For those in the know, Rimac is a pretty big deal in the electric vehicle world - its tech appears in other carmakers’ vehicles - and it has been making plenty of headlines, especially with the Nevera which is capable of a top speed over 400km/h and of reaching 0-100km/h in under two seconds. And so we thought we would take the opportunity in this edition to look not only at the Nevera, but at the other all-electric supercars

ROUNDHOG DAY IS now the norm as we manage further COVID lockdowns. We must accept this as part of the COVID dance.

THE NEW ORDER

For the first time in modern history, our industry is at a point which can change our trajectory forever. This revolution concerns zero emission vehicles, advanced driving systems and connection with electricity generation and transmission. For manufacturers, governments make the difference as inadequate incentives mean we won’t see the best vehicles in Australia. National leadership is needed to compete with other developed countries and to avoid a patchwork of differing state based polices, taxes and incentives.

INDUSTRY SKILLS SHORTAGE

Members report a robust business outlook but are frustrated by skill shortages and supply constraints. Members detail delays in finishing jobs, or not completing jobs at all, due to labour shortages. There are over 4,000 vacancies for mechanics in Queensland. Shortages are exacerbated by the omission of automotive trades as priorities for skilled migration. Automotive occupations were left off the Australian Government’s Priority Migration Skilled Occupations List, limiting our industry’s capacity to grow and service the economy. We are training new tradespeople (apprenticeship commencements are up 40 per cent) but this takes time - years. A final reminder about the Carmageddon 4 symposium on 22 July. MONG THE MANY member issues that cross my desk each month are consumer matters that must be dealt with in advocacy KELLIE DEWAR terms immediately. DEPUTY CEO | GENERAL At a practical MANAGER MEMBER SERVICES consumer advocacy level, registered owners of hydrogen, electric and hybrid powered vehicles built after 1 January 2019 are now legally required to display specific labels to the front and rear number plates of the vehicle. Owners of vehicles built after 1 January 2019, but registered prior to 1 October 2020, have until 1 October 2021 to ensure labels are attached. Labels can be obtained from the MTAQ website, and are currently available for pre-order. I must also point our Farm and Industrial Machinery Dealers’ members to the PC’s Right to Repair draft report, which assesses competition in the agricultural machinery market and indicates whether consumers may be harmed from limits to third-party repair. This draft report coincides with the completion of the ACCC’s Agricultural Machinery market study, which recommends that agricultural machinery be considered for inclusion in the motor vehicle service and repair information sharing scheme. A concerning issue that has emerged is the publicity given to franchise business models that do not provide fair profitability and the payment of award wages. We are considering and consulting on the development of a wages audit product to identify/prevent underpayments linked to brand damage. Until next month, take care and stay safe.

ELECTRIC SCOOTER START-UP SET TO LAUNCH WITH GLOBAL AMBITION

I

t is not possible to talk about the future of transportation without the word ‘electrification’ entering the conversation. Major markets – from the U.S. to Europe to China – are embracing electric vehicles (EVs), governments across the world are setting targets for the phasing out of fossil fuel-powered vehicles, and leading ‘traditional’ carmakers - and a host of start-ups – are busy chasing after Tesla in the race to find a place in the shifting world order. Electrification goes beyond the headlinegrabbing passenger car sector, of course. From heavy-duty trucks to buses to vans to motorcycles to scooters, every sector of the transportation/mobility landscape is going through the electric revolution, and once we have come out on the other side, it is likely that every area of the mobility

While Australia has been slower than many developed nations in embracing electric vehicles, there are those in the country who recognise the opportunities the electric transformation offers and are building businesses geared to be market leaders not only in the local market but, potentially, on a global scale.

One such business is Benzina Zero, a Brisbane-based start-up company which, in September, is set to launch a range of battery-electric scooters and mopeds into the Australian market. The company was founded by Joe D’Ercole and Ben Silver – two entrepreneurs with a long history in the two-wheel vehicle sector, a shared passion for that sector’s electrified future and the benefits it offers, and who have spent the past couple of years putting in place the foundations for their company to have an international reach. The company, which will have its HQ in Brisbane, has already set up shop in Italy - where its European base is in the city of Vasto in the Abruzzo region - and is in the process of finalising agreements in Europe. At launch, Benzina Zero – which takes its name from the combination of the Italian word for petrol and its mission to sell zero-emission vehicles – will offer a suite of products designed to cover a

range of requirements, from personal commuting to urban and last-mile delivery, and includes four two-wheel electric-motor scooter and moped models, plus a three-wheel model. These are the City moped and the Sport scooter aimed at the commuter sector; the Duo moped and Duo+ scooter aimed at the delivery sector; and the Aidea three-wheel delivery scooter. Apart from the Aidea scooter, which will be imported from Japan, all the City/Duo models are manufactured in China – the epicentre of the electric vehicle revolution - and have been developed with a good deal of input from the Benzina Zero team. That input has resulted, said Ben, in a range of vehicles that are of the highest quality; that offer class-leading range; excellent speed, power and carrying capacity; that use Bosch motors, LG batteries, and disc brakes; are European certified; and can be tailored to meet a range of customer July 2021 Motor Trader | 9

demands. The Duo+, for example, can be adapted to fill just about any requirement. “That product offers plenty of options,” said Ben. “It can be a bare-bones bike to ride on, you can have it with some basic racks, do your shopping on it, deliver things with it, go to the beach on it. There’s almost nothing you can’t do with it.” Quality and simplicity has been the name of the game for Joe, Ben and the Benzina Zero team. The scooters and mopeds in the range have been designed with quality components and ease of use in mind, and this is reflected in battery recharging technology that is simple and convenient. “We have both swap-and-go batteries and the ability to plug into a 240-volt wall socket for charging, and there’s no requirement for a special wall charger,” said Joe. “You can either plug the bike into the wall in the garage or, if you are parked on the street, you can take the battery out and recharge it in the house. 10 | Motor Trader July 2021

In 2000, Joe, a motor mechanic by trade, founded Scooterlife Australia, a business that would incorporate Scootopia - a standalone scooter store in Brisbane that became the largest scooter retailer in Australia. Ben joined Scooterlife in 2005 and would become general sales manager with the company. By 2014, after more than a decade of success, public interest in scooters and

“We wanted to have responsibility for our product through its life, and we are mandating through our distributor agreements with our other importers that they do the same in their country.” With a launch date slated for September this year, Joe and Ben have their eye set on expanding swiftly. “Within the next 12 months, we are aiming to have a good dealer support network up and running across Australia and New Zealand,” said Joe. “We already have a team in place in Italy, and by the end of the year other countries will come online. The goal is that within five years we will be up and running in about 30 countries.” It’s an ambitious plan, but at a time when transportation is shifting inexorably to electrification, it could well be the right time. “When you ask where the market is going, you can’t see any other answer other than it will be zero emissions,” said Ben. “The shift to electric vehicles is as fundamental a shift as it was moving from horses to cars. It will revolutionise how we move and how we think about transportation and ownership.”

