Dissertation title What is the question you want to answer or problem you wish to solve?

Henri Cartier-Bressons “Behind SaintLazare Station� - Paris 1932 is the greatest example of The Decisive Moment. It remains the greatest photograph of all time!

Why?

Outline summary of dissertation focus What are you going to investigate?

I am going to look at how today everyone is a photographer, and wether anyone will better Bressons image? If not why not?

Areas of research What texts, context and theories are you going to engage with?

I will investigate Bresson, how he took his photos. The context will remain primarily in the photojournalist genre-with a glance at the wider spectrum. I will investigate the advance in technology and the aid it provides to capture the decisive moment.

I will use muti/mass-media texts for research including Graham Clarkes The Photograph, and Liz Wells A modern History of Photography.

Research methods How are you going to carry out your research? Is it going to be secondary research using books, journals and articles or primary research using quantitative or qualitative research such as questionnaires or interviews?

The majority of the research I conduct will be secondary research using books, journals, and online material. I will attempt to gather some primary reserach by contacting Magnum direct. My research will primarily be qualitative attempting to decode meanings within interviews and texts etc.

Justification What is your aim in carrying out this research in this way?

I want to have a broad knowledge of Bresson, and his responce to taking a photograph. By using as many media formats as possible, and potentially contacting someone from Magnum it will give me a broad spectrum of data to analyse.
