I

AM OFTEN ASKED about the value of a membership with MTA Queensland, the peak body representing the Queensland automotive value ROD CAMM chain. And while it CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER MTA QUEENSLAND is easy to point to the many services we provide – Workplace Relations advice, consumer complaint support, and numerous discounts to name a few – it is far more challenging detailing the important role we play in advocating to government on behalf of our members. Case in point, late last year the Queensland Government announced a further review into trading hour arrangements, stating it was time to deregulate them and leave hours open to the discretion of industry. An incredibly pertinent issue to our new and used car and motorcycle dealer members (over 96 per cent were opposed to Sunday trading), the Association undertook extensive consultation with members to prepare a submission for the inquiry on behalf of industry. We also provided evidence to the Parliamentary inquiry together with AADA, who I must thank for their substantial contributions to securing a united industry approach. I am happy to say that following our efforts, the Committee has decided to retain the existing trading arrangements for our industry going forward. At our core, MTA Queensland exists to represent the interests of our members across our 11 industry divisions to influence Government on topics relevant to the industry’s ongoing prosperity. With a united, strong member base, we have the recognition to significantly influence outcomes now and into the future. Without you, our members, this is not possible. 4 | Motor Trader February 2022

COOL RUNNINGS THE BUSINESS OF SELLING THE RARE AND EXTRAORDINARY

I

T’S A FAIRLY well-accepted theory that in the COVID era - during which uncertainty about the future has paired with the abrupt halt of being able to spend big on, for example, expensive holidays abroad many more people than usual have looked to spend their money on things like home renovations or the nostalgic thrills to be found in owning and enjoying a classic car. The result has been something of a boom in the classic car market. Australian-made vehicles have enjoyed a particularly buoyant time with tremendous auction prices

achieved for some of the country’s bestknown automotive gems. But while the headline grabbers have been the rare and/ or performance-spec Toranas, Monaros, and Falcons of the 1960s and 1970s, the market is pretty good too for their elegant European contemporaries, and if you have deep pockets and a taste that favours the

cool stylings of that era’s models from Lamborghini, Mercedes, Jaguar, Maserati et al, then there are places and people to whom you can turn to satisfy that need. One such business is Oldtimer Australia, a classic car brokerage business that has been catering to the high-end classic car market since 1996. The Oldtimer Australia showroom is packed with gorgeous classic cars


MTA | Q&A Tucked away on the outskirts of Brisbane, down a quiet street not far from the city’s airport, lies the company’s showroom. Owned and run by classic car aficionado Mark Jansen since 2011, it is an Aladdin’s cave of stunning automotive art, and the brands and models that lie therein are enough to make even the most jaded collector drool. On the day of Motor Trader’s visit, parked up in the showroom was a 1974 Maserati Merak, a 1970 E-Type Jag, a glorious 1972 Citroen SM, a 1966 Mercedes 250SE, a 1977 IROC Challenge Series Porsche 911, a 1969 Maserati Ghibli, a 1975 Morgan Plus 8, a 1973 Lotus Elan +2S, a 1976 Mark 2 Jag . . . the list goes on. It’s a remarkable place to be if you’re a car enthusiast, and in amongst the cars for sale are a couple of Mark’s personal vehicles which stand as a testament to his own impeccable taste. The pick of these, perhaps, is the 1971 Monteverdi 375L High Speed – a rarity even amongst these rare beasts and an absolute beauty that has been restored to tip-top condition. These cars represent the market niche in which Mark and the Oldtimer Australia

business moves: closeto-mint condition, high-end sporting automobiles for wellheeled clients with an appetite for the exotic, the unusual, and the rare. “Oldtimer Australia is a very boutique classic car business,” says Mark. “Our niche would be English and European sporting cars of the ’50s through ’90s, though we do, from time to time, move outside of that space – maybe for a particular client who has a different type of car that is a bit more modern, or possibly something American or Japanese. “We try to focus on cars that are in excellent-to-concourse condition too,” he adds. “We will sell a car that is a restoration project, or a barn find if it is the right sort of car, but we do tend to be quite selective.” Being a brokerage, or consignment,


business, means being a middleman – a knowledgeable partner who helps clients looking to buy or sell cars– and, in Oldtimer Australia’s case, being trusted to look after these prized machines while also being able to help clients search for and locate the rare or unusual vehicle they’ve always wished to own. “A lot of the work we do is matching buyers and sellers, and I have people phoning every day looking for cars,” says

Mark. “There are a number of collectors around who ask me to keep an eye out for certain cars and, as a result, a lot of cars we sell are sold before they are advertised or on the market.” To be successful, especially in a sector involving very expensive vehicles, means having a solid-gold reputation and, just as importantly, having the network of contacts to be able to do the deals clients’ want. MTA | Q&A himself has been a bonus in that respect, and that network has been especially useful over the past couple of years. “It is probably the most critical part of the business,” he says. “The classic car community in which we move is, in some ways, quite small. Everyone knows everyone, and so it is important to build a really good reputation. “The last couple of years have been challenging because we haven’t been able to travel, but I have been able to leverage our network - the relationships that I have built over the time I have had the business and through being a car enthusiast all my life - as well as the reputation of the previous owner, Terry Healy. I know a lot of people in the car world, and that has certainly been a benefit during the COVID period.” While the network of serious potential buyers is vital, it doesn’t hurt that interest in classic cars is always strong across all sections of the community

– a fact reflected in Oldtimer Australia’s potent social media presence. The business has nearly 30,000 followers on Facebook, 2500 on Instagram, has a 3000-strong subscriber base for its monthly newsletter, and also has a YouTube channel that, while relatively small currently, will be the focus of some solid marketing attention in coming months. “The network is probably what is most important, but through modern technology we are able to communicate things in a really broad way,” says Mark. “We have to embrace that and use it, and it is definitely powerful and the way of the future. “And we will expand on our video presence on YouTube, which we currently use to demonstrate cars to a potential buyer. Through those videos you can see that a car runs and drives well, you can hear it going up and down the gears and that the engine pulls strongly and that it’s not blowing any smoke. It is always good to see the car in motion. We try to make the videos as nice as we can and though they are time consuming, we will be ramp that up a bit.” Whether clients come in through Mark’s well-established network or via new social media communications, they

the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) – a tax that currently stands at 33 per cent for vehicles over the threshold of $79,659 for ‘fuel-efficient vehicles’ and $69,152 for others. Introduced in 2001, apparently as a mechanism to prop up local automotive manufacturing by ensuring the prices of luxury imports would not become competitive with those vehicles built in Australia, the LCT continues today even though Ford, Holden, and Toyota have long since folded up their local manufacturing tents. While the procedure for exporting from Australia is mostly headache-free, importing is far more taxing (no pun intended) and is, says Mark, one of the barriers to making the classic car sector even more vibrant. “To export, the process is very simple,” he says. “If the phone rings from London, you talk to them about the car, you email them photos, videos, all the information. If they buy the car and want it shipped to London, we can assist with logistics – it is all relatively straightforward and easy. “On the flip side, if you’re sitting in Australia and want to buy a car that’s in London, it is very difficult. You have to deal with issues like asbestos testing before you bring it here, and all of the taxes you pay 12 | Motor Trader February 2022

don’t make it viable. The upshot is that the more expensive the car, the less likely it is to be imported into this country. “You pay LCT and GST to bring a classic car here. So, if you bought a car in England for $500,000, by the time it was sitting in your garage in Brisbane, it’ll probably owe you $750,000. If you got buyer’s remorse and wanted to sell that car, what’s it worth on the market? Probably $500,000. “More often, we see people who can afford big money for classic cars keeping them overseas because it does not make commercial sense to import them here. As a result, businesses involved with classic cars – whether it be people that buy and sell them such as us, or people who restore or maintain them – are all missing out.”