MTAQ DIVISION GOES DIGITAL WITH FACEBOOK GROUPS

M

TA QUEENSLAND’S USED car division is making it simpler for dealers to connect with each other and customers, with the adoption of online Facebook groups. With the current climate brought about by the COVID pandemic making it imperatively more important for businesses to digitise their operations and develop a staunch online presence, Facebook has quickly become a necessary platform for businesses to connect with, and in many cases do businesses with, customers. One such way of connecting on Facebook is through Facebook groups. Groups is a powerful marketing tool that allows businesses to develop an online community that grants two-way communication with customers. It can also be used as a platform for like-minded business owners to connect with each other and stay up to date on the latest

news and events relevant to all. Understanding the necessity of such an online group, MTA Queensland’s Automotive Remarketing Division (ARD), representing retail second-hand dealerships, recently developed the ‘Qld Used Car Dealers’ Facebook group. An initiative of ARD Chair Peter Dever, Managing Director of Supamerc in Coopers Plains, the ‘Qld Used Car Dealers’ group represents a communal place for Queensland used car dealers to engage and discuss all things related to the used car sector of the automotive industry. Open to both MTA Queensland members and non-members, the group is moderated daily to ensure all questions and queries and responded to in a timely manner and allows the moderators to explain and promote the many member offerings and benefits available to members of MTA Queensland. Additionally, the ARD has also created a second Facebook group, aimed at allowing quality Queensland used car dealers to safely and securely advertise and sell their second-hand vehicles to customers. ‘Used car 4 U’ is open to both MTA Queensland members and non-members, as well as the public, who can be assured that the vehicles advertised through the page are being sold through trusted dealers. MTA Queensland encourages all licensed used car dealers in Queensland to jump on to Facebook and join both the Used car 4 U and Qld Used Car Dealers groups and join the conversation today.

HE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY is going through incredible transformation. Rod Camm was appointed as Group Chief Executive for the Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTA Queensland) in November 2020. A 30-year veteran in policy development, industry engagement and tertiary education, Rod has spent the last 25-years at the executive level, leading significant organisational change at leading government agencies, Government owned companies and industry and private sector organisations. Rod has also been involved in proceedings with international organisations including the OECD, UNESCO and the G20 Human Capital Taskforce and has considerable experience at the Board level. PROF MICHAEL MILFORD QUT Science and Engineering Faculty, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics and Autonomous Systems

Professor Milford conducts interdisciplinary research across robotics, neuroscience and computer vision and is a multi-award-winning educational entrepreneur. His research models the neural mechanisms in the brain to develop new technologies in robotics and autonomous vehicles. He is one of Australia’s most in demand technological experts and is a passionate science communicator. He currently holds the position of Acting Director of the QUT Centre for Robotics, Professor at the Queensland University of Technology, Microsoft Research Faculty Fellow and Chief Investigator at the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision. PROF PETA ASHWORTH Director Andrew N. Liveris Academy for Innovation and Leadership - University of Queensland

Peta’s contributions to the field of sustainable energy include leading the social science research program of the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute, as well as working alongside Australia’s Chief Scientist in the development of Australia’s National Hydrogen Strategy and the COAG Hydrogen Working Group. In addition she is a Research Leader for the Future Fuels CRC Social Licence to Operate work package and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2019 for her service to science. She has recently been appointed as Chair for the Hydrogen Taskforce. DR ANNA KAKSONEN Group Leader – CSIRO

Based in Western Australia, Dr Anna Kaksonen leads the Industrial Biotechnology Group in the Industry Environments Program in CSIRO Land and Water. She is a co-author of a National Report providing the Australian Government with a roadmap for transitioning towards a circular economy for plastic, tyre, glass and paper. Anna focused on exploring circular economy opportunities for end-of-life tyres and is well abreast of the issues facing the industry. She believes there is a great potential for businesses to increase value recovery from used tyres, especially off-the-road tyres (i.e. mining and heavy industry tyres), of which only 11 per cent are collected for value recovery, while 89 per cent are disposed onsite, stockpiled, dumped or landfilled.

The State economy is much stronger than forecast at the 1 December State Budget – debt and unemployment are lower providing confidence for the 2021-22 year. The Budget builds on policies and programs that formed the Queensland Economic Recovery Plan. ECONOMIC STATISTICS Deficit: A General Government operating deficit of $3.803 billion is forecast in 2020– 21, an improvement compared to the $8.633 billion deficit forecast in the previous Budget and a return to an operating surplus is forecast in 2024–25 - $153 million. General Government Revenue for 2021-22 is $63.664 b; Expenses $67.148 b; deficit $3.485 b. Total debt: The budget papers reveal Queensland’s total debt will now be $122.3 billion in 2023-24 – $7.7 billion better off than initially forecast. Debt, at this stage, is forecast at $127.7 billion by 2024-25, as the government’s budgetary outlook improves courtesy of increased revenue from a 20 | Motor Trader July 2021

recovering economy and a reduction in government expenditure. Net worth: General Government Sector net worth was $193.731 billion at 30 June 2020. It is expected to increase to $204.691 billion in 2020–21, over $13 billion higher than expected in the 2020–21 Budget. GSP: Robust ongoing growth of 2¾ per cent is forecast for 2021–22 and in each subsequent year across the forward estimates. The strength of the Queensland economy has been underpinned by elevated activity in consumer spending and the housing sector. Unemployment rate: Ongoing strong employment growth of 3 per cent in 2021–22 is expected to drive down the unemployment rate to 5¾ per cent by June


quarter 2022, with the unemployment rate steadily improving across the forecast period to be 5 per cent by June quarter 2025. Public Service Expenses: $27.474 billion. In 2021–22, employee expenses are expected to be $27.474 billion, $1.189 billion or 4.5 per cent higher than the 2020–21 estimated actual. This reflects the increase in key frontline service areas of health and education due to demand for health services, and student population growth. Revenue: Revenue estimated to be $63.664 billion in 2021-22 – up from $60.396 (actual) in 2020--2021. State Taxation revenue: No new or increased taxes. The money flowing back to government coffers is forecast to grow by 9.4 per cent in 2021-22. Taxation revenue is forecast to be $1.492 billion (9.4 per cent) higher in 2021–22, primarily driven by continued strength in transfer duty and a rebound in payroll tax as employment and business conditions improve. Taxation revenue will increase from $15.907b in 2020-201 to $17.399b in 2021-22. Vehicle transfer duty budget for 2021-22 $663m up from the low of $533m in 201920 resulting from the fall in new car sales. Motor vehicle registration budget for 2021-22 is $2,044m; the estimated budget for 2020-21 is $1,987m. Motor Vehicle Registration contributes 11.7% of State Taxation categories. Payroll tax budget for 2021-22 is $4,192 m and for 2020-21 was $4,192m. Payroll tax contributes 25.8% of State Taxation categories. Royalties: Royalties and land budget for 2021-22 is $ $3,341m up from the 2022-21 budget of $2,667m. Waste disposal levy: The levy commenced at $75 per tonne for general waste and is regulated to increase by $5 per tonne per annum for the first 3 years. The first annual increase of $5 per tonne was deferred by 6 months to 1 January 2021 to provide financial relief from the impacts

of COVID-19. Seventy per cent of proceeds from the waste levy will be used for resource recovery and other programs that reduce the impact of waste and protect the environment and local communities. Revenue from the waste disposal levy is estimated to be $291 million in 2020–21. Revenue is forecast to grow by 8.9 per cent in 2021–22 and 5.3 per cent in 2022–23, reflecting expected growth in waste disposal as well as regulated levy rate increases. Capital Works Program: In 2021–22, $14.688 billion will be invested in capital works across the state. Capital program directly supports around 46,500 construction-related jobs in 2021–22, including 29,800 jobs outside of the Greater Brisbane region. Business: As part of the COVID-19 Fiscal and Economic Review released in September 2020, the government announced the Backing Queensland Business Investment Fund (BQBIF). This support is continuing through the $100 million Business Investment Fund, which is part of the BQBIF, to drive investment in established small and medium sized businesses to help them innovate, build scale, realise their potential, and promote job creation in Queensland. Up to $140 million in additional funding over 4 years for a revitalised Back to Work program, helping provide businesses with the confidence to employ Queenslanders facing labour market disadvantage. Small Business: A target of 25 per cent of all government purchases to be from Queensland small and medium size businesses from July 1 which will be extended to 30 per cent by June 2022. $140 million Big Plans for Small Business commitment, which has a strong focus on helping small business to innovate, grow and access new markets. This includes $100 million from the Business Investment Fund (BIF) to support established small and medium businesses innovate and realise their potential. July 2021 Motor Trader | 21


