HELLO AND WELCOME

to the March edition of Motor Trader.

Around this time last year, Motor Trader was attending the Fully Charged Live show in Sydney. It was the debut in Australia of the global electric vehicle (EV) and technology event and was a big success. This year, the event returned, renamed Everything Electric, with more exhibitors and a lot more EVs. While there were plenty of serious conversations about electrification in the many talks put on by organisers, the cars were the stars and attendees had the chance to test drive a variety of the EVs now available here. Motor Trader was able to pilot a handful of them

MTA

and we were impressed. There's no doubt the tech really is special. Read more from page 16.

Also this month we report from a Student and Industry career event held in Toowoomba at the beginning of March. The event brought together more than 40 school students (plus their parents) and automotive businesses and was the result of a partnership between MTA Queensland and Capricorn. There was lots of interest from students in what careers can be forged in automotive and it was brilliant to see the enthusiasm from everyone involved. These MTA Queensland/Capricorn events will be held around the state and are a great initiative as we look to secure the next generation of industry professionals. Read more from page 12.

I hope you enjoy this month's edition, and if you have any news to share, please contact me.

Cheers

WHAT A WHIRLWIND

start it has been to 2024! No sooner had we completed our hard push to ensure a reasonable outcome from the Queensland Government’s review of the Electrical Safety Act, the Federal Government dropped their impact assessment on a New Vehicle Efficiency Standard.

This critical piece of proposed legislation, which the Government is looking to rush through for a 1 January 2025 commencement, if done incorrectly has the potential to bring seismic change to the new car sector, and in turn, the wider automotive industry.

While we agree that a fuel efficiency standard is long overdue, the preferred option laid out by the Government needs significant amendment to ensure a fair transition that supports our Dealers. The proposed approach of reducing emissions by 60% by 2030 is simply too aggressive and has not been attempted anywhere in the world.

. . . THE PREFERRED OPTION LAID OUT BY THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS SIGNIFICANT AMENDMENT . . .

Together with representatives from the MTAA and other state Associations, we engaged directly with Ministers and officials both in Canberra and Queensland to assert our position.

Our argument, which can be viewed in our joint industry submission HERE, is that if we are to use the U.S fuel efficiency model as a basis for our own, we must adopt their approach in full, specifically:

• following the same emissions trajectory

• aligning with the same vehicle categorization

• incorporating credit generators, pooling, low-volume exemptions and carve-outs

• establishing a regime to incentivize consumers to buy EVs With the consultation period now closed, I strongly urge all Dealers to consider writing to or visiting their local Member of Parliament to share their concerns and ensure their voice is heard prior to any decision about the fuel efficiency standard being made. We will continue to update our members as we receive communication going forward.

AS ROD ALLUDED to, it has been an incredibly active start to the year here at MTA Queensland. Our School to Work team recently travelled west as we hosted Auto Careers Networking events in partnership with Capricorn Society at their local Tradeshows in Toowoomba and Roma.

These events serve as a connector between local high-school students and job seekers looking to learn more about the career opportunities available and local automotive employers in the area who are seeking employees and apprentices. We were excited to see such strong interest, particularly in Toowoomba where over 40 students attended, and I strongly encourage our members to get involved in these events to showcase their business to the future professionals of our industry.

. . . THIS MONTH WE SUCCESSFULLY HOSTED OUR FIRST AUTO WOMEN SOCIAL EVENT FOR THE YEAR IN TOWNSVILLE, WITH 30 LADIES COMING ALONG TO CATCH UP AND CONNECT!

In other news, I am incredibly happy to report that earlier this month we successfully hosted our first Auto Women Social event for the year in Townsville, with 30 ladies coming along to catch up and connect! We are excited to bring this concept to more areas around Queensland to allow the women in our industry the opportunity to meet and establish a local community group. Our next event is scheduled for Mackay in April and you can keep up to date on our upcoming events by joining the Auto Women Facebook group.

And finally, we have had some great discussions in our opening divisional industry meetings for 2024. These meetings have served as an opportunity to identify the critical facing our divisions and allow us to formulate an action plan to address these challenges.

If you are yet to RSVP for the upcoming industry meeting for your division, you can do so by emailing info@mtaq.com.au

Josh and Chiquita Pease have a thriving mechanic workshop on the outskirts of Malanda on the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland. They have built it up from a home-based business in their shed in Tarzali, to a young team with bookings up to five weeks in advance. Josh took some time out of his busy day to chat to Motor Trader about JP Repairs and Maintenance.

WORDS & IMAGES : LARA WILDE

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE INDUSTRY?

JP: I did my light vehicle mechanic apprenticeship with MTA Queensland from 2001 to 2005 under Mick Bryant at Tableland Mechanical

Services in Malanda. Once I finished my apprenticeship, I spent eight years in mines all over Queensland specialising in blast hole drill rigs. Eventually the novelty of mining life wore off and I came home.

MTA
Q&A

HOW LONG HAS JP REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE BEEN ESTABLISHED?

JP: We first opened the doors to JP Repairs and Maintenance at our house in Tarzali in 2015. We moved the workshop to Malanda in November of 2023, and it has been the best move for our business. Having an office has been a gamechanger for our business. Instead of doing our invoices at night at the dining room table, we can separate our business and our family.

TELL US ABOUT THE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES YOU OFFER AT JP REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE?

JP: Our bread and butter is the everyday mechanical repairs, maintenance and logbook servicing for ordinary passenger vehicles. When we were based in Tarzali, we provided mobile roadworthy inspections. With the new workshop, I am trying to move us to only doing roadworthy

“OUR BREAD AND BUTTER IS THE EVERYDAY MECHANICAL REPAIRS, MAINTENANCE AND LOGBOOK SERVICING FOR ORDINARY PASSENGER VEHICLES.”

inspections in the workshop. We focus on giving every customer the personal touch and making sure they know we really care about them and their car.

WHO IS IN YOUR CURRENT TEAM?

JP: I am on the tools in the workshop while my wife Chiquita manages the business from the office. Natasha is parttime, providing general administration support to Chiquita in the office. Seth is our second-year apprentice who started with us in early 2022 as a school-based apprentice. Kynan has just started his

second year as an apprentice and also started his career in the JP Repairs and Maintenance workshop. Luke does three days per week after school and Kye does two days per week after school. Both boys help out with odd jobs like pressure cleaning, sweeping and tidying up. We also have Kieran who does some schoolwork experience.

DO YOU SPONSOR ANY LOCAL SPORT TO PROMOTE THE BUSINESS?

JP: We are big supporters of the Malanda Junior Rugby League, the Malanda Eels for local competition. I am the Club President and I volunteer on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to coach under-14s and run the club. JP Repairs and Maintenance sponsors the players’ jerseys. Sponsoring the Malanda Junior Rugby League is our key marketing strategy and community engagement to reach customers in town.

WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES DO YOU DO TO MAKE JP REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE STAND OUT IN THE MARKET?

JP: A part of making sure that every customer gets the personal touch is washing every car and shining their tyres before they leave the workshop. It only takes a minute, but it shows our customers that we really do care for their vehicles

“WE ARE PLANNING TO CONTINUE TO GROW THE BUSINESS AND SUPPORT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. I WANT OUR TWO APPRENTICES TO COMPLETE THEIR TRADE AND THEN I WILL LOOK AT SIGNING ON MORE APPRENTICES ONCE THEY HAVE FINISHED.”

and are proud of the cars that leave our shed. It is a point of difference and something customers appreciate.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR JP REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

JP: We are planning to continue to grow the business and support the local community. I want our two apprentices to complete their trade and then I will look at signing on more apprentices once they have finished.

WHAT TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DO YOU DO WITH STAFF?

JP: I make sure all of our staff, including myself, do any training that is available in our region, including all of the courses supplied by providers like Burson and Capricorn.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST BENEFIT OF YOUR MTA QUEENSLAND MEMBERSHIP?

JP: Late last year, we became a member after meeting with the local representative. I already knew about MTA Queensland as I did my apprenticeship with them. I signed up as a member because I was looking for support and industry development such as regulation of roadworthy certificates and advocacy for the smaller workshops.

HOW MUCH IMPORTANCE DO YOU PLACE ON SOCIAL MEDIA FOR MARKETING FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

JP: I am not a huge fan of social media because I don’t like the keyboard warriors. I mostly use it for notices such as public holiday closures. Our main marketing is signage on the building and our vehicles, sponsorship of the Junior Rugby League Club, and word of mouth from our customers. It seems to be working as we are booked out five weeks in advance.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE GREATEST ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

JP: The greatest advancement for our

business has been having an office with instant payment options. The ability for customers to pay their bill when they pick up their vehicle has helped cashflow significantly. The previous home workshop always sent invoices after the customer picked up their car and had seven-days payment terms.

