Mt. Hood Community College Pool Open for Summer Swimming

Swim lesson financial assistance available and several swim league events scheduled.

The pool at Mt. Hood Community College is open and ready for community members to enjoy this summer. The construction and repairs of Mt. Hood Community College’s (MHCC) 25-yard indoor pool are complete and the Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center has returned to full, normal function.

This project began in November 2022 and entailed repairing and replacing concrete gutters, sourcing and installing new viewing windows, replacing underwater lights, and replacing the original tile surrounding the pool deck with durable, nonslip epoxy. These repairs ensure a safe, usable, and sustainable pool space for many years to come.

“We’re excited to welcome back the community to our newly renovated aquatic center for some family-friendly summer fun,” said Dr. Kim Hyatt, dean of health, physical education, athletics, aquatics, and recreation at MHCC. The 50-meter outdoor pool remains open for year-round use. The aquatic center regularly offers a variety of community swim lessons at the indoor learner pool and has recently expanded its lesson offerings following the reopening of the 25-yard indoor pool.

Besides unveiling a newly renovated pool, the aquatic center is excited to about a number of new initiatives and opportunities for our community members. One of those initiatives is the Swim Lesson Inclusion Program (SLIP), which began in May 2023. SLIP assists low-income families in accessing MHCC swim lessons by providing a 50% discount on swim lessons to families using government assistance programs. SLIP is intended to provide increasingly diverse, equitable, and inclusive aquatic learning opportunities for everyone in the MHCC community. More information about participating or donating to this initiative can be found by contacting the aquatic center at 503-491-7243 or by emailing aquatic.center@mhcc.edu.

The aquatic center also partnered with several competitive swimming and water polo leagues to welcome back a full slate of swim meets and water polo tournaments at the pool this summer. Highlights include the National Veterans Wheelchair Games on July 8, 2023, and the Oregon Swimming Inc. Age Group Long Course Championships July 20-23, 2023. The aquatic center is hiring for several positions including lifeguard, instructor, and customer service representative. Community members are encouraged to apply. Discounted lifeguard certification is available for interested candidates. Information on employment opportunities, public lap swim, aqua aerobics, events, and adaptive pool use opportunities can be found by visiting https://www.mhcc.edu/aquatics/.

The aquatic center staff posts additional information, including construction and closure updates, on their Facebook and Instagram pages as well at https://www.facebook.com/MHCCAquaticsCenter and https://www.instagram.com/mhccaquaticcenter/.