Queensland is also continuing to implement the 7 key reforms under the Small Business Regulatory Reform Agreement with the Australian Government. This includes a range of innovative reforms developed and implemented by the Queensland Government including: reforms targeting small business renewal and start-ups; improving information available to businesses on vocational education requirements; and streamlining requirements and permits related to food safety, transport and agricultural activities. The flagship initiative under this program, the Business Launchpad, will reduce the amount of paperwork and approvals that start-up and expanding small businesses are required to obtain from all 3 levels of government. Training: The 2021–22 Budget outlines additional funding investment in skills and training to meet the needs of the private sector and help individuals to re-engage with the labour market as the economy recovers. Additional funding provided in this Budget for key initiatives include: • $320 million over 4 years to extend the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) program, with the revitalised program assisting up to 15,000 Queenslanders facing disadvantage in the labour market each year. This program is now being permanently funded, embedding the program into the core business of the state. • up to $140 million in additional funding over 4 years for a revitalised Back to Work program, helping provide businesses with the confidence to employ Queenslanders. • $31.2 million to extend the 50 per cent payroll tax rebate for apprentice and trainees for another 12 months to 30 June 2022. • partner with government, industry and local communities to contribute to the 22 | Motor Trader July 2021

economic success of the state. • $100.5 million matching investment as part of the initial national JobTrainer Fund. • Vocational Education and Training (VET) – Certificate 3 Guarantee Tuition Fee Subsidy The Vocational Education and Training (VET) Certificate 3 Guarantee Tuition Fee Subsidy provides a government subsidy to allow eligible Queenslanders to obtain their first post-school Certificate III qualification to help them gain a job or to improve their employment status, including pathways for disadvantaged learners and Queensland school students (VET in Schools). The subsidy is available to preapproved private and public registered training organisations to subsidise tuition fees paid by students undertaking eligible vocational education and training qualifications (primarily Certificate III qualifications). The value of this subsidy for each qualification ranges from $472 to $6,650, depending on student eligibility and qualification subsidised. The average subsidy value is $3,060. • User Choice – Apprentice and Trainee Training Subsidy The User Choice - Apprentice and Trainee Training Subsidy program provides government funding towards the costs of training and assessment for eligible Queensland apprentices and trainees, or complementary pathways leading to apprenticeship outcomes. The subsidy is available to pre-approved public and private registered training organisations to subsidise tuition fees to reduce the cost of nationally recognised entry level training for apprentices and trainees. The program provides greater flexibility for apprentices, trainees and their employers to select a preferred registered training organisation and to negotiate the type of training to meet their specific needs. The value of this subsidy for each qualification ranges from $1,180 to $50,720.


• VET – Higher Level Skills Tuition Fee Subsidy provides a government subsidy to eligible students and employers to undertake a priority Certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma qualification or industry endorsed skill set. This program assists individuals to gain employment in a critical occupation, career advancement in a priority industry or transition to university to continue their studies. The subsidy is available to pre-approved private and public registered training organisations to subsidise tuition fees paid by students undertaking eligible vocational education and training qualifications at Certificate IV or above. The value of this subsidy for each qualification ranges from $1,175 to $10,370, depending on student eligibility and qualification subsidised. The average subsidy value is $4,384. • Travel and Accommodation Subsidy provides financial assistance to Queensland apprentices and trainees for travel expenses incurred in attending off the job training at a registered training organisation. To be eligible, apprentices must attend the closest registered training organisation that offers the required qualification and travel a minimum of 100km return from their usual place of residence to the registered training organisation. The subsidy provides for: - return land travel to the registered training organisation of 21 cents per km for distances between 100km 649km, increasing to 26 cents per km for distances of 650km or more. - a return economy air ticket to the location of the registered training organisation if necessary. - cost of ferry travel if necessary. - accommodation assistance of $30 per day for overnight stay within Queensland and $72 for interstate travellers, if it is necessary to live

away from their usual place of residence to attend training. Innovation: Emphasis on growing the innovation economy. $2.6 million over 2 years to establish the Queensland Hydrogen Taskforce. Advance Queensland. Advance Queensland has invested a total of $755 million, which has helped over 7,500 innovators and projects to succeed and supported 27,000 jobs across the state. This has included innovative enterprises such as Tritium, the world-leading Queensland based manufacturer of electric vehicle fast charging infrastructure. Transport: Continued implementation of The Future is Electric: Queensland’s Electric Vehicle Strategy, including delivery of the Zero Net Emissions Roadmap that will outline how the Department of Transport and Main Roads will lead the transition of Queensland’s transport sector to a low carbon economy. QFleet will: - continue the implementation of the QFleet Environmental Strategy for the Queensland Government motor vehicle fleet and QFleet Electric Vehicle Transition Strategy for the Queensland Government motor. vehicle fleet increasing the range and number of low and zero emission vehicles available to be leased by customer agencies. - increase the number of electric vehicles in the government fleet by achieving annual targets within the QFleet Electric Vehicle Transition Strategy • complete implementation of the new QFleet fleet management system. WOMEN MAKING THEIR MARK WITH BOB JANE T-MARTS

E

NCOURAGING WOMEN TO consider a career in automotive has become a priority for the industry. Women are woefully underrepresented in the industry and besides being just a sensible and inclusive move to make - and one that makes any business better reflect the community it serves - promoting career pathways for women makes sense for an industry that is suffering from a chronic shortage of skilled staff. There is still, sadly, some narrowmindedness when it comes to employing women in what is a traditionally maledominated industry. Some customers too can be somewhat bias, but it is also true that many appreciate the input of women, knowledgable in their craft, when trying to understand the often technical and complex work that goes into the maintenance and repair of vehicles. For Darren Newey, the Regional Manager for Company Stores for Bob Jane T-Marts in Queensland, encouraging

women to consider working with the company is a smart move. “In a male-dominated industry, it can be very daunting for a customer – male or female – to try and organise repairs or the servicing of their vehicle when they have little to no knowledge of what is needed,” he said. “Some customers – especially women or elderly customers –feel they can be misinformed due to their inexperience,

and I have noticed customers feel more relaxed, and some even ‘light up’, when they see a female behind the counter. “Over the years, I have come to realise that many customers feel more comfortable when being served by a woman.” While many applicants for positions with Bob Jane T-Marts - and, one suspects, for most jobs within the automotive industry - are male, there are more women applying for roles with the company. That, said Mr Newey, was a positive sign for the industry. “We don’t target women in our