I also like the scan tools, Autodata, and Capricorn for stock.

WHAT VEHICLES DO YOU OWN?

JP: The shop truck is a 2019 Dodge Ram. We also have a sign-written 1981 Datsun Ute to promote the shop, but it is coming off the road soon for a rebuild. At home I have a 2007 VE HSV Senator Signature, a 1977 G60 Patrol, and a 750cc 1999 Ducati Monster.

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES?

JP: Managing the workload and stress is a challenge. I love the job and bounce out of bed every day eager to work with our team and to support our customers, but it is full on and finding time for family and community can be challenging.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR SPARE TIME?

JP: Volunteer with local rugby,

“OUR MAIN MARKETING IS SIGNAGE ON THE BUILDING AND OUR VEHICLES, SPONSORSHIP OF THE JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB, AND WORD OF MOUTH FROM OUR CUSTOMERS.”

caravan, and camping. Supporting two children. The staff and I also do plenty of social motocross and trail riding but nothing on a competition level.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG JOSH STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?

JP: Grit your teeth because it’s tough. Be respectful. Do it because you love it and not just because you are going to get out of school or because someone told you to. I always tell the boys that “every vehicle that leaves the shop has to be something we can all be proud of. Every car needs to be clean, all of the items need to be checked off and every part of the car needs to be looked over.”

MTAQ & CAPRICORN PARTNER ON CAREERS EXPOS FOR SCHOOL STUDENTS

FINDING SOLUTIONS TO the continuing challenge of the skills and workforce shortage within the automotive industry is a top priority for MTA Queensland.

Along with the many programs and initiatives already underway to tackle this issue – including training courses such as Auto Ready, the Automotive Jobs Queensland platform, and the dedicated staff ready to assist businesses with employments issues via the Association’s Workforce Solutions programs – this year, MTA Queensland has teamed up with Capricorn to deliver student-industry careers expos across the State.

These expos, which tie in with Capricorn trade shows, kicked off at the beginning of March in Roma and Toowoomba. Both events proved to be a success with the Toowoomba event being particularly

“WE ARE DOING THESE EVENTS BECAUSE THIS IS A BIG PART OF OUR SCHOOLTO-WORK TRANSITION STRATEGY TO INCREASE THE SUPPLY OF NEW PEOPLE COMING INTO OUR INDUSTRY.”

Taken around the expo by MTA Queensland and Capricorn representatives, the students were able to meet and ask questions of the many businesses and suppliers, both local and national, that were showcasing their products and technologies, as well as get an idea of the local opportunities and career options available. MTA Queensland was there to give plenty of advice on training and apprenticeship programs

“We are doing these events because this is a big part of our school-to-work transition strategy to increase the supply of new people coming into our industry,” said Brad Flanagan, Director of Industry Initiatives for MTA Queensland. “So we get kids from the local region - school students and their parents - we take them around, introduce them to different suppliers from the industry, and they get to hear directly from industry practitioners. They get to hear directly from automotive technicians and people who are in sales

teams, and people from managerial teams, and hear all about automotive careers and where an automotive apprenticeship and automotive career can take them in life. It’s good to introduce the kids but also their parents. We have found that it is really important - when you want to attract young people into the industry - to also capture the interest of their parents as well.”

For Capricorn, and its members who attend these events, the chance to team up with MTA Queensland and grab the interest of school students looking for the opportunity to start a career is very important. According to Adam Cohen, Capricorn's Sales Manager for Queensland, every business is feeling the pressure of the skills shortage and hopes that will ease as young people join the industry.

“Our partnership with MTAQ is very important to Capricorn because MTAQ is the voice of our industry” said Adam. “So it was really important that we got together with Brad - Brad was instrumental in putting this together - so that we could really support our members, and bring that next generation into the industry.”

Amongst the dozens of Capricorn

March 2024 Motor Trader | 13

members at the expo was Precision Automotive Equipment, which supplies, distributes and services a comprehensive range of workshop equipment across the country. It too recognises the skills crisis affecting the industry and the positive move that the career expo represents.

“It is good to see so many kids come through this afternoon. It gives us a chance to show them what our industry is like, what the opportunities are like and hopefully fix that skill set problem that we are facing at the moment. They are the future, and it can only go up from here,” said Robert Reeves, Key Account Manager at Precision Automotive Equipment.

“I can’t believe how attentive they were, especially when we showed them how to balance a wheel . . . They were certainly engaged, and it was interactive – it was fantastic.”

The breadth of products and services that businesses at the expo offered was, perhaps, a reason for that enthusiasm. There is more to the automotive industry than the business of hands-on vehicle maintenance and repair, and the range of suppliers - of all manner of tools and equipment - at the expo was proof to the

students of the very wide range of careers that can be pursued in the industry, And the students’ enthusiasm was clear to see, with plenty of questions being asked of the exhibitor businesses and enquiries made about jobs and apprenticeships.

“I came here today and was looking for just a general knowledge of automotive, but I came and found all these different new opportunities that I could get involved in and it has given me a lot of things to think about,” said Stephanie Taylor, a 15-year-old student from Harristown State High School.

“I think I have always been interested in doing the hands-on mechanic job but, coming here today, I think a parts interpreter has really caught my imagination and I love that opportunity and it has really sparked something that I could do.

“After being here and experiencing all these new opportunities . . . I love the idea of getting into automotive and I cannot wait to begin a schoolbased apprenticeship.”

MTA Queensland’s partnership with Capricorn on these

Student/Industry Careers expos looks set to continue with several more pencilled in for locations across the state, including in Cairns and Bundaberg.

“We think that by making these valuable connections, it’s more than putting an ad on Seek, more than putting an ad on Indeed - you get to make a personal connection with young people that really want to join this exciting industry,” said Brad.

“We will be out there all over Queensland connecting young people looking for work with employers looking for workers. So get involved and keep an eye on our website as there will be plenty more opportunities.”

VIDEO: STUDENT/INDUSTRY CAREERS EXPO, TOOWOOMBA

AYEAR AGO, IN March 2023, the Fully Charged Live Australia debuted in Australia. Held at the International Convention Centre, more than 14,000 people visited the event which was arguably the first large-scale electric vehicle (and clean energy) show to be held in the country. It showcased a broad range of electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy technology, as well as held panel discussions on subjects that ranged across issues around electrification.

IN FEBRUARY THIS YEAR, THE SHOW WAS BACK DOWN UNDER, REBADGED AS EVERYTHING ELECTRIC AND NOW HELD AT SYDNEY SHOWGROUND –A BIGGER VENUE TO HANDLE MORE EXHIBITORS AND LARGER CROWDS.

For those that don’t know, the Fully Charged Live show was born out of the Fully Charged YouTube channel founded by UK writer, broadcaster, and actor Robert Llewellyn. The popularity of that channel, which now has more than one million subscribers, prompted Llewellyn and his team to launch the live show events, which have been enthusiastically welcomed everywhere they have been held. And it is now a global event, with shows being held in North America, across Europe, the UK and Australia.

In February this year, the show was back Down Under, rebadged as Everything Electric and now held at Sydney Showground – a bigger venue to handle more exhibitors and larger crowds.

And it was substantially bigger.

Organisers say 17,440 people attended the show which offered displays and information on subjects such as home energy, solar power, charging infrastructure and more. However, the cars were the stars, and of particular interest to visitors was the chance not only to view an impressive range of EVs - either now on offer in Australia or

soon to be – but to test drive them too.

Amongst those were models from Peugeot, Polestar, Audi, GWM, Kia, BMW, MG, BYD, Tesla and Genesis. Hyundai were there too with its EV models, including its new performance beast, the Ioniq 5 N (read more about that on page 48), while Renault debuted its new Megane E-Tech. An estimated 5000 test drives were held over the course of the three-day show.

EVs not available to test drive but still on display included the beautiful Lotus Eletre SUV and a very nice-looking newcomer to the scene, the Skywell EVA 5 SUV –presented by Brisbane-based company EV Automotive which also had on display its range of electric commercial vans.

As well as the vehicles, products and services that were showcased, a busy schedule of panel discussions and Q&A sessions were held, featuring experts from the auto industry, the tech sector and the media. A huge variety of topics were discussed, with EVs as their focus, and sessions ran across each day and in two theatres with titles such as What’s next in the energy and transport transition?,

March 2024 Motor Trader | 17

EV Mythbusting, Vehicle to Everything –what’s the true potential?, and Electric car conversions – big business opportunity or custom market only?

