THE MUSEUM

There are more than minerals in the Mineral Museum of Montana Tech. lester Zeihen, Adjunct Curator of the Mu• seum, is an asset who can be considered a rare gem. Zeihen has had a lone association with the school and the Museum.

,;

Zeihan received his B.S. in geological engineering (1935) and his M.S., also in ceolorical enrineerinc, (1937) from Tech. After cradualion Zeihen went lo work for the Anaconda Copper Mininf Company (ACM) for a 42 year career. From 1938 lo 1952 Zeihen worked for ACM in Chile where his three daughters, Marilyn, Nancy, and Donna were born. Zeihen returned lo Butte in 1952 and conliooed to work for AMC until the company's closure In 1979. (Zeihen's son Gree was born in Butte.) After that time Zeihen j<,ine<I the staff al Tech where he became the Adjunct Curator of the Museum. He also taught X-ray Diffraction Mineralogy and Ore Microscopy unm he retired from teamng in 1989. Atthoufh the position of AdjW!CI Curator Is only a part-time position, Zeihen spends most of his time al the Museum. He happily gives tours lo Individuals or groups, provides information on mineral identification, and maintains relations with Tech alumni. In the late '950's Zeihen helped start a rroup for young rock hounds called "Pebble Pups." Some of those children have continued their rock colleclinc and even now ask Zeihen's help in identifyinc their new "finds." Zeihen also foond time to conlinlle his research of the minerals al the Black Pine Mine near Philipsburc. This research resulted in the discovery of a previously unlmown mineral in 1983, which Zelhen named PhiNipsburgite. In addition to his other activities, Zeihen Is the Secretary-Treasurer of Montana Tech's Alumni Association, Pmident of the Silver Bow Htsnane Society, and is on the Board of Directors of the Butte Archives and the Butte Sheltered

LIFE Well-known hangouts for traditional students include the Vu Villa, Brews Billiards, and the Plaza. Many people enjoy having o night out at any of the loco/ bars. These places ore quite pocked on Friday and Saturday night. The students dance, party, fight, and drink the night away. Sometimes these students get into trouble with the cops and you see their name in the paper soon afterwords. At the moll, students con spend their precious money in a variety of ways. For instance, you con toke o dote to the latest movie at the Plaza 6 Theater, or You con spend hours of o time ploying Video games at Alladin's Castle. OR You con get your hair permed, styled or cut of Third Dimensions. You con shop for clothes, shoes, jewelry, books, and cords in the Plaza's stores. The moll is in the process of renovating and soon there will be even more stores for students to enjoy. Dorm students usually make rood trips bock to the homesteads for weekends 0nd vocations. They often go in hope of 9etting more money, and maybe even their laundry done. Often dorm residents have wild parties of other peoPles houses (they can't get wild in the dorm/? ho ha/) by Luo Doniel !It:,

The KMSM deejays

20 Years of Service

photo by Sid

by Kelly J. Murphy In 1970, a group of Montana Tech students had a crazy dream to create an educaUonal FM radio staUon on campus. In making their dream a reality, Interested students and faculty soon formed an FM Radio Committee to organize the process and raise money. Financing proved to be the biggest hurdle. But the committee was able to find a feasible solution - each student enrolled at Montana Tech would pay a yearly $5 fee to fund the staUon. The group also received a $20,000 grant from the Model Cities Local Development CorporaUon to help purchase equipment · In early 1972, a "Name our Station· contest was held. KTEK took first prize and the winner was awarded a grand prize of $1 0. Unfortunately, lhose call letters were already In use, so the FCC designated the fellers KMSM. By the end of th '72 school year, the students of Montana Tech were the proud owners of: 2 reel-to-reel tape recorders; 3 turntables; 2 microphones; a cartridge tape machine; a remote control unit; 4 house speakers; a console; 3 amplifiers; 2 tape decks; and a 10 wall transmitter. Tech's radio staUon went on the atr ln 1973 ... three years after the Idea first surfaced. As the staUon evolved, a "special topics" course was offered to provide an academic and practical background for future disc Jockeys. The course was offered through the Physics Department and all 36 members of the class were required lo take the FCC exam to get their 3rd class Radio Operators License. Through the years, physical changes have been made In the studio, music styles have changed drastically and student DJ's have moved on. Today KMSM Is In the process of upgrading the station to 500 watts, fifty times the power they had In 1973. Student fees have again made the transaction possible. Managers at KMSM have saved $10,000 over the past few years. The Associated Students of Montana Tech allocated an additional $3,500 during a special session held this spring. A new and Improved KMSM should be transmitting by the fall of 1994.

A History ofthe Technocrat By BIii Foley

The Technocrat has served lhe students of Montana Tech for over 39 years.

Originally known as lhe MSM AmpUQr.r. lhe first Issue was printed on Feb. 14. 1955. Faculty Advisor Perry F. Roys worked wtth an eclltorlal staff often students In U1e production of the paper. The AmpUfier was a monthly publication when It first went lo print. It eventually came to be published every other week. It was not until the fall of 1983 that the Technocrat finally became a weekly publication. The name was offi .. clally changed to the TcchW!!:.llll In March of 1977 under the direction of CoEditors Dan Snelling and Grant Andersen. and Faculty Advisor Dr. John McGuire. In a front page article, U1e Technocrat Staff listed U1c reason for the name change. They felt that the name Arnp)tQer was not a '\<ery descripUvc or appropriate name for a college newspaper. Also, many people not associated with the school were mistaking the name Amplifier for the radio station. According to Robert Taylor, a former Faculty Advisor of the J\mpllQer, the name Technocrat comes from the Technocracy movementaflerWorld War II. Webster's New World Dictionary defines Technocracy as "government by scientists and engmcers."