employment adverts, but it is not uncommon for me to place an advert for tyre fitters and have a handful of female applicants. And that is encouraging,” he said. Amongst the growing number of women now working at Bob Jane T-Marts stores are Kelly Hohua, assistant manager at the Coorparoo, Brisbane, outlet, and Emma Thoren, a sales assistant at the same store. For both women, a career in the automotive industry has been a longheld ambition and while both have encountered a level of bias, they both feel positive about their future in the industry. Kelly Hohua and Emma Thoren Originally from New Zealand, 26-year-old Kelly has been passionate about cars since childhood – thanks, in part, to her father’s enthusiasm for building burnout cars – and she started a heavy commercial vehicle apprenticeship while in her home country. Unfortunately, after moving to Australia, she was unable to find someone willing to take her on and allow her to finish that training – something she puts down to her being a woman. “I do still have time to finish on my apprenticeship, and I found it hard when I first came over,” she said. “I did try to find work in that sector, but a lot of people seemed iffy about giving me a job. In New Zealand it was difficult too, and I would hear comments like, ‘You know you’re not going to be able to get your nails done’, and things like that. That was painful to hear.” Kelly found a much more welcoming environment at Bob Jane T-Marts and started work at the company’s Carina store at the beginning of 2020 before moving to the Coorparoo location after the Covid pandemic and subsequent lockdown interrupted her employment. She worked as a tyre fitter and wheel aligner before moving up to the assistant manager role which now sees her involved in every aspect of the business – from admin to sales to helping in the workshop. “I love the job and we are a real team here,” said Kelly. “When you help a customer, they really appreciate it when you put the time and effort into making sure everything goes smoothly for them.” Which is not to say her presence doesn’t raise an eyebrow from some customers, especially when it comes to wheel sales. “I do most of the rims and it does shock some people,” she said with a smile. “I’ll ask questions about what we are putting

The 28-year-old is something of a revhead and has worked within the automotive industry at Queensland Raceway and - after completing a degree in Biotechnology - at the Viva Energy refinery in Victoria where she was a laboratory analyst testing fuel samples.

N JUST A handful of years, the electric vehicle (EV) has moved from being a frown-inducing curiosity to being widely accepted as the future of transportation and mobility. Every day there are reports and announcements of new models offering greater range, bigger batteries, faster charging and so on, and even in Australia - to this point apparently indifferent to the technology – is beginning to embrace them, as can be seen from NSW’s recently unveiled Electric Vehicle Strategy. When talking about EVs, it’s hard not to mention Tesla. It could be argued that the company kickstarted the current electric revolution (although GM did take a stab 28 | Motor Trader July 2021

at the technology in the late ’90s with the well-regarded EV1), and while most of its vehicles are not sports cars, they are all swift with some being ludicrously quick. Take the Model X, for example, a rather bulky-looking, mid-size SUV. According to the company’s website, you can order

That sort of performance in an SUV would be inconceivable before the electric vehicle era. That’s the thing about EVs. Because electric motors can deliver 100 per cent of available torque immediately, they are incredibly quick off the mark. Give them enough juice and frightening acceleration and a top speed right up there with the very quickest is possible. Of course, performance is not really what electric cars are all about. They are more about being efficient, cheap to run, and being free of those nasty tailpipe emissions. But, as we know, there is a thrill

in being able to go fast and, in particular, in going faster than anyone else. And given the opportunities to do just that thanks to electric motors, a slew of incredibly potent electric supercars have emerged that offer some truly staggering performance and power numbers. Want 1000kW of grunt at your fingertips? Done. Keen to reach 100km/h in under two seconds? Done. And with the recent appearance of cars such as the Rimac Nevera and the Tesla Model S Plaid, we thought that this month, we would take a look at a handful of the incredible all-electric supercars that are either available now or are slated to be so soon. They are amazing.

Tesla Model S Plaid

TESLA MODEL S PLAID TESLA HAS BEEN setting the benchmark for electric vehicles for some years now. In fact, you could argue that the company - and perhaps more particularly its enigmatic boss, Elon Musk - is responsible for igniting the EV revolution. The company’s top model, the Model S, first appeared in 2012 and it was quick even back then. The P90D version could do the 0-100km/h sprint in 2.8 seconds and top out at 249km/h. Fast forward to today and we find the Model S Plaid version, launched last month and an absolute rocket of a car. Tesla says the Plaid has 760kW of grunt on tap, can reach 100km/h in about 2 seconds, tops out at 322km/h, and has a range of 652km. For those with a mind for drag racing, it can cover the quarter mile in 9.23 seconds. 30 | Motor Trader July 2021

Underpinning these remarkable numbers is a tri-motor, all-wheel drive, platform. Those three independent motors (two at the back, one at the front) have carbonsleeved motors which, the company says, allows for the car to ‘maintain peak power output all the way to top speed’. While the Plaid is about performance, there are impressive numbers being created outside of that area too, with the car receiving improved supercharging functionality - the new battery pack can, Tesla says, be charged with 300km of range in 15 minutes using 250kW rapid charging technology. On the inside, the redesigned cabin


includes a yoke-style steering wheel, a whopping 17-inch infotainment display and a heap of other nice features, including a display for passengers in the rear; multi-device Bluetooth, wireless and

USB-C charging for every passenger; and a 22-speaker stereo system. After nearly a decade of being in production, the Model S is a proven car, and the Plaid looks like crackingly good fun. July 2021 Motor Trader | 31


RIMAC NEVERA THE STUNNING NEVERA, revealed in June, is a creation of the Croatia-based company Rimac. The company has been at the centre of the electric ultra-high-performance action for some years and the Nevera is a production version of the company’s C_Two concept car that was unveiled three years ago. Like the other vehicles on this list, the performance and power numbers that the Nevera boasts are staggering with 100km/h reached in 1.9 seconds and a top speed of 412km/h. There are four electric motors that drive each wheel individually and their combined output is a jaw-dropping 1427kW and 2360Nm. Energy comes from a 120kWh battery designed in-house by Rimac. and seven different driving modes are available, including a TRACK mode. On the inside, the Nevera features a trio of high-definition screens, aluminium controls and switches and a connectivity system that delivers real-time data with telemetry and performance data able to be downloaded for later review. There’s an interesting feature too called Driving Coach – which Rimac says can evaluate a driver’s performance and provide guidance to improve on-track

performance. And thanks to a complex system of sensors, cameras and radars, the system can overlay selected race circuits in real-time, enabling drivers to ‘perfect their racing lines, braking and acceleration points and steering inputs’. The company says that each Nevera will be unique thanks to the personalisation options that are available, and as well as bespoke options, the hypercar will be offered in editions called GT, Signature, or Timeless. Lotus Evija

LOTUS EVIJA LOTUS IS A legendary name in automotive and is one of the handful of ‘traditional’ carmakers to pin their future on an electric technology. In April, the company announced it would shift to be a designer and manufacturer of electric cars and platforms, going so far as to say it would make those platforms available to other manufacturers. Lotus made its reputation building lightweight vehicles focused on brilliant handling and design, and that has been the aim with the Evija, although, in this case, the company can also boast one of the most powerful cars ever made. Power output is an astonishing 1470kW (1972hp), torque is 1700 Nm, and 0-100km/h time is under three seconds. Acceleration from 0-200 km/h comes in less than six seconds, from 0-300 km/h in less than 10 seconds. Top speed is over 320km/h. Staggering stuff. This potency comes via a 70kWh lithiumion battery and four motors, one for each 34 | Motor Trader July 2021

This system is, Lotus claims, the lightest, most energy dense, electric power package ever fitted to a road car. The Evija features a one-piece carbon fibre monocoque chassis, some inventive aerodynamic work to reduce drag and improve downforce, and the ability to accept an 800kW charge. Although charging units capable of delivering that amount of juice are not yet commercially available, when they are, Lotus says it will be possible to fully replenish the battery in just nine minutes. Using existing charging technology – such as a 350kW unit – the Evija’s charge time will be 12 mins to 80 per cent and 18 mins to 100 per cent. The car’s range is 400km.

