Welcome Taylor’s Score a Hatrick!

We are delighted to be able to report that this is the third year in a row Taylor Players’ have won the World Indoor Singles Championships, this year congratulating Darren Burnett as the 2014 champion. He follows in the footsteps of Stewart Anderson (2013) and Andy Thomson (2012). An added bonus was the all-Taylor final, with Darren just edging Mervyn King.

Laura Thomas from Wales retained the WBT Mixed Pairs title. We also have a new world champion in our midst and our congratulations must go to Auchinleck teenager Carrie McLean who secured the world Under 25 title – at the tender age of just 15!

In New Zealand, Karen Murphy and England’s Tom Bishop were crowned the World Champion of Champions.

All of our sponsored players have acquitted themselves well with Darren Burnett, Stewart Anderson, Andy Thomson, David Gourlay and Jonathan Ross all retaining their status within the top ranked 16 players who gain automatic entry into all WBT events. We hope this success continues throughout the coming year.

2014 Games With the 20th Games right on our doorstep, Taylor Bowls will be proud to welcome all visitor to our home city of Glasgow from 23rd July to 3rd August.

We are only a stone’s throw from Celtic Football Park where the Opening Ceremony will be held and also the Emirates Arena which will host the Track Cycling and Badminton events. In addition the Athletes Village is within close range. To commemorate this forthcoming event, we have launched a ‘Special Edition’ bowl with a unique emblem (see p14) and opposite.

Aside from the special edition bowl our new colours of bowls for this season are ‘Camouflage’ (see p13) and in our Junior Ace range we have added “apple” and “cosmic” to appeal to children (see p11). We would also like to introduce you to our official ‘Glasgow Rangers’ Football Club bowl (see p15) and exciting novelty “Pink” and “Blue” practice jacks (see p42).

Bowling Club Open Days Sadly recent statistics are showing that along with many other sports, bowling club memberships are falling. Like many unsung heroes around the country, relentless in their efforts to grow our game, we are keen to help reverse this trend. We have produced a leaflet with hints and tips on how to run successful Open Days in your club. (reproduced on p47). This was developed in conjunction with Natalie Melmore, who won the Commonwealth Singles title in Delhi four years ago.

Our aim remains to offer the best service and continue to put something back into our wonderful sport!

CARPET SHORT MAT BOWLING Carpet Bowling in its many forms is rapidly increasing in popularity. In order to satisfy these demands Taylor Bowls manufactures products specifically for the following activities.

SHORT MAT BOWLING The Lignoid is now available in 4 colours, D/Blue & Magenta Speckle, Maroon & Red Speckle, D/Green Speckle and D/Blue Speckle along with our traditional Black. Depending on the position you play and the speed of your carpet our other models are also suitable for Short Mat Bowling.

As the names suggest, both games originated in Scotland and are played as follows: Scottish Carpet Bowling played on low felt covered table 3’ wide and 24’ long using -

FLEXI-DRI WATERPROOFS The Flexi-Dri waterproofs are now available in both grey and blue which are smart, sporty, practical and comfortable.

This wet weather gear is engineered from a technologically advanced, breathable, lightweight, windproof material with a clever elastane influence for greater mobility particularly around the arm and leg areas. With taped seams and stretch mesh lining the waterproofs offer a comfortable, flexible fit for a smooth, non restrictive delivery.

In the long sleeved jacket, blue or mid grey coloured panelling is on the inside of the collar, the side panels and underarm area – traditionally the worst areas for the garments soiling. Piping in the same tone enhances the shoulders, pocket detail and around the zipped area of the trousers.

• Form a recruitment committee, preferably with members who are not already on the committee, as they already have enough on their plate. The more people involved, the less work there is for everyone. Don’t leave it to the ones that always ‘do’ and don’t assume it will just happen.

• What are the objectives of the open day? For example, do you want to attract members of a certain group? Families? Age? Certain occupations? More wo/men? NB Retired people can come during the week. Working people/families can come usually during the evenings or weekends.

• Spread The Word – use multi-media channels and consider the audience you want to attract. E.g., for the older population - newspapers and leaflets in supermarkets/ churches/ surgeries/tennis clubs would be suitable. Try local radio or BBC Spotlight News if it’s within your budget. Social media such as Facebook/Twitter is suitable for a younger audience.

• Banners – advertising the day in a prime location. Ensure a contact number, e-mail address and postal address are on view. Although some people may reply to the advert, be prepared for others to just turn up on the day.

• Meet and Greet – one or two welcoming people acting as hosts can be very inviting.

Stress to existing members that they need to make potential new members feel welcome and avoid ‘cliqueiness’ as it will put people off. First impression are what they will remember!

• Activities - `On the rink’ activities are extremely important and a lot of thought should be put into devising short, fun and engaging sessions. No more than 6 people should be on the a rink at any given time so people aren’t waiting around too long.

Quick introduction to the jack and bowl and allow them to have a go.

Target Mats or points on the green always go down well.

Give people a brief overview so they will want to come back for more and please, please, please... don’t get bogged down with the rules!

• Hook them in - Encourage potential new members back. Give them a flyer with the club’s contact details, planned future activities for potential new members such as coaching activities/friendly games or even beginner’s league.

• Cheap Membership Offer - for the first month or two offer cheap or free membership.

Or you could allow them to pay monthly. It is a tall order to expect people to part with their hard earned cash after 2 hours on the green. If you recruit them, they will contribute in other ways with rink fees and bar money, etc.

• Keep Them - encourage new members to learn the game properly through a coaching programme. Leaving new players to their own devices can mean they don’t reach their full potential, leading to disinterest and giving up playing!
