’t impacted by weather conditions,” Goheen said. Mystery Hill is one of the many Blowing Rock destinations that participate each year in the annual WinterFest celebration with its Chill at the Hill. The attraction offers a variety of events, including the WinterDuck Derby during the weekend of festivities. One of the popular events is the WinterDuck Derby at the attraction. Guests can pick their numbered rubber duck, wish it luck, and send it racing down one of Mystery Hill’s gem mine sluices to compete for the title of WinterDuck Derby champ. The event is fun for all ages. In previous years, people from all over the state participated in the derby with some conceding they thought they would be picking real ducks. But not to worry, the rubber ducks are just as fun. The following is a list of other WinterFest related activities offered at Mystery Hill this year. Start your day with a WinterFest pancake breakfast By Amanda Lugenbell The original WinterFest Pancake Breakfast is back! In the early days of Blowing Rock WinterFest, the Pancake Breakfast was coordinated as a fun, approachable way to raise funds for support services for Blowing Rock Fire & Rescue. A group of volunteers would take over the kitchen at the Blowing Rock School Cafeteria and serve stacks of pancakes and sides to hungry locals right off the cafeteria line. Winterfest breakfast events have varied through the years, but this original concept was brought back last year with great success. The 2024 event again returns to the much-beloved format. Once again, a small army of volunteers will cook the food right in the cafeteria to serve hot and fresh to guests! This year’s event is presented by — and will benefit — the Blowing Rock School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO). The PTO provides money for funding a wide variety of teacher requests at the school. This year, the organization has paid for grade-level specific books, new

club startup costs, new gym mats, tripods for teachers seeking board certifications, field trip stipends, school event supplies such as new pop-up tents and hot drink dispensers, 8th-grade class sweatshirts, teacher appreciation events, and more. Their mission states, “The Blowing Rock School PTO is an organization whose purpose is to enhance the cooperation of parents, teachers, and administrators in the promotion of the welfare of the children of Blowing Rock School and to aid in their education. We aspire to help every Rocket reach the stars!” Join in on Sunday, Jan. 28, from 8 to 10 a.m. Plates are $12. Here’s what’s on the menu: Full Stack: 4 made-to-order pancakes with blueberry-cranberry compote, 2 pieces of meat (choose from bacon or sausage), syrup & butter. Meals will include a hot or cold beverage: hot tea, coffee or orange juice. Don’t miss it! Visit www. blowingrockschoolpto.com/events to purchase tickets, or to make a donation to the Blowing Rock School PTO.
