The best of Ashe County While much of the nation continues to climb out of the Great Recession, it is undeniable that the business climate in Ashe County is better off than most.

This is in large part thanks to a lively business community that is embraced by a wide range of shop keepers and professionals, and one that is forwarded by the business friendly attitude of local officials prescient enough to invest in infrastructure and other enhancements. Because of this, Ashe County business is a vibrant and growing force in our community.

But, not to paint too rosy a picture — each individual business and professional success comes only with the effort of those who run, and the employees of, those businesses and service providers.

In other words, only with hard work and a dedication to the community does a local business claim success.

And, among the successful, only those with a level of work and dedication that surpasses their peers can claim to be the best in Ashe County.

Which brings us to Jan. 23 at Hensley Hall at West Jefferson United Methodist Church and a gathering of more than 200 business owners, staff and professional service providers for an annual and growing event, Ashe Mountain Times’ “The Best of the Best in Ashe County.”

It’s important to note that this gathering is more than a red carpet luncheon at which awards denoting the best of our business community are presented. Indeed, it is because those awards are chosen by the community — readers of Ashe Mountain Times and patrons of our local businesses who submit votes listing their top choices in more than

100 categories from accountant to women’s clothing — that the honor is so significant. All across Ashe County, a “best of” plaque hanging at the entrance of a business means you have stepped into an establishment deemed superior to all others as chosen not by a newspaper or an advertising department, but by those who matter most — its customers.

That is no easy benchmark to achieve, and this is what the

Jan. 23 event’s keynote speaker, Robert “Bob” Washburn, president and chief executive officer of LifeStore Financial Group, meant when he said that there are five components of every successful and thriving business: vision, culture, respect, training and flexibility.

Washburn is correct — as the more than five dozen businesses represented at the event could attest to. Each of those business-

es — and especially among them the event’s sponsors, Boondocks Brewing, Dr. Joel Yates General Dentistry and Parker Tie Co. — earned their place and recognition through superior customer service and an attitude of “giving back” to the community of which they are a part.

In recognition of that service and attitude, Ashe Mountain Times is proud to present this special section listing all of our