Amongst the many interesting takes and points made during these discussions, a couple stood out. During the session called When it comes to energy & transport, what will the world look like in 2035?, the panellists considered the possibility that Australia had ‘captured’ those that were intrigued with EV technology and had become early adopters, and now had to turn its attention to ‘mass adopters’ – those for whom technology was of no particular interest but who want things that are simple to use and who do care about cost, comfort and convenience. This, it was suggested, was where companies were focusing.

That does make sense. However, in a period where the technology – from charging infrastructure to driver assistance features to the use of EVs in such cases as vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-grid scenarios – is still being developed, it will be interesting to see how things are sold to those mass adopters.

Vehicle-to-grid technology was highlighted as one of the near-future big steps forward for the sector during the What’s next in the Energy Transition? panel discussion. While regulatory and tech issues were, the panel said, still to be ironed out, the potential upside to the tech is tremendous. This was

Chris Bowen, Minister for Climate Change and Energy

partly confirmed by a report released by ARENA, Australia’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency, not long after the Everything Electric event. Key findings in the report suggested that EVs utilised to supply the grid and its Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS) - which is used to balance the grid and keep the amount of electricity being sent into it matching the amount needed by consumers – could lead to

Everything Electric was held at Sydney Showground

significant earnings.

Amongst the reports key findings were that:

• The average electric vehicle could have earned $12,000 participating in the NSW FCAS raise regulation market or $2,600 in the NSW FCAS raise 60-second contingency market, based on 2022 data; and

• The average electric vehicle could earn $9,000 from participating in the NSW FCAS lower regulation market, or $2,000 from participating in the NSW FCAS lower 60-second contingency market, based on 2022 data;

You can read that ARENA report by clicking HERE, but can chalk those findings up as another compelling reason to consider EV ownership.

While there were more than 40 discussions and presentations held across the Everything Electric show, one unscheduled appearance did occur on the Saturday, when the Hon. Chris Bowen, Minister for Climate Change and Energy, made a short address to a packed auditorium.

The Minister took to the stage just a few days after the Commonwealth Government had announced its plans to introduce a New Vehicle Emissions Standards to

the Australian market, and Mr Bowen referenced that emission standard and why he felt it was important it be established.

“I want to see more choices for more people to buy the sorts of cars that are available here today,” he said. “. . . here we are at Everything Electric on the same week that we've announced that we will no longer be alongside Russia as the only major country without vehicle efficiency standards.

“We will fix that, and we will catch up with the United States by 2028. Not everyone is happy about it. We're getting plenty of push back, but it's the right thing to do and we are not going to stop giving Australians those sorts of choices and we will push it through. While there was plenty to see and plenty to learn about electrification at the show, the highlight was, of course, the cars, and amongst the thousands of people able to get in and test drive the many EV models

on hand, Motor Trader queued up and managed to bag a seat and a few minutes of test-driving time in a handful of the cars too.

While a 20-minute test drive is hardly enough time to make a considered review of any car, one thing we can say is it that the vehicles we did drive – the Hyundai Ioniq 6, the MG 4 XPower, and the Renault Megane E-Tech – all made tremendous first impressions.

Firstly, they all looked great, with really lovely styling. Each was comfortable, responsive, smooth, and easy to drive. The controls and levels of information, of which there is quite a lot to absorb through touchscreens and displays, seemed simple enough to grasp.

For what it’s worth, the Ioniq 6 seemed, as you might expect from Hyundai, flawless and the Renault was similarly terrific, with a very nice interior and wonderfully designed display interfaces on its two screens. But it was the MG4 XPower that stole our heart. With the correct drive mode selected and 320kW/600NM of grunt on hand we looked to test the claim that the XPower could reach 100km/h in 3.8 seconds. No speeding laws were broken, of course, but safe to say the immense power – it is quite shocking for the uninitiated – suggests that 3.8 second mark would be easily reached. It really is quite something.

Amongst the many exhibitors at this

year’s Everything Electric was MTA Queensland member Graeme Manietta of Oz Electric Vehicles. For more than 15 years, Graeme has been working with, upgrading, converting and maintaining EVs, and in recent years the Oz Electric team have developed an upgrade system for the Mitsubishi i-Miev, one of the early mass-produced electric vehicles that was first available to the public in 2009.

That upgrade boosts the i-Miev from a 16kWh battery and 47kW motor set-up offering a range of between 100-160km, to an altogether more potent machine with a 30kWh pack offering a range of 250+km. New features added by Oz Electric include one-pedal driving, hill hold, and cruise control.

It’s a great value upgrade, said Graeme.

“Our policy is always to never go for like-for-like but always value-add,” he said. “We will always aim to come in at the same cost as a brand-new factory pack but with more range and more options.”

The Oz Electric Vehicles i-Miev upgrade program is now available internationally, with official installers in several European countries, North America, as well as in Australia and New Zealand taking advantage of the technology. And the upgrade of aging electrified vehicles is expanding, with Graeme and his team soon to go live with systems for the Nissan

Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

“Right now, the Outlander is getting its final programming done,” said Graeme of the development process. “We are looking at around the 99km EV-only range . . . the original range was about 50km, with the battery going from 12 to 18kWh.

“In the Leaf, we are getting about 300km of range from the new battery pack. Originally, they were either 24 or 30kWh . . . we are increasing them to 52kWh.

“The i-Miev was a good start for us as it was the car with the most need at the time, but now we are seeing high demand for new packs for the Leaf and the Outlander.”

“THE I-MIEV WAS A GOOD START FOR US AS IT WAS THE CAR WITH THE MOST NEED AT THE TIME. BUT NOW WE ARE SEEING HIGH DEMAND FOR NEW PACKS FOR THE LEAF AND THE OUTLANDER.”

This focus on the i-Miev has brought Graeme and his business some tremendous publicity, with the team at the Fully Charged YouTube channel making a trip to Brisbane to interview him about the technology and his business for an episode of their show. The channel founder, Robert Llewellyn – who is a fan of the i-Miev from way back, having had one when it first launched – was on hand to ask the question and seemed genuinely excited that the car he once drove was

SAVIC MOTORCYCLES EYES NEW MODELS AND INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION AS PRODUCTION CRANKS UP

ELECTRIC CARS MAY make most of the headlines when it comes to the electrification of the auto industry, but motorcycles are undergoing the same revolution, and there are Australian businesses making their mark in the sector.

Savic Motorcycles is one such business. The Melbourne-based company was an exhibitor at Everything Electric and made news last month when its first Victorian customer rode its C-Series bike. The C-Series is a real stunner – a classic café racer style machine. It is available in two variants – Alpha or Delta – with the Alpha packing 60kW/200Nm, a 16.3kWh battery delivering 200+km of range, and a 0-100km/h time of 3.4 seconds. The Delta comes in with 40kW/140Nm, a 13.4kWh battery, and a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds. Both come with the functions and features you’d expect on a modern electric vehicle – including multiple ride modes, ABS, traction control and regenerative braking, over-the-air update functionality, and so on.

The company has 229 pre-orders for the bike – most of them for the more potent Alpha model – and has a busy year of production ahead of them. Beyond that, there are big plans afoot, including the introduction of more features for the C-Series, development of new models and a potential move to start marketing the C-Series internationally. Also on the cards this year is the production of demo bikes to be taken around the country, including Brisbane, for people to get a chance to have a test ride.

“This year will definitely be a year of learning. We'll get these bikes out to our customers and we'll find out that feedback

22 | Motor Trader March 2024

through test rides as well so that we continue the development of the C-series,” said

Alexandra Bromley,

Motorcycles Chief Marketing Officer. “We're also looking to develop our technology roadmaps. We develop all our software in-house and there's a lot of really cool features that we want to implement on the C-series.

“Each C-series has a 4G modem and over 100 data points. So we can do overthe-air updates, upgrades, predictive maintenance, and there are some really cool tech features that we're looking at.

“We're also already in the process of developing some other models as well. The C-series is built on what we call the SM1 platform - our high-performance platform - and with a few little tweaks, we can change the ergonomics in the design of the bike to put out something a little bit different because we know not everyone will be into the cafe racer - everyone's kind of got a personal preference.”

Road bikes will be the focus for the company as it develops those new models.

“We are looking at a couple of different styles of road bike on the SM1 platform,” said Alexandra. “And then we're also developing another platform called the SM2, which is going to be lighter, a smaller

battery, be at a lower price point and be more of that entry-level of electric. So it'll be great for learners, and be that small inner-city runaround.”

As for the ambition to go international, it would seem that the UK may be among Savic Motorcycles first ports of call.

“We are definitely talking about it,” said Alexandra. “The UK has quite a low barrier to entry and there are a lot of new start-ups over there and it's a very exciting space to play in and electric sales just keep growing year on year. It's also where the cafe racer was born too.

