about

august strindberg If experimenting were a life’s occupation, August Strindberg would have been the ultimate professional. Born in Sweden in 1849, Strindberg wrote more than 60 plays, as well as works of fiction and non-fiction. He dabbled in alchemy, thought of becoming a doctor, was intrigued by photography, continually fell in love and was always striving to learn something new. Strindberg’s childhood was not an easy one. He was raised poor and his mother died when he was 13. Strindberg’s father married the governess less than a year after his mother’s death. As soon as young August graduated from school, he enrolled at Uppsala University and moved away from home.

In 1875, Strindberg met Siri von Essen, an aspiring actress married to Baron Wrangel. When Strindberg set his mind to something, he became extremely determined, and he set his mind on Siri. Siri was acting at the New Theatre in Stockholm at the time. Eventually, she left her husband and married Strindberg in 1877. However, times were not easy for the couple. In the early part of 1879, Strindberg declared bankruptcy. His

The playwright’s first major play, Master Olof, was soundly rejected by the Royal Theatre in Stockholm, but in 1881, when Strindberg was 32, it premiered at the New Theatre in Stockholm. The staging at the New Theatre was a taste of vindication for the playwright, as the New Theatre, too, had previously rejected the play, inspiring Strindberg to set his mind to rewrites. Once Strindberg started writing, he did not stop. He wrote for newspapers and penned historical dramas, one of which was staged at the Royal Theatre and starred his wife. He also published works of fiction, such as The Red Room and Getting Married. Published in 1884, Getting Married stirred up the masses. Strindberg’s publisher was taken to court over the blasphemous nature of the work – the collection of short stories presented women as equals. The playwright took his publisher’s place in the courtroom and was acquitted, but the case had caught the attention of the youth of Sweden, making Strindberg quite popular amongst the younger crowd. Eventually, Siri and Strindberg would part ways, and the playwright would go on to marry twice more – to Frida Uhl and Harriet Bosse, 23 and 29 years his junior, respectively. In 1912, The Father was the first of Strindberg’s plays to be staged in the United States. Shortly after, on May 14, 1912, Strindberg died at the age of 63. He had suffered from pneumonia and a stomach disease. Strindberg was always trying something new, whether it was highlighting the hypocrisy of gender roles in his society or using colloquial speech in historical dramas. He challenged the conventions of his day, and left his mark on modern theatre.

As a student, Strindberg began to experiment. He worked in a chemist’s shop, which inspired him to try medical school. He worked as a substitute teacher and as an extra in the theatre. After failing his medical school entrance exam in 1869, he left school altogether. However, the desire to learn could not keep him away, and he re-enrolled in 1870 to study aesthetics and modern languages. It was around this time that he seriously began to write. His play The Outlaw opened at the Royal Theatre in October 1871. The reviews left something to be desired, but King Charles XV liked what he saw in the young playwright and gave Strindberg 200 riksdaler to help pay for his studies. However, in 1872, Strindberg left university for good, without graduating.

novel, The Red Room, a satirical look at his society, was published in November of the same year, and it brought him success at last. Siri and Strindberg welcomed their first child, Karin, in 1880, and their second, Greta, was born in 1881. It seemed things were finally looking up for the Strindbergs.

Madman, Misogynist or genius? Introducing August Strindberg

King’s Head Pub and Eatery

wed jan 19 7:00pm

120 King Street Strindberg was an intense, brilliant, but flawed artist. He wrote short stories, novels, poetry and, of course, many plays. He had tempestuous relationships with friends and enemies alike, not to mention his three wives. He alienated the Swedish establishment with his attacks on the rigid conservatism of the day, yet ended up a hero and an icon of Swedish literature. He brought a psychological depth and an emotional intensity to his plays that foreshadowed our modern cinema and theatre. Strindberg’s work is intensely personal and draws on his own passions, obsessions and disappointments. Over the course of 59 plays, he wrote in a variety of styles from historical drama to expressionist dream plays. John Bluethner will examine his life and work with reference to various plays in the festival to help you appreciate Strindberg’s importance as a theatre artist. John Bluethner is playing Gustav in At Home Theatre Company’s production of Creditors. He is an actor, director, translator and professor of English. He has appeared at MTC, Theatre Calgary, Stage West, the Stratford Festival and the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. He has also acted and directed in five Master Playwright Festivals. He is a full-time professor at the École technique et professionnelle at Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface.

