IMPORTANT 2019 CHANGES/UPDATES 1. WRITTEN EVENTS: Written Events have several updates: ■ The Written Event Submission Deadline is now the same as the SCDC Conference Registration Deadline. We are now requiring that all projects be postmarked by January 9, 2019. ■ Written Events will be mailed in hard copy form to the MT DECA PO BOX. DECA Binders are not required. MT DECA will provide pre-paid and addressed USPS Flat Rate Shipping Boxes. ■ Written Events will be evaluated, and we will take the top (8) projects in each event to the state conference. Projects not finalizing in the top (8) will not compete in that event at the State Conference. Advisors will be notified prior to the conference on the top (8) projects. 2. EVENT ALLOWANCE: Students may only participate in (3) Events, and a max of one event per time block. 3. BLOCK SCHEDULE: We have revised and updated the SCDC Block Schedule. We have moved Professional Selling Events to Monday, and have slightly adjusted the times of the blocks. 4. PROFESSIONAL SELLING EVENTS: The Professional Selling Events will now operate similar to a Series Event. Because these events do not require an advance submission, participants will be required to compete in a final round of competition on Tuesday. 5. AWARDS PRESENTATION: We have updated the awards and recognition process to allow for equality among event recognition, while also streamlining our presentation and awards sessions: ■ WRITTEN EVENTS: Top (8) Written Event Finalists will be recognized with white ribbon finalist medallions during the opening session Monday night. During grand awards on Tuesday, all (8) Finalists will report to the stage, where trophies will be awarded for First and Second Place only. ■ SERIES, TEAM DECISION, PRINCIPLES, PROFESSIONAL SELLING: Top (8) Finalists in these events will be recognized during the award session Monday Night with a white ribbon medallion. All finalists will report to the stage during grand awards, where trophies will be awarded for First, Second, and Third Place only. Professional Selling will only recognize first and second place. ■ White Ribbon Medallions will signify a finalist placement among all competitive events. A Trophy will signify ICDC Qualification. 6. REGISTRATION FEES: This year, we are pleased to waive advisor registration, and offer 1/2 off chaperone registration. Attendees using the advisor rate will be assigned proctor work assignments as normal, and must be listed on an official DECA Inc. roster as a DECA Advisor. Chaperones will qualify for the reduced registration for signing up as a “reserve pool” judge, in the event a competitive event judge no-shows or cancels. Chaperones unwilling to be listed and assist will be charged the regular $70 registration rate. 7. GENERAL SESSIONS: We have scheduled the general sessions slightly later in the evening. This year, we will not delay the start of a session due to a chapters late arrival. Sessions will begin on time, as scheduled.

10. RESULTS: To protect the integrity of the awards sessions, finalist results will be made available to chapter advisors after the Monday night Achievement Awards Session. Grand Awards results will be made available at the conclusion of grand awards. 11. DECA FIT: DECA Fit has been canceled. The Montana Army Guard will be present with Virtual Reality Simulators and other activities that aim to better engage the students. 12. STATE OFFICERS: We have reformed the State Officer Application Process. Due to the fact that State Officers are required to be of Junior or Senior status, we are asking that all applications be submitted in advance of the state conference. The application packet will include a cover letter, resume, and a letter of recommendation. Candidates will then be interviewed in person at the State Conference by a panel of OPI Representatives, Corporate Partners, Montana DECA Staff, and Key Stakeholders. The interviews will be scheduled and timed. The committee will work with the State Director and State Officer Coordinator on the selection of the State Officer team. The new State Officer team will be announced at the Grand Awards Session of the State Conference. 13. COMPETITIVE EVENT PREP: This year, in an effort to reduce leak of competitive scenarios leaving the prep room, we will laminate a single copy of the event that will remain at the prep table. For team decision making events, we will have copies for two participants. Competitors will be provided ample blank paper, but will not receive a hard copy of the scenario to write on. We believe this will also reduce our printing cost, and also be mindful of our overall footprint. 14. MEALS: Montana DECA will provide Breakfast and Lunch on Monday. The Alumni Breakfast will remain for Tuesday Morning. Chapters will be responsible for dinner meals. 15. ANNOUNCER: We have contracted a professional announcer for the Awards Sessions. This will help with the delivery/professional and production of the Awards Sessions. 16. EXAM: The Exam will be setup in classroom style instead of rounds. Students will be released at the 30-Minute, 45-Minute, and 60-Minute mark to aid the reduction of disruption, while also encouraging ample time on the exam. The exam will be proctored by MT DECA Staff and Key Volunteers, where scantrons and ID numbers will be checked for accuracy. We will offer a make-up exam once on Monday Morning. 17. EXCEPTIONS: Advisors will be asked to submit in advance special needs for competitors. A students IEP may be required for verification of exception(s). Exceptions that are not documented in advance may not be able to be accommodated. 18. DEADLINES: Deadlines will be adhered to. The published 2018-2019 deadlines are within the proportional timing of previous deadlines, with the exception of the change of written events. We remain cautious that earlier deadlines pose certain challenges to chapters, but aim to protect the deadlines required of us by the hotel and by our judges planning.

