MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Three of the greatest playwrights in the English language hang out in the same section of our theatre’s library, because their surnames all start with the letter “S”. William Shakespeare, George Bernard Shaw, and Tom Stoppard live together in our minds not just because of their alphabetic congruence, but because of their shared brilliance.

At their best, they wield language with precision and whimsy, they create characters as complex as we are, and they craft plots that make hours seem no longer than a heartbeat. Most importantly, they make us rethink our lives and our place in the world.

Shakespeare in Love brings together two of these

master playwrights, in Lee Hall’s adaptation of Mark Norman and Tom Stoppard’s screenplay about Shakespeare’s attempt to write a new comedy. As the play opens, Shakespeare struggles with writer’s block, then looks for help to his charismatic rival and mentor Christopher Marlowe. But when a forbidden young woman enters his orbit, she reveals to him the tragic, farcical nature of true love, and changes the course of both his play and his life.

Jovanni Sy (another great “S” playwright) has also written forbidden women and a mentor/rival into his new play Nine Dragons at the Hendry Warehouse. Of course, Sy takes us to 1920s Hong Kong instead of Elizabethan England, and his police detective Tommy Lam struggles to solve a series of grisly murders instead of a tricky couplet. But both Shakespeare in Love and Nine Dragons rise above their respective genres - the romantic comedy and the crime thriller – to explore one of life’s central questions.

Do the circumstances of our birth dictate the course of our lives, or can we transcend race, gender and class to find love, meaningful work, and, perhaps most importantly, justice? The question is no less relevant in our own age than it was in the 1500s or the 1920s. The characters Will Shakespeare and Tommy Lam are heralds from that past, tipping a brass horn to their lips, and proclaiming our shared humanity, our common quest.

The Diary of Anne Frank

It may be difficult to believe that there was— and still is—controversy around The Diary of Anne Frank and its several theatrical manifestations. In 1958, MTC produced Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett’s Broadway adaptation as part of its first season. The script presented a somewhat romanticized Anne, and made the story of hiding from certain death more pointedly universal. Anne and her family could be any oppressed group at any time, not just Jews in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. This early version was approved by Anne’s father, Otto Frank, who had survived Auschwitz and presented the diary to the world.

Respected by critics as a dignified documentation of the diary, the stage adaptation became a theatrical staple, with its inherently powerful subject and attractive heroine.

The controversy was two-fold. First, the downplaying of Anne’s Jewishness was, as American 1

critic Frank Rich put it, “to bleach” her: the adaptors “had betrayed her and the Jewish people by sanitizing the Holocaust.” The other controversy seems difficult to understand today.

Winnipeg Free Press columnist Frank Morriss had to urge people to attend the first MTC production since he was told by several people they didn’t “care for propaganda.” The American State Department had cancelled a proposed European tour because it felt the play would be perceived as propaganda, a move denounced by the most influential New York theatre critic of the era, Brooks Atkinson. The play was nonetheless well received by Winnipeg audiences, with Free Press critic Christopher Dafoe urging no one to miss it: “It isn’t an entertainment—it is a documentary as moving and important as anything we are to see for a long time.” The Goodrich-Hackett adaptation stood the test of time, being produced again

by MTC 20 years later, and by other Winnipeg theatres over the years.

Yet, as time passed and the diary itself became better known, the initial critique of the play remained front and centre.

In 1997, Wendy Kesselman wrote a new stage adaptation that was praised for its more forthright, less romantic approach, bringing the audience closer to the core of the diary. It is truer

to Anne herself, with her burgeoning emotional and sexual feelings. It was also more pointedly Jewish, and how could it not be? Despite Otto Frank’s well-intentioned efforts to make the first version ‘universal’, he may in fact have distanced us from the specific terror which was the daily life in extremis of Anne and the others in the attic. They were hiding because of their Jewish identity. If Anne hadn’t been Jewish, she probably would have survived the war. It reminds us of the gruesome ethnic cleansings of our own era. So the specific becomes the universal. In 2003, MTC produced The Diary with equal success for a third time, with Kesselman’s new adaptation and, in 2014, Royal MTC premiered Alix Sobler’s The Secret Annex, which imagined the fate of the diary if Anne Frank had escaped the Holocaust.

