One of the top rivalries in North Carolina, if not the Southeast, is in grave danger. Appalachian State hosts Western Carolina for the final time with both teams still in the Southern Conference. They’ll play for the Old Mountain Jug with the possibility that the Jug could take a longtime residence at one of the schools. Usually Appalachian State is heavily favored. Appalachian State has won 28 of the last 30 games between the teams, with the Mountaineers getting ready for the FCS playoffs and Western Carolina in the middle of another rebuilding year. But things could be different this year. Appalachian State is playing much better in November than it was in September, but it is still 3-8 going into the game Saturday. Western Carolina is 2-9, but is improving. Both teams are very young. Western Carolina starts six freshmen and five sophomores on offense, including sophomore quarterback Troy Mitchell. Defensively, the

Catamounts start three freshmen and four sophomores. Appalachian State is not as young, but still starts its share of freshmen. The Mountaineers started two freshmen on offense in their 33-21 victory over Wofford last week, but one of those freshmen is running back Marcus Cox, who is one of the team’s top weapons. Defensively, the Mountaineers start two freshman, one of them being nose tackle Tyson Fernandez, who was playing offensive tackle until the Mountaineers played Chattanooga on Nov. 2. Three other freshmen will see plenty of time defensively. But back to the rivalry. Most rivalries start because of either geography or competition. App State’s rivalries with Georgia Southern and Wofford are heated because they are usually competing for the Southern Conference championship. Western Carolina is a geographical rivalry. It’s also a longtime rivalry that dates back to 1932. Unfortunately, it’s not going to be the same, at least for football.
