MHCC in the Community

Sixty years ago, this community believed East County needed a college of its own. A place where people could learn, build careers, change direction, and create better futures close to home. They believed in what was possible, even when others weren’t sure it could be done. Today, I see the answer to that belief everywhere: in the student walking into class for the first time, unsure of what comes next; the graduate crossing the stage, surrounded by those who helped them get there; the faculty member who stays a few extra minutes to help; and the employee who makes sure a door is open or a question is answered. I see it in our community: in the healthcare professionals, educators, tradespeople, business owners and leaders who began their journeys at MHCC and now contribute to the communities they call home. For 60 years, people have come here seeking a beginning, a second chance, a new career, a place to belong, or a way forward. And for 60 years, this college has helped them take that next step. Our 60th anniversary theme, From Here, Higher, celebrates that spirit through our call for 60 Stories for 60 Years. I hope you’ll share yours. MHCC’s story is thousands of stories woven together across generations, programs, families and communities. As we celebrate six decades, I am grateful for everyone who has helped make this college what it is, and hopeful for what comes next. Thank you for being part of the MHCC story.

Lisa Skari, Ed.D. President, Mt. Hood Community College 1

“Taking that first step is often the hardest part, and for 60 years, MHCC has been here to make it a little easier.“ -Dr. Lisa Skari

Every journey begins differently. For some, it’s earning college credit while still in high school. For others, it’s learning a new trade, changing careers, returning to school, or discovering a new passion. Whatever the path, MHCC remains a place where people are supported, challenged, and inspired to move from here...higher.

From Here, Higher

Celebrating 60 Years of Elevating Opportunity There was a time when people questioned whether East County needed its own community college. They wondered if the region was ready, or if the classrooms would ever be full. Sixty years later, the answer is unmistakable.

And the impact of those journeys is felt throughout our region. MHCC alumni contribute more than $350 million to the regional economy each year, bringing their skills and expertise to businesses, schools, healthcare organizations, and communities across East County and beyond. The activities of MHCC and its students support one in every 29 jobs in the MHCC District.

From an inaugural class of just 86 students to more than 18,000 students each year today, Mt. Hood Community College has become a place where opportunities begin, careers take shape, and communities grow stronger.

Healthcare is one example of that impact. In the past five years alone, MHCC has trained nearly 1,000 healthcare professionals who are now on their way to caring for patients throughout the region. Along the way, health professions students contribute more than 60,000 volunteer hours each year to local hospitals and clinics, gaining hands-on experience while giving back to the communities they will serve.

Rooted in East County, MHCC has spent six decades empowering students, families, employers, and neighbors to reach new heights. The result is a legacy that reaches far beyond our campus.

That spirit extends beyond the classroom. From the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival and cultural events to Head Start, workforce training, small business support, athletics, and community partnerships, MHCC is woven into the fabric of East County.

MHCC Magazine - Fall Edition - Vol. 3.1

Jeffrey, a third-generation Saint, graduated last spring with three associate degrees while serving as student body president. Poised to becoming one of the thousands of healthcare professionals MHCC prepares for the regional workforce, Jeffrey represents the opportunity, determination, and community that have defined the college for 60 years. “Every student who walks through our doors brings a dream, a goal, or a fresh start,” says MHCC President Lisa Skari. “Taking that first step is often the hardest part, and for 60 years, MHCC has been here to make it a little easier. We help people discover what they’re capable of by providing the opportunity, support, and encouragement they need to reach higher.”

Grab Your 60th Anniversary Passport Help us celebrate 60 years of MHCC by experiencing the people, programs and places that make the college special. Pick up a MHCC 60th anniversary passport from the Gresham campus or at one of our 60th anniversary events then explore campus locations, attend performances, planetarium shows, and cultural and athletic events. Prizes will be awarded along the way!

This anniversary isn’t simply about looking back. It’s about celebrating the people who have shaped MHCC and continue to define its future, the students, alumni, employees, retirees, donors, and community partners whose contributions continue to make our region stronger. To honor those voices, we’re launching 60 Stories for 60 Years, a yearlong storytelling campaign celebrating the people and moments that have defined Mt. Hood Community College. Whether MHCC helped launch your career, introduce you to lifelong friends, inspire a new direction, or become part of your family’s story, we’d love to hear it.

Reaching New Heights MHCC’s Petra LeBaron-Botts Summits Denali Peak At Mt. Hood Community College, From Here, Higher isn’t just a tagline — it’s reflected in the dedication, expertise, and ambition of our faculty. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program Director Petra LeBaron-Botts embodies that spirit, helping to relaunch MHCC’s EMT program while continuing to push her own limits. Most recently, she returned from an extraordinary accomplishment: summiting Denali, North America’s highest peak. LeBaron-Botts and three other women made up the Latitude 45° Alpine Team, one of the few teams comprised entirely of women. With each of them being part of a mountain rescue team, they brought experience and knowledge to this 18-day expedition, reaching an elevation of more than 20,000 feet. This climb was prompted and partially sponsored by a fellow Portland Mountain Rescue member, who asked the Latitude 45° Alpine Team to bring his late wife’s ice axe to the summit, which they succeeded in doing. With experience as an EMT and as the director of the EMT program at MHCC, LeBaron-Botts felt confident and prepared for this endeavor. Her knowledge and experience allow her to spot signs of common ailments encountered in mountaineering, such as altitude illness and frostbite, as well as traumatic injuries that may occur during a climb. Fortunately, the Denali expedition went smoothly with no injuries or ailments, but there have been previous climbs 4

where her skills saved lives. On a climb a few years ago, one of her partners fell and broke their back and arm and sustained a head injury. This accident required the team to splint the broken arm, immobilize the patient’s head and spine, and package the patient for transport—all skills taught in MHCC’s EMT and Wilderness First Responder programs. Beyond learning these life-saving skills, EMT training prepares students mentally for emergencies that can happen anywhere. LeBaron-Botts stresses the importance of practicing scenarios repeatedly so that if students encounter one in real life, they are able to perform life-saving interventions without panic. A mountain summit represents more than the highest point of a climb. It reflects the preparation, determination, and teamwork required to get there. The same is true of becoming an EMT. At Mt. Hood Community College, From Here, Higher can mean helping students rise to meet extraordinary challenges so they can lift others up in moments of crisis. Building our future together.

