1988-89 Montana Tech Oxpeckers Once again the Montana Tech Soccer Club's membership read like a roll call at the United Nations. The team competed in tournaments all over Montana, and against teams from throughout the Western United States and Canada. This year also saw the inception of the highly successful co-ed team, who won a tournament on their first outing and finished a respectable third out of eight in the combined Montana-Idaho tourney. The men's team, at the time of writing, are the Montana State Indoor Champions. The soccer club provides an excellent vantage point from which to travel around the state, meet fellow students from all over the world, and keep in shape. Why not try out for the team, beginners to professionals are welcome.

The one-fledgling Montana Tech radio station · KMSM-FM · has made some moves to attract new listeners. The station, which broadcasts in stereo, was once known for its heavy metal rock bent, but has now shifted to a more middle of the road, yet is still progressive in its musical formats. Taking to the air around 1972 from the tech campus, with only 10 watts of power, the station is supported by student fees and contributions, either by in-kind services or record donations. It now broadcasts with 50 watts in stereo at 91.5 on the FM dial and this year boasts about 60 disc jockeys.
74 KMSM-FM
The students take to the air from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. MondaySunday. Each student has about a two-hour stint at the controls, playing selections chosen by the Dj or taking requests. The station has made some program changes bring more credibility and consistency to the station. For instance, every day at noon, Monday-Friday the station broadcasts weather reports, sports, and news briefs. The station, established in 1972 with a model cities grant is supported mainly by student fees. Students are assessed a $5.00 fee per semester to cover costs of the station. That totals roughly $10,000 and just about pays the bills.
For example, within the walls of the TLC, peer tutors work with students individually or in small groups to help them with course work in a variety of subject areas. If students prefer to work alone, self-tutorial programs are also available, such as computer aided instruction, videotape instruction, cassettes, slides, and workbooks. Sometimes the learning process needs a helping hand ... and that is what the tech Learning Center (TLC) is all about. After several months of planning, organizing, and creating, the TLC first opened its doors to the Montana Tech students in January of 1988. Located on the first floor of Engineering Hall, the TLC provides a variety of resources - free of charge - to students who wish to develop their skills for Improved academic success.
Overall, the TLC addresses the importance of learning how to learn and of developing basic college skills. Therefore, true to a long-established Montana Tech tradition of excellence in education, the TLC is here to help students achieve their full academic potential. Hopefully, it will be remembered by Tech students as friendly, helpful place that lived up to its "TLC" acronym.

BILIIIJ'S A poor grade. Moody professors. Finals week. It's enough to drive anyone to drink. When life at Tech becomes unbearable, when the workload becomes too heavy, when the end seems nowhere in sight, that's when refuge is needed. And just down Park Street for Tech, refuge is provided. Th Vu-Villa Bar has long provided refuge the Tech students. The blocks-long walk to the long-time Butte tavern is an invigorating uphill and downhill venture in itself. The Vu provides a real oasis at the end of the trail. The bar is owned by Tech boosters Mick and Charlie Delaney, who purchased the tavern from Pete Vucorovich, the bar's namesake, in 1983. Because of zoning, the Vu probably will be the closest thing Tech will ever see to a "campus bar." Mick Delaney is concinced no plans are being laid to build one closer to Tech than the Vu. So, the Vu is essentially Tech's bar, says Delaney, who along with his brother is a member of Tech's President's Club, a booster club whose membership is provided to big-time boosters. Mick Delaney also is a former Tech athletic director who has also done some coaching throughout the state, including Butte, Missoula, Great Falls, and Bozeman. Not long after the Delaneys bought the bar, they decide to open a pizza parlor next to the establishment, especially after the state's drinking age increased from 19 to 21. Delaney says he and his brother wanted to provide service to all of Tech's students, not only those eligible to drink alcohol.
A 78 Vu-Villa
TECH AND
VU-VILLA The pizza palor has proved a boom to the Vu, and is a handy stop-in for collegiate stomachs. The bar also serves some of the best sandwichs to be found in town. Take your pick between 3-inch turkey, ham, roastbeef of pastrami sandwichs, the perfect prerequisite to an afternoon study. For Tech students interested in history, the Vu provides a case study. The building now housing the bar was opened in 1891 as a tavern by the Campana family. The present-day Pizza parlor next door was opened in 1893 as a general store. The Delaney's have a history of their own in the tavernowning business. Years ago, their uncle, Alec Delaney, opened the U&I Club on West Park, just about where Riley's Meat Market is today. Alec Delaney sold the place in 1956. Because of its entrenched history, the Vu is something to all Butte people. By day, the Delaneys take in the lunch crowd, who are canny to the first that the Vu provides great food at terrific prices. In the afternoon, the place turns into the neighborhood bar it has always been. By late afternoon and night, the Tech crowd starts filtering in. By now, Butte folk know to stay out of the Vu on the weekends. That is the time the bar is Tech's. and Tech's only. "We have very little trouble wiht the kids," Delaney says. "They respect us, and we respect them. Things work out real well." Story by Karen Sullivan

What a difference a year makes. Just ask Montana Tech head football Coach Bob Green. Twelve months prior, Green had stepped in as the Oredigger new coach inheriting a grid program that had managed only one victory in each of the past three seasons. The highly heralded Jamestown Jimmies from North Dakota would be his first test and even the staunchest Oredigger fan had difficulty remembering the last time Montana Tech won an opener. The Orediggers won and in a nutshell, Oredigger football is fun again. Forty-one lettermen and 20 red-
84 Football
shirts from '87 form the heart of this year's roster. The diggers were bigger, stronger, and deeper than last year. They still lack a large number of fast players though. Green, the second year coach, was awarded the coach of the year after directing this years squad to a 7-3 record. "It's a tribute to our players and assistant coaches, we had great leadership from our upperclassmen and a very hard working squad." This year saw a total of 49 players letter. Keep up the good work Oredigger Football Players.