“So we are developing a road map to expand into the UK, and we are looking at around 2025. We'll go to New Zealand as well and then, depending on how everything goes in the UK, we'll start expanding into Europe as well.

“We definitely have quite large aspirations of becoming global as well.”

Whatever timeline eventually pans out for Savic Motorcycles expansion, it’s heartening to see an Australian company with such ambition, and if you’re interested in test-riding a Savic C-Series motorcycle, click HERE to sign-up to the company’s newsletter where info on demo tour dates will be announced.

getting a new lease on life. The YouTube show also acknowledged the other aspect of Graeme’s business – that batteries are recycled for use in applications such as power walls.

With more than 73,000 views (at time of writing) since the episode was posted on the Fully Charged YouTube channel, the publicity for Grame and Oz Electric Vehicles is priceless.

“There has been a lot of genuine enquiries come out of that,” said Graeme. “Our installer in Holland got bookings straight away from somebody in England . . . and there has been interest from other countries too.”

The episode’s genesis came thanks to a chance meeting and casual chat with Llewellyn at last year’s Fully Charged Live show, at which Graeme was an exhibitor.

“He was coming around and I got to introduce myself and I said, “I hear you like i-Mievs?’. He said he did, and I told him I had one that does 250km and I had upgraded the batteries,” said Graeme. “I gave him my card, told him to look up my

website when he had time and let’s chat.

“Several months went by and I forgot all about it and then, all of a sudden, I get an email from the Fully Charged team that they wanted to do it. I was a bit sceptical, but the day arrived and so did Robert Llewellyn, and it all happened.

“It is great publicity, absolutely. I mentioned that we are currently doing Nissans and Outlanders and we had a heap of email about Nissans and Outlanders! It’s just a matter of keeping that data and following up when we can. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us!”

The Everything Electric Show is set to return to Sydney in March 2025.

STORM BREAKS OUT OVER FUEL EFFICIENCY STANDARD

LAST MONTH, THE Commonwealth Government revealed its plan to introduce a New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES).

It announced that its preferred option is a ‘fast but flexible approach’ that would launch from the start of 2025 and see Australia chase a total CO₂ intensity reduction target of 61 per cent in passenger vehicles and 62 per cent reduction for light commercial vehicles by 2029.

So, from January next year, should this version of the NVES go through, carmakers must start lowering the emissions of their entire fleet. There are no vehicles that they cannot sell, but those that do emit more than the efficiency standard will have to be offset by zero- and low-emission vehicles in their fleet, bringing down the average overall emissions.

If they beat the target, they receive credits. If they don’t beat the target, they will pay a penalty – a stiff $100 per g/km of CO₂ (number of grams of carbon dioxide emitted by a vehicle per kilometre) over the standard – or they can buy credits from others that have beaten the target.

Things moved quickly after the Government's announcement. A few days later the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) - the organisation that represents vehicle makers and distributors in Australia – suggested that analysis of the government’s preferred NVES option would see the price of some of the nation’s most popular vehicles rise considerably - some by thousands of dollars.

Why? Because some companies won't be able to adjust their fleets by the 2025 deadline, meaning they won't meet the NVES target, meaning they will be penalised and likely pass that cost on to the Australian consumer.

The media pounced quickly on this notion of unaffordable price rises and it began to gather steam, generating headlines and animated political debate.

The FCAI attracted the ire of groups that disagreed with its numbers - and the method for reaching those numbers - and attracted dissent from within as well. At time of writing, two of its members - Tesla and Polestar - were reportedly withdrawing from the FCAI, while the Volkswagen Group was rumoured to be considering similar action.

However, the FCAI is not an outlier in its concerns over the government's preferred NVES plan. Other industry bodies, as well as some vehicles manufacturers, have concerns too. Isuzu Ute Australia, for example, which sells the diesel-powered D-Max ute and M-UX SUV, released a statement which, amongst other concerns, said that proposed penalties for not meeting emissions targets are excessive and that 'Vehicle brands that cannot increase vehicle pricing to cover the penalties may be left with no option but to

26 | Motor Trader March 2024

exit the Australian market . . . '.

That is extraordinary.

The truth is, despite the seemingly growing bitterness, everyone agrees that some form of NVES is required. The stumbling blocks are in the details.

For example, the Government’s preferred NEVS option splits vehicles into two groups – Passenger Vehicles and Light Commercial Vehicles. The Passenger Vehicle segment includes SUVs and most 4WDs and the emissions target here is tougher than for the Light Commercial Vehicles segment. Can classifying a large-SUV (or 4x4) such as a LandCruiser or M-UX into the same bracket as, for example, a Corolla be right?

For its part, MTA Queensland, while fully supportive of an NVES, has joined with its fellow MTAs and the national Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) in advocating for amendments to the proposed Standard.

These changes would include the categorisation of large SUVs into the Light Commercial Vehicle segment; the availability of 'super credits' (whereby a manufacturer is given more credits for zero- or low-emission vehicles which come in way under any CO2 target); and the enabling of 'pooling' (which allows carmakers to band together their fleets to form one group to meet targets).

These measures, among others, are part of the MTAA's submission to the government which, up until March 4 was accepting such documentation as it considers its next steps.

MTA Queensland is seeking a fair transition with achievable targets, and the fact that the government is willing to keep the discussion going is a good thing. And, if one can divine anything from politicians when interviewed on national television, perhaps there is a chance that the government will bend to implement an NVES that is more palatable to many within the industry.

On the ABC Insiders program broadcast on March 10, Chris Bowen, Minister for Climate Change and Energy, gave some insight into the submissions received so far. While saying the majority that he and Catherine King, (Minister for Infrastructure, Tranport, Regional Development and Local Government) had received either agree with the preferred model or call for it to go further, the Minister did seem to concede some flexibility.

. . . Catherine and I chose to consult. We didn’t have to. We could have just introduced this legislation," he said. "We chose to consult because we want to make sure we have hoovered up all the good ideas about how to implement this.

"So where an idea has been made to us, sensibly, we will consider it sensibly, in

THE TRUTH IS, DESPITE THE SEEMINGLY GROWING BITTERNESS, EVERYONE AGREES THAT SOME FORM OF NVES IS REQUIRED. THE STUMBLING BLOCKS ARE IN THE DETAILS.

good faith, to help the implenetation of what is a big and complicated policy space.

"If people come along and say, listen, we understand why you are trying to do this and here is our idea as to how you could do it most easily and how – whether its dealers or other people – how we could most sensibly comply, of course, where it has been designed to help us implement this and enhance implementation . . . Catherine and I take an approach of consultation, of careful calibration with industry . . . "

That sounds hopeful. We will see where the consultation process leads and keep you up to date through MTA Queensland's media channels, weekly newsletter and through Motor Trader.

CONTINENTAL INTRODUCES ECONTACT TYRE FOR EVS

CONTINENTAL TYRES HAS announced the launch of the new eContact EVdedicated tyre in Australia.

Continental says the eContact is formulated to handle the increased weight and instantaneous torque delivery of electric vehicles (EVs), and is equipped with various innovations including ContiSeal and ContiSilent.

THE COMPANY SAYS THAT PUNCTURE PROTECTION, IN THE FORM OF CONTISEAL, PROVIDES PEACE OF MIND FOR EV DRIVERS WHO HAVE HAD TO FORGO A SPARE TYRE.

REPORTS SAY EURO NCAP TO PENALISE VEHICLES WITH TOUCHSCREEN CONTROLS

AN INTERESTING STORY out of Europe this month, and one that might make those who yearn for the days when switches and buttons were used to control a vehicle’s functions. In reports out of the UK and Europe, Euro NCAP – the European New Car Assessment Programme which is the equivalent to Australia’s ANCAP – is set to encourage manufacturers to use tactile switches and the like for certain functions in an attempt to limit the time a driver has their eyes off the road and working a touchscreen.

The reports suggest that from January

2026, points may be deducted from a new vehicle’s safety score should those functions not be able to be controlled via such physical controls.

Euro NCAP and ANCAP have strong ties and in November last year signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to cement those connections and pave the way for closer collaboration in the future. We will see if such a relationship means the touchscreen/physical controls question is raised here down the track.

28 | Motor Trader March 2024

The company says that puncture protection, in the form of ContiSeal, provides peace of mind for EV drivers who have had to forgo a spare tyre. It says the technology includes a sticky, viscous sealant layer that can instantly seal 80 per cent of punctures up to 5mm in diameter.

ContiSilent technology is designed to deliver a quieter ride, with Continental saying that a ContiSilent tyre contains a polyether-based foam within the inner surface of the tyre tread that acts as a noise absorber. It pairs up with ‘acoustically optimised tread pattern design and partition-type technology’ to block the path of sound waves and inhibit tyre noise.