COMPETITIVE EVENTS UPDATES The DECA Inc. Board of Directors approved the following changes to DECA’s Competitive Events Program effective 2018-2019. 1.

The Written Entry Presentation Guidelines will no longer include the list of allowable items. Participants in written events may bring any visual aids that adhere to the following guidelines. Only visual aids that can be easily hand carried to the presentation by the actual participant(s) will be permitted. The participants themselves must set up the visuals. Wheeled carts, moving straps or similar items may not be used to bring visuals into the area. Set up time is included in the total presentation time. Participants must furnish their own materials and equipment. No electrical power or internet connection will be supplied. Alternate power sources such as small generators are not allowed. Sound may be used, as long as the volume is kept at a conversational level.

2.

The Written Entry Checklist will be renamed to the Penalty Point Checklist, with a few modifications. The most notable is that written content no longer must be double-spaced, but all written events must be printed single-sided. As a result of deleting the double-spacing requirement, the maximum number of pages changes for all events. All current 30-page projects change to a maximum of 20 pages; all current 5- and 11-page projects change to a maximum of 10 pages.

3.

The Marketing Representative Events, comprised of Advertising Campaign, Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan and Sports and Entertainment Marketing Promotion Plan, will be restructured into the Integrated Marketing Campaign Events. The Integrated Marketing Campaign Events will be comprised of three events/categories: product (IMCP), service (IMCS) and event (IMCE). Participants will create an integrated marketing campaign for a product, service or event of their choice. Participants in the three events will take the marketing career cluster exam.

4.

The evaluation forms for the Professional Selling and Consulting Events will see a few changes in wording for items 8, 11 and 13.

5.

DECA will pilot an online submission for one Chapter Team Event written entry at the International Career Development Conference no later than the 2020 ICDC.

SOCIAL MEDIA CONDUCT & POLICY Social media allows for nearly limitless conversation worldwide – often in real time. We hope that Montana DECA personnel will participate in social media and enjoy its benefits, and we also expect everyone who participates in online commentary to understand and follow these simple but important guidelines. Keep in mind that our overall goal is simple: to participate online in a respectful, relevant manner that protects our reputation and of course follows the letter and spirit of the law. One way you can help to ensure this goal is to avoid being an official Montana DECA spokesperson. We have a specially trained DECA Communications and Public Relations staff who are the only authorized people to speak on Montana DECA’s behalf in online and print conversations. DECA members, including elected officials and staff that choose to participate in conversation where Montana DECA is mentioned or implied will need to adhere to the following guidelines, accurately identify themselves and their role within the organization, and the fact that the things they post are their individual opinion. These guidelines are designed to help you and Montana DECA achieve a more concise, clear, professional image. If one creates or contributes to blogs, wikis, social networks, virtual worlds, or any other kind of Social Media – Twitter, Yelp, Wikipedia, MySpace, Facebook along with thousands more in this realm where Montana DECA is mentioned or implied, here are some guiding principles for all to keep in mind and follow: THINK BEFORE POSTING: No use of social media publication may include confidential Montana DECA material, employment documents, or information that may deem detrimental to our business partners, investors, employees, or stakeholders. IDENTIFY YOURSELF: Remembering that you are a member of Montana DECA is very important. Whether you are an elected official, classified staff member, or student/employee director, your message can directly affect our initiatives and movements. When posting related to Montana DECA or its members you must identify yourself with the proper title and identify that it is your personal/individual opinion. Any specific comments related to a statement from Montana DECA must be made through our trained Public Relations and Communications staff. REMEMBER YOUR WORK RESPONSIBILITIES: Do not let social media interfere with your ability to work with the student body or serve the Montana DECA organization. DON’T MISLEAD OTHERS: Never represent yourself or Montana DECA in a misleading manner. You are solely responsible for the content you post or interact with online. Tell the truth, and don’t reference co-workers, fellow members, business partners, or other stakeholders without their expressed permission. MEANINGFUL & RESPECTFUL COMMENTS: Stick to your experience level. Avoid harsh, misleading remarks on topics which you are not educated on. Remember your comments can directly affect and impact the professional image of all Stakeholders within Montana DECA. LEGAL MATTERS: Never comment on anything related to legal matters. Montana DECA has highly trained legal representation and staff to comment on legal matters dealing with Montana DECA action(s) and policy. All comments made on a legal note should be done after careful consultation with Montana DECA Legal Council and Montana DECA Public Relations and Communications Staff. BE SMART: Take a moment to review your information prior to publishing. Remember that this information is stored and will be around indefinitely. Make sure you are publishing only what you mean. Mean what you say and say what you mean. As Montana DECA elected officials, personnel, staff, and stakeholders, we strive very hard every day to uphold our professional image and unique culture. It is our values that direct the positive movement forward. With strong and enhanced internet communications we will continue to live up to the integrity, dedication, and enthusiasm that our stakeholders expect.