The current controversy revolves around the diary’s limitations. After all, Anne writes about life in the annex only.

There are no words after their capture in August, 1944, making the central horror of the Holocaust incomplete. Fair enough, but prologue leads to understanding as well. As Victoria Barnett of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has put it: “In reading Anne Frank’s diary, we are reminded of our possibility to be good, of our obligation to reawaken a sense of goodness within

ourselves.” The stage adaptations offer a way into studying the Holocaust. Yet, let’s not make The Diary of Anne Frank simply an educational tool. At a time when anti-Semitism isn’t afraid to make itself known, dramatizations of the diary remain essential theatre.

LOVE & MARRIAGE IN THE 16TH CENTURY

Generally speaking, Elizabethan marriages were arranged. Alliances between property owners were made, collectively by family and kin.

Many factors affected these decisions including political patronage and accumulation of wealth. Property and power were the main factors which influenced negotiations for marriage.

The third factor that governed marriage and family structure from the 16th century until the 19th century was the dowry system which was, more or less, a financial transaction. In England, brides were not usually able to provide property in the form of land. (Shakespeare’s mother, Mary Arden, was unusual in that her father had left her, the house near Stratford called Mary Arden’s House.)

Since the bride could not normally provide land, she was expected to bring to the marriage a dowry in the form of a 8

substantial cash sum. This was called a ‘portion’ and went directly to the father of the groom. In return, the father of the groom guaranteed the bride a yearly payment or annuity, called a ‘jointure’ if she survived her husband as a widow.

Under this system, daughters were both a drain on family finances and a tool for making political connections. They were often judged on their potential for breeding healthy children.

In high society the patronage of royalty was, of course, highly valued and the Queen had to approve marriage between nobles. Honour was also important to men and an honourable reputation was gained through such things as military glory, achievement, keeping good faith with people, good background and good marriage conditions. An honourable reputation was sufficiently important for people to fight

duels over. A man’s reputation could be affected by the reputation of the woman to whom he was betrothed or married. A future bride was supposed to be a virgin and a wife to be faithful.

The Sermon of the State of Matrimony from the Elizabethan Church Book of Homilies said “Let women be subject to their husbands as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the woman as Christ is the head of the church.”

In fact many religious moralists of the time opposed arranged marriages on the grounds that they could be used to encourage parents’ covetousness and could lead not only to misery, but also to adultery and crime.

and society’s expectations. Queen Elizabeth I was known as the Virgin Queen but there has always been discussion over her relationship with her ‘favourites’ at court. One of these was the Earl of Essex - Robert Devereux.

We will probably never know the true facts. Shakespeare in Love links the many aspects of the play through the idea of love in life and on stage. In the play Queen Elizabeth sums up the question when she asks, “Can a play show us the very truth and nature of love?”

William Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway in November 1582 and their first child Susanna was born in May 1583.

The poets and dramatists of the period frequently wrote of more romantic love. Shakespeare wrote a sequence of sonnets about love and his plays often show us the difficulties of trying to balance the aspects of love, marriage october/november 2017

THE MARLOVIAN THEORY The Marlovian Theory of Shakespeare Authorship postulates that Christopher Marlowe wrote the poems and plays attributed to William Shakespeare. Historical records show that Marlowe died in Deptford on May 30, 1593, but the theory postulates that his death was faked.

Marlovians, those who support the theory, base their argument on anomalies surrounding Marlowe’s death and on the influence his works had Shakespeare’s writing. They also mention that the first time the name William Shakespeare is known to have been connected with literary work was the publication of Venus and Adonis, just a few weeks after Marlowe’s apparent death. However, Marlowe’s death was accepted as genuine during a judicial inquiry held by the Queen’s personal coroner.

Everyone believed he was dead and there was no direct evidence to prove his survival beyond the year of 1593.

HOW THE THEORY CAME TO BE

In August 1819, an anonymous writer for The Monthly Review said Christopher Marlowe might be a nom de guerre, or pseudonym, assumed by William Shakespeare.

The same literary journal further developed the idea in September 1820, mentioning how Shakespeare “disappears from all biographical research just at the moment when Marlowe first comes on the stage; and who reappears in his proper name shortly after the reports of Marlowe’s death.”

CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE’S DEATH

Historical records indicate Christopher Marlowe died on May 30, 1593 as a result of a knife wound above his right eye, which was given to him by Ingram Frizer. Frizer was an acquaintance of Marlowe’s with whom he had been dining. They, along with two other men named, had apparently spent the day together at the home of Eleanor Bull, who offered rooms and refreshments for private meetings.

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE However, as new information became available, the argument about Marlowe’s death changed drastically. It went from thinking that because he wrote Shakespeare, his death must have been faked, to challenging the details of the inquest, to claiming the circumstances surrounding the faking suggested it had been the most likely scenario, despite whether he went on to write Shakespeare or not.

ENTER WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

The world knows William Shakespeare as the author who was born in Stratfordupon-Avon in 1564. He moved to London and became an actor and shareholder in the Lord Chamberlain’s Men which owned the Globe Theatre. However, a central point in the Marlovian theory is the first association of William Shakespeare in literary work was

just 13 days after Marlowe’s reported death. Shakespeare’s first published work, Venus and Adonis, was registered with the Stationers’ Company in April 1593 (before Marlowe’s death), but had no named author at the time.

By June 12 that same year, Venus and Adonis was put on sale, bearing William Shakespeare’s name.

IN CONCLUSION

The main argument against the Marlovian theory is there is no solid evidence that Marlowe survived or did anything more than simply inspire William Shakespeare. Whether or not the Marlovian theory is true, it inspired more research into Christopher Marlowe’s life and his works. As a result, several books on his life have been published.

WOMEN IN ELIZABETHAN THEATRE Shakespeare’s female roles were played by men and young boys until 1660. The first group of women who dared to perform were regarded as prostitutes and had to deal with wealthy men who paid extra for a view of their dressing rooms. Seeing a woman on stage was so shocking that prologues were written to forewarn the audience.

The first female Desdemona has been widely identified as Margaret Hughes, who went on to join the original Theatre Royal Company of Drury Lane and enjoyed a successful stage career. october/november 2017

GLOSSARY HUNTING EXPEDITION – A region of Kowloon, along with Stonecutters Island, was ceded to the United Kingdom in 1860 and was used by the British mainly for tiger-hunting expeditions.

KOWLOON – Meaning ‘Nine Dragons,’ the legend is that Kowloon was named in the year 1278 by the boy Emperor Bing after counting eight mountains, each thought to inhabit a dragon. A courtier pointed out that Emperors were also believed to be dragons, bringing the tally to Nine Dragons.

KOWLOON RIPPER – A play on Jack the Ripper, a notorious serial killer believed to have been active in and around the largely impoverished Whitechapel district of London in 1888.

LIMEHOUSE – A notorious riverside

OPIUM DENS – Establishments where opium was sold and smoked.

PLAYING CHINESE WHISPERS – The

game where one person whispers a message into another person’s ear and they whisper it to the next person in line. Known as ‘Telephone’ in North America and enjoyed for the discrepancies in communication as the last person speaks the transmitted message out loud.

SCOTLAND YARD – Headquarters for the London police force, est. 1829.

SISYPHUS – In Greek mythology, was condemned to an eternity of pushing an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down.

STAR FERRY – Boat that carries passengers from Tsim Sha Tsui to Hong Kong Island.

TAI-PAN – Literally translates as

district in London, famed for its early 20th century drug houses, unemployment and crime.

“top class” or “big shot,” tai-pans were foreign-born businessmen who headed large trading houses.

SYNOPSIS 1920s Hong Kong. Battling racism and his own reputation, Chinese detective Tommy Lam investigates the deaths of several women. With a suspected serial killer in his sights, Tommy follows clues to the glamorous Nine Dragons nightclub and into the haze of the opium trade. Between Two Worlds THE GENESIS OF NINE DRAGONS

BY JOVANNI SY Although Tommy is the hero of my play, Nine Dragons actually began with the character of Victor. I was interested in exploring the idea of a Chinese man who goes to extreme lengths to eschew all traces of his heritage and identity. I wanted to examine what self-imposed cultural erasure looked like.