CHANGING GEARS

Making a career out of buying, selling, brokering deals for, and enjoying classic sports cars would surely be the dream of many a car enthusiast. Actually being able to make that dream a reality takes a bit of doing. Like others who find themselves doing a job they love, the road to owning Oldtimer Australia was a long one for Mark. Born and bred in Perth, he completed

successful organisation, do pretty well, and be able to buy myself a few interesting cars. It has just been with me all my life.” So much so, that this passion has taken Mark, and some of his own cars, all over the world - to exclusive gatherings of Lamborghini owners in Italy, to week-long excursions with other Maserati owners in Australia, to trophy-winning trips to the US with his Monteverdi 375L. Not only that, his expertise and knowledge has seen him become a member of the advisory board of Motorclassica, Australia’s premiere classic car show and Concours d’Elegance (‘competition of elegance’) which is held in Melbourne in October every year. It’s little wonder that when the opportunity to get involved with the classic car community on a professional level presented itself, the car enthusiast/ businessman in Mark was happy to take that punt on Oldtimer Australia.

an engineering degree at the University of Western Australia before embarking on a career in engineering services, working for an organisation supporting the resources, energy, and infrastructure sectors. A decades-long career would see Mark climb the corporate ladder and eventually move to Brisbane in 2003, moving into the big chair as CEO at another major, multi-million-dollar-turnover company. But 20-plus years of corporate life left him looking for a seachange and, in 2011, the opportunity arose to buy Oldtimer Australia from its founder Terry Healy and for Mark to combine his nose for business with his passion for cars. It was a career decision that was a lifetime in the making. MTA | Q&A “I was thinking about a seachange at the time,” he says. “I had seen a couple of cars that I was looking to buy, with one being about 90 per cent restored and the other maybe 50 per cent restored, and I thought I would buy them, project manage their restoration, sell them, and maybe make a few dollars. It would be a bit of fun. “I spoke to Terry and asked if he could help me sell those cars,” he adds. “I knew him, albeit not well, and we got to talking. I shared my story about not being sure what I was going to do, about mucking about with these cars and contemplating what life holds beyond that, and he rang me up a week later and said, ‘I have got something to put to you’. We caught up and he said, ‘I am going to America. If you’re looking for a seachange and you like cars, why don’t you buy my business?’ “I was looking for something,” says Mark. “I wasn’t sure what that something was, but that was one of those times when you go ‘What have CLICK TO I got to lose?’. However, for Mark at least, it is ultimately about more than the Lamborghinis, the Ferraris, the Jags and the Rollers. Sure, they are fabulous to look at and, no doubt, glorious to drive, but there’s more to it even than that. “It is about the cars, of course, but it is just as much about the people,” he says. “We have made lifelong friends through the car world, and it is the cars that bring those people together. “When I bought this business, I thought it might be something I do for two or three years and then go back to the corporate world. ACH YEAR IN January, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) takes place in Las Vegas, giving companies from across the world the opportunity to show off their latest and greatest technological advancements and achievements. While carmakers have been a fixture of CES for some time, it has become a more important outlet for them in recent years as incredible sophistication, computing power, and the shift to electrification sweeps through the automotive industry. The 2022 edition of CES was, once

Here are some of the automotiverelated technology developments and announcements that caught our eye this year.

Two years on, and Sony used the CES platform to make an even bigger splash, unveiling not only the Vision S 02 – an electric SUV based on that original concept – but a move into the mobility sector proper with the announcement that it will establish a new company called ‘Sony Mobility Inc.’, through which

it intends to explore entry into the EV market. This is news not to be ignored. Sony, obviously, has some serious credentials in the electronics space, and the Vision-S 01 has already made it onto the road for evaluation and testing. Like that concept, the Vision-S 02 will have a dual-motor set-up with a 200kW motor on each axle and be stocked full of sensors and systems providing top-notch safety, driveability, and infotainment features, including Level 2+ advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), shared or individual video playback on the front panoramic

screen and individual rear-seat displays. There’s even extended gaming features available with PlayStation games able to be played through a remote connection to a console at home. The concepts look good and it would appear that they, or some version of them, may well become available. Sony’s expertise – especially in electronics, optics, and the like – surely translates well into the tech required to power electric vehicles and the Vision-S 01 and 02 concepts look like they could give the company a solid entry into the ever-growing EV sector.

BMW LAUNCHES IX M60 AT CES AND REVEALS IT IS HEADED DOWN UNDER BY MID-2022 DEBUTING AT CES was BMW’s iX M60, the third variant in the BMW iX line-up and the latest fully electric offering from the BMW M high performance brand. As would be expected of an M-brand vehicle, the iX M60 has plenty of grunt on tap. BMW says there is up to 455kW and 1015Nm of torque available from its dual electric motor set-up, with up to 1100Nm available when Launch Control is activated. 0 to 100km/h can be done in 3.8 seconds and top speed is 250km/h. Performance is not just restricted to those regular power and speed figures. Range – an important measurement for any electric vehicle – is impressive too, with BMW claiming a 566km range (WLTP cycle). Energy comes from a 112kWh battery and with DC current charging available up to 200kW, a 10 to 80 per cent charge can be done in around 35 minutes, or 150km or range can be added in about 10 minutes. Alternating current (AC) charging of up to 11kW is also available. Suspension technology includes a BMW iX M60

double­wishbone front axle, a five-link rear axle and electric steering with Servotronic function and variable ratio. In addition, there’s M specific set-up adaptive dualaxle air suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers. As with all EVs, weight is a consideration in design and construction and the iX M60 uses an aluminium spaceframe concept and carbon cage with carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the roof, side and rear sections that combine to increased rigidity and optimise weight. An extensive range of driving technology systems is offered, including the latest generation iDrive display and control system. It is based on the new BMW Operating System 8 and has been designed with a focus on the touch function of the BMW Curved Display and voice communication with the enhanced BMW


Intelligent Personal Assistant. BMW Live Cockpit Professional and BMW Natural Interaction allows functions to be operated using speech and gestures. Topnotch navigation comes via the cloud-based BMW Maps system and Augmented Reality Video on the Control Display. Remote Software Upgrades will offer the possibility to install new and improved vehicle functions over-the-air via the BMW Australia ConnectedDrive store. Model-specific design touches include brake callipers in dark blue with M logo, and optional BMW Individual

BMW UNVEILS COLOUR CHANGING BODY TECHNOLOGY FANCY BEING ABLE to change the colour of your car on a whim and do it immediately? Well, BMW unveiled a technology that can enable you to do just that at CES – a rather special body wrap that can, through electrical charge, change its colour. In the case of the BMW iX Flow concept that the company showed, each body panel was able to flow from white to black and through shades of grey. Incredible stuff. The possibilities for customisation of personal transport become endless with this sort of tech, but its not only about that. BMW claims that selective colour changes ‘can help to cut the amount of cooling and heating required from the

Other standard features include Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, Active Seat Ventilation for driver and front passenger and a Thermal Comfort Package. The company also notes that the technology – called electrophoretic technology – uses energy only when changing colour, not once the colour has changed, so it does not constantly drain energy. REE COMMENCES TRIALS OF ELECTRIC P7 MODULAR PLATFORM REE AUTOMOTIVE IS commencing trials of an all-new P7 platform designed for commercial delivery vehicles and walk-in vans. The P7 platform is targeted to a U.S. based delivery van program, will support up to 8,600 lbs. max payload (3900kg) and, the company says, pack up to 35 per cent more packages than comparable commercial vehicles or the equivalent, and be able to carry up to 30 passengers. Ree Automotive designs and builds EV platforms around its REEcorner technology which packs critical vehicle components (steering, braking,

suspension, powertrain and control) into a single module positioned between the chassis and the wheel. REE uses x-by-wire technology to control each of the corners of the vehicles with full drive-by-wire, brake-by-wire and steer-by-wire. Ree says that the P7 modular platform is designed to simplify development times of electric commercial models for those looking to create their own commercial vehicle brand, unique design and market differentiation. Electric vehicles built on REE’s P7 platforms will, the company says, be able to achieve driving ranges of up to 595km, with max speeds of 128km/h and support gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR) of up to 7,484kg (16,500 lbs).


