he Great Recession officially ended in June 2009, but as any Ashe County business owner can tell you, the loss of wealth that resulted from that event led to deep cutbacks in consumer spending — cutbacks that still resonate today.

Cutbacks that mean, even now, those business owners and members of our local workforce face steep challenges to professional success and growth.

Which brings us to the Ashe Mountain Times “The Best of Ashe County,” an annual event in which we celebrate the business leaders and their employees who not only successfully embraced those challenges and obstacles, but grew above them to claim the honor of being named the “best” in their field.

That’s quite an achievement, and one made all the more significant because it comes from being chosen not by the editorial or advertising boards of Ashe Mountain Times, but from the voters

who matter most — members of our community.

It is the readers of Ashe Mountain Times — the customers who patronize the businesses and services listed in this section — who vote on and decide who earns the “best of” honor.

Through the months of October and November, readers submit votes for businesses and services in more than 150 categories, from accountant to best wedding venue.

On Monday, Jan. 25, nearly 200 of those finalists and their employees gathered to celebrate the occasion in a red carpet luncheon co-sponsored by Ashe County Ford, Parker Tie and SkyLine/SkyBest in Hensley Hall at West Jefferson United Methodist Church.

The keynote speaker was Mountain Times Publications advertising director Charlie Price, who minced no words in naming Ashe County the place where “people take care of each other” in a business community that operates “from the heart and not necessarily for profit and gain.”

Awards were presented by Price and Ron Brown, general manager of the Ashe Mountain Times.

While being named “the best” is an honor at any time, being so named by your customers is the pinnacle of business success.

In recognition of that success, we at Ashe Mountain Times are proud to present this special section listing the finalists, the winners and pictures from the event.
