MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF ROYAL MTC We say “I see” when we understand something, as if vision and comprehension are linked. Yet Lady Justice traditionally wears a blindfold, a well-known symbol of impartiality, but a real drag if a lawyer tries to draw her attention to Exhibit A. She also carries a scale, which - in the deep place within us that is still a child - seems more like a see-saw than a method for weighing guilt and innocence. The scales apparently goes back to the Egyptian god Anubis, who weighed a dead person’s heart against the feather of truth. (Presumably no one passed that particular test, as the

Steven Schipper

human heart - even one free of guilt and deception weighs 9 to 12 ounces.)

Yet that see-sawing scale always comes to mind when I think of Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Jurors because the play so believably shifts the jury (and, by extension, the whole audience) from one verdict to another. The playwright also cleverly takes the courtroom out of the courtroom drama and, most importantly, burrows into the hearts of twelve jurors to find their innate sense of justice. Of course, Reginald Rose can’t take full credit for depicting the hearts of the jurors. The actor-lawyers once again bare their hearts onstage, bringing their own humanity to the task of revealing another’s. I say “once again” because one of the actors and three special guests in this production — Gail Asper, Jeff Hirsch, Bryan Klein and Jim McLandress — appeared in our 1990 production of Twelve Angry Jurors, the first MBA event to raise money for our theatre. Even those who weren’t part of that inaugural play have given generously of their time. In all, these 17 cast members alone have performed here 92 times, and that doesn’t count the other 200 MBA members who have generously shared their time and talent with us over the intervening decades, or the thousands of MBA members who’ve bought tickets. The money you’ve raised has helped us create great theatre year-round, and to make that theatre accessible to all Manitobans, regardless of wealth, power or status (kind of like that blind Lady Justice). You have been tipping the scales in our favour for years, and we are indebted to you, not only for your staggering financial contribution, but for your unwavering belief in all that we do. Yours always,

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE MANITOBA BAR ASSOCIATION Twelve Angry Jurors is Reginald Rose’s Emmy Awardwinning drama, as adapted by Sherman Sergel, which follows the intense deliberations of a jury charged with determining the fate of a young man accused of murdering his father. Issues of racial discrimination and the personal circumstances of some of the jurors come out during the deliberations. The jury has to make a decision that carries with it the possibility of condemning the young man to death. The production is also the 25th joint production Brad Regehr

between Royal MTC and the MBA. It was also the first joint production done back in 1990. We even

have original cast members from that co-production! The cast is entirely composed of volunteers who are lawyers and law students. They have dedicated an immense amount of time towards providing you, the audience, with an amazing performance. As a former cast member of Lawyers Play shows, I know how hard they have worked. I would like to thank the Director of Twelve Angry Jurors Heidi Malazdrewich, Executive Producer Chuck McEwen, the Royal MTC/MBA committee members and all the staff at Royal MTC for their continued hard work which makes this event such a success. To date, these joint productions have raised over $1,000,000.00 for Royal MTC. Finally, I want to thank all the corporate sponsors for their generous support of this event and their contribution to the fundraising efforts of Royal MTC. Finally, I thank each of you for attending tonight and supporting Royal MTC by doing so.

ARTISTS Gail Asper Judge (May 6)

Gail is delighted to be joining the cast of Twelve Angry Jurors in a cameo role as the Judge. Gail was lucky enough to have been cast in the original show of Twelve Angry Jurors back in 1990, which was also the inaugural Royal MTC/MBA production. Over the past 27 years, Gail has noticed a distinct deterioration in her memorizing skills and is profoundly glad she only has to remember a few lines in this show and hopes she doesn’t blow it! She has been involved with 11 of the Royal MTC/MBA productions and has been incredibly grateful to work with so many tremendously talented lawyers along with the world-class professionals at Royal MTC. When not treading the boards at Royal MTC, Gail plays the role of President of The Asper Foundation, which spearheaded the creation of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and focuses on Jewish and Israeli causes, human rights, the arts and education. Gail would like to thank her husband Mike and sons, Stephen and Jonathan, for their love and support. By the way, Gail was pregnant with Stephen in the first production of Twelve Angry Jurors and can’t believe her little baby is now 26 years old (just three years younger than Gail was when she was in the show…time sure flies!).

Kalyn Bomback Juror #10

Kaylyn completed a month-long intensive program at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York in August 2016 and continues to train under the instruction of local actor Glenn Odero in his class: The Method at The Studio. Thank you to my mom and dad for everything – for their undying support in the best and worst of times. Also to my colleagues at Gange Collins Holloway who have supported me in becoming the best I can be, both as an actor and a lawyer.