Patrick Marber (MTC Warehouse’s Closer) transplants August Strindberg’s once-scandalous play to the English countryside on the night of the Labour Party’s landslide victory in 1945. As revellers celebrate, Miss Julie engages in a forbidden flirtation with her father’s chauffeur, John. Seduced by her manipulations and driven by his own ambition, John lays bare long-held feelings for the reckless temptress. Their affair escalates into a volatile power struggle that leaves destruction in its wake. Director | John Bourgeois Cast | Sarah Constible, Bethany Jillard, Peter Mooney

The Big Gravel Sifter Adapted by Jason Hooper One Trunk collective Exchange Community Church 75 Albert Street www.onetrunk.blogspot.com

Originally a short story by Strindberg, The Big Gravel Sifter is the tale of a family’s piano abandoned to the sea. Its recovery is determined to be too expensive and not worth the investment. The creatures of the sea who discover the piano give it new life as they try to determine what it could be and, in the process, discover music in “the key of X.” For those who live above, the mystery of this strange ocean music speaks the love that unites them, excites the possibility of their imagination and rebels against forces that cannot see beauty beyond utility and profit. Director | Chris Sigurdson composer | Original score composed and performed by Garth Hardy on prepared piano.

the burned house

opus two of the chamber plays translated by seabury quinn, jr. shoestring players Forrest Nickerson Theatre (Manitoba Deaf Centre) 285 Pembina Highway

Painting: Dead City (aka City on the Dead River) by Egon Schiele

What secrets come to light when the dyer’s house is a smoking pile of rubble? Who’s guilty, and of what? Welcome to the Swamp. It’s not exactly a love-in in Strindberg’s strangely comedic The Burned House, especially after a mysterious visitor drops in. With crafted irony, Strindberg reveals the disparity between appearance and reality, and the patterns of deceit that shape our lives. He writes, “We live in a world of illusion and folly from which we must struggle to free ourselves.” It is Strindberg’s search for truth and accountability that madly propels The Burned House. creditors A tragicomedy at home theatre company Actors Training Centre of Manitoba 502-62 Albert Street http://athometheatre.shawwebspace.ca/

A charismatic stranger, a jealous, insecure husband and a confident, flirtatious wife form a toxic triangle of love, revenge and despair. At a seaside resort, a painter, Adolph, has reached a crisis in his art and in his marriage. The suave Gustav offers to help him regain the upper hand in both. Adolph’s wife, Tekla, learns, to her dismay, that there are emotional debts to be paid as the three strip each other bare.

Creditors is a tightly written chess game with elegant, witty dialogue that makes the play a gem of sophisticated black comedy. A contemporary adaptation illuminates Strindberg’s thoroughly modern take on the battle of the sexes. Director | Nancy Drake Cast | Susanna Portnoy, John Bluethner, Andrew Cecon

a dream play Adapted by Caryl Churchill black hole theatre company Gas Station Arts Centre 445 River Avenue, corner of River Avenue & Osborne Street www.bhtc.ca

A Dream Play is Strindberg’s expressionist masterpiece, one of his most important and imaginative works, and his own favourite. The gods send their daughter Agnes to earth to seek the reasons for mankind’s sorrow, and she encounters a procession of hopeless romantics, thwarted saints and twisted grotesques. Like Strindberg, we want to re-create the experience of vivid dreaming and nightmare, and we do so with puppets, mutant hybrids (half human, half puppet), imagistic magic, dance, an original electronic musical score and for a script, the evocative adaptation Caryl Churchill wrote for the National Theatre of Great Britain in 2005. Thus, we offer a play by this year’s Master Playwright re-envisioned by last year’s Master Playwright.