TURKISH BRAND TOGG DEBUTS HIGHTECH EV CONCEPT AN INTERESTING DEBUT at CES this year came via a relatively new Turkish mobility company, Togg, that is about to make a play for a slice of the electric vehicle action. The company revealed a pair of prototype vehicles in 2019 – a C-segment SUV and a C-segment sedan - which are reported to be going into production this year and in 2024 respectively, and has plans for a B-segment SUV and C-segment MPV in the coming years, but it took the opportunity at CES to unveil a new concept model. The very tidy looking four-door fastback model is reflective of the company’s ambitions and its declaration that it is not a traditional car manufacturer but a technology company – its cars will be fully connected and be fitted with technologies that come under the company’s ‘Smart Life’ platform banner. That platform, Togg said, will encompass more than just a connected car. “We are creating mobility solutions through a business model that is usercentric and data-driven,” said M. Gürcan Karakaş, CEO of Togg, in a statement. “We’re developing solutions that will Togg C-segment sedan

enable a more comfortable mobility experience through the ecosystem and that will grow around our smart device. “Our portfolio includes smart energy solutions. We will manufacture our batteries in-house through Siro Silk Road Clean Energy Solutions, a joint venture with Farasis Energy. Additionally, our business plan includes battery research and development. With our current and future battery product lines, we aim to supply batteries for all types of electric vehicles and to establish a presence in non-automotive sectors as a battery and energy storage systems provider.” Founded in 2018, Togg is a relatively new company, but it does have some heavyweight backing, experience, and expertise behind it with five established Turkish businesses part of the investment group. These include commercial and military vehicle manufacturer BMC; leading mobile phone operator Turkcell; and Zorlu Holding, which, amongst other things, manufactures consumer electronics. Togg has serious ambitions for its car business. It is building a manufacturing hub at Gemlik, in the north-west of Turkey, and its goal is to develop five distinct electric vehicle models and reach one million production units by 2030. HYUNDAI MOTOR REVEALS VISION OF METAMOBILITY CONCEPT

IF THERE IS one car company that is really forward-thinking in its attitude to mobility and just where all the amazing technological leaps being taken could lead us, it is Hyundai, and the company once again stamped its name on the ‘most innovative thinking’ list with its vision for the use of robotics. The technology will, the comapny says, be an essential part of its transformation into a smart mobility solution provider, and at CES, and under the main theme of ‘Expanding Human Reach’, Hyundai highlighted how its robotics business will drive that shift. The company, which acquired leading PnD module Personal mobility Service mobil robotics business Boston Dynamics last year, revealed its concept of ‘Metamobility’. By connecting robots to the metaverse, we will be able to move freely between both the real world and virtual reality,” said Euisun Chung, Hyundai Motor Group’s Executive Chair. “Going one step further from the immersive ‘be there’ proxy experience that the metaverse provides, robots will become an extension of our own physical senses, allowing us to reshape and

enrich our daily lives with Metamobility.” Also at CES, Hyundai revealed its Plug & Drive (PnD) and Drive & Lift (DnL) modular platforms – systems that enable inanimate things to be mobile using the company’s robotics technologies. The PnD module is a single-wheel robotics platform that combines intelligent steering, braking, in-wheel electric drive and suspension hardware that can be scaled up or down, for any purpose, size or application. LiDAR and camera sensors will, the company says, allow a PnDenabled object to move autonomously. Also revealed was the MobED (Mobile Eccentric Droid) small mobility platform that uses the DnL module which combines the drive, steering and braking systems in one structure. With a DnL mounted on each wheel, MobED can lift the platform up and down so the body can stay level as it clears terrain or low barriers such as steps or speed bumps. CHRYSLER ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR ALL-ELECTRIC LINE-UP & UNVEILS AIRFLOW CONCEPT CHRYSLER USED THE CES show to take the wraps of its Chrysler Airflow Concept while also announcing it will launch its first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) by 2025 and have a full battery-electric portfolio by 2028. The company – part of the Stellantis group that also includes Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Dodge, Citroen, Maserati and Jeep - said that the Airflow Concept previews its commitment to delivering a fully electric vehicle line-up by 2028 – a lineup that will be produced using ‘clean manufacturing processes and made with recyclable and renewable materials’. The Airflow Concept gives some insight into that future - spotlighting the company’s drive-system technology, connected customer experiences and mobility features. It features the STLA SmartCockpit platform that is designed to create a ‘connected hub that brings a consumer’s digital lifestyle into the vehicle’, and which allows for a customisable space for each occupant. Screens throughout the interior


can be personalised based on individuals and interests and information on the screens can be shared with all passengers. Each seat also features a built-in camera, enabling occupants to participate, if they should wish, in a group video conference call. The system is kept up to date through over-the-air (OTA) updates. The Airflow Concept is equipped with STLA AutoDrive, which Chrysler says delivers Level 3 autonomous driving

AMAZON AND STELLANTIS TO COLLABORATE ON CONNECTED VEHICLE EXPERIENCES CARMAKER STELLANTIS AND tech and logistics giant Amazon will collaborate to deploy Amazon’s technology and software expertise across Stellantis’ organisation. This will include vehicle development, as well as building connected in-vehicle experiences and the training of automotive software engineers. Together, Stellantis says the two companies will create a suite of software-based products and services that ‘seamlessly integrate with customers’ digital lives and add value over time through regular over-the-air (OTA) software updates’.

The concept features all-wheel-drive capability and is powered by two 150kW electric drive motors (EDM), one in the front and one in the rear. It is designed to accommodate larger capacity EDMs, offering the potential for future highperformance applications. The battery is designed to achieve between a 565km and 645km range on a single charge. The collaboration will focus on several areas including the STLA SmartCockpit which Stellantis plans to deploy in millions of its vehicles from 2024. The platform is designed to create personalised, intuitive in-vehicle experiences using artificial intelligenceenhanced applications for entertainment, Alexa-enabled voice assistance, navigation, vehicle maintenance, ecommerce and payment services. Stellantis has also selected AWS (Amazon Web Services) as its preferred cloud provider for vehicle platforms, with the plan to build the next generation of cloud-enabled infrastructure for vehicle platforms, including STLA SmartCockpit. Also on the agenda, Stellantis is to launch a Software Academy for the upskilling and reskilling employees with the company saying it will train more than 5,000 developers and engineers by 2024 in AWS-related cloud technologies. NEXTBASE DEBUTS POWERFUL, HIGHTECH DASH CAM SYSTEM UK DASH CAM manufacturer Nextbase, unveiled its newest model, the Nextbase iQ at CES, and it is fair to say that Dash Cam technology has come a long way, with this new piece of technology offering some outstanding features aimed at making any vehicle smarter, safer, and more secure. The system has two units, one for the front of the cabin that houses two cameras – one front-facing that records up to 4k resolution, and one facing the cabin monitoring at up to 1440p – and another unit at the rear with a camera recording out the back of the vehicle at up to 1440p. While decent resolution is great, it’s all the other features of this high-tech system that make it stand out. Built-in Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity allows for driver assist features including Witness Mode – voice28 | Motor Trader February 2022

activated recording which is uploaded to the cloud and which can be shared, in realtime, with others through the Nextbase app. There’s also something called Spatial Awareness Technology, which uses artificial intelligence to anticipate and record incidents when the driver is in, or away from, the vehicle. That’s pretty genius. Valet Mode allows the setting of a number of triggers to alert the owner to certain conditions when they are away from the vehicle, such as when being parked, at the workshop, or loaned to another driver; while Roadwatch