Bill Haight Juror #11

Bill is close friends with Jeff Hirsch and John Harvie. He thinks they are both swell guys and generally fun to be around. So when Bill heard that John and Jeff were both selected to be in this year’s production of the Lawyers Play he dusted off his Latvian accent and auditioned for the role of Juror 11. Bill began his acting career at the tender age of eight when he impressed many a peer with his performance of the lead role in “Disruptive Class Clown”. This role led directly to recurring appearances in “Detention Hall” and “Parent-Teacher Day in Hell”. More recent appearances include One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Odd Couple and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Bill is married to Sofia Goswin and together they are raising three lovely girls (Emma, Freja and Hanna) in the wilds of St. Vital. In addition, Bill also practices some law.

Kalyn is so excited to be joining this amazing cast in her fourth Lawyers Play. Kalyn has been training as an actor for over 20 years and is an active member of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists.

ARTISTS John Harvie Juror #8

Cynthia Hiebert-Simkin Juror #4

After six appearances in the Royal MTC/ MBA Lawyers Play there is still more than a reasonable doubt that John has any talent. Nevertheless he is hopeful that you will be merciful in your judgment of his latest offering. A Partner at Myers Weinberg LLP, John is very grateful for the support of the firm and friends and family who are coming out to see the show this year. Thanks to a great cast, director, stage manager and crew – the past five months have been a real privilege. John is especially thankful to Mary Kate, Helen and Peggy for their love, support and patience.

Twelve Angry Jurors marks the 12th time Cynthia has trod the boards for Royal MTC & MBA. She’s glad it’s a drama because, quite frankly, she was happy not to be up against Gail Asper and Darcia Senft, two incredibly talented singers, for a singing part. She trusts the audience will not confuse her role as a fact-based, authority figure with her real life persona (wait — that might be a good thing). As always, much love and thanks to Simon for putting up with her absences and for running lines with her — such a great guy! Cynthia hangs her shingle at Tradition Law LLP, Estates and Trusts.

ARTISTS Jeff Hirsch

Zilla Jones

Juror #3

Juror #1

Jeff is delighted to be appearing in his ninth Lawyers Play. Previous credits include: Twelve Angry Jurors (1990) - really?; The Caine Mutiny Court Martial (1992); And Then There Were None (1997); R. P. McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (2002); Inherit the Wind (2006); A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2007); Amos Hart in Chicago (2008); The Drowsy Chaperone (2010); and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (2014). Like Juror #3, in real life Jeff is a humourless, bullying, litigation partner at Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP where he is accustomed to forcing his views upon others. He lives in Winnipeg with his wife, Liz Murray, and their son Davis.

Zilla Jones’ previous involvement in Royal MTC/ MBA productions is limited to her hair playing the role of Chutney Windham in Legally Blonde in 2013 (and she was somewhere in there too). This time, all of her is delighted to play the role of Madam Forewoman. In her previous life, Zilla earned her Music degree in Vocal Performance and sang with opera companies in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Orford, Quebec as well as performing at Harbourfront and the rock.paper.sistahz festival in Toronto. She now practices criminal defence and child protection law at Jones Law Office, as well as being a wife, mother to her sons, sitting on various boards, and attempting to write novels and plays as time allows. Love and bless to this incredibly talented cast, director and artistic staff.

Cambrian Credit Union is proud to support this performance of 12 Angry Jurors. Congratulations to all involved in the 2017 Lawyers’ Play!

ARTISTS Tony Kavanagh

Bryan Klein

Juror #9

Judge (May 3)

This is Tony’s first role in the Royal MTC/ MBA annual play. Tony is the winner of an obviously prestigious grade one award for “Active Reading and Drama” (aged 6) and placed Silver at the Cape Town Eisteddfod Junior “Monologue” category (age 9). Not quite an Oscar or Tony award perhaps, but enough to propel him to participate in several school plays. His favourite play was his role as a simple Protean in the slightly naughty A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum (age 12!). However, it was only after a move to England that the world of drama suddenly burst open. It was a rather radical left-wing, former unionised coal miner turned English Literature teacher that brought the theatre and written word alive with frequent student excursions to theatres in London, Birmingham, York etc. to see productions from around the world. As a criminal defence lawyer, and as a former Crown Prosecutor, Tony has seen many juries in action; so how could he pass up the chance to play one now? Enjoy the show!