The Ghost Sonata, written by August Strindberg in 1907, is a chamber play exploring early forms of expressionism and surrealism. The play examines topics that society usually wants to avoid, including the reality of death in life, psychological suicide and the misery caused by human relationships. It is a bleak yet absurdly humorous look at society. Strindberg creates a world in which ghosts walk in broad daylight, a beautiful woman is transformed into a mummy and lives in the closet, and the household cook sucks all the nourishment out of the food like a vampire. Director | Hope McIntyre Cast | University of Winnipeg Performance Students and guest artist Kevin Anderson

Strindberg met actress Harriet Bosse when she was 22 and he 52. She became his muse and third wife, but they parted within a year. Her life had barely begun, but he wished to rule it from the vantage point of 30 years of bitter experience. Yet something drew her back, first in body, then only in spirit. She understood their love could only flourish from a safe distance. Nevertheless, he wrote roles for Harriet that allowed her to blossom on stage: Indra’s daughter in The Dream Play, Judith in The Dance of Death and Eleonora in Easter. In this solo drama, Harriet paints a vivid portrait of their lives together and relives the roles he created for her.

Miss Julie at the Gates shows us what might have happened had Strindberg come to Winnipeg to present Miss Julie with his company of actors, nursemaids, etc. in tow. Invited by a newly rich Winnipeg couple, who had seen a performance of Miss Julie while doing the grand European tour, Strindberg and company find themselves in what could be called a culture clash. Winnipeg playwright Ross McMillan examines what the audience expects, and what artists expect in return. Director | Ross McMillan

Two un-saintly moralists go head-to-head in this psychological game of chess. Mr. Y and Mr. X are stuck in an isolated mission in early 20th century Africa. One is a seemingly innocent traveller, the other a self-righteous anthropologist. Each is guarding a secret and sordid past. Both are guilty, yet both claim the moral higher ground in an intellectual wrestling match of the finest Scandinavian kind. And it’s funny. Seriously. Tom Hendry Theatre at the MTC Warehouse 140 Rupert Avenue at Lily Street The Pelican is another of Strindberg’s domestic tragedies. A pelican is reputed to give its own blood to nourish its young. At the heart of Strindberg’s play is a vampire-mother who sustains herself at the expense of her children’s well-being. Among her many despicable acts, she manipulates her lover into marrying her daughter by promising him a bogus inheritance. We then see how her son and daughter exact their revenge, with the son eventually setting fire to the family home. While the mother leaps from a balcony to escape, her children choose to die in the apocalyptic blaze rather than continue with their hellish existence. When given a reading in Toronto in 2006, the play was found “compelling … revealing darkly fascinating human motivations.” Director | Margaret Groome

playing with fire Westwood Collegiate Park Theatre 698 Osborne Street Playing with Fire, premiered in 1893, was based on an unfortunate visit Strindberg made to an old friend the previous summer. This semibiographical play is considered to be his spiteful account of a perceived betrayal. The play focuses on a well-to-do family and their adulterous relationships with one another. Each character tries to fulfill their personal desire, leading to more than just a love triangle. The action of the play is set in the late 1920s, on the veranda of Knut and Kerstin’s seemingly quiet house. This production will feature a cast of six, allowing for an intimate and unique experience. Directors | Christopher Kshyk, Erin Laforet

play strindberg by Friedrich durrenmatt the adriana theatre collective Colin Jackson Studio Theatre, Prairie Theatre Exchange 3rd Floor, Portage Place, 393 Portage Avenue Where does tragedy end and comedy begin? Play Strindberg, by Friedrich Durrenmatt, invites you to wonder. The Swiss master playwright takes the tragic vision of marriage in Strindberg’s Dance of Death and subjects it to a critically comic eye. Strindberg’s island fortress becomes a stage for actors to corner each other and, in Durrenmatt’s hands, Strindberg’s operatic arias are transformed into explosive and witty explorations of the savage games couples play, particularly when a volatile figure appears from their shadowy past. Marriage becomes a 12-round boxing match in which accusations, catatonic fits and piano improvisations are the pugilists’ arsenal. The knockout is decisive. And the outcome is Strindberg without tears and with lots of laughter. Director | Robert Smith