UDELV UNVEILS AUTONOMOUS TRANSPORTER DELIVERY VEHICLE CALIFORNIA-BASED AUTONOMOUS delivery vehicle developer Udelv used the CES show to reveal its Transporter vehicle - a cab-less autonomous electric delivery vehicle for multi-stop delivery. The Transporter features a secure, self-contained, hot swappable modular cargo pod called the uPod. It can carry more than 900kg of goods, make up to 80 stops per cycle, cover up to 480km per run depending on the battery pack option and be operated by Udelv’s mobile apps. DC fast charging allows for up to 355km of range to be added in 45 minutes. The Transporter’s top speed is a snip over 110km/h. Udelv says the Transporter is made to deliver anything from convenience goods, e-commerce packages and AI provides real-time monitoring of other vehicles’ speeds and trajectories. Emergency SOS (ESOS) automatically alerts Emergency Services with location and other details following a serious accident. There’s also a Driver Aware (DMS) feature that monitors the driver to combat distracted and/or drowsy driving, and a Vehicle Aware (ADAS) system, that monitors the road and cars in front, warning drivers of vehicle and pedestrian danger. On top of all that, there’s Realtime tracking which uses a built-in GPS location beacon and synchronized realtime video. It may be a dash cam by name, but the Nextbase iQ system would appear to be a

groceries to car parts, electronics and medical supplies. Loaded up with a suite of cameras, lidars and radars, it uses a self-driving system developed by Mobileye which includes that company’s Road Experience Management - a continuously updated map. Udelv says it aims at having 50,000 units of the Transporter on public roads by 2028, with the first Transporters being deployed in 2023. The company says it has already received more than 1,000 reservations for the Transporter. whole lot more than that. “There is nothing on the market that rises to the level of Nextbase iQ,” said Richard Browning, Chief Marketing and Sales Officer for Nextbase. “Over two years and from the ground up, we have re-imagined what a Dash Cam can be and created the world’s first true Smart Dash Cam, utilising AI-technology and Cloud-connectivity to give drivers a complete sense of safety and security. “Never before has there been a smart connected-car product that offers so much benefit in one package. GM ANNOUNCES NEW EV MODELS, CONCEPTS AND BRIGHTDROP EXPANSION THERE WAS NO surprise to see General Motors (GM) step up and make some big announcements at CES. Amongst those announcements was that BrightDrop - which GM revealed as a new venture at last year’s CES and which offers a range of products, including electric vehicles,

for transport and delivery fleets – had added the retail behemoth Walmart to its list of customers, and that it was also expanding its relationship with delivery giant FedEx. Walmart has, BrightDrop says, signed an agreement to reserve 5,000 of the company’s EV600 and EV410 electric delivery vans to support the retailer’s growing last mile delivery network and goal of operating a zero-emissions logistics fleet by 2040. FedEx has signed an agreement with BrightDrop reserving priority production for 2,000 electric delivery vans over the


next few years. This agreement adds to FedEx’s initial reservation of 500 BrightDrop EVs announced last year. In addition, FedEx is, reportedly, working on a plan to add up to 20,000 over time. Also at CES, GM revealed the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV – the full-size pickup that, as with other electric vehicles, utilises GM’s Ultium EV platform. At launch, the Silverado EV will be available in two configurations, an RST First Edition, and a fleet-oriented WT (Work Truck) model – and is expected to deliver 640km range on a full charge along with 10.2kW of offboard power; have four-wheel steering; a fixed-glass roof; a large, 17-inch-diagonal LCD freeform infotainment screen, and the latest vehicle technologies. GM’s plan to lead EV market share in the

U.S. will also include a Chevrolet Equinox EV SUV with an estimated MSRP starting around $30,000 ($AU42,000) in the U.S., as well as a larger Chevrolet Blazer EV SUV. Both Equinox EV and Blazer EV will be available in 2023. The company says that it and Cruise – the self-driving car developer acquired by GM in 2016 - are pursuing autonomous mobility with the aim to deliver the first personal autonomous vehicle from GM as soon as mid-decade. GM says its Ultra Cruise system will enable doorto-door hands-free driving in 95 per cent of driving scenarios and will enter production in 2023, with the Ultiumbased Cadillac Celestiq ultra-luxury sedan being among the first models to be equipped with the technology. CADILLAC INNERSPACE AUTONOMOUS CONCEPT GM’S LUXURY CADILLAC brand unveiled its pitch for autonomous luxury personal mobility at CES in the form of the twoperson Innerspace concept. The Innerspace concept is designed to be fully autonomous - allowing passengers to engage with a wild and comprehensive suite of features. There are, apparently, AI-driven biometric inputs and interfaces, accessible via a large display, that allow passengers to select from Augmented Reality Engagement, Entertainment and Wellness Recovery themes (whatever they may be).

On the exterior, the InnerSpace features expansive, panoramic glass on the roof and part of the body sides for almost unimpeded views. The roof opens with the doors for easy entry and exit. The InnerSpace’s tyres, developed by Goodyear, feature SoundComfort technology designed to help mitigate soundwave resonance within the tyre and deliver a quiet ride. They incorporate Goodyear’s Sightline technology that transmits information about pressure, temperature, load, and other performance factors to the cabin. The Innerspace is part of Cadillac’s Halo Concept Portfolio of vehicles. The brand introduced the first two Halo concepts at last year’s CES: the PersonalSpace, a single-seat, personal vertical take-off and landing concept; and the SocialSpace, an autonomous vehicle for up to six.


LAWS PROTECTING AGAINST HARASSMENT RECENT MEDIA STORIES about what may be happening in some parliamentarian’s offices is a reminder to all employers and business owners that no-one is immune from a sexual harassment claim. The Fair Work Act and Regulations will soon be amended to give employers more power to sack perpetrators of sexual harassment. The Federal Government has announced it will amend section 387 of the Act to clarify that sexual harassment can be a valid reason for termination when determining whether a dismissal was unfair. It will also amend the definition of “serious misconduct” in the Fair Work Regulations to include sexual harassment, to clarify that this behaviour can justify summary dismissal. In addition, education and guidance on unfair dismissal and other workplace rights will be updated. The Act will include a ‘stop sexual harassment order’ by clarifying that a stop-bullying order is available in the context of harassment.

The SummerNats car festival is more than just a big, beautiful gathering of petrolheads and their incredible machines. For those with a nose for these things, it can give an indication of future trends in the aftermarket sector. Lara Wilde attended the 34th edition of the festival in January, and as well as spending time behind the microphone in the commentating booth, she went on a quest to discover just what those trends might be.

