This year the Tech basketball team placed third in the frontier conference, a great showing under new head coach Terry Battenberg and his assistant Jeff Kester. The team also introduced a new and exciting brand of ball, namely "blitz" basketball, which improved their game and made it more enjoyable for the fans.

BOARD OF REGENTS HELENA, MONTANA April 24, 1973 Item 226-504
Retirement of Mr. W. Clifford Laity, Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology
RESOLVED,
That on the occasion of the retirement of Mr. W. Clifford Laity, Chairman of the Division of Arts and Sciences, Head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Professor, the Regents of the Montana State University System wish to express their appreciation for his long and dedicated service to the College, the Montana University System, and the people of the State of Montana.
Mr. Laity is a native of Butte, Montana, an honor graduate of the University of Washington where he received his bachelor's degree in 1937, master's degree in 1938, and where he has done extensive graduate work. After teaching in various Montana high schools, he joined the faculty of Montana Tech in 1943, became head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1955, and Chairman of the Division of Arts and Sciences in 1966. During the time spent on the Montana Tech campus, Mr. Laity has been active on many faculty committees, served two terms as president of the Friends of the Library, and has been very active in the American Association for Engineering Education, having served as national secretary of the Social Sciences. Division in 1956, national vice-president of the English Division in 1957, and president of the English Division in 1958. In 1952, under a Ford Foundation grant, he undertook a survey of humanities-social sciences education in engineering schools from coast to coast. This study was resumed in 1955 when he was chosen as a field worker for a Carnegiefinanced study by ASEE. In addition to his ASEE activities, he is a life member of the Montana Education Association, member of the American Historical Association, Montana Regional Selection Committee for the Teacher Exchange Program, and has served as a judge for Elles Scholarship awards. For his loyalty to students and staff at Montana Tech, his dedication to the advancement and improvement of college services and his high standards of educational quality which have endeared him to many students and faculty over the past 30 years, the Regents of the Montana University System are pleased to confer upon Mr. W. Clifford Laity the rank of Professor Emeritus and wish him many pleasant years in the future. The students of Montana Tech wish to join with the Regents in thanking Mr. Laity for his valued service over the past years and hope that he will have many more happy and healthy years ahead. THANK YOU!!
BOARD OF REGENTS HELENA, MONTANA April 24, 1973 Item 226-505,
Retirement of Mr. Ralph I. Smith, Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology
RESOLVED,
That on the occasion of the retirement of Mr. Ralph I. Smith from Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology, the Regents of the Montana University System wish to express their appreciation for his long and dedicated service to the College and its students.
Mr. Smith was born in Dillon, Montana, received a B.S. from the University of Kansas in 1932, an M.S. from Montana Tech (then Montana School of Mines) in 1933, and did post graduate work at Pennsylvania State College. After several years' experience in the milling and assaying fields and a four-year period of service with the Army Engineers, he joined the staff of Montana Tech in 1946. During his career at Tech he has been active in Glee Club, International Club, and various faculty committees. His work and publications in the field of Montana clays and their potential use in ceramic products provide the only inventory of this State resource. He will be remembered with respect by the many students taught, counseled, and served during the past 27 years and by the faculty members with whom he has worked. For these things, the Regents of the Montana University System are pleased to confer upon Mr. Ralph I. Smith the rank of Professor Emeritus and wish him many pleasant years in his retirement. The students of Montana Tech wish to join with the Regents in thanking Mr. Smith for his valued service over the past years and hope that he will have many more happy and healthy years ahead. THANK YOU!!