How much power? A whopping 1417kW and 2300Nm that delivers acceleration of 0

to 100 km/h in less than two seconds, to 300 km/h in less than 12 seconds and a top speed of up to 350 km/h. Range is a claimed 450km and fastcharging functionality is a given, of course. Like other electric supercars, the Battista’s digital technology will allow drivers to electronically adjust the driving experience through multiple modes tuned to a range of driving scenarios and delivers a luxurious interior full of tasty trims in aluminium, carbon fibre and leather. Just 150 units of the Battista are to be made.

ASPARK OWL THIS IS THE Aspark Owl, a creation of Japanese engineering company Aspark, and a car that made its market debut earlier this year and is now on sale in North America and Europe. The Middle East and Asia markets are on the company’s radar for the car, and just 50 are to be built in the initial production run. So, what will buyers be getting? Well, according to Aspark, they’ll be able to get their hands on the fastest accelerating car in the world with 100km/h reached in somewhere around 1.7 seconds. It’s no slouch at the far end of the speed dial either, with a top speed of 400km/h. This performance comes via four electric motors churning out 1480kW of power and overall torque of 2000Nm; a 69kWh battery pack; an all-wheel torque vectoring system; and a body, chassis and plenty of components made from carbon fibre materials. Range for the Owl 450km. Aspark Owl

It will automatically activate at 150km/h to increase downforce. There’s also a double wishbone hydraulic suspension system which allows the driver to adjust the ride height between 80mm and 160mm.

Nio EP9

NIO EP9 NIO IS ONE of China’s leading EV companies and came storming out of the gate back in 2016 with this, the EP9. A true supercar, the EP9 started life with a bang, breaking the lap record for EVs at the Nurburgring in Germany and the Circuit Paul Ricard in France. And that is no surprise. Underneath the tremendously sleek and aerodynamic carbon fibre body is a carbon fibre chassis and there are four highperformance 250kW motors – each with its own gearbox – with one at each wheel. WITH 1000KW AND 1480NM AVAILABLE, THE EP9 CAN GET TO 100KM/H IN 2.7 SECONDS, AND REACH A TOP SPEED OF 313KM/H. With 1000kW and 1480Nm available, the EP9 can get to 100km/h in 2.7 seconds, and reach a top speed of 313km/h. There’s all-wheel-drive (obviously); active suspension; torque vectoring; and active aerodynamics, with the massive three-position rear wing, front splitter, and underbody diffuser that runs the length of the car giving the EP9 huge amounts of downforce – twice that of an F1 car apparently - and 3G cornering capability. The battery system is pretty clever. There are two battery packs – one on each side of the body between the front and rear wheels – and they can be charged in 45 minutes or be changed for a fresh pack in just 8 minutes.


On the inside, the design is spartan, reflecting that the EP9 was designed with track work in mind. Four screens are used to display various pieces of information, from performance data such as speed and lap time through to a track map and even

driver and passenger heart rate. There’s some real pedigree behind the EP9 – with Nio taking part in the Formula E electric racing car championship since its inception in 2014 – so it’s no wonder the car is a record breaker. July 2021 Motor Trader | 41


LUCID AIR THE LUCID AIR, like the Tesla Model S Plaid, is one of those electric vehicles that really highlights how powerful electric powertrains can be. It is a quite beautiful sedan, and that is nice, but a four-door sedan does not look like a supercar, no matter how stylish. Underneath that very nice exterior though, and it’s a different matter. Like the other, sleeker supercars on this list, the Lucid Air packs a massive punch thanks to the electric powertrain, and in the top trim model – the Dream Edition – will come out with 805kW thanks to a dual-motor, allwheel drive architecture. 0-100km/h can be reached in about 2.5 seconds and Lucid claims a quarter-mile time as quick as 9.9 seconds. Top speed is reportedly 270km/h. Lucid also claims that the Air will be the fastest charging EV, with the capability to charge at rates of up to 20 miles (32km) per minute when connected to a DC fast charging network. It has a 113kWh battery pack and a 900-volt electrical architecture. The Grand Touring version of the Air will,

NSW UNVEILS SUPPORT PACKAGE FOR EV UPTAKE

SW, IT SEEMS, has bitten the bullet on electric vehicles (EVs), and last month unveiled a $490 million package to incentivise the uptake of zero emission vehicles. The package will, from 1 September, offer rebates of $3000 for the first 25,000 EVs sold for under $68,750 and remove stamp duty from EVs under $78,000. There will also be incentives to help local councils and businesses buy EVs, and an investment of $171 million over four years in improving charging coverage. $131 million is to be spent on new ultrafast vehicle chargers, $20 million in grants for destination chargers to assist regional tourism, and $20 million for charging infrastructure at public transport hubs. This investment will see ‘EV Tourist Drives’ created across the state, with ultra-fast chargers built at 100km intervals across all major highways in NSW. The

VW TO USE NEW 3D PRINTING PROCESS IN VEHICLE PRODUCTION

V

OLKSWAGEN IS PRESSING ahead with the use of 3D printers, and a process known as binder jetting, in car production. Whereas conventional 3D printing uses a laser to build a component layer by layer from metallic powder, the binder jetting process uses an adhesive. The resulting metallic component is then heated and shaped. VW says that using the binder jetting component reduces costs and increases productivity –the components weigh only half as much as those made from sheet steel. Volkswagen says it is currently the only car maker using this 3D printing technology in the production process. The company partnered with HP and Siemens to develop the hardware and software for the project. “Despite the ongoing challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, we’re continuing to work on innovation,” says Christian Vollmer, member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Brand responsible for Production and Logistics. “Together with our partners, we aim to make 3D printing even more efficient in the years ahead and suitable for production-line use.” By 2025, VW says the aim is to produce up to 100,000 components by 3D printing each year at its Wolfsburg plant. The first components made using the binder jetting process - for the A pillar of the T-Roc convertible - have already gone

Volkswagen has been using 3D printing for years, and there are now 13 units at the Wolfsburg plant using various printing processes to manufacture components, from plastic components for prototypes such as centre consoles, door cladding, instrument panels and bumpers, to printed metal components including intake manifolds, radiators, brackets and support elements.

LIGHTNING-FAST ELECTRIC BIKE FEATURES RADICAL AERODYNAMIC TECH

W

HILE MOST OF the media headlines around electric vehicles tend to focus on passenger cars, other sectors have embraced the technology too, and there is some pretty advanced work going on in the motorcycle sector. Case in point is this prototype bike from British engineering company White Motorcycle Concepts (WMC). Called the WMC250EV, the prototype has been built with the intention of propelling the company’s founder and Chief Executive Officer Rob White to British and world electric land speed records. However, its unusual design could have dramatic impact on the efficiency of future electric road bikes. WMC says the prototype is capable of speeds exceeding 400km/h, thanks in part to an ultra-low drag system called V-Air. This innovation features a large duct at the

centre of the bike which forces air through the vehicle, rather than around it. motor unit – consisting of two 20kW motors - that powers the front wheel. There are two 30kW motors at the back wheel too for a total power output of 100kW. Energy comes via a 15kW lithium-ion battery, While the WMC250EV is clearly quick, the company says that the concept’s greatest impact could be on a vehicle’s energy efficiency. “The records are all champagne, but are actually the insignificant part of the story,” said Rob White in a statement. “While this technology allows you to go faster, it also allows you to go much further for the same amount of energy. This has a direct and tangible benefit on C02 reduction. Marketdisruptive ideas like this are uncommon, and if successful, have the potential to revolutionise industry.” WMC says it is already working on a real-world new technology and is producing a 300cc three-wheel hybrid scooter – the WMC300FR – that includes V-Air and reduces drag by 25 per cent. That equates, the company says, to 18 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency from aerodynamic improvements alone and when coupled with a small hybrid system enhances the performance to near 500cc levels, but with 50 per cent less CO2 emissions.