OR MANY, THE mention of SummerNats brings to mind visions of mullet haircuts, bogans drinking slushies, and burnouts. The world’s wildest car festival has hosted crowds of automotive-loving patrons every year (except for the COVID-plagued 2021) since 1987 with peak crowds reaching almost 120,000 screaming fans. 36 | Motor Trader February 2022

Australia’s biggest horsepower party promises something for everyone. There are the much-loved daily drivers, the elite show cars, the peak performance machines on the dyno, and the mad monstrosities on the burnout pad. To a true car lover, every machine at SummerNats can be admired for one reason or another. Many of the beasts on the burnout pad could easily pass as show cars at your average Show and Shine. While I have a personal passion for steel bumper V8s, I can also appreciate the blood sweat and tears that go into creating an elite Mazda RX3. Whichever way you look at them though, every car at SummerNats is a cool car. And the secret to a cool car at SummerNats is to tick a couple of boxes. 1. The buy-in must be reasonable. If you have to pay $100,000 or more for the car

before you play with it, you are probably in the LS-swap-in-a-Lambo crowd and not reading the SummerNats room well (not that anyone wouldn’t love a Lambo with an LS). In an ideal world you can pick up your project car for $1,000 or less leaving plenty of bank to play God under the bonnet. 2. You need to think outside of the box to be completely unique while also having access to as many mainstream tools and parts as possible. An example of this thinking is Jessie Barbeler, who took a 1984 Suzuki Mighty Boy and shoehorned an 1150 horsepower (858kW) 408 LS into the party compartment. In the main pavilion at SummerNats this year, I met Nathan Giunco who built his XE Falcon sedan named JETFTR over the past 13 years. my first question to Nathan was, “What possessed you to invest in an XE 13 years ago?” In 2009, an XE Falcon was an ex-taxi. It was the car you picked up as a cheap family runabout for a few hundred bucks. It was a daggy car. In 2009, the cool kids were playing with Mustangs and Stingrays, not Falcons. So why did Nathan choose to sink a few hundred thousand dollars, and more than a decade, into a car that

notoriously had terrible doors? The answer? Because he liked the car. Because Nathan could see something in that XE that others could not. Because Nathan is ahead of the curve. Because Nathan is a SummerNats guy who sets trends. What does that mean? Why should you care, particularly if you have no intention of ever attending SummerNats, let alone building a car in which to cruise there?

Within 5 to 10 years, those new cars become a part of the second-hand market and are quickly snaffled by the car savvy who then chop, modify, and bedazzle them, making them their own in the world of street machines. So, who are the trend-setting fashionistas who will determine the price of secondhand cars and in-demand parts for modifications in the next 5-10 years? dropping the equivalent of the price of a small house to turn them into the street machine of SummerNats dreams. Let me introduce you to Mick. Mick bought his 1999 Ford AU Falcon station wagon for $50. He then spent close to $70,000 to supercharge the straight-six-cylinder motor. Mick then worked on the big green wagon customising the interior and modifying

the body so that he could compete at SummerNats in the Burnout Championship. His first qualifying run ended near tears as his radiator failed. Some frantic phone calls and desperate Facebook posts later and a new radiator was sourced and installed ready for the finals. Mick launched onto the pad with great gusto and within two minutes the rear of the wagon was engulfed in flame. Mick could not be happier. $70,000, a few years of hard work, 120 seconds of tyre-shredding joy, and he takes home the title of ‘SummerNats 6-Cylinder Burnout Champion’ and a prize cheque of $100. Would Mick do it all again? In a heartbeat. Would you want Mick dropping that $70,000 in your workshop or your aftermarket parts store? In a heartbeat. This year, I had the honour of being a commentator at SummerNats 34, and spent four days marinating in all things cars. From the elite hall to the super cruise to the burnout pad, I saw cars of all makes and modifications. Here are my predictions for what to prepare for in the next 5 to 10 years based on what I saw. I am not talking about the cool cars here, I am talking about the will-be-cool-in-thefuture cars - the no frills, plastic bumper ’90s cars. We have already seen the trend of skyrocketing prices for old-school, steel bumper JDM cars. An unmolested Toyota

KE20 Corolla is a rare unicorn with a ridiculous price tag (at least according to my bank manager!) but we are entering the age of the mid-’90s models. Mitsubishi Sigmas were a common sight at SummerNats 34, with the interest first being raised by Adrian Cuthbertson and his burnout car ‘Stigma’ a few years ago. That humble taxi favourite, the AU Falcon has a cult following online and the much sought-after Barra powerplant promises them a profitable future. Two-wheel-drive tradies’ utes that have high kilometres seem to be a favourite to drop in a powerful donk, with the Mazda Bravos, Ford Couriers and Holden Rodeos finally finding their moment to shine. The Commodore family, with the much sought-after Calais and HSV lines, has been pillaged too. Now, the die-hard fans are scraping the bottom of the barrel taking Berlina wagons and similar editions to rebirth them into something cool. Could there one day be a jaw-dropping Camira in the elite hall? It looks highly likely. So there you have it, my SummerNats prophecy for the cars to come. Just as the truly fashion-conscious stalk Paris Fashion Week to know if they should stock up on denim or sequins, I invite you to follow SummerNats so you can be prepared for the incoming wave of cashed-up car lovers who are looking to make their mark. HYUNDAI TO BUILD NEW HYDROGEN STATION AT COMPANY’S HQ

YUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY Australia (HMCA) is investing in a new hydrogen refuelling station in Sydney, to be located at its corporate headquarters in Macquarie Park. The new refueller will replace HMCA’s existing hydrogen refuelling station, which has been operational since 2014. The company says that the facility will enable faster refuelling and use ‘green’ hydrogen – produced using electrolysis and renewable energy – that is generated on site. It will also be used to showcase Hyundai’s hydrogen technologies. The station will produce up to 20kg of hydrogen per day, as well as providing 700bar refuelling capability. The company’s NEXO FCEV can travel up to 666km on a single

AGUAR’S I-PACE ALL-ELECTRIC SUV will now feature Amazon Alexa voice control, allowing for voice interaction with the carmaker’s Pivi Pro infotainment system features that includes navigation, media playback, phone calls, and compatible smart devices. Following its debut on the I-Pace, all new Jaguars with Pivi Pro will come with Alexa. Alexa voice control will enable a whole slew of requests – for example, ‘Alexa, navigate me to home’ – to be done by voice. Alexa also makes it possible to control compatible smart home features such as heating and lighting from the vehicle. For Australian owners who already

have an I-Pace with the Pivi Pro system, they will be offered the Alexa upgrade in a software-over-the-air update. CLASSIC MINI GIVEN NEW LIFE WITH EV CONVERSION

M

INI IS TO offer an electric conversion program for its classic cars. Called the Mini Recharged project, the program will enable owners of the original, small British car to get a potent electric drive system installed. However, recognising the classic status on the original Mini, the modifications will be reversible, with the original engine of each vehicle marked and stored so it can be reused in the event of a future retrofit. The new electric motor generates 90kW, giving the electrified Mini a push from 0-100km/h in approximately nine seconds. Mini hasn’t said what size battery pack is to be installed, but said it can be charged with an output of up to 6.6 kW and offers a predicted range of around 160km. On the inside, the Mini will retain the characteristic central instrument cluster,

but it will now display the drive temperature, the selected gear, range, and speed. The idea for the program came when the company built a one-off, electric version of the classic Mini for the 2018 New York Auto Show. The reaction to that car was, the company said, so positive that a team was created to investigate and develop a plan to make the electrification option available to classic Mini owners. The bespoke upcycling of the classic Mini is being carried out exclusively in the UK, with each converted vehicle given an individual number, making it unique.