Peter Kingsley Guard

Peter is thrilled to be returning to his second Royal MTC performance in Twelve Angry Jurors. Even more thrilling is that he doesn’t have to wear a wig this time! When not channeling his inner Sheriff, he is a Senior Manager at Legal Aid Manitoba. Many thanks to the cast and crew who have tirelessly worked to make this production possible. Peter would also like to especially thank his family who have let him take the time to be part of this production.

12

Bryan is Counsel at MLT Aikins LLP. His previous Royal MTC/MBA productions include Guys and Dolls (in which he played Nathan to Gail Asper’s Adelaide), Twelve Angry Jurors, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, You Can’t Take It With You, Cabaret, Gypsy and La Cage Aux Folles. Bryan appeared frequently at the U of M with the Glee Club and Stage Society. His principal roles include performances in Guys and Dolls, Kiss Me, Kate and MTC Children’s Theatre, and in CBC radio drama. At Rainbow Stage he appeared in The Wizard of Oz and in their first production of Fiddler on the Roof. He is married to Susan Halprin and is dad to Baillie and Daniel, Sarry and Julie and Zadie to Lyla Bea and Asher Theo.

Jim McLandress Judge (May 4)

Jim plays The Judge…but only on Thursday. (It’s just a part-time gig.) Fortunately for you it’s a tiny, non-visible role. Jim was in this play when MTC (it was still plain old “MTC” back then) started a Canadian trend by putting lawyers on stage as a fundraiser over 25 years ago. Since then he’s been in far too many of these plays for his own (or anyone else’s) good. But he’s proud to have been part of something that’s raised a whole ton of money for MTC/Royal MTC and the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Thanks to the cast and crew of this year’s show for all of your hard work and thanks to the long-suffering family members who have indulged you every step of the way. Most of all, thanks to all of you in the audience for continuing to support Royal MTC. Without an audience, a play is just a rehearsal. Without you, there’s really no point.

ARTISTS Jody Ostapiw

Victoria Perrie

Juror #12

Juror #7

This is Jody’s first performance in an MBA production. It was part of a pep talk she gave herself to get more involved with the MBA this year. Jody is also a member of the MBA Criminal Law Section Executive, President of the Criminal Defence Lawyers Association of Manitoba and Chair of the Behavioral Health Foundation Board. Jody would like to thank her work family at Smith Corona Van Dongen & Cook for all their support in this and all her extracurricular activites. She would also like to thank her dog Peppermint Patty for being understanding about all the hours spent rehearsing instead of providing belly rubs and cuddles.

Victoria is excited to be a member of the cast for her first time with Twelve Angry Jurors. Finally finished her second year of law school, Victoria is thrilled to grace the Royal MTC stage with senior MBA members and to see Jeff’s performance since she missed it last time — she was busy being born. Victoria has spent the last five years engaging inner city and at-risk youth in theatrical arts education and providing arts-based Indigenous cultural training. When she can’t be found in law school (which, let’s get real, is never), Victoria can be found travelling the world, or spending time with her friends and family.

Heather Wadsworth

Juror #6

Juror #5

This is Sandi’s third appearance in the Lawyers Play (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, La Cage Aux Folles) and her first speaking role as the “honest but dull-witted” Juror #6. She is grateful for the opportunity to work with such talented colleagues and with Heidi, Chuck and the wonderful staff of Royal MTC. Sandi’s appearance would not be possible without the support of her employer, Manitoba Hydro, and the patience, love and encouragement of James, Matthew and Laura.

Steve Scarfone Juror #2

Steve is thrilled to be back on stage “acting” in Twelve Angry Jurors, his seventh such effort and first since 2014 (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying). Steve is lucky to have the love of his family and friends, including his incredible co-parent, Kim Antonio, who not only encouraged Steve’s participation in the show but supported him by caring for their three beautiful children while his weekends and evenings were consumed by rehearsals. Steve would also like to thank his mom and dad for once again making the long trip from Peterborough to see the show…although he suspects Olivia, Michael and Samuel are the real attraction (as they should be).

Heather is honoured to make her debut in the Royal MTC/MBA joint production of Twelve Angry Jurors. Originally from Unionville, Ontario, Heather studied theatre for eight years, first at Unionville H.S. (a performing arts school) and then in the acting program at Dalhousie University, before she pursued a law degree. In addition to practicing family law with the wonderful women of Petersen King Law Corporation, Heather is an avid concert goer, passionate Jets fan, and adventurous traveller. She thanks her amazing family for always encouraging her to chase her dreams and her husband, Matthew, for helping her achieve them.
