This nationally recognised qualification builds your confidence and capability by teaching you the core skills used in workshops every day.

This nationally recognised qualification builds your confidence and capability by teaching you the core skills used in workshops every day.

Develop a broad range of core entry-level automotive skills like safe and sustainable work practices, communication and problem-solving. What is the referral process for students wanting to undertake a Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology (AUR20520) Automotive Vocational Preparation (AUR20720) - VET in schools, with MTA Training and Employment?

VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) Express Interest

Express your interest in undertaking a VET course to your school VET Coordinator or Career Advisor.

School Refers

The application process is initiated by the school.

Your School VET Coordinator or Career Advisor can scan the QR code to download the referral form.

SRNI Test

Undertake an SRNI Test (Snapshot Reading and Numeracy Assessment) to demonstrate you are at the required levels to commence the required program.

Your SRNI Test results will be reviewed.

There are two ways to start or continue your apprenticeship with MTA Training and Employment: 1. Apply and be employed by MTA Training and Employment Let us take care of the process for you. As your employer, MTA will: Match you with one of our 1,200+ employers across SA Provide PPE, uniform, and a basic toolkit (for full-time apprentices) Assign you a dedicated Apprentice Employment Officer for one-on-one support Deliver top-tier training in-class and on-the-job via our state-of-the-art facilities Provide access to a 24/7 mentor

Automotive Apprenticeships

Entry requirements For full-time and school-based apprenticeships

To apply, you must: Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident Be living in South Australia Be 16 years or older Be willing to commit to a 3–4 year apprenticeship (5 years for a dual trade apprenticeship) Have at least P-Plates (for full-time apprentices) or Ls (for school-based apprentices) Pass MTA’s pre-selection test and interview If you are over 21, please review our Adult Apprenticeship Policy before applying

Desirable (not essential): Certificate I or II in Automotive Experience with hand/power tools Completed work experience in the automotive industry

Literacy and numeracy assessment (ACSF exit level 2) Applicants must complete a literacy and numeracy assessment as part of the entry process.

Individuals seeking access to subsidised training (Certificate II or III) must demonstrate at least an ACSF Exit Level 2 in reading and numeracy

Identification requirements for funding To enrol, applicants must supply evidence of identity (e.g., photo ID, license, proof of address) as required under the WorkReady funded training arrangements

Interview Tips Be prepared Research the company; learn basic information about what they do Bring a printed copy of your resume, school report (if asked), and any certificates you’ve earned

Practice your answers Know the reason why you chose to apply You may be asked to “Tell us about yourself”; keep it short - why you’re interested in cars or the automotive industry and any work experience or automotive subjects you’ve done Know why you want to be an apprentice; the interviewer will want to hear that you’re serious about the trade Think about your strengths; use examples from part-time employment, school or sport etc.

Prepare questions to ask the interviewer; this helps to show your interest Google commonly asked interview questions and practice your answers

First impressions matter Arrive at the business’s reception desk 10 minutes before the booked interview time Dress in suitable interview clothes; no rips, tears, stains, hi vis, tank tops, thongs, shorts, hats/ beanies, hoodies etc It’s suggested to remove any facial piercings (other than ears) Make sure all hair including beards are neat and tidy Ensure you wear enclosed footwear as you may be taken on a tour of the workshop Make sure your phone is on silent Do not take any food or drink with you to the interview (other than water) It’s recommend not to chew gum during the interview

Be professional Greet your interviewer with a handshake, eye contact, and a smile Think about your answers before you say them; If you need time to answer, it’s ok to ask Ensure to keep your answer precise, try not to ‘waffle’ too much Ensure your answers are positive Be honest about what you don’t know; it’s okay not to know everything!

Body language matters; sit up straight and make eye contact Do not look at your phone during the interview After the interview, say thank you and ask what the next steps are; send a short thank-you email that afternoon. This helps them remember you and shows you are serious

Just remember - even if you’re nervous, show up with a great attitude. That’s what employers remember most.

Apprentice Employment Officers (AEO) When you become an apprentice through MTA, you’re never on your own. Every apprentice is assigned a dedicated AEO. They are your personal support coach throughout your entire apprenticeship journey.

AEOs regularly visit you at your host employer’s workshop, check in on your progress, and make sure you’re safe, supported, and on track with your training. They help solve problems, offer career advice, and even step in to help find a new placement if needed.

Frequently asked questions Is there an age limit for your Work Experience Program?

Yes. Students must be in Year 10 or above to apply. There’s no maximum age limit, so older students and school leavers are also welcome to apply.

Is your Work Experience Program done at MTA Training and Employment Workshops?

No. We place you in actual workshops through our large network of host employers across South Australia.

How long does it take to complete Cert II in Automotive Servicing Technology (AUR20520) or Cert II in Automotive Vocational Preparation (AUR20720)?

For the Cert II in Automotive Servicing, the course runs one day a week during school terms and takes place over the course of one school year. It’s only available to Year 11 and 12 students and does not run during school holidays.

For a Cert II in Automotive Vocational Preperation (AUR20720), the course runs one day a week during the school term and takes place over just one semester (6 months).

If you are no longer in school and meet our eligibility criteria, you can enrol in a Certificate II full-time course. See our website for more information.

Which schools/locations offer Cert II in Automotive Servicing Technology (AUR20520) and Cert II in Automotive Vocational Preparation (AUR20720) - VET in schools course?

We currently run programs at seven locations!