GENERAL MOTORS (GM), which is pumping billions of dollars into its efforts to become a leading electric vehicle (EV) maker and is using its versatile Ultium battery system in its range of new vehicles, is set to offer EV technology components to customers outside of the automotive industry. Recognising that other industries are also looking to be cleaner and greener, GM will look to offer its tech to help those organisations meet their own sustainability targets. “As companies across many industries look to reduce their environmental impact, GM is uniquely positioned to serve as a leader not only through exciting new EVs across our brands, but through additional technology applications, and we look forward to bringing customers – existing and new – along with us on our zero-emissions journey,” said Travis Hester, GM vice president of Electric Vehicle Growth Operations. The company estimates that the market for electrification components – including in areas such as the automotive performance and aftermarket sectors; industrial markets; marine propulsion; and ground support equipment - could be close to $20 billion ($AU28 billion) by 2030. RENAULT, NISSAN & MITSUBISHI ALLIANCE TO INVEST BILLIONS IN EV STRATEGY

R

ENAULT, NISSAN, AND Mitsubishi are to invest more than $AU36 billion over the next five years to support their alliance’s electrification strategy – a strategy that will see the development of 35 new electric vehicles (EV), almost all of which will be built on five common platforms, by 2030. The Alliance members, who follow a Leader-Follower system in which one of the members takes the lead in the development of a particular technology or vehicle that is then shared with the others, will enhance usage of common platforms in the coming years from 60 per cent today to more than 80 per cent of its combined 90 models by 2026. Those five common EV platforms will be the CMF-AEV – what the companies call ‘the most affordable platform in the world’; the KEI-EV platform for ultra-compact EVs; the LCV-EV platform family for electric vans; the CMF-EV platform, that is being used as the base for models such as the Nissan Ariya EV crossover and Renault Megane E-Tech Electric ; and the CMF-BEV platform, to be launched in 2024, and which the companies say will be the foundation for models including the new compact EV that will replace the Nissan Micra. The Alliance says it is working with common partners on battery systems to achieve real scale and affordability, enabling it to reduce battery costs by 50 per cent in 2026 and 65 per cent by 2028, and it will, by 2030, have a total of 220

All-solid-state battery technology (ASSB) – which is claimed to offer double the energy density versus current liquid lithium-ion batteries – are on the cards too, with Nissan picked to lead innovations in that area. The companies also plan to control 100 per cent of hardware and software systems in-house, and be in control of optimising battery reuse, notably with second life battery applications, recycling and achieving sustainable solutions over the full battery life cycle. Shared innovation in technology systems will, the companies say, see more than 10 million vehicles on the road, across 45 models, equipped with autonomous driving systems by 2026 and, by the same year, 25 million cars will be connected using the Alliance Cloud system. The companies also aim to introduce the Google ecosystem in its cars.

In the next five years, Land Rover says it will build six pure-electric vehicles across its model lines, with the first to arrive in 2024. The company has already announced that it is aiming to be able to offer electrified options of all its models by 2030. “We are delighted to introduce an expanded Land Rover PHEV offering, starting with 23MY Range Rover Evoque P300e,” said Scott Maynard, Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover Australia. “Australian drivers are increasingly considering electrified powertrains – our expanded PHEV line-up offers compelling alternatives to traditional ICE engines, providing customers with more choice. As part of our global Reimagine strategy and commitment to sustainability-rich modern luxury by design, Land Rover will offer pure electric power, nameplate by nameplate, by 2030.”

ZEEKR, THE CHINESE EV brand owned by Geely (also owners of Volvo), and the maker of the very smartlooking Zeekr 01, is to collaborate with Waymo – a subsidiary of Google owners Alphabet - on the development of a new all-electric vehicle for deployment in the Waymo One autonomous ridehailing fleet in the US. Waymo One currently runs a driverless ride-hailing service in Phoenix, Arizona, and has plans to expand that to San Francisco. The new vehicle is being developed at Zeekr’s R&D facility Sweden and, the company says, will be designed for autonomous-use cases and come with a fully configurable cabin, both with and without driver controls, that can be tailored for the Waymo One fleet.

BENTLEY ANNOUNCES IT WILL BUILD FIVE EV MODELS BY 2030

A

NOTHER DAY, ANOTHER major announcement in the world of electric vehicles. This time it is Bentley, the venerable maker of big, powerful, uber-luxurious motors. The company announced in January that, as part of its Beyond100 strategy to reach carbon neutrality, it will begin what it calls a ‘Five-in-Five plan’, committing to launching a new electric model each year from 2025. The company had already announced in 2020 that it was set on becoming carbon neutral and an allelectric vehicle manufacturer by 2030. Bentley, which is owned by the Volkswagen Group, said it would invest £2.5 billion ($AU4.8 billion) into realising the plan. That investment will, in part, be used to create what it calls a ‘Dream factory’ at its Crewe, UK headquarters - a digital, zero environmental impact manufacturing facility, that will see an increase of on-site energy production, including raising the number of energy-generating solar panels to 40,000 over the next two years. The company has already made some moves into electrification – it currently has the Bentayga SUV PHEV (plug-in hybrid) in its model range, with a Flying Spur PHEV to

be available later this year. It has also been researching the use of biofuels and e-fuels in parallel to its electrification program. “This latest announcement regarding Bentley’s Beyond100 plan confirms the initiation of a major transformative phase in the company’s long and illustrious history,” said Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and CEO of Bentley Motors. “The world is changing, and we need to play our part in neutralising our environmental impact. That means delivering on our aim to be end-to-end carbon neutral by 2030 and reaffirming our role as the leader in sustainable luxury mobility.”

VOLVO TO LAUNCH RIDE PILOT SELF-DRIVING TECH

OLVO CARS IS getting ready to introduce its Ride Pilot autonomous driving feature to customers. While autonomous driving functionalities are currently being tested on roads in Sweden, the company says that by the middle of this year it intends to begin testing on roads in California, where the climate, traffic conditions and regulatory framework provide a favourable environment for the introduction of autonomous driving. Once it has been verified as safe for use on highways, Ride Pilot is planned to be available as an add-on subscription on the company’s upcoming fully electric SUV, to revealed later this year. Ride Pilot uses a comprehensive set of sensors and cameras, and Volvo worked with software company Zenseact and Lidar developer Luminar on its development. The sensor set-up, including the Lidar, will Volvo Cars is getting ready to introduce its autonomous driving feature Ride Pilot to customers

TOYOTA DEMONSTRATES AUTONOMOUS DRIFTING TECHNOLOGY

E

VERY CARMAKER IS looking for ways to make the occupants of their vehicles more secure, and both through the way they are constructed and the high-tech driver assistance systems that are being created, cars have probably never been safer. The Toyota Research institute (TRI) recently claimed another step forward in this research, using a specially customised Supra - equipped with computer-controlled steering, throttle, clutch displacement, transmission and individual wheel braking - to demonstrate autonomous drifting technology. Drifting may seem to be the domain of skilled, professional race drivers, but Toyota said that while most crashes occur in mundane situations, in some extreme situations, drivers may need to make

maneuvers that take their vehicle close to and, at times, beyond normal limits of handling. The company said its tech is able to calculate a whole new trajectory every 20th of a second to balance the car, and uses something called Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) that can smoothly transition from dynamic drifting to grip driving. “At TRI, our goal is to use advanced technologies that augment and amplify humans, not replace them,” said Avinash Balachandran, senior manager of TRI’s Human Centric Driving Research. “Through this project, we are expanding the region in which a car is controllable, with the goal of giving regular drivers the instinctual reflexes of a professional race car driver to be able to handle the most challenging emergencies and keep people safer on the road.”

