DEDICATION Dr. Kenneth N. McLeod is Dean of Academic Affairs at Montana Tech. For one year, until the arrival of President Fred W. DeMoney this past July, McLeod served the college as its acting president. He stepped into the position upon the retirement of Dr. Edwin G. Koch, who was Tech's president for 14 years. The 61-year-old McLeod has been with Montana Tech since 1946. In 195 7 he became chairman of the Department of Chemistry and since 1968 he has been Dean of Academic Affairs. A Butte native, McLeod was educated in local schools, received a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry from Montana State University in 1932 and completed a year of graduate studies at Tech in 1933. In 1934 he transferred to Oregon State University and received his Master of Science Degree in chemistry in 1935. He was awarded his Ph.D. in the same field from Oregon State in 1939. He spent the academic year 1939-40 doing post doctoral research in Chemistry at Oregon State University. From September 1940 through June 1946 Dr. McLeod was on the teaching staff of the Chemistry Department at WiJlamette University, Salem Oregon. McLeod has a daughter, Barbara Jean olte, who lives in Billings and a son, Kenneth, who is a student at Montana State University.
Kenneth N. McLeod, PhD Acting President, 1971-1972

AIR EDITORIAL
July 14, 1972
IN EVERY COMMUNITY THERE ARE COMPLAINERS ... THERE ARE LEADERS ... THERE ARE SITTERS AND THERE ARE DOERS. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD THIS AFTERNOON AT TWO O'CLOCK FOR RAY HOWE ... HE WAS A DOER AS FAR AS BUTTE IS CONCERNED. KBOW DOES NOT ORDINARILY RUN EULOGIES, BUT TODAY WE THINK THESE COMMENTS ARE APPROPRIATE. RAY WAS A RESIDENT OF THIS COMMUNITY FOR THE PAST 35 YEARS. HE WAS THE VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF CHRISTIE TRANSFER AND STORAGE AND A RECOGNIZED LEADER IN ms FIELD OF MOVING AND TRANSPORTATION. BUT WE WOULD LIKE TO TOUCH ON HIS COMMUNITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS. HE WAS SECRETARY OF THE MONTANA TECH ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS AND WAS ONE OF THOSE PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ITS GROWTH AND THE ROLE OF LEADERSHIP THE ORGANIZATION HAS PLAYED IN THE ADVANCEMENT OF TECH. HE WAS SECRETARY TREASURER OF THE PAUL CLARK HOME ... THAT LITILE KNOWN BUT WONDERFUL CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION ON THE WEST SIDE WHICH HAS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT PART IN THE LIVES OF MANY UNFORTUNATES. HE CONTINUALLY WORKED FOR THE ELKS SCHOLARSHIP FUND, THE EXCHANGE CLUB, THE METHODIST CHURCH AND THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. RAY DID NOT BELONG TO AN ORGANIZATION JUST TO SAY HE WAS A MEMBER. IN EVERY GROUP HE WAS A QUIET, LIKEABLE, SELF AFFACING WORKER WHO DID HIS JOB AND MORE. RAY, AS A MEMBER OF THE BUTTE EXCHANGE CLUB, WAS ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF THE WORLD MUSEUM OF MINING. FROM A HUMBLE BEGINNING 12 YEARS AGO THE MUSEUM HAS GROWN INTO ONE OF THE LARGEST OF ITS KIND IN THE UNITED STA TES AND IS CERTAINLY ONE OF BUTTE'S MOST INTERESTING ATTRACTIONS. THE MUSEUM HAS BEEN A LABOR OF LOVE FOR RAY HOWE. HE, ALONG WITH DAVE JOHNS SPENT HOURS, DAYS EVEN WEEKS COLLECTING ITEMS, REFURBISHING THEM, AND CONSTRUCTING FACILITIES TO HOUSE THEM. THE THEME AND THE TONE OF THE MUSEUM MAY HAVE BEEN THE INSPIRATION OF OTHERS BUT THE RE SUL TS WERE THE PERSPIRATION OF RAY HOWE. HE AND DAVE JOHNS, ON MAY 4TH WERE PRESENTED WITH THE BUTTE ROTARY CLUB'S GOOD CITIZEN AWARD IN RECOGNITION OF THEIR EFFORTS. BECAUSE HE WAS A DOER, BUTTE IS A RICHER COMMUNITY BECAUSE OF RAY HOWE. HIS HUMBLE DEEDS ARE PERPETUATED IN THE MINDS OF ms CONTEMPORARIES AND HIS PHYSICAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS SUCH AS THE MUSEUM, WILL BE CARRIED ON FOR OTHERS TO ENJOY IN THE FUTURE. AND FINALLY BECAUSE THIS QUIET HUMBLE MAN WAS A DOER ... BUTTE IS A POORER COMMUNITY TODAY BECAUSE OF THIS LOSS.
"Shag" Miller, President Radio Station KBOW Butte, Montana