DAVID BECKHAM INVESTS IN UK EV COMPANY DAVID BECKHAM, the uber-famous and ultra-wealthy former football player has invested in Lunaz, the UK-based technology company that upcycles and converts motor vehicles to its proprietary electric powertrain. While the company has made its name doing such work on classic cars, its ambitions go considerably further than that and Beckham’s investment – which is substantial and sees him take a 10 per cent stake in the company – is part of a capitalraising effort that will see Lunaz move to offer upcycling and electrification of industrial vehicles on a mass scale. The company says it will begin with industrial Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) vehicles including refuse trucks, of which, it says, 80 million currently exist in the UK, EU and USA. Lunaz says it remanufacturing and electrification process will extend the life of up to 70 per cent of the existing weight and embedded carbon within a vehicle. The company says it also saves fleet operators significant costs compared with replacing existing vehicles with new, claiming that a municipal authority could save more than 43 per cent in the Total Cost of Ownership of an upcycled and electrified refuse truck versus replacing their existing fleet with new equivalent electric vehicles. JAGUAR LAND ROVER DEVELOPING HYDROGENPOWERED DEFENDER FUEL CELL PROTOTYPE

AGUAR LAND ROVER (JLR) is developing a prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) based on the new Land Rover Defender. The FCEV concept is part of Jaguar Land Rover’s aim to achieve zero tailpipe emissions by 2036, and net zero carbon emissions across its supply chain, products and Land Rover Defender operations by 2039. This advanced engineering project, known as Project Zeus, is part funded by the governmentbacked Advanced Propulsion Centre, and is aimed at allowing engineers to understand how a hydrogen powertrain can be optimised to deliver on performance and capability: from range to refuelling, and towing to off-road ability. The project sees JLR team up with several R&D partners including Delta Motorsport, AVL, Marelli Automotive Systems and the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC). GM TO BOOST EV AND AV INVESTMENTS TO $US35 BILLION

G

ENERAL MOTORS (GM) is to increase its electric vehicle (EV) and autonomous vehicles (AV) investments from 2020 through 2025 to $US35 billion ($AU46 billion), representing a 75 per cent increase from its initial commitment announced prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The company says it is looking to become the market leader in EVs in North America; the global leader in battery and fuel cell technology through its Ultium battery platform and HYDROTEC fuel cells; and through self-driving car company Cruise, be the first to safely commercialise self-driving technology at scale. GM announced in March 2020 that it would invest $US20 billion ($AU26 billion) from 2020 through 2025, including capital, engineering expenses and other development costs, to accelerate its transition to EVs and AVs. In November 2020, the company increased its planned investment over the same period to $US27

billion ($AU35.5 billion). VOLVO CARS TO INVESTIGATE FOSSIL-FREE STEEL VOLVO IS TEAMING up with Swedish steel maker SSAB to explore the development of fossil­-free, high-quality steel for use in the automotive industry through the HYBRIT initiative. HYBRIT was started by SSAB, iron ore producer LKAB, and energy firm Vattenfall and aims to replace coking coal, traditionally needed for iron ore-­based steelmaking, with fossil-­free electricity and hydrogen. The result, the companies say, is expected to be the world’s first fossil­-free steelmaking technology, with virtually no carbon footprint. As part of the collaboration, Volvo Cars will be the first carmaker to secure SSAB steel made from hydrogen­-reduced iron from HYBRIT’s pilot plant in Sweden. This steel will be used for testing purposes and may be used in a concept car. In 2026, SSAB aims to supply the market with fossil­-free steel at a commercial scale. Of the total CO2 emissions from the material and production of the components that go into its cars, Volvo says 35 per cent are related to steel and iron production for its traditionally powered cars, and 20 per cent in a fully electric car. As many rush to build the latest trend in muscle car, big block, petrol-guzzling beasts, Mick McMullen has built a one-of-a-kind Toyota Hilux. The bright yellow ute has many custom touches that speak to the quality of workmanship and level of skill found at McMullen Paint and Panel in Far North Queensland. Mick took a moment out of his day to chat with Motor Trader about the Hilux. WORDS AND PICTURES: LARA WILDE

This ute does stand out in a crowd. Can you tell us the details of it? MM: The ute is a 1990, two-wheel drive,

dual cab Toyota Hilux. They are not known for their performance or luxury. Under the bonnet is a 22R engine, and it is backed up by a five-speed manual gearbox and standard diff. There are five neatly upholstered seats and a dash full of quality gauges. It is reliable and comfortable and still stands out in the crowd.

How did you come to own the ute? MM: When we found this ute it was not

for the amateur car enthusiast. It was a complete wreck. There was a lot of panel damage and it was white. We bought it as a father and son project in 2012. I wanted to teach my son panel beating and spray 58 | Motor Trader July 2021

painting skills and to pass on my trade. I am not sure if it was a successful venture as my son took up a trade as a carpenter instead of following in my footsteps!


What was your vision for the ute? MM: Pretty much what you see now was

my original vision. I wanted this ute to showcase what we can do at McMullen Paint and Panel. To do that I needed a typically boring car that would not draw attention on its own. I wanted the quality of our work and the many custom touches I applied to make it stand out.

What work did you undertake on the ute with your son? MM: We went through this ute with a fine-tooth comb. There was a full bare metal respray after we removed the rust, flared the guards and created a handmade

custom tub tray. We shaved the door handles and installed custom door latches. While we were shaving and installing we removed the fuel filler flap and the windscreen washer water squirters from the bonnet. This ute is smooth from the front bumper to the back.

There are plenty of custom touches. Every time I look at it, I notice something new. What are some of the best? MM: We went with an iron cross theme on the badges and mirrors. There is custom pin striping in the cab. There are spikes above the driver’s door and plenty of

custom metal work. The wheels are from a Mitsubishi Magna and were only meant to be temporary during the build, but at the end of the day there was no better option to fit. Perhaps my favourite custom touch is the centre caps on the wheels. I searched high and low to find the perfect centre cap and I could not find them anywhere. Meanwhile my wife was renovating our bathroom at home and the plug for the sink was a perfect match. We bought three more plugs and the result is a polished finish that cannot be faulted. What other cars do you own? MM: We have a 1972 four-door

Holden Torana and a 1985 Holden VK Commodore. I guess I am a Holden man. Plus, we have the work Toyota Hilux for running around for the business.

What is your dream car to own or build? MM: My dream car is a Holden V8 Supercar. A while ago, my wife Terri-Anne won a passenger ride with Craig Lowndes at the V8 Supercars in Townsville. Because my wife is wonderful, she let me have the ride


on her behalf. Doing hot laps in a Holden V8 Supercar with Lowndes at the wheel was a once in a lifetime experience and it set my dreams to owning one.