DYMAG SHOWCASES NEW LIGHTWEIGHT CARBON HYBRID WHEEL ON HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 N NPX1 CONCEPT

All of this is combined with a blade edge pattern and asymmetric sipe geometry that enables better wet-handling and braking performance. Added to all that, the eContact is designed to offer lower rolling resistance for a longer driving range.

Continental says the eContact can be fitted to a wide range of EVs, including Tesla, Polestar, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and MG and is now available for purchase at all major Australian tyre retailers.

DYMAG, A UK-BASED manufacturer of lightweight wheels for the automotive industry, and its composites material specialist Hankuk Carbon, have showcased a new carbon hybrid wheel on the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N NPX1 concept.

The NPX1 is a real-world technology demonstrator, previewing a range of N Performance Parts including Dymag’s lightweight carbon hybrid wheels.

Blending a composite outer rim, made from carbon fibre, with a forged metallic centrepiece, Dymag says its carbon hybrid wheel expertise realises the best of both materials and in addition to significantly reduced unsprung mass, the technology also reduces rolling inertia and offers improved stiffness and strength.

For the NPX1 wheel, bespoke designed for Hyundai, Dymag created a new 21-inch-high performance wheel with a five-spoke forged aluminium centrepiece painted Satin Black. Combined with the carbon fibre outer rim, the N Performance wheel weighs under 10kg, some 7kg less than a traditional cast alloy version.

Dymag says it is also in advanced stages with other carmakers on further OE supply agreements.

U.S. TO INVESTIGATE NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT POSED BY CONNECTED VEHICLES

THE U.S. GOVERNMENT has announced it is to investigate the potential risks to national security that may arise from connected vehicles that use technology that comes from ‘countries of concern’.

“Most cars these days are “connected” – they are like smart phones on wheels. These cars are connected to our phones, to navigation systems, to critical infrastructure, and to the companies that made them,” said President Biden in a statement. “Connected vehicles from China could collect sensitive data about our citizens and our infrastructure and send this data back to the People’s Republic of China. These vehicles could be remotely accessed or disabled . . . ”

“So today, I am announcing unprecedented actions to ensure that cars on U.S. roads from countries of concern like China do not undermine our national security. I have directed my Secretary of Commerce to conduct an investigation into connected vehicles with technology from countries of concern and to take action to respond to the risks.”

The U.S. Department of Commerce issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) seeking public comment as it considers potential regulations on the matter.

“It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to

“WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE EXTENT OF THE TECHNOLOGY IN THESE CARS THAT CAN CAPTURE WIDE SWATHS OF DATA OR REMOTELY DISABLE OR MANIPULATE CONNECTED VEHICLES . . .”

think of how foreign government with access to connected vehicles could pose a serious risk to both our national security and the personal privacy of U.S. citizens.” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo in a press release.

“We need to understand the extent of the technology in these cars that can capture wide swaths of data or remotely disable or manipulate connected vehicles . . .”

NEW INEOS OFF-ROAD MODEL TO BE AVAILABLE AS EV OR HYBRID

INEOS AUTOMOTIVE, THE manufacturer behind the well-received Grenadier off-roader, has unveiled its new 4X4 vehicle, the Fusilier.

INEOS Fusilier

The new vehicle, developed in conjunction with Austrian vehicle and component builder Magna, is set to be the company’s first battery electric vehicle (BEV), but is also be available with a hybrid set-up – a range-extender system consisting of a small petrol engine that powers a generator to maintain the charge level of the battery for when external charging isn’t available.

Slightly shorter and lower than the Grenadier, the Fusilier will, the company says, be built on a bespoke, skateboard platform, have a steel ‘top hat’ and underbody, and aluminium doors and closures. Not too much other information has been shared, with INEOS saying that confirmation of the alternative powertrain details and launch timings is expected by autumn 2024. However, it can be assumed that the company’s founder, British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, will be put as much energy and care into the creation of the Fusilier as he apparently did with the Grenadier. Certainly he can see a need for his company to cater to a variety of possible uses when it comes to his vehicles.

“As we developed this vehicle, we quickly concluded that in order to move towards decarbonisation but continue making cars

“AS WE DEVELOPED THIS VEHICLE, WE QUICKLY CONCLUDED THAT IN ORDER TO MOVE TOWARDS DECARBONISATION BUT CONTINUE MAKING CARS THAT CONSUMERS WANT TO DRIVE, WE NEED A MIX OF POWERTRAIN TECHNOLOGIES.”

that consumers want to drive, we need a mix of powertrain technologies,” said Ratcliffe.

“BEVs are perfect for certain uses: shorter trips and urban deliveries, but industry and governments need to have realistic expectations around other technologies that can help accelerate the necessary pace of change. That is the reason we are offering an additional powertrain for the Fusilier, one that dramatically reduces emissions but has the range and refuelling capabilities needed.”

BYD LAUNCHES ALLELECTRIC YANGWANG U9 SUPERCAR

BYD, CHINA’S LEADING electric vehicle manufacturer, has made its name in Australia with the big-selling ATTO 3 SUV, the small Dolphin hatchback, and the recently available Seal sedan. While these vehicles have mass market, affordable appeal, BYD plays in all areas of the electric vehicle sandpit and last month launched an absolute beauty for those with a taste for high-performance supercars.

Called the YangWang U9, the supercar hails from YangWang, BYD’s high-end brand, and it will surely gain interest from those with a taste for incredible-looking sports cars boasting performance that can match anything from Europe’s exotic, premium, performance car manufacturers.

First unveiled last year, the U9 has four electric motors, offering four-wheel independent torque control, and packs a real punch, churning out a whopping 970kW and 1680Nm. All that grunt is good, the company says, for the sprint to 100km/h to be done in 2.36 seconds and a top speed over 300km/h. That performance is helped along, no doubt, by active and passive aerodynamic packages aimed at reducing drag and enhancing heat dissipation efficiency.

Also under that sleek exterior is an 800-volt architecture, and an 80kWh Blade

battery set-up with ultra-fast charging tech that can charge at up to 500kW. Range is a claimed 450km (CLTC).

There’s also something called the DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System that is designed to greatly enhance ‘vehicle agility and comfort for both drivers and passengers.’

Inside, the YangWang U9’s cockpit features 14-way adjustable seats, wireless smartphone charging, carbon fibre trim, a 12.3-inch central screen, a 10.25-inch instrument screen and a host of other smart features and, because this is a BYD, it’s stacked with driving assistance functions and safety features too.

Priced at ¥1.68 million ($AU356,400), the YangWang U9 isn’t cheap, but is decently priced compared to its top-shelf supercar rivals. One can hope we will see it one day on Australian roads.

HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 N LANDS DOWN UNDER

HYUNDAI’S HIGH-PERFORMANCE

ALL-ELECTRIC Ioniq 5 N has arrived in Australia.

The company says that Hyundai Australia’s R&D team were involved with the development of the car’s tuning – including revising the Electronically Controlled Suspension software tune to suit local conditions - and that its capabilities ensure its performance can turn it from a ‘quiet EV daily companion, to a nimble backroad sports car, to hardcharging track monster.’

The Ioniq 5 N is fitted with a number of bits of tech designed to enable it to be that performance ‘monster’ and be a thrilling drive, with Hyundai saying it showcases three core principles: Everyday Sportscar, Corner Rascal, and Racetrack Capability.

Leveraging its E-GM platform, the

Ioniq 5 N features N Torque Distribution, electronic Limited-Slip Differential, Electronic Controlled Suspension, and a reinforced body structure. Track performance is enhanced with, amongst other features, N Race (maximised battery cooling and power control for track driving), N Pedal (enabling one-pedal driving for pro-driver style weight

transfer and turn in), N Launch Control (acceleration assist with configurable grip for better torque control), N Grin Boost (delivering maximum power for 10 seconds), and Track State of Charge (display of battery consumption per lap). There’s even something called N Drift Optimiser, designed to optimise torque distribution to enable drifting.

Partnered with all this are an N e-Shift (a virtual shift control) and N Active Sound+ (which delivers, via internal and external speakers, either engine and exhaust sounds or futuristic sounds).

All-in-all, it’s an eye-widening set of features sure to make things fun and interesting, and it is underpinned by a proper performance set-up that looks sure to deliver.

There are two motors, one up front and one at the rear, that combined deliver 448kW and 740Nm. However, flicking on that N Grin Boost and those numbers get pumped up to 478kW and 770Nm. Maximum speed is 260km/h and, with

N Grin Boost on, the Ioniq 5 N can get to 100km/h in 3.4 seconds.