Five schools - Underdale High School, St Patrick’s Technical College, Urrbrae Agricultural High School, Playford International College (new in 2026!), Reynella East College (new in 2026!)

Plus our two Training Centres at Royal Park and Cleve.

What is the difference between school-based and full-time apprenticeships?

A school-based apprenticeship is available to students in Years 11 and 12. It allows you to start your apprenticeship part-time while still completing your schooling—and it even counts towards your SACE. Once you finish school, you’ll automatically transition into a full-time apprenticeship without needing to reapply. A full-time apprenticeship is available to those who who meet the eligibility criteria and no longer at school and ready to start working and learning full time.

How long does the apprenticeship take to complete?

Depending on the apprenticeship you choose, it can be 3, 4 or 5 years. See page 28 for more information.

Can I do an apprenticeship while still at school?

Yes. MTA offers school-based apprenticeships where eligible students can begin working and training while completing their SACE.

If I am wanting to do a school-based apprenticeship, do I need to have my Ps? No, however, if you are enrolling into a Light Vehicle apprenticeship, you will need to be well on your way to getting your Ps (at least 50 hours).

What are the entry requirements for either a school-based or full-time apprenticeship?

You’ll need to have completed Year 10 or higher, be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and pass MTA’s pre-selection test and interview.

Can I do an apprenticeship if I’m over 21?

If you’re 21 or older, please review our Adult Apprenticeship Policy (mtasant.com.au/policies) before applying. You may also want to consider our Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology (Full-Time) [AUR20520], which can be found on our website.

How old do I need to be in order to apply for a full-time apprenticeship?

You need to be 16 years or older and need to have your provisional (P) driver’s license to apply.

What is the process once I apply for a school-based or full-time apprenticeship through MTA? After applying to MTA, you will undertake an interview. If successful, you will be assigned an Apprentice Employer Officer who will match you with a host employer. That is your time to shine - impress the host employer and you are on your way to undertaking an induction and starting your apprenticeship.

Do I need to find my own employer?

No. If you are employed through MTA, we’ll find a suitable host employer for you to work at during your apprenticeship.

Do I a need a resume to apply for an Apprenticeship?

Yes. You are applying for a job so you will be required to submit a resume. For resume tips, please go to page 78.

Do I have to do an Interview?

Yes. You are applying for a job so you will be required to have an interview with our Recruitment Team. For interview tips, please go to page 80.

Will I get paid during the apprenticeship?

Yes, apprentices receive wages in line with the relevant Award.

Is there any financial support available?

Eligible apprentices may receive government support like trade support loans, travel allowances, or apprenticeship completion incentives. We’ll guide you through these options.

What tools or equipment do I need?

MTA apprentices are provided with a basic tool box/kit in lieu of a tool allowance. This tool box/kit becomes yours at the end of your apprenticeship.

Where will the training take place?

On-the-job training happens at your host employer’s workshop. Off-the-job training (trade school) takes place at one of our training centres (Royal Park or Cleve).

What happens if I don’t get along with my host employer?

One of the benefits of being employed through MTA is that we manage your placement. If an issue arises, we can help mediate or find you a new host employer if required.

Glossary Apprenticeship A job where you learn a trade by working with a qualified technician while also studying to get your nationally recognised qualification.

AUR Codes These are national training codes used to identify different automotive qualifications (e.g. AUR30620 = Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology).

Certificate II An entry-level course that builds your basic automotive knowledge and hands-on skills. Available for Year 11 and 12s only.

Certificate III A full trade qualification you complete during your apprenticeship. This is what officially makes you a qualified technician.

Dual Trade A training pathway where you study and work toward two Certificate III qualifications at the same time (e.g.

Light Vehicle + Automotive Electrical), for just one extra year instead of an additional 4 years.

Host Employer The business/workshop where you are placed and work while completing your apprenticeship.

Induction Your official start with MTA Training and Employment. This is where you’ll get your uniform, meet your support team and begin learning safety and workshop basics.

Mentor Program MTA provides a free mentor to guide and support you throughout your apprenticeship journey, from work/ life balance to mental health.

Mock Interviews Practice interviews designed to help you build confidence, improve communication and get job-ready.

Pre-Selection Test A short test that checks your basic reading and maths skills to make sure you’re ready to start training.

Qualified Technician Someone who has completed their apprenticeship and earned their Certificate III. They’re qualified to work in their trade.

RTO (Registered Training Organisation) An official training provider like MTA Training and Employment that is approved to deliver nationally recognised courses.

School-based Apprenticeship A part-time apprenticeship you start while still in school (Years 11 or 12), combining work, training, and study.

SACE Points Credits earned in school (South Australian Certificate of Education). You can earn up to 55 points by completing either a Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology (AUR20520) or Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preperation (AUR20720) with MTA.

Trade School Where you complete the study part of your apprenticeship, usually at one of MTA’s training centres, like Royal Park or Cleve

Try-A-Trade A hands-on event where you try different automotive trades for yourself to see which one fits you best.

VET Coordinator A teacher at your school who helps you apply for work experience, a Certificate II, or school-based apprenticeships.

VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) A referral and eligibility process for students wanting to do VET (Vocational Education and Training) courses like Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology (AUR20520) and Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preperation (AUR20720) through school.

Work Experience A short-term placement in a real workshop where you get to see what the job is like, try basic tasks, and decide if it’s the right fit for you. It’s a great first step before starting a Certificate II or Certificate III.