I think there are two reasons Victor ended up being a British-educated man in 1920s Hong Kong. Many years ago, I saw an old black-and-white photograph of an elegant Chinese man in a tuxedo smoking a cigarette. He resembled an Asian Noël Coward. Though I don’t remember exactly where and when I saw this picture, the memory of it stayed with me over the years. So that was the first impulse for Victor.

The second is that I am a closet Anglophile. When I was a teen in the early 1980s, I was obsessed with miniseries like Brideshead Revisited, the RSC’s adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby, and the film Chariots of Fire. In 1982, I was transfixed by the BBC series Playing 34

Shakespeare with Patrick Stewart, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen and Ben Kingsley.

Not long after, I had the transformative experience of seeing Ian McKellen (not yet Sir Ian) perform his one-man show Acting Shakespeare live at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre.

As a young actor, I dreamed of joining the Shaw Festival where I could let my inner Anglophile loose on stage. That never transpired. However, in 2010, I did spend a year at The Shaw as their resident playwright. That’s when the idea of Victor started to take form. I suppose he is the manifestation of a kind of character I had always longed to portray but never did.

Not long after, I conceived the character of Tommy, who is simultaneously Victor’s opposite and his kindred spirit.

Since I perceived them as intellectual equals and natural foils, the mystery genre seemed appropriate. I saw my two Chinese men — separated by class and circumstance — engaged in a cat-andmouse game of wits. The mystery

NINE DRAGONS genre also appealed to me because the procedural aspects of solving a crime could occur while the play’s essential mystery — that of Tommy’s identity — lay under the surface. Finally, placing the action in 1920s Hong Kong would allow me to explore the power dynamics of colonialism.

In many ways, Tommy and Victor both represent aspects of myself and my life’s experience as an artist of colour in an industry that has traditionally been quite Eurocentric. When I began my theatre career in 1992, opportunities for non-white actors were few and far between. And without a large canon of Asian Canadian drama back then, my choices were to try to act in parts written for white people or to resign myself to the dismal array of stereotypes written for people who looked like me.

Basically I could try to ‘whiten myself up’ like Victor or suffer through indignities like Tommy.

In writing Nine Dragons, I wanted to dramatize the choice that many marginalized people face: assimilate (often through erasing essential aspects of oneself) or be relegated to secondary status. (Of course, there is a third way: redefine the rules. This is the path of heroes and saints and I try to walk it whenever I can.)

I also wanted to find a new way to dramatize the classic immigrant dilemma of feeling trapped between two worlds. In the course of my career, I have seen or been in countless variations of the immigrant identity play: Mom october/november 2017

and Dad are so traditional and don’t understand me, the kids at school make fun of my weird lunch; etc. I promised myself I would never write this kind of identity play unless I could find a fresh approach. I hope I’ve accomplished that with Nine Dragons.

I’ll share one final insight about how I approached writing this play. I’ve attempted to construct the scenes so some of the microaggressions Tommy encounters will be readily identifiable to some viewers and invisible to others depending on their relative societal privilege. So it would not surprise me at all if some audience members have an easier time identifying with Tommy than others. I think as a playwright, one of the first things you have to do is decide who you’re writing for. I decided that Nine Dragons was going to be pitched to those who recognize Tommy’s journey as lived experience. And for the less-woke among us, hopefully this play is still a satisfying detective yarn.

NO MORE MR. NICE GUY. After a notable career playing good-natured characters, Robb Paterson is ready to tackle the crotchety miser Ebenezer Scrooge. He joins an incredibly talented local cast who will bring this timeless classic to life. Robb comes full circle with this plum role. During the 1993/94 season, he played loving family man Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol – The Musical. The powerful courtroom thriller Twelve Angry Jurors kept the audience on the edge of their seats from May 3 to 6 for the Lawyers Play — a fundraiser in support of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. The dedicated cast of members of the Manitoba Bar Association played passionate jurors deciding the fate of a 19-year-old man accused of murdering his father. A story that still resonates in our time, Twelve Angry Jurors examines prejudice, the principle of reasonable doubt, and what it truly means to live in a democracy.

Celebrating its 25th production, the Royal MTC/MBA Lawyers Play is a vital fundraising event for the theatre, and has raised more than $1,000,000 since 1990!