Energy comes via an 84kWh battery and the car’s 800V architecture allows for rapid charging. At a 50kW DC charger, Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 70 minutes. At a 350kW DC charger, that time comes down to around 18 minutes. Regenerative braking allows for some charge on the road. Range, Hyundai claims, is 448km (WLTP).

Structurally, Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 N received an 11 per cent increase in torsional strength through reinforcement of the inner wheelhouse. Also, 42 additional spot welds and more extensive adhesive application reinforces the strength of the car’s connecting joints, improving body strength and reducing flex.

In addition, suspension mounting points, such as the rear mounting points for the front subframe, are also reinforced. Front and rear subframe stay mountings are also added, while reinforced cowl cross bar centre mountings reduce steering vibration and harshness.

On the inside, the Ioniq 5 N gets a semiperforated leather steering wheel featuring buttons for Drive Mode, N Grin Boost Mode and N Custom Modes.

The interior is upholstered in premium black Alcantara suede and natural leather, with Performance Blue stitching for the seats, steering wheel, crash pad, first-row door trims and armrests.

VIDEO: HYUNDAI N | THE ALL-NEW IONIQ 5 N PERFORMANCE FILM

The centre console features thigh support pads, and there are large and grippy metal pedals and footrests, and door scuff plates.

There’s a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a head-up display, and as much connected car, safety and driver assistance features as you could want. There’s Hyundai’s Bluelink service, a bunch of vehicle management features (scheduled charging, charging station search and so on), Bluetooth streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB and 12v Charging ports, and . . . well, the list goes on. Also handy is a Vehicle-to-Load connection.

The list of safety and driver assistance features is pretty lengthy too.

Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance-Assist – Rear, Blind-Spot View Monitor, Driver Attention Warning, Lane change assist control, Lane following off-set control, Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Evasive steering assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, Parking CollisionAvoidance Assist, Rear Cross-traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Occupant Warning, Safe Exit Assist . . . it’s an exhaustive list.

Pricing for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N reflects the performance and features the vehicle offers. At a manufacturer’s list price of $111,000 it is not a budget EV option, but you do seem to get a lot of car (and presumably a lot of fun) for your money.

CHERY TO BRING OMODA E5 EV AND TIGGO 8 PRO MAX TO AUSTRALIAN MARKET

CHERY WILL LAUNCH its Omoda E5 SUV electric vehicle (EV) into the Australian market by the middle of this year.

The company says the EV is powered by a single electric motor producing 150kW

and 340Nm, is able to reach 100km/h in 7.6 seconds, and will be available in two trim levels - Standard and Premium. It will, Chery adds, have power consumption of 15.5kWh/100km, a 61kWh battery, and deliver a range of up to 430km (WLTP).

Cherry TIGGO 9 Pro Max Cherry Omoda E5 EV

THE OMODA E5 WILL JOIN ANOTHER NEW MEMBER OF CHERY’S AUSTRALIAN PORTFOLIO, WITH THE COMPANY ALSO ANNOUNCING THE IMMINENT ARRIVAL OF THE TIGGO 8 PRO MAX, A PREMIUM FLAGSHIP SEVEN-SEAT SUV.

Equipment will include a 12.3-inch curved screen, panoramic sunroof, a digital instrument cluster, and plenty of exterior and interior colour options.

The Omoda E5 will join another new member of Chery’s Australian portfolio,

with the company also announcing the imminent arrival of the TIGGO 8 Pro Max, a premium flagship seven-seat SUV.

That model will arrive in three gradesTIGGO 8 Pro Max Urban (FWD), TIGGO 8 Pro Max Elite (FWD), and TIGGO 8 Pro Max Ultimate (AWD) – with all grades to be powered by a 2-litre turbo petrol engine delivering 180kW and 375Nm.

Plenty of details and specification information is to come, but if the Omoda 5 SUV, released into Australia last year, is any indication, then both the Omoda E5 and the TIGGO 9 Pro Max will likely be well priced and a serious option for those looking for a new vehicle in the EV and large SUV categories.

A BUMPER MONTH FOR NEW VEHICLE SALES IN FEBRUARY

VFACTS DATA PUBLISHED by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has shown another cracking month for new vehicle sales in February.

The nation’s automotive industry delivered 105,023 vehicles during the month, a 20.9 per cent increase on the same period last year.

Sales across every State and Territory increased compared with February 2023 with numbers in Queensland up a whopping 21.9 per cent (22,466), while the ACT was up by 19.9 per cent (1,743); NSW 15.7 per cent (31,943); South Australia 16.3 per cent (6,451); Tasmania 28.5 per cent (1,817); Victoria 29.8 per cent (28,415); Western Australia 15.3 per cent (11,317) and Northern Territory 20.1 per cent (871).

Toyota was the market leader with 19,374 sales, followed by Mazda (7,350), Ford (7,275), Nissan (6,617) and Mitsubishi (6,411).

The Ford Ranger was Australia’s top selling vehicle with sales of 5,353, followed by the Toyota HiLux (4403), Tesla Model 3 (3,593), Isuzu Ute D-Max (2,941) and Toyota RAV4 (2,843).

Battery electric vehicles accounted for 9.6 per cent of sales in February and recorded 10,111 sales, up from 5,932 in February last year. One-in-five vehicles sold (21.5 per cent) were powered by low emissions technologies – battery-electric (10,111), hybrid (11,447), plug-in hybrid (1,034), hydrogen (1) – showing a strong appetite for electrified vehicles.

“GROWING SALES OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES ACROSS OTHER MARKET SEGMENTS PROVES THAT WHERE A BATTERY ELECTRIC PRODUCT EXISTS WHICH SUITS THE DRIVING HABITS OF AUSTRALIAN MOTORISTS, WORK AND RECREATION NEEDS THEY WILL PURCHASE THESE VEHICLES.”

With utes still dominant at the top of the sales chart, FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber made note of the industry’s concerns around the Federal Government’s proposed New Vehicle Emissions Standard when commenting on the sales figures.

“Australian motorists’ strong preference for Utes, accounting for 20.3 per cent of sales this month, demonstrates the challenges with the proposed New Vehicle Emissions Standard. Out of 21,327 utes sold in February, only one was an EV.”

He also noted the appetite for electrified vehicles when the models were available that fitted a consumer’s needs.

“Growing sales of electric vehicles across other market segments proves that where a battery electric product exists which suits the driving habits of Australian motorists, work and recreation needs they will purchase these vehicles.”

TSTAYING UP TO DATE WITH “CLOSING THE LOOPHOLES NO.2 BILL”

HE SECOND TRANCHE of “Closing the Loopholes” changes to the Fair Work Act passed in February. All businesses are encouraged to become aware and ensure compliance with these changes to workplace laws. It is also clear there are more changes intended to workplace laws.

Some of the key changes are outlined below with few small business exemptions.

NEW RULES ABOUT ENTERPRISE BARGAINING AND INTRACTABLE DISPUTES APPLY NOW

Statutory Definition of Employee

In an effort to address concerns about sham contracting and gig workers, a new definition of employer and employee will apply from 26 August 2024 placing primacy on the substance of the employment relationship rather than the written contract.

New Definition of Casual Employee and Right to Convert

A new definition and rules about casual employment and conversion will apply from 26 August 2024. Casual employment will have a significantly new definition with reference to an absence of firm advanced commitment to continuing and indefinite work over a period of time.

ALL BUSINESSES ARE ENCOURAGED TO BECOME AWARE AND ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH THESE CHANGES TO WORKPLACE LAWS. IT IS ALSO CLEAR THERE ARE MORE CHANGES INTENDED TO WORKPLACE LAWS.

Right to Disconnect from After Hours Contact

From 26 August 2024 (small business exempt until 26/8/2025) employees will have the right to not respond to contact from their employer and other third parties outside their working hours unless such refusals would be ‘unreasonable’. This does not prevent messages being sent after hours.

Underpayments / Right of Entry

Penalties for an underpayment of wages will increase from 2025 to up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $7.8 million dollars. Small business guidelines will apply. From 1 July 2024 exemption certificates may be applied for, and from 26 August 2024 new rules will apply for independent contractor ‘unfair contracts’ disputes.

The information in this article is very general and does not constitute legal advice. As these and other changes continue to roll out, MTAQ will continue to provide regular updates. For further information and advice about workplace relations matters please contact MTAQ

IRECENTLY HAD

THE privilege of participating in several MTA Queensland school engagement activities in a couple of regional areas across the state. We all acknowledge school students are a critical part of the pipeline of our future workforce so, as an industry, we must be active to ensure we reach as many students/parents and career advisors as we possibly can as there is fierce competition for these potential workers.

. . . SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT DONE RIGHT WILL REAP REWARDS FOR OUR INDUSTRY.

I must say, school engagement done right will reap rewards for our industry. While we had some learnings from these engagements - and my key takeaways are parents must be involved in the discussions as they’re key influencers - we must have the tools in our arsenal to inspire and educate students/parents when we speak with them. Importantly, the credibility of our efforts is amplified when real employers participate in the process.

We had this formula pretty well in place for our recent engagements and consider the events a success. There were many robust discussions around the varied automotive career options along with questions around what’s the process to secure a job in the auto industry and when a student should leave school, year 10 or

12. These and other queries came thick and fast from both students and parents alike, and we were more than happy to provide answers to them along with connecting students with employers.

On the topic of pre-employment programs, we have a cohort of prevocational students completing their Certificate II in Vocational Preparation at the end of March so, if you’re an employer in the Southeast Queensland region and are after a job-ready first-year apprentice, please reach out to us so we can arrange a meet and greet. Also, with school holidays just around the corner, we’re pleased to have almost filled our two Auto Ready courses (automotive immersion program) in Brisbane for April.

Apprentice of the Month: February 2024

APPRENTICE:

KYE ROBINSON

WORKPLACE:

BMAS BILOELA

APPRENTICESHIP: LIGHT VEHICLE MECHANICAL

KYE ROBINSON IS the MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month for February 2024.

The 20-year-old is in the third year of his light vehicle apprenticeship and works at BMAS Biloela, a business that delivers a wide range of services – including mobile repair and maintenance, parts and machinery supplies - to the many agricultural businesses in the central Queensland farming region, as well as regular light vehicle servicing and maintenance.

There’s little that BMAS Biloela doesn’t do, and that is reflected in the skilled staff that work there – two previous apprentice of the month winners have come from the BMAS workshop.

Kye joins that duo in making his mark, demonstrating, his employers said, ‘a level of commitment, technical expertise and passion that sets him apart . . .’

It is perhaps not surprising Kye is excelling in his apprenticeship. His grandfather built engines for speedboat racing and Kye, like his father before him, was always interested in that work and serviced and maintained his own cars. And while he entertained the idea of becoming a boilermaker or a fitter and turner, a mechanical apprenticeship was always Kye’s most likely career destination.

After moving to Biloela three years ago, Kye had concrete plans to pursue an apprenticeship after finishing Grade 12 at school. Things moved pretty quickly.

“About midway through Grade 12 I did a week of work experience at BMAS and then about two weeks prior to the following school holidays, BMAS asked if I wanted to come back for another week,” said Kye. “My ears sort of perked up at that and after I did that week, they offered me the light vehicle apprenticeship. I finished Grade 12 and about three days after finishing school I

went straight to work.”

Working at BMAS Biloela sees Kye getting to work on a wide range of vehicles and machinery and given plenty of responsibility both at the workshop and out on the road delivering mobile servicing and maintenance. Those on-site visits can be rather epic - a 500km round trip to Rolleston is the farthest trip on Kye’s books!

“We are a tractor dealership - Massey Ferguson, Duetz-Fahr, AGCO and others – as well as a general maintenance centre, so we do everything from tractor transmissions to clutches – anything agricultural – as well as light vehicle work, a bit of plant, and trucks,” he said. “And I do quite a bit of my own thing. I have my own work ute and do a lot of field maintenance and repairs for the agricultural side of things.”

Since starting his apprenticeship, Kye has been training with the MTA Institute, but other training opportunities have been plentiful as BMAS works to upskill its staff to offer its customers the best quality service.

“There are lots of learning opportunities at BMAS,” said Kye. “For example, next week I am going down to the Gold Coast for a week of Deutz-Fahr training, then I am back home for a week before going to do some Trimble training – learning the precision ag side, autosteer, GPS and so on for tractors. I can’t speak highly enough of my employers as they are paying for me to do that training. It’s fantastic.”

With electrification now a part of the agricultural sector, training to be able to work on battery electric and hybrid vehicles will become part of Kye’s training too.

“That is something we all have to embrace,” he said. “There is no denying that electrification is the future.”

As for Kye’s future once he completes his apprenticeship, his enthusiasm to keep learning, and do so with BMAS, seems clear.

“I don’t intend to leave BMAS any time soon,” he said. “I’m still young, want to pile in as much knowledge as I can and be as good at my job as I can be. And then whatever happens, happens.”

have been connecting with schools recently, seeking opportunities to establish strategic partnerships. The interest from most in connecting their students to employment opportunities in the automotive industry has been incredibly high.

things for different employers. For some it could be as simple as offering work experience opportunities. It could include donating equipment or offering young people a school-based apprenticeship, or an apprenticeship once they leave school. It could also mean engaging in meet and greet days, where students with a passion for automotive can speak directly to employers about work opportunities in their community.

The automotive industry is suffering chronic skills and labour shortages – this is the message that we hear from members across the state. It’s the message that all the recent skills publications are saying, and the message that major peak bodies such as the MTA Queensland are telling the Government in Queensland, and at the Commonwealth level as well.

There is no question that Governments at all levels have a responsibility to support industry address skills and labour shortages, however, industry also needs to put some significant skin in the game too.

In recent meetings that MTA Queensland has had with schools in metropolitan and regional areas the message has been consistent. Schools value partnerships with local employers and are keen to engage.

Engagement means different

Many MTA Queensland members have established strong working relationships with schools in their region and they are reaping the benefits. Having a relationship with a school provides access to a reliable and steady pipeline of future workers.

If you can work on the partnership, you may also find that the school can tailor their learning programs that occurs at the school to suit the automotive industry, providing you with workers who come to you with the base-level skills, so they can start working straight away.

MTA Queensland has dedicated resources ready to help you make a connection. If you are interested, all you need to do is reach and get in touch. Give it a go, you have nothing to lose!

DRIVING INNOVATION: EMBRACING NEURODIVERSITY IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY.

IN THE DYNAMIC world of the automotive industry, innovation is the engine that propels businesses forward.

As companies strive to meet evolving consumer demands and stay ahead of the competition, they must tap into every available resource to drive efficiency and creativity. One such resource often overlooked is the pool of neurodivergent talent.

Neurodiversity, encompassing conditions like autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Dyspraxia, and Dyscalculia, offers unique strengths that can revolutionize the automotive aftermarket sector. While some may view these conditions as challenges, they are, in fact, wellsprings of untapped potential waiting to be harnessed.

Consider this: In Australia, one in five individuals lives with a disability. Within this demographic lies a wealth of talent, yet misconceptions and biases often hinder their integration into the workforce. With around half a million working-age individuals actively seeking employment, the automotive aftermarket industry stands to gain significantly by embracing neurodiversity in its hiring practices.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), approximately 30 to 40% of the population is neurodivergent, yet a startling 34% of Australia's neurodivergent community remains unemployed. This statistic underscores the urgency for businesses within the automotive aftermarket sector to reassess their recruitment strategies and tap into this diverse talent pool.

But why should automotive businesses prioritize neurodiverse hiring initiatives? The reasons are clear and compelling. Research shows that individuals with disabilities are less likely to take sick days, have fewer workplace accidents, and are four times more likely to stay with their current employer compared to their non-disabled counterparts.

Neurodivergent individuals bring a unique perspective to the table, with unparalleled problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and innovative thinking. In an industry where precision, creativity, and adaptability are paramount, these qualities can be game-changers.

Embracing neurodiversity isn't just about fostering inclusion; it's a strategic business decision that can drive growth and

innovation in the automotive industry. By tapping into the diverse talents of neurodivergent individuals, businesses can gain a competitive edge, enhance efficiency, and cultivate a workplace culture that values diversity and empowers every team member to reach their full potential.

The automotive sector has much to gain from embracing neurodiversity. By recognizing the unique strengths and perspectives that neurodivergent individuals bring to the table, businesses can position themselves for success in an everevolving market landscape while championing diversity, inclusion, and innovation.

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS WITH MTA QUEENSLAND

THIS YEAR MARKS a special moment for MTA Queensland as one of its employees, Russell Sticklen, ticks off his 30th year with the Association.

Many members will have spoken to Russell over the years, as for a couple of decades he was both the Association’s Technical Advisor– always ready to take a call should members need any help – as well as its Stationery Manager.

For the past few years, however, Russell has been an essential part of the MTA Institute’s training team, helping to guide young people through their first steps into the automotive trades through programs such as Auto Ready and the five-week AUR20720 Certificate II Automotive Vocational Preparation program.

Supporting and training these young people is a job Russell enjoys immensely.

“I train them to a certain point and then they move on and get a job or an apprenticeship,” he said. “I see them from time to time and it is very satisfying to see their progress.”