A Look Back at Year One In May 2025, our community made a historic investment in the future of Mt. Hood Community College. With the passage of Measure 26-258, voters approved the first MHCC bond in 50 years, providing $136.4 million to create safer, more modern spaces for students, employees and the community. Following the bond sale, MHCC’s strong Aa2 Moody’s credit rating helped generate an additional $10.9 million in proceeds, bringing the total investment to more than $147 million. A little over one year later, that investment is starting to take shape across campus. Here are a few highlights:

Fall 2025: Visual Arts Building Pilot Upgrade Roofing and siding improvements on a pilot upgrade of this space were successfully completed, helping protect the building, improve safety and extend the life of this well-used instructional space.

Spring 2026: Aquatic Center Dome Construction MHCC made good progress toward the new retractable dome for the Olympic-sized outdoor pool, including installation of the support piles that will anchor the new structure. Once complete, the dome will allow the pool to be used year-round.

Winter 2026: Track and Field Upgrades A newly resurfaced track now provides a safer, higher-quality surface for students and athletes while helping MHCC host regional and national competitions on a larger scale including the 2026 Big Sky Track and Field Championships.

Summer 2026: Planning and Early Design Alongside partners R&C Management Group and local architecture and engineering firms, planning and early design are underway for improvements ranging from career education and health professions facilities to athletics, science labs, accessibility, student spaces, classrooms and campus infrastructure. Name: Taylor Young Hometown: Troutdale, Oregon Major: Business What brought you to MHCC? Besides being close to home, I’ve always had interest in MHCC. My mom and sister both went there and had a great experience. Once I committed to MHCC I was really excited for what it had to ofer. How has your experience at MHCC shaped you? I have made so many new friendships and have met so many people. Learning from my teachers has helped me in and outside of school, which I am so grateful for. What does being an MHCC student mean to you? Being a student at MHCC has showed that I can reach my goals. When I set an attainable goal the people and teachers around me really help me achieve them. What are your goals after graduation? I want to transfer to a four-year to continue volleyball and my academic career. But if I’m not able to, I’m really hoping to go into real estate and get a job to continue my life after college. Favorite MHCC moment? My freshman year we were up in Centralia, and we got stuck there. We played Just Dance, did line dances, and learned more about each-other as a team. We did get home safe, but the team bonding was so much fun! 66

Hunter crosses the plate during Central Catholic High School’s 2011 state championship.

A New Chapter for Saints Baseball Lucas Hunter named eighth head coach in MHCC baseball history Mt. Hood Community College is excited to welcome Lucas Hunter as the eighth head baseball coach in the program’s 58-year history. A Portland native and Central Catholic High School graduate, Hunter brings a lifetime of baseball experience - and deep roots in the local baseball community to the Saints. “I feel incredibly fortunate to represent my hometown, the diverse communities that have shaped me and the baseball community as a whole. I want our program to be a place where players from every background feel seen, valued and challenged to become the best versions of themselves—not only as baseball players, but as people.” Hunter’s path to MHCC includes a standout playing career. He was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 31st round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft before continuing his collegiate career at the University of Portland. “Lucas brings tremendous energy, a strong understanding of player development, and a deep connection to the local baseball community,” said MHCC Athletic Director Dr. Kim

Mt. Hood Community College

Hyatt. “His vision for the program aligns with our commitment to student success, competitive excellence and meaningful engagement with our community.” Baseball is also a family tradition for Hunter. His father, Brian Hunter, played 12 seasons in Major League Baseball and led the American League in stolen bases in 1997. Now, Hunter brings that family legacy and regional experience to MHCC, where Saints Baseball has spent nearly six decades helping student-athletes pursue their goals on the field and in the classroom. For generations of Saints, the program has provided a pathway to four-year institutions and opportunities beyond community college. As one chapter closes, another begins. MHCC extends its gratitude to Korey Kier, who led the Saints since 2022 and helped foster a culture of accountability, resilience and personal growth for his players.

Tobias Read Champions Oregon’s Entrepreneurs at MHCC Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read joined entrepreneurs, business owners, community partners and industry experts at Mt. Hood Community College this summer for the annual Entrepreneur and Small Business Resource Fair, hosted by the college’s Small Business Development Center. Read opened the event by recognizing the resilience and innovation of Oregon’s small-business community and emphasizing the importance of investing in entrepreneurs as drivers of local economic growth. The event provided a day of learning, networking and collaboration, connecting entrepreneurs with resources to help turn ideas into thriving businesses. Through no-cost business advising, educational workshops and confdential one-on-one technical assistance, MHCC’s Small Business Development Center helps business owners navigate challenges and identify opportunities for growth. “Entrepreneurship creates opportunities, not only for business owners, but for entire communities,” said Diana Moreno, director of the MHCC Small Business Development Center. “Our goal is to ensure every entrepreneur has access to trusted guidance, meaningful connections and practical resources that help them succeed.” Tobias Read is pictured at left in the top photo and at left in the bottom right photo.