Have you entered the ute in any car shows? MM: We have put the ute in a few local car

shows. It gets plenty of looks and lots of people want to know more. I am not sure the average onlooker notices the level of detail and customisation. I think that is the sign of quality workmanship, when it looks as though that is how it came out of the factory. Unfortunately, though, we have yet to take home a trophy.

What modifications are still on the list for the ute? MM: I am really happy with the

paint and panel on the ute. I don’t think it can be improved externally. The interior is also neat and tidy and clean. The next step will be the motor. We can always have a little more power and performance.

If you had it to do again, what would you do differently?

MM: If it was a customer’s car, I would

obviously give them whatever they paid for. The sky is the limit. For me personally though, I wouldn’t change a thing about this ute. It is reliable, comfortable and the paint work is still looking perfect after nearly 10 years.

Would you ever sell the ute? MM: Well, everything is for sale but, to be

honest, I hadn’t considered selling the ute before last week. A customer arrived to pick up her own car and took a shine to the ute. She looked at it closely, I showed her how to open the doors and before I could blink she had made herself at home in the driver’s seat. I offered to take her for a drive in it and as we cruised up the back roads, she started to ask me for a price and details if she was to buy it. My customer didn’t buy it (yet) but she did plant the seed of an idea to sell it in my head. It would be great to see the ute owned by someone who would love it and use it. RARE HOLDEN TORANA BREAKS AUCTION RECORDS

C

LASSIC CARS CAN, if they are special enough, command quite staggering sums of money when they pop up at auction. And last month saw another jawdropping price set for an Australian classic with a rare Holden Torana A9X Hatch, 1 of only 33 ever built and with only 475km on the clock, sell for more than $800,000. Sold at Lloyds Auction House, the Torana was, the company said, the subject to a bidding battle between an online and phone bidder. “We are not surprised at this result because this is the holy grail of Holden motor collector cars in the country and since the closure of Holden, they have only become all the more popular,” said Lee Hames, Chief Operations Officer for Lloyds Auctions. The Torana has a verified 475km on the clock from new and is build 1 of just 33 in existence. It was, Lloyds said, the last model of Holden racing before the V8 Commodores began. The last few months have seen some rare and/or important cars go for blockbuster prices. In January, a 2017 VFII SS-V Redline sedan (the last to go through the body and paint shop at Holden’s Elizabeth factory) sold for $750,000. Also in January, an HSV Maloo GTSR W1 sold for more than $1,000,000.

ORSCHE HAS REVEALED an Australia-exclusive 911 model - the 911 GT3 70 Years Porsche Australia Edition. The edition is based on the new 911 GTS with Touring Package (see side story), which was also recently unveiled. It is the first time that Porsche has based a market-specific edition on a 911 GT product, and the first time a special edition has been created by Porsche for the Australian market. Power will come from a 4-litre sixcylinder engine generating 375kW and 470Nm. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but a seven-speed PDK dualclutch automatic is an option. THE NEW PORSCHE 911 GT3 WITH TOURING PACKAGE PORSCHE HAS UNVEILED the new 911 GT3 Touring. The new model sports a 375kW/470Nm 4-litre, six-cylinder engine and comes with a six-speed manual GT sports gearbox as standard. However, the Touring Package can also be combined with the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission at no extra cost. The package should be good for a sub-four second sprint to 100km/h and a top speed over 300km/h. Missing from this model over the regular 911 GT3 is a fixed rear wing, but Porsche says that the necessary downforce at high speeds is guaranteed by an automatically extending rear spoiler. Exterior details include a rear lid grille with the logo ‘GT3 touring’ located over the engine. The trim strips of the side windows and the tailpipes of the sports exhaust system are silver-coloured. These elements are finished in satingloss Black in the optional Touring Package exterior in Black. On the inside, the 911 GT3 with Touring Package offers classic sports car styling with the steering wheel rim, gear/selector lever, cover of the centre console, armrests in the door panels and the door handles are covered in black leather. The partial leather interior features black stitching. The seat centre panels are covered with black fabric, and the roof liner is also black. The 911 GT3 with Touring Package is the foundation model for the new special edition variant exclusive to Australia – the 911 GT3 70 Years Porsche Australia Edition.

CUPRA AUSTRALIA DETAILS LOCAL LINE-UP FOR 2022 LAUNCH

UPRA AUSTRALIA HAS CUPRA Formentor announced its line-up for its 2022 launch with two SUVs and a hatchback, featuring a range of performance and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. The local launch line-up will comprise of three models – the CUPRA Formentor crossover SUV, the CUPRA Ateca SUV, and the CUPRA Leon hatchback. The Formentor and Leon models will be available with the choice of three petrol engines and as Plugin hybrids. The Ateca will be available with a 221kW petrol engine with 4DRIVE AWD. Australia will be the first market where CUPRA will operate exclusively as a performance brand. It is envisaged that the CUPRA range’s recommended retail pricing will start just north of $40,000 and finish just above $60,000. CUPRA Ateca To be sold online and via an agency structure, the brand will, the company says, be highly visible nationally via pop-up sales points and outlets based in existing high-profile retail environments. CUPRA vehicles will be able to be serviced within selected outlets of the Volkswagen Group network. They will be covered by a factory-backed, five-year/unlimited CUPRA Leon kilometre warranty. Details of service plans will be announced closer to the local launch. The Australian launch of the CUPRA brand and its line-up is planned for Q2 2022.

OYOTA HAS UNVEILED the nextgeneration LandCruiser – the first in 14 years for the venerable 4WD icon. Perhaps most notable among the many changes is that the LandCruiser will no longer be available with a V8 engine. However, a newly developed 3.3-litre, twin-turbo V6 diesel will debut in the new model delivering more power and torque than the V8 it replaces. Power output is up to 227kW (+13.5 per cent) and torque is up to 700Nm (+7.7 per cent). Toyota says it achieves noticeably lower fuel consumption and emissions, supported by a newly developed 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission. It has been reported that a 3.5-litre

twin-turbo petrol V6 engine with 305kW and 650Nm will be available in overseas markets but won’t be in Australia. Rumour suggest that a hybrid version will head this way sometime in the near future. The new-generation range is built on a new TNGA-F platform while maintaining a frame structure. Newly available is an electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (e-KDSS) which delivers on off-road performance through a larger suspension stroke achieved by effectively disabling the front and rear stabiliser bars. Other firsts for a Toyota vehicle include a new Multi-Terrain Monitor that displays obstacles as viewed from the driver’s viewpoint, and the adoption of a Multi-

Terrain Select function that automatically judges the road surface and selects the best driving mode. The latest Toyota Safety Sense active safety package for LandCruiser incorporates a pre-collision system that helps avoid a collision or reduce damage by detecting pedestrians (daytime and night-time) and cyclists (daytime). It can also detect oncoming vehicles at intersections and pedestrians crossing the street when the vehicle is turning. An emergency steering and crashavoidance function, which assists with steering and lane-keeping, is triggered when the driver performs a steering manoeuvre to avoid collision. The new 300 Series will include a GR Sport version – a sportier-looking model compared to the new upmarket styling of the regular variant.