It has been quite a journey for Russell to chalk up 30 years with MTA Queensland. He has had a passion for cars from as early as he can remember – influenced in part by his father and uncle who owned a radiator business - and that passion has seen him not only forge a career in the industry but spend much of his spare time in it too. A love of racing has seen him pilot many cars down the drag track and more recently - and in cahoots with MTA Institute Training Delivery Manager Scott Gehrke - take on circuit and hill climbing.

Initially, Russell began his career as a mechanical apprentice, but an accident left him unable to work for a time. He did stay in the industry by working at automotive parts stores, but it was contact

with MTA Queensland in the early 1990s that changed the course of his career.

“I did a Console Operator’s course, and the training manager at the time said they were looking for someone with a mechanical background who could assist members with technical information,” said Russell. “That’s how I started with MTA Queensland and became a technical advisor.”

Russell has seen plenty of changes at the Association during his three-decade stint. The two that stand out, he said, were the growth in training delivered by the MTA Institute and the staff with whom he works.

“There’s actually no one here now who was here when I started,” he said with a chuckle. “It is amazing to think that I have been working here longer than some of the staff have been alive!

“And when I was first introduced to MTA Queensland in 1993, there were just two people in the training department,” he added. “Today, there are more than 40 trainers and administration staff running programs for thousands of people across the state. And now I am helping young people get their start in the industry. I’m proud to be a part of that.”

MTAI STUDENT PICKS UP ULYSSES CLUB APPRENTICE AWARD

IN 2004, THE Ulysses Motorcycle Club introduced its Motorcycle Apprentice of the Year Award and each year zone winners from across the country are chosen, from which a national winner is selected.

In January, the Ulysses club announced the zone winners for the 2023 award and Lane Smith, a 25-year-old, fourthyear apprentice from Tower Motorcycles in Charters Towers, was picked as the Queensland/NT winner.

It was, said Lane, who trains with the MTA Institute, a shock to win but he was extremely happy to have done so.

“I was stressing out a little, but it will look good on the resume!” he said.

Lane was nominated for the award by Darren Wade, owner of Towers Motorcycles, and his MTA Institute trainer Jason McCann, and according to the Ulysses Club, all those nominated were judged on ‘a set of criteria to demonstrate their commitment, dedication and a genuine enthusiasm for their chosen profession . . .’

Added to that was a testing interview call with a Ulysses judge who probed Lane’s motorcycle knowledge with some tough questions.

“There were some tricky ones in there,” he said. “There was one about ABS, for example, and nothing we work on here really has ABS! But it was good because he explained a lot of things at the end, so I learned a bit too.”

For Jason, Lane’s trainer, the zone award is well-earned recognition of his skills.

“He has been an excellent student,” said Jason. “He shows passion in his work and studies, is eager to learn more, and observing him in the workshop it is clear that his work ethic is top notch.”

Perhaps it should be no surprise that Lane excels as a motorcycle apprentice. He has been fascinated with bikes since childhood and though he originally started his working life as a parts interpreter, he always harboured the desire to become a mechanic.

“I’ve been into motorcycles since I was a little kid,” he said. “My dad played a big part in that. He likes bikes as well and he told me a story once that when I was a little baby, he had a bike he was fixing up in the shed and he looked over at me and I was smacking the engine with a hammer. I started early!

“I was in parts at first, then went to the mines for a bit, then came back and asked Darren for this apprenticeship. He gave me a start and it has gone on from there.”

With the Ulysses zone award win under his belt and his training nearing completion, Lane will soon be a dual-qualified, award-winning mechanic – all of which should set him up nicely for a long and successful career.

ATTRACTING STAFF TO THE WORKPLACE

ATTRACTING STAFF IN

the current labor market can be challenging, especially with low unemployment and a growing demand for skilled workers. However, by adopting a few easy to implement innovative strategies, and thinking outside the box, businesses can overcome these hurdles.

While offering a competitive salary is essential, it shouldn't be the only factor in attracting employees. Employers could consider also offering additional benefits and incentives. Moreover, tapping into underutilised talent pools can broaden the scope of potential candidates. This could include reaching out to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, who may offer valuable skills and perspectives to the business.

Creating a supportive workplace culture, free from bullying and harassment is highly effective for attracting and retaining talent, especially younger workers. This involves fostering an environment where employees feel valued, and supporting them to grow personally and professionally. Providing flexible working conditions, such as a 9-day working fortnight, clear pathways for career advancement, and opportunities for training and development can enhance employee satisfaction and engagement.

Understanding the preferences and motivations of younger generations, such as millennials and Gen Z, is also key. These demographics often prioritise factors like work-life balance, diversity and

IT'S IMPORTANT TO RECOGNISE THAT MILLENNIALS AND GEN Z CANDIDATES ENGAGE DIFFERENTLY COMPARED TO PREVIOUS GENERATIONS.

inclusion, and social responsibility when considering job opportunities. Building a strong employer brand that aligns with these values, promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace, and leveraging social media platforms to connect with potential candidate pools can help businesses effectively engage younger talent.

It's important to recognise that millennials and Gen Z candidates engage differently compared to previous generations. They often seek purposedriven work and value opportunities for growth and development. By adapting recruitment strategies to cater to these preferences, businesses can better attract and retain younger employees.

In conclusion, attracting workers in today's competitive labor market requires a multifaceted approach. By offering more than just competitive salaries, fostering a supportive workplace culture, understanding the needs of younger generations, and embracing innovative recruitment methods, businesses can stand out and attract talent to fuel their growth and success.

If you want to know more about workforce attraction strategies, contact Kelvin Millar, the Industry Workforce Advisor at MTA Queensland.

THIS IS CHRYSLER’S latest electric vehicle concept effort – the Halycon. The American manufacturer, part of the multi-national Stellantis group, has plans to be a fully electric vehicle manufacturer by the end of the decade and if the Halcyon is an indication of its direction, then things are looking pretty good.

A SLEEK AND FUTURISTIC VEHICLE, THE HALCYON IS DESIGNED ON THE STLA LARGE PLATFORM – STELLANTIS’

BATTERY-ELECTRIC VEHICLE (BEV) PLATFORM THAT IS EARMARKED TO BE THE FOUNDATION FOR A RANGE OF UPCOMING VEHICLES.

A sleek and futuristic vehicle, the Halcyon is designed on the STLA Large platform – Stellantis’ battery-electric vehicle (BEV) platform that is earmarked to be the foundation for a range of upcoming vehicles.

Stellantis says the STLA Large platform is designed and engineered ‘. . . with the option of 400-volt and 800-volt electric architectures. Three-in-one electric drive modules (EDMs) that incorporate the motor, power inverter and gear reduction can be configured in front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive, and all-wheel-drive layouts. The power inverter employs silicon carbide semiconductor technology to minimise power losses. Propulsion system performance can be upgraded during the vehicle’s lifespan via over-theair software updates.’

The company adds that the platform initially includes battery pack options with energy ratings between 85 and 118 kilowatt hours (kWh), targets an overall range of 800km miles for sedans and can accept future energy storage technologies when they reach production readiness. Furthermore, Stellantis says the initial

generation of propulsion components holds the potential to deliver acceleration of 0-100 km/h in the 2-second range and fast charging will add up to 4.5 kWh per minute to the 800-volt battery pack.

What set-up exactly is in the Halycon concept is not clear, although Chrysler says it ‘ . . . envisions incorporating

breakthrough Lyten 800V lithium-sulfur EV batteries that do not use nickel, cobalt or manganese, resulting in an estimated 60 per cent lower carbon footprint than today’s best-in-class batteries and a pathway to achieve the lowest emissions EV battery on the global market.’

Whatever the battery and electric architecture technology, the Halcyon’s design clearly indicates it is going to offer top-notch performance. And beyond that, there is more cutting-edge tech incorporated into its construction and in the cabin.

A wickedly cool mixture of front, rear and roof-hinged doors ensure there’s plenty of room to get in and out of the low-lying Halcyon, with facial biometrics enabling hands-free entry and startup, and doors unlocking and opening autonomously. There’s even air suspension that will lift the low-profile vehicle as the driver enters the cockpit.

On the inside, Stellantis’ STLA Brain, STLA SmartCockpit, and STLA AutoDrive technologies are installed, so there’s plenty of safety, driver assistance, and infotainment features on hand once you are in.

The company says that STLA AutoDrive allows for up to Level 4 autonomous

driving features; there’s an augmentedreality head-up system; voice recognition; and selectable levels of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) support.

Chrysler says it will continue on an electrified transformation that will see it launch the brand’s first battery-electric vehicle in 2025 and have an all-electric portfolio in 2028.