NOKIAN TYRES HAS revealed a concept tyre that is made almost entirely of materials that are recycled or renewable. Called the Green Step, 93 per cent of the winter tyre is made of those materials with all rubber being natural, and renewable oils, such as canola oil, being used. Almost all plasticiser, resin and processing aids are from renewable resources; natural rice husk ash silica is a main filler for the tread and sidewall; and renewable cord fibre is used to make the tyre tougher. The carbon black used in the tyre is derived from end-of-life tyres, and the butyl used in the inner surface, as well as the steel in the belts and bead wires in the structure, are mainly recycled. By 2030, Nokian Tyres says it is looking to have 50 per cent of all the raw materials used in its tyres be recycled or renewable, and the company is also researching alternative sources to natural rubber, such as the guyule plant. A

NYONE WITH AN interest in the automotive world, and particularly sports cars, will know the name Gordon Murray. The British car designer has had a storied career – one in which he designed Formula One championship-winning race cars, and, perhaps most famously, the car often dubbed the greatest car of all time, the McLaren F1. In the mid-2000s, Murray established his own design company, followed in 2017 by a manufacturing business – Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) – to make limited-run models. In 2020, GMA unveiled its absolutely stunning first model, the T.50 - a rearwheel-drive, mid-engine hypercar that is powered by a brutally powerful Cosworth58 | Motor Trader February 2022

IT IS A TWO-SEAT, REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE, MID-ENGINE SPORTS CAR WHICH WILL BE POWERED BY A SPECIALLY RECONFIGURED VERSION OF THE T.50’S ENGINE, AND IT IS STUNNING TO LOOK AT, INSIDE AND OUT . . . designed 3.9-litre V12, has an astonishing rear fan that assists aerodynamics and, like the McLaren F1, has a three-seat configuration with the driver positioned centrally in the cabin. That car caused quite a stir when it appeared and after creating a further T.50 model, the T.50S, GMA has now followed it up with this, the T.33. This new supercar has, said Murray, been created from scratch and is not a development of the T.50. It is a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive, midengine sports car which will be powered by a specially reconfigured version of the



T.50’s engine, and it is stunning to look at, inside and out, with a wonderfully proportioned design that will see its carbon fibre body built around a newly developed carbon and aluminium superlight architecture. Its overall targeted weight is less than 1100kg. The T.33’s GMA.2 engine, derived from the all-aluminium Cosworth GMA V12 in the T.50 and denoted by bespoke T.33 yellow cam covers, has been reconfigured and numerous components and systems re-designed. Weighing just 178kg, the engine produces 452kW and 451Nm. That power is channelled through a bespoke six-speed transmission which will be offered with a manual gearchange or an Instantaneous Gearchange System (IGS) paddle shift system. As standard, the GMA T.33 has a six-speed manual gearbox with that paddle shift transmission as an option. While GMA hasn’t revealed performance figures, there can be no doubt they’ll be absolutely stellar. The powertrain of the T.33 is semi-structural, with the engine and transmission carrying all the traction, 60 | Motor Trader February 2022

carbon fibre monocoque and iFrame featuring cored carbon fibre panels, and occupant safety is bolstered by a Formula One inspired Safety Cell. GMA has developed a new suspension package for the T.33. Lightweight double wishbones are deployed front and rear in conjunction with coil springs over aluminium alloy dampers. The front suspension configuration features an anti-roll bar and aluminium alloy uprights. At the rear of the chassis, aluminium alloy uprights and toe control links are deployed, along with an Inclined Axis Shear Mounting (IASM) system. The

IASM system has the rear suspension mounted directly to the transmission casing with the torsional loads supported by the chassis and the entire powertrain mounted on anti-vibration bushes. There’s also a newly developed, bespoke rack and pinion, hydraulically assisted steering system, and the braking system consists of Brembo Carbon Ceramic Material (CCM) brake discs (370mm x 34mm front/340mm x 34mm rear). These feature six-piston aluminium Monobloc alloy front callipers and four-piston aluminium Monobloc alloy rear callipers. The T.33 rides on forged aluminium alloy 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, weighing less than 7kg each. The wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres (235/35 R19 front, 295/30 R20 rear). While the T.33 does not have the rearmounted fan of the T.50, the T.33 does offer very efficient aerodynamics in the form of a Passive Boundary Layer Control (PBLC) system. floor and GMA says that a diffuser, with a boundary layer removal duct activated by the base suction behind the car, enables a level of aerodynamic efficiency that is 30 per cent more effective than the conventional ground effect supercar. This ground effect system meant the GMA design team did not need to equip the T.33 with the wings, skirts and vents. There is, however, an active rear spoiler, which deploys automatically, but can also be activated by the driver. On the inside, the cabin is a simple design. concessions to the digital world we live in and so, while all the main controls are rotary and analogue, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard. There’s a carbon steering wheel and adjustable carbon seats and a front stowage compartment and twin side luggage lockers offer a combined 280 litres of space. Not bad. As with many

makers of the highest level of supercars, GMA will offer T.33 owners a high level of involvement in their vehicle’s construction and plenty of personalisation options. Customers can choose between righthand or left-hand drive and manual or IGS paddle shift transmissions. They can collaborate with the GMA design team to configure their own bespoke ergonomic and interior specification and choice of body colour. Just 100 of the T.33 are to be built and, as an exclusive, limited-run supercar, it is not cheap - you’ll need deep pockets and a friendly bank manager to get your hands on one. At £1.37m (before taxes) – that’s $AU2.16 million – it is a pricey prospect, but if you could, you would, wouldn’t you? February 2022 Motor Trader | 63

FORD TO DOUBLE PRODUCTION OF THE F-150 LIGHTNING PICK-UP

F

ORD IS PLANNING to nearly double production of the F-150 Lightning pick-up to 150,000 units per year. Soaring demand for the all-electric Lightning has prompted Ford to make the move, with the company reporting it is closing in on 200,000 reservations. With production to start in the first half of this year, it is going to put in a big effort to satisfy demand. “With nearly 200,000 reservations, our teams are working hard and creatively to break production constraints to get more F-150 Lightning trucks into the hands of our customers,” said Kumar Galhotra, president of The Americas & International

battery models equipped with the Max Trailer Package is aimed to be 4536kg. Payload is up to 907kg on the Standard Range battery model with 18-inch wheels. With enhanced Pro Power Onboard, customers can take advantage of built-in electrical outlets to directly power a variety of tools, electronics and appliances away from home. Standard on base trims is 2.4kW of power, up to 9.6kW on top models - a combination of up to 2.4kW available through the (400 litre) frunk and up to 7.2kW through outlets in the cabin and bed. At its swiftest, the F-150 Lightning will charge at 150kW when plugged into a DC public fast charger and offer an estimated 40-minute 15-80 per cent charging time. A choice of 11.3kW single or 19.2kW double home AC chargers is offered. In addition to scaling Lightning production, Ford has also said it will triple production for the Mustang Mach-E and expects to reach 200,000-plus units per year by 2023. The company is putting plenty of resources, and billions of dollars, into its electric vehicle push. PRODUCTION ENDS FOR LOTUS ELISE, EXIGE AND EVORA

L

OTUS HAS ANNOUNCED the end of production - and the building of the last units - of its Elise, Exige and Evora sports cars. Between those three model lines, and over the course of 26 years, the company says a total of 51,738 cars will have come off the production line. Combined, they represent almost half of the total production of Lotus in its 73-year history (additionally, 9,715 sports cars were built for Lotus’ third-party clients, including GM and Tesla). The current assembly lines are to dismantled and replaced with all-new state-of-the-art facilities in support of the all-new Emira factory. The Emira will be the last petrol-powered sports car to be built by Lotus and full production begins in the first half of 2022 spring, after the prototype and test phases currently underway are completed. The Emira will be powered by a midmounted, 3.5-litre supercharged V6 developing 298kW. Top speed is 290km/h and the sprint to 100km/h can be done in 4.3 seconds. Lotus Exige

