This breed’s origin is shrouded in mystery. Some believe the birds were directly imported from China via ships, others believe they were bred within the US from other Asian breeds. Regardless of how - an enormous, stately, well-designed breed was born…or would it be hatched? Brahmas – named after the Brahmaputra River which lies in the Himalayas - are colossal birds. They have loose and fluffy feathering that runs all the way down to their toes. Their sheer size, feathered shanks, and small pea combs allow them to thrive in cooler climates. Hens lay consistently throughout the winter. They’re calm, making them a great choice for backyard flocks.

Australorps, also known as ‘the Australian Orpingtons’ are an incredibly popular breed, and justifiably. They are calm, quiet, and very good brown egg layers. This is the bird you want in your flock if you’re a beginner. Orpingtons are known for their pet-like, docile nature. They’re sizeable and curvy birds with loose, fluffy feathering which makes them seem even larger. Orpingtons are easy to handle - in fact, they often enjoy it - but given their passive nature they tend to be low on the pecking order. Hens are good layers of brown eggs that often go broody. More than just for looks, these functional birds have been a barnyard staple for generations. The name Wyandotte comes from the Native American tribe Wyandots who occupied the surrounding areas of Lake Ontario – modern day New York and Ontario, Canada. Given the climate they were developed in – it’s no wonder this breed is so cold hardy. They have deep, wide bodies covered in dense, close-fitting feathers to keep them warm; they also sport a small rose comb that is less susceptible to frostbite. Hens are generally docile and a good layer of brown eggs. Roosters are sometimes aggressive - making good protectors. The modern Wyandotte is adaptable, can succeed in confinement or a free-range setting, and is often labeled a dual-purpose, sustainable breed.

So,what’s the deal with colored eggs?
Undoubtedly the most popular autosexing breed to date. This curious breed’s appearance varies between sexes. Roosters are a range of cream and slate barring where the hen sports a small crest. Contrary to popular belief, eggshell color has no direct influence on nutritional value. In fact, all eggs start off white! A blue egg for example gets its color from oocyanin, which is delivered early in the formation process, therefore penetrates the whole shell. Brown eggs are colored from the compound protoporphyrin – which is added as the already formed shell passes through the oviduct. Because of the disparity of pigment delivery times, we can have green or olive egg shells – shells that have been exposed to both pigments!

Ayam Cemani
Also known as the ‘rarest chicken on earth’ the Ayam Cemani is truly an exquisite bird. They are intensely black from their feathers to their organs. Ayam Cemanis originated from Java, Indonesia within the village of ‘cemani’ where ‘ayam’ means ‘chicken’. They resemble a gamebird in shape, light, and compact. Cemanis weigh only 4-5lbs and lay cream-colored eggs. We are always striving for the best breed representation possible, however we cannot guarantee pigment distribution in Cemanis. Uneven distribution is normally manifested in white toes, stray white feather(s), and/or purple or red combs. This slow-growing broiler is wellsuited for more natural rearing methods, such as free-range or organic systems. They are active birds that enjoy being able to forage. Characteristics include yellow skin, shanks, and beaks along with mostly red feathering. A small percentage of Freedom Rangers can be tri-colored.

This product is an excellent combination of vitamins and electrolytes that will help combat leg weakness in your broilers. Although exceptionally helpful with meat birds, this product is beneficial for all of our poultry with the exception of ducklings. Cornish X Rock Cross
Crossing of purebred Cornish and White Rock hens produces this fine broiler. Cornish Cross are the most popular, fastest growing and most efficient meat chicken on the market. They have large breast, thigh, and leg proportions. Their white feathers and yellow skin make for clean processing. We cannot overemphasize the importance of proper nutrition for successful results from our Cornish X Rock Cross chicks! The tremendous growth rate makes it absolutely essential to feed a broiler ration to this bird. We recommend a 23% protein starter ration for the first four weeks and a 20% protein grower ration the remainder of the growing period. Prepare Your Chicks for a Healthy Start Care and Brooding Instructions for Day Old Poultry
Containment and Temperature - Start with clean quarters. Chicks need to be kept at 95°F for the first 10 days. This is extremely important. Decrease the temperature by 5°F each week thereafter. The ideal temperature for a 6-week-old bird is 70°F. The most common source of heat is a 250-watt bulb. We recommend a barrier or draft guard be placed around your brooder lamp. This contains your birds and keeps young chicks within a reasonable amount of space (.5 sq ft / bird) thus keeping them closer to the heat source. When decreasing temperature always consider the behavior of your chicks - if they are constantly huddling, they are likely too cold. If they’re evenly dispersed, moving around and eating and drinking, they are comfortable. Litter - Provide a 2 - 4-inch depth of suitable litter. Pine shavings are ideal as they are absorbent, accessible and have enough texture for foot grip - yet too large to be eaten. Never use straw, newspaper, or any other slick surface as it could cause crippling leg issues. Food and Water - Chicks must always have fresh food and water. Feed a quality medicated starter feed for the first 6-8 weeks then switch to a grower feed. Feed choice into adulthood will vary by breed, purpose, etc. You can scatter a fine grit over the feed. Chicks may need direction to feed and water initially; we recommend dipping each bird’s beak in the water upon unboxing. Water should be lukewarm. Feed and water should be placed at a midpoint between the heat source and the barrier. Supplements - We cannot stress enough the benefits of adding a Vitamin Stress Pack to your order. Most of the chick loss within or shortly after shipping is directly related to stress and dehydration. Our Vitamin Stress Pack is specifically formulated to stimulate water consumption and combat potential shipping stress.
