MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Rock and roll was the Berlin wall of my parents’ house, the dividing line between stoic, dutiful parents, and their wild, joyful teenagers. My mother and father distrusted every note and lyric that emanated from our transistor radios, and retreated to the furthest corners of the house when we started buying 45’s to play on their stereo. My sister and I grew our hair long, and gyrated around the house, wailing into invisible microphones.

On days when we thought we’d die if we didn’t hear our new favourite song, we’d call in requests to the deejays, who were like clergy to us in our almost religious Steven Schipper

devotion to the music. We had no idea then that those same deejays were being bribed to play certain songs,

or that artists weren’t always paid fairly, or that studios like Sun Records were just creative waystations on the road to selling out. We never imagined that something so right could be built on something so wrong.

Million Dollar Quartet perfectly captures that moment when the first generation of rock artists lost their innocence. Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Sam Phillips and Elvis Presley are all trying to stay true to their musical roots while negotiating the treacherous world of the music business. We look back on all their struggles with hindsight, knowing how every heartbreaking compromise affected their lives and their careers.

Still, there’s the music, the raucous soundtrack of our lives and theirs. For every signed-on-thedotted-line deal with the devil, there’s a timeless song that still makes us swoon like teenagers.

Listen to these classic tunes, and forget about the million-dollar pricetag of the title. These men may have been bought and sold, but their legacy was built on creativity, craft, and their knack for turning matters of the heart into universal anthems for generations of music lovers.

On January 3, 1950, Memphis Recording Service opened its doors at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. Owner Sam Phillips, a former radio deejay, offered to record local singers under the slogan “We record anything, anywhere, anytime.” In a period of rigorously restrictive segregation in the American South, Phillips was a visionary who saw no colour barriers in music. His first recordings were blues sessions featuring African-American artists such as B.B. King and Howlin’ Wolf.

In 1952, Phillips created his own record label, Sun Records. One year later, an 18-year-old truck driver came to

the studio to make a recording for his mother. Although initially unimpressed with the young Elvis Presley, Phillips eventually called him in to record a demo at his studio. When Presley began singing an impromptu blues number by Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup entitled “That’s All Right (Mama)”, Phillips found what he later termed “the lightning in a bottle” – a good-looking white boy who could sing African-American music. The song became Presley’s debut single for Sun Records in July 1954, launching both his and Phillips’ careers.

As Presley’s fame spread, Phillips’ recording studio became a mecca for

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET young artists seeking to emulate his success. One of those was the son of a sharecropper from Madison County, Tennessee, named Carl Perkins who, unlike Presley, wrote his own songs.

In October 1954, Phillips signed Perkins to Sun Records. At the time, many speculated that Perkins would eclipse Presley’s success. Perkins’ third Sun single, his own composition entitled “Blue Suede Shoes,” released in December 1955, became Sun Records’ first million-selling single.

Paul McCartney once stated that there would have been no Beatles without Carl Perkins.

Faced with mounting debts and realizing that Sun Records wasn’t big enough to break Presley beyond the South, Phillips sold Presley’s recording contract to RCA Victor in December 1955 for an unprecedented $35,000. Presley’s debut RCA single, “Heartbreak Hotel,” released in January 1956, topped the national Billboard charts for seven weeks, earning Presley his first gold record.

Following his discharge from the US Air Force where he had been stationed in Germany, Johnny Cash settled in Memphis in 1954. He took a day job selling appliances while focusing on a

future career in music. Hooking up with friends Luther Perkins on guitar and bass player Marshall Grant, dubbed the Tennessee Two, Cash approached Phillips at Sun Records for an audition in which they performed gospel material.

Phillips told him to come back with a more rockabilly sound before signing him. Cash’s second Sun single, his signature song “I Walk the Line,” turned him into a star.

Hailing from Ferriday, Louisiana, piano player Jerry Lee Lewis was destined to become a preacher alongside his cousin Jimmy Swaggart when he was expelled from the Southwest Bible Institute. Lewis then headed to Sun Records in November 1956 looking to record. In Phillips’ absence, producer Jack Clement was impressed enough to recommend his boss sign the flamboyant performer. Lewis’ second Sun single, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On,” stormed the charts, announcing the arrival of an exciting new talent.

Presley, Perkins, Cash and Lewis owed their careers to Sam Phillips and would go on to reshape popular music as we know it. For his part, Phillips would earn the title as the man who invented rock ’n’ roll.

Born in England, Colin Escott lives near Nashville, Tennessee. He is the author of Good Rockin’ Tonight: Sun Records and the Birth of Rock ’n’ Roll, the first in-depth account of the Sun Records story. His book Hank Williams – The Biography has been adapted into the movie I Saw the Light, starring Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen. His multi-CD box set, The Complete Hank Williams, won a Grammy, and another of his productions, B.B. King – King of the Blues, was nominated for a Grammy.

Million Dollar Quartet received three Tony nominations, including Best Book and Best Musical. Escott was part of the writing/producing team adapting the show for a multi-part/ multi-season run on CMT/Viacom. The first season airs in November-December 2016.

We’ve now reached the halfway point of a fantastic season you helped make possible.

So far, you’ve watched a young man struggle to make sense of the world in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and you’ve caught a glimpse of the relationship between the Queen and her Prime Ministers in The Audience. And now you’re being entertained by some of the greatest songs in rock ’n’ roll history with Million Dollar Quartet.

Royal MTC works hard to share a variety of stories every season and your attendance helps create excitement about these shows.

But did you know the price of your ticket doesn’t entirely cover the cost of producing live theatre?

In November and December, you were asked to give a year-end tax-deductible donation to Royal MTC. And you responded generously.

We couldn’t be more thankful! Your donations give us the ability to create great live theatre.

Now, as we start a new calendar year, we’d like you to think about supporting the theatre by becoming a monthly donor. Monthly gifts not only maximize the impact of your donation but are an easy and convenient way to support the work of Royal MTC. As our way 38

of saying thank you, you’ll be entered into monthly draws for various prizes between September and May. By giving just $7.50 a month, you’ll help purchase 1 gallon of the more than 100 gallons of scenic paint used each year on our stages. And $12.50 a month gives ten students the opportunity to enjoy one of our performances through the Theatre for Young Audiences program.

Giving a little every month equals a lot of support for Royal MTC. Consider: • $4.17 per month = $50 a year. That’s less than the cost of buying a newspaper once a week.

• $12.50 per month = $150 a year. Your name will be listed in the Ovation program all year for less than the cost of a coffee and a snack once a week.

• $41.67 per month = $500 a year. That’s equal to buying lunch once a week.

• $83.33 per month = $1000 a year. You’ll join the Director’s Circle and be invited to some of the most intimate donor events we offer. That’s less than the cost of a daily specialty coffee.