This years Lady Oredigger Volleyball team was no exception to Montana Techs winning tradition. Four starters returned to the Montana Tech lineup, seniors, Rona Dickson, Lisa Tade, and Suzy Underbrink, and junior Jenni Miskimins. Vying for the vacated spots were junior transfer Kelly Galloway, senior Sylvie Adam, and sophomores Valerie Clark and Adel Johnson, along with seven newcomers who certainly worked hard to make this winning team. The Diggers started out winning the Frontier Conference in a battle with Western Montana College and then went on to win the District 12 title from colleges of North Dakota, South Dakota and other Montana teams. The last home matchup for the
Diggers was the Bi-District playoff game against Doane College of Nebraska, Doane being ranked in the top 15 of the United States. Next it was on to Nationals. There were pools of five teams and the luck of the draw put our girls with four of the top teams in the Nation, and the Diggers ended the season tied for 9th in the nation. Their record was an awesome 31 wins and only a losses. There were two players named the All American Scholar Athlete, Jenni Miskimins and Kelly Galloway both engineering majors. Rona Dickson was named 2nd team All American.

Butte is the ONLY place to be for St. Pa tricks Day; people come in bus loads from miles around. It has been estimated that the population in Butte doubles during this funfilled weekend. Drinking, of course, is the major event, and most people start early; most start the night before. As tradition would have it, at 12:00 p.m. everyone ventures out to watch the famous parade led by Tony the Trader. The famous M&M bar and Delaney's Vu Villa seem to be everyone's favorite, although it would be hard to find an empty bar on this Irish holiday! In any given bar, it usually takes about a half an hour to walk in one door and out the other, since every 1 O minutes is interrupted by someone
holding up their drink and yelling AHAHAHAHAHAHAH. For most of the day and night, the bars and streets are packed with people buying and drinking green beer. Corn beef and cabbage, a famous Irish dish, is on special in every restaurant you enter; the air is filled with its aroma. Walking from bar to bar, you meet people you've never seen and very rarely see the same person twice. Live music is usually included in every bar and dancing adds to the fun. St. Pa tricks Day is one of the best holidays to just relax and have fun; no town celebrates like Butte does. Text by: Mary Deppel

I 102 M-Day
M-Day, was this the last one? All traditions must end at some point in time. The tradition of M-Day appears to have died. Totalitarian persons in charge of the event have finally sucked the blood out of M· Day using the excuse of liability for drunken college students. Despite all this, the event this year went as expected. Usually M-Oay is for venting some pent up emotions and extra steam before tackling finals Week. This year, numerous games and food galore Were to be present. Pancakes, roast pig, and beer Were on the menu. As usual, the weather didn't cooperate with it threatening to rain all day. For incoming freshmen and returning students, if You missed M-Day 1989, you missed M-Day forever.

The Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology (until 1965 the Montana School of Mines) is one of six units comprising the Montana University System. Although the necessary legislation was passed in 1893, the actual construction of the first building was not begun until 1896. The college opened its doors on September 11, 1900 and graduated its first class in June, 1903. The Bureau of Mines and Geology was added to the college as a research and public service department in 1919. In the past decade, the college has expanded its traditional offerings in various phases of mineral engineering to include degree programs in environmental, engineering, occupational safety and health, mathematics, chemistry, geochemistry, society and technology, computer science, and business administration. Since its founding, the college has gained a world-wide reputation for its graduates, who have contributed significantly to the mineral industries. Morever, the college has offered broad education opportunities to the citizens of Butte and surrounding areas.
Academic costume for official functions follows a long established tradition. The Bachelor's gown is plain with long pointed sleeves. The Master's gown has long closed sleeves with the arm projecting through a slit at the elbow. The Doctorate gown has round, bell-shaped sleeves. The hood, which is worn down the back, was originally a receptacle for books. manuscripts and food. The velvet facing on the hood represents the field of knowledge in which the degree Is taken: science by golden yellow; engineering by orange: arts, letters and humanities by white; education by light blue; philosophy by dark blue. Just a word of thanks to all of the support staff. I had a really good crew of people taking the class this year. You know who are but thanks anyway. Dan the man from 'South Kackalackie' pulled through in time and printed all the pictures 1n this book. Mike Waish sold hordes of ads to keep the finances up to par. Jackie Schwartz created all the ad copy using the Technocrat Macintosh computer. Thanks Technocrat. you guys are swell. Don Miller, our advisor, was always there -i n time of question. Enough of all this mushy thank-you stuff.
Tough luck, Bruce.
You may have noticed the book has less pages than previous years, about 60 pages. Well, printing a full color book costs lots of money. so we tried to decrease quantity and increase quality. Almost all the pictures were produced in-house. Our color darkroom has finally come of age two years after its conception. This 1s my second yearbook and probably my last (I have graduated) that I have put together. You may have also noticed that there are no wedding pictures 1n the book. That was a mistake. I must say though, I have had fun doing this. Please remember that this is a student publication. put together by students just like you. We carry 18 to 20 credits also. If I had the time, I would have liked to do some knarly things.
My last words a,e for my predecessor (the current editor as you read this) - GOOD
LUCK.