The people involved with the campus FM Radio Station have been active throughout the year in preparation for the initial broadcast. In November 1972, the construction permit was issued to the station. This permit authorizes the potential station to build its studios, purchase and test equipment, and then to apply for a license upon completion of the construction period. In December of 1972, the campus station officially became Radio station KMSM-FM, and will operate at the assigned frequency of 91.5 MHz on the FM band of your radio dial. In April 1973, the antenna and transmitter were placed in their permanent locations in the Gymnasium Building. During the month of May, Equipment tests and production of all types of programming were under way. Application to begin program testing, which is in effect permission to begin broadcasting, will be submitted in the not too distant future. The main governing board of KMSM-FM is the Executive Board, consisting primarily of students and a faculty advisor. The members, Dale Williams, Station Manager; Linda Rossmiller, Assistant Station Manager; Richard Flynn, Operations Manager; Kim Bawden, Public Relations Director; Byron Aultmann, Chief Engineer; Ralph Gibbs, Educational Programming Coordinator; Ralph Colvin, Program Director; Wayne O'Brien, Chief Announcer; Dick West, Production Director; John Burke, News Director; and Dr. Jack Goebel, Faculty Advisor. In addition to the Executive Board, an Advisory Board was formed to help with station operation. This Board is composed of members of the faculty, administration, and students of Montana Tech and members of the community as well. Members of this board include the station manager and faculty advisor as well as Lloyd Tysdal and Don Robinson, members of the community John Badovinac and Dr. DeMoney, representatives of the administration; Charles Wideman, faculty; and John Likarish and Doreen Williams, representatives of the students.

for Education,..
6900 students or 71b teachers The $5,000,000 and more we and our coal-mining subsidiary, Western Energy Company, pay in taxes that is earmarked for education would finance a year of schooling for more than 6.900 students or pay the salaries of 716 teachers. It's a big investment but it is money well spent1 For the future of Montana depends on the education of its youth.

A SPECIAL THANKS! It takes many more people than just a staff to turn out a finished annual. This year we were extremely fortunate enough to have the help of many people to finish the MAGMA. A special thanks, therefore, to: DAYLE HARDY and the staff at Williams Camera Shop. Dayle was always around when we needed her especially when problems arose. JOHN BADOVINAC and SHIRLEY OLDS for keeping our finances straight a.nd MAGMA in the black. MARY CRINCH and the staff of the Business Office for putting up with our special delivery, air mail, registered mail problems. BILL HOWELL and the staff of the Information Office for being more than a place to get missed pictures from. They were great friends. MARGE and IRMA for all the help and cooperation they gave us throughout the year. That great staff of the CENTRAL TYPING OFFICE for printing everything and anything we needed. PAT CAMPBELL, our representative from Taylor Publishing Company, who accomplished wonders with an inexperienced staff. CHERYL DEITENBECK, our account executive from Taylor Publishing Company, a person we have never met; but a great person who put up with lots of long distance calls. CHARLES L. HERNDON, our advisor, a modest guy who wasn't always around when you needed him; but who seemed to accomplish miracles at times. We sincerely hope that he is around for many years to come. MAGMA sure can use him. and finally to our staff, we're not modest: Gary Rowe Editor Cayle Lynch Assistant Editor Rand Rafish Business Manager Rochelle O'Keefe Secretary Mark Petroni Ad Salesman Vickie Hughes Layouts Dorothy Hicklin Layouts Robyn LaBreche Layouts Nick Pentilla Photographer Bill Sikes Photographer And a very special thanks to Eleanor Herndon for just being there. Post Script #1 A very special thanks to FRANK KELLY and the staff of the Registrar's Office for supplying us with endless lists of students. Post Script #2 A very special thanks to MRS. LOUISE HUNGERFORD and the staff of the President's Office for answering all the questions we seemed to have no answers for. Post Script #3 Thank you is inadequate for the help that BOB BARTHOLOMEW and CREGG BOSSARD gave us. They will long be remembered by the MAGMA staff.

GEOLOGY COMPLEX UNDER CONSTRUCTION This is the artist's conception of the new geology building now under construction on the northwest corner of the campus. The pictures below show the rapid progress which is being made and hopefully it will be completed sometime in the next year. It will house classrooms, labs, administrative and professor's offices.