STRONG JUNE RESULT for new vehicle sales has marked the end of the financial year - there were 110,664 sales according to VFACTS data revealed by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). The 2021 result is an increase of 430 vehicles – or 0.4 per cent – on the 2020 result. The new vehicle sales result for the first six months of 2021 was 567,468 compared with 442,415 for the corresponding period of 2020, an increase of 125,053 or 28.3 per cent. The Passenger Vehicle Market was down by 1,682 vehicle sales (-6.7 per cent) over the same month last year; the Sports Utility Market was up by 1,837 vehicle sales (3.5 per cent); the Light Commercial Market was down by 95 vehicle sales (-0.3 per cent); and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market was up by 370 vehicle sales (8 per cent) versus June 2020. Toyota was the market leader in June, recording sales of 21,076. It was followed by Mazda (12,225), Ford (8,456), Kia (7,890), and Hyundai (7,357). The Ford Ranger was the highest selling vehicle (6,058) followed by the Toyota Hi-Lux (5,412), the Isuzu Ute D-Max (3,167), Mazda CX-5 (3,018) and the Kia Cerato (2,711). FERRARI UNVEILS THE 296 GTB HYBRID

F

ERRARI RARELY PUTS a foot wrong when it comes to developing gorgeous cars that deliver outstanding performance. And with the unveiling of its newest supercar – the 296 GTB – the Italian company has shown once again that it can move with the times, embrace new technology, and still deliver. You see, the 296 GTB is a hybrid, pairing a V6 engine with an electric motor and 7.45 kWh battery set-up – the first time the company has done so on a road car. And the combination delivers thumping performance. The 2.9-litre V6 twin-turbo engine pumps out 484kW and when in combination with the electric motor, power

jumps up to 620Kw and 740Nm. That power is directed to the rear wheels through an eightspeed dual clutch transmission offering, Ferrari says, the fastest gear changes in the market. The company claims 100km/h can be reached in just 2.9 seconds,

and 200km/h in 7.3 seconds. Top speed is over 330km/h. Outstanding stuff. The electric part of the powertrain is powerful enough, Ferrari says, for a pureelectric range of 25km. Ferrari has focused hard on performance and driving dynamics. The 296 GTB wheelbase is some 50mm shorter than the F8 model Tributo and even with the additional battery and electric motor components, the use of innovative materials and a smaller engine, keeps the car pretty light. There’s also a new anti-lock braking ‘evo’ system and other new elements including a Transition Manager Actuator (TMA) and a 6-way Chassis Dynamic Sensor – a world first for the automotive sector. Aerodynamics are assisted by a suspended wing on the front – a tech reminiscent of that used in Formula One – and an active rear spoiler. There are brake cooling ducts beside the front

headlights and an interesting design feature is the new central tailpipe. On the inside, things are high-tech and futuristic, with digital instrumentation and plenty of leather, metal and carbon fibre used for the trim. The seats have been designed using a carbon fibre shell to keep the weight down. There’s a beefed-up version of the 296 GTB on offer too, with customers seeking to get even more out of the car able to select the Assetto Fiorano package. The 296 GTB Assetto Fiorano is even trimmer than the standard version thanks to extensive use of carbon fibre components and gets even more extreme handling thanks to a racing derived suspension. A new special livery car also be ordered exclusively for the Assetto Fiorano package.

MW WILL INTRODUCE the secondgeneration BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé to the Australian market at the end of this year. And, for the first time, the company will offer an M Performance model from the outset with the launch of the M440i xDrive variant. The BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé is powered by a six-cylinder TwinPower Turbo in-line petrol engine that develops 285kW and 500Nm. The TwinPower fourcylinder engine of the BMW 430i Gran Coupé develops 190kW and 400Nm, while the 420i gets135kW and 300Nm. All engines for the local market team up with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission controlled via shift paddles on the steering wheel or via the gear selector in the centre console.

Some 40 driver assistance functions are available in the 4 Series Gran Coupé, including Driving Assistant with lane departure warning, lane change warning, front collision warning with brake intervention, rear crossing traffic warning and rear collision prevention. Parking assistant including Reversing Assistant, Park Distance Control front and rear, Lateral Parking Aid and Rear-View Camera are also on the list of standard equipment items. Connectivity and digital services include BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, BMW Digital Key, Connected Music and Remote Software Upgrades. The standard-fitment BMW Live Cockpit Professional features a fully digital screen grouping including a high-resolution instrument cluster with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches behind the steering wheel and a 10.25-inch control display. Smartphone integration is standard, and drivers can use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto via the car’s operating system. A Remote Software Upgrades function will allow for over-the-air improvements to vehicle functions and the addition of other digital services.

Definition of a Resignation

Of critical importance

It is of critical importance with any resignation to remember that there must be a clear indication of the employee’s intention to resign. The resignation must specify a final date of the employment.

Proper notice by the employee - getting it in writing

The period of notice required to be given by the employee in terms of a resignation is provided in the relevant awards covering our sector. (This is the same period of notice that the employer is required to provide to the employee.)

What if the employee changes his or her mind?

Notice, once given by the employee cannot be withdrawn, except with the agreement of the employer. The reason for this is that if the employee could withdraw notice of resignation at any time, it could result in the replacement employee being left without a job, having already terminated the employment with the previous employer to accept the vacated position.

A common circumstance is an employee giving notice while absent on a period of leave, such as annual leave. The courts have indicated that an employee is entitled to give notice of resignation to the employer at any time, with the remainder of the period of the leave forming part of the notice period.

The prototype has been put through some bench and track tests and is being used to certify the reliability of the company’s fuel cell system – a system which will, the company claims, enable some impressive performance numbers. HOPIUM WAS FOUNDED BY RACING DRIVER OLIVIER LOMBARD – A 24 HOURS OF LE MAN WINNER IN THE LMP2 CLASS IN 2011 . . . company says, for 1000km of range, have 373kW on tap, have a top speed of 230km/h and be refilled in three minutes. Hopium was founded by racing driver Olivier Lombard – a 24 Hours of Le Man winner in the LMP2 Class in 2011 – and the Frenchman and his team certainly have an eye for design as the Machina is a beautiful-looking sedan. While the car is still some time away from being produced – Hopium has previously said it will be on the road in 2025 – those who are willing to wait for what looks like being a top-notch entrant in the luxury/performance zero emissions vehicle market can order one now, with Hopium opening the order book for 1000 units with a reservation price of just €410 ($AU650).

OMESTICALLY, THE S&P/ ASX 200 Accumulation Index was up 2.26% during the period. Information Technology (+13.4%) was the best performing sector. The market moves reflected the view that recent inflation outcomes could be transitory, meaning lower rates for longer and therefore positive for duration stocks. Communications (+5.6%) also outperformed, with the Telco’s lifting the sector on favourable industry dynamics. Financials (-0.2%) was the worst performing sector, in a direct reversal of the pro-cyclical trade last month. Materials (+0.3%) similarly suffered from the shift towards lower inflation, lower growth sentiment. Internationally, markets had mixed performance during the month. US markets led during the period (S&P 500 +2.2%, NASDAQ +5.6%), as technology companies rallied with the duration trade. Korean markets (KOSPI +2.9%) similarly benefitted from the thematic. Europe (MSCI Europe ex-UK +1.8%) and the UK (FTSE 100 +0.2%) continued their economic recovery, as the vaccine drive picks up pace. The remaining Asian bourses (CSI 300 +0.0, Nikkei 225 -0.2%, Hang Seng -1.1%) were more subdued, with virus flare-ups causing anxiety in the markets. Initial success at containing the virus has been threatened by lacklustre vaccination programs, prolonging the recovery period. 88 | Motor Trader July 2021