Early in the morning workers gathered. Each class was assigned a specific task to compete for a trophy.
.
With the work of the students on M- Day, the campus was once again clean. In order to eat the free meal each student had to work for two hours . The idea of meal tickets and of spe cifically assigned tasks worked well in a highly successful M-Day.
Sophomores cleaned up the campus.
Freshmen planted trees.
Juniors painted the and themselves and Seniors sup rvis d. Som , cleaned up the tennis courts.

M-DAY 1972
After the clean up, festivities began with lunch. The lunch was sponsored by the Copper Guards, Sophomore Men's organiza tion and was highly successful.
Crowds sat everywhere to eat the hot dog and hamburger lunch, with all the trimmings.
More sat beneath the shade of the trees to get a little bit of the coolness on the hot afternoon of M Day 1972.
97
After lunch, the first scheduled event' was egg dropping from atop the gym building, some splattered, some thudded, some bounced, and about half survived. Next came Kangaroo Court, with the seniors indicting some of their "favorite" people. The honorable Greg Sheridan sat as magistrate with the jury of graduating seniors behind him to grant decisions on the accused.
Traditional voting for student offices brought out the largest vote ever. In a run off election John McCarthy was elected student body president.
The old "cream pie in the face" gambit was one of the favorites of the court and several students and professors were treated as these two were.

ill.
Next to come were the tug-of-wars and the greased pig chase. Valiant troops went to the field where the mud - hole had been readied by many people who had previously been thrown in. the perfect execution of a back dive into a mud-hole
backfloating demonstrated
Three tugs-of-war ensued. Nobody won. Everybody was soon drenched with mud, lime, and beer.

DON HEATER-# 44 The Making of a PRO HEATER HAS PUT THE "HEAT" ON THE OPPONENTS OF THE MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS FOOTBALL TEAM FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS. The MONTANA STANDARD, Sunday, November 8, 1970 Somewhere, someone has said "nice guys don't finish first. " But, leave it to a Montana native to prove the old adage wrong! Fashioned from the tough Montana material in the same manner of those men of the West who caused Charley Russell to move out and make the "Big Sky Country" his home, Don Heater didn't just happen over night. He set out at a mighty early age to fill some mighty big boots. He is not one to sit back and let others lead. An active competitor all of his life, he has shown a deep abiding appreciation of good clean competition. Though we may never pass this way again, we have gained in stature by your brief presence. Best wishes for your future, Don, from all of Montana Tech and your many friends!

WITH DEEPEST APPRECIATION
TO MR. CHARLES L. (CHARLIE) HERNDON
THE 1973 MAGMA Yearbook staff wishes to express our appreciation to "Charlie" for his long hours in putting together and redoing this annual. Without his devotion, the 1972 MAGMA would never have gone to press. A man with his devotion and love for Montana Tech certainly deserves more than a "Thank You" from the faculty, staff, and students at Montana Tech, but we hop that it will do. Th 197 3 taff hopes that Charlie's love and devotion hold out long enough to send the 1973 annual to press in MARCH.

"MAKE MINE STRAIGHT"
A MINER'S ODE TO BUTTE There's a town where the talk is of mining, Of "high grade" and "first class" and such; Where the clouds have a red copper lining And sky and mountains touch. It's a city that's proud in its dreaming, Where friendship is lasting and true, Where, spite of carousing and scheming, The greeting's "How are yuh?" not "Who?" Some think Butte is ugly from toiling, And mutter, "She's barren and gray" Why, her beauty's so warm it's just boiling In its picturesque, western way. Now the job of digging for copper Is "he-stuff" -and that calls for sand; The cowards most all come a cropper, It's "guts" that we understand! Aglow in a bow 1 cut from granite, 'Mid hills that are ages old, The dudes and the prudes may pan itBut we know that her heart's all gold. So here's to Butte and her miners, To copper and copper's thrill; To hell with the quitters and whiner s, A toast to the Richest Hill! Great Shifter, we ask you to find us, When the knocking-off whistles toot, A cool place- the "hot box" behind usIn a Heaven that's equal to Butte! -Steve Hogan