Joining the collection will be the last Elise, a Sport 240 Final Edition finished in Yellow and the last of 35,124 cars; the last Exige, a Cup 430 Final Edition in Heritage Racing Green and the last of 10,497; and the last Evora, a GT430 Sport finished in Dark Metallic Grey and the last of a production run of 6,117. Lotus has shifted gears to focus on an all-electric future with the Evija hypercar. It will be followed by the all-electric Type 132, Lotus’ first SUV, which is set to be unveiled in 2022. MITSUBISHI INTRODUCES NEW TOP MODEL VARIANT TO PAJERO SPORT RANGE

M

ITSUBISHI’S 22MY PAJERO Sport range will include a new, top-ofthe-range, GSR variant, and two new 2WD models, starting with the entry GLX grade, followed by GLS. The GSR 4WD model will be exclusively available in two colours – Black Mica and White Diamond – and feature black exterior and interior accents, with matching black 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear bumper garnish, radiator grille and roof rails. All-terrain capability comes thanks to Mitsubishi’s Super Select II 4WD system which offers four modes: 2WD High Range, Full-Time 4WD and High and Low Range 4WD with locked centre differential. Four Off-Road modes are available: Gravel, Mud/Snow, Sand or Rock. Like the 4WD variants, the 2WD Pajero Sport models are powered by a 2.4-litre MIVEC turbocharged diesel engine and utilise the same body-on-frame configuration. Key standard features

NISSAN NAVARA PRO-4X WARRIOR CLOSING IN ON 1000 UNITS

W

HILE THE AUSTRALIAN automotive manufacturing scene seemed to all but disappear a few years ago when Holden, Ford, and Toyota closed down their production operations, there is life within the domestic sector. Take the Nissan Navara PRO-4X Warrior. Launched in September last year, the flagship of the Navara range is built specifically for Australian conditions and comes via a team-up between the Japanese manufacturer and Australian engineering company Premcar. And in the few months since launch, Premcar has revealed it has built more than 750 examples and expects to hit 1000 by the end of March this year. Based on the Navara PRO-4X, the Warrior undergoes extensive re-manufacturing at the Premcar facility in Victoria, running through 10 manufacturing stations. Each stop takes around an hour to complete and includes, amongst other things, the fitting of the winch compatible bullbar, full underbody protection, fully revised suspension and a unique towbar. Key updates include enhancements to performance and capability with wheel, tyre and suspension changes to deliver improved ground clearance, a wider stance and improved ride and handling.

The Warrior is equipped with the Navara’s 2.3-litre, common-rail, four-cylinder, twinturbo diesel, producing 140kW and 450Nm from as low as 1500rpm. Towing capacity is rated at 3.5 tonnes braked. Premcar says it has the capacity to produce up to 10 cars a day, five days a week. “This is so much more than some kind of sticker pack,” said Bernie Quinn, Premcar Engineering Director. “This is an extensively re-engineered vehicle that’s designed, engineered and built by some of the world’s most talented automotive manufacturing experts, right here in Victoria. “That’s not just a win for Nissan, and for Premcar, but for the automotive manufacturing industry more generally. We have always had world-beating talent, and it’s so rewarding to watch them produce world-beating vehicles again.”

NEW BMW M8 COMPETITION COUPÉ AND GRAN COUPÉ ON THEIR WAY TO AUSTRALIA

MW HAS UPDATED and upgraded its M8 Competition Coupé and Gran Coupé models, and the revised flagship variants will arrive in Australia later this year. Changes include new paint finish offerings, the addition of the M Lights Shadow Line, new interior combinations and special BMW Motorsport badging to mark the 50th anniversary of BMW M. Exterior colours include Skyscraper grey metallic, M Brooklyn grey metallic and Isle of Man green metallic as well as BMW Individual Tanzanite Blue metallic. Four new variants of the Frozen finishes - Frozen Pure Grey metallic, Daytona Beach Blue and Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic – are now available. Australian-delivered models will feature M Lights Shadow Line, which incorporates a dark design for the inserts and chrome elements inside the headlamps. Standard BMW Head-Up Display offers M-specific displays on both M8 models, while the Set-up button on the centre console allows direct access to the settings for the engine, damper, steering, M xDrive all-wheel drive system, and brake system. A new 12.3-inch control display sits up front, and standard equipment offering includes Parking Assistant including reversing assistant, telephony with wireless charging and the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system with 16 speakers and 1400 watts of power.


A NEW LOOK LINE-UP FOR MAZDA CX-8 IN 2022

All excellent stuff to be sure, but it is what is under the body that makes the M8 models the headline act for BMW M. Power comes via a M TwinPower Turbo V8 that kicks out 460kW and 750Nm. That power is directed through an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and the M xDrive all-wheel drive system. Performance is outstanding, with 100km/h reached in 3.2 seconds from a standing start. Chassis technology includes electronically controlled shock absorbers and an electromechanical M Servotronic steering system, as well as an integrated brake system that allows the driver to choose between a comfort-oriented and a sporty pedal feeling. An M Compound brake system is standard, with M Carbon ceramic brakes available as an option.

MRLP pricing for the 2022 BMW M8 Competition Coupe is $362,900 with the Gran Coupe coming in at $359,900.

THE MAZDA CX-8 line-up is getting more petrol models through the range. The seven-seater SUV first launched in 2018 as a diesel-only model, with a petrol variant introduced in 2020, but with more than 70 per cent of customers choosing petrol, Mazda is expanding the available models. Now, all FWD variants will feature the naturally aspirated 2.5L Skyactiv-G petrol engine that produces 140kW of power and 252Nm of torque. All-wheel-drive models will be exclusively powered by Mazda’s 2.2L Skyactiv-D twin-turbo diesel engine, which delivers 140kW and 450Nm. The CX-8 has a five-star ANCAP safety rating and includes a comprehensive list of passive and active safety features across all model grades including blind-Spot Monitoring, Lane-keep Assist System, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Smart Brake Support and Smart City Brake Support for front and rear. KIA AUSTRALIA REVEALS EV6 KEY FEATURES AND PRICING

HE EV6, KIA’S first dedicated battery electric vehicle (EV), will soon be available in Australia, and the local arm of Kia has revealed more features and pricing for the stylish crossover. Built on the company’s new 800V Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the EV6 will be available in two grades – the Air and GT-Line variants - both fitted with the long-range, 77.4hkWh battery pack. The EV6 Air will be available in rearwheel-drive only (RWD) with the top trim GT-Line available in RWD or all-wheeldrive (AWD) options.

The RWD single-motor EV6 entry-level Air comes in with 168kW and 350Nm, plus a driving range of 528km. Sitting on 19-inch wheels, the Air delivers pretty decent Performance, with Kia claiming 100km/h can be reached in 7.3 seconds.

Infotainment and safety features across the range are extensive. Standard on all models are high-quality displays, navigation, wireless phone charger, paddle shifters, LED interior lighting, USB chargers, 12V outlet in the boot, power folding mirrors, smart key and push button start, dual zone climate control, and much more. Standard ADAS safety features include AEB with Junction Turning, Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go, and Front and Rear Parking Sensors amongst them. The Kia EV6 Air will be available in six colours, while the EV6 GT-Line will be available in five colours, including Moonscape matte paint exclusive to the model. 500 units of the EV6 (Air and GT-Line trims) have been earmarked for Australia during 2022 and the allocation will be staggered throughout the year. With local interest having been strong, Kia Australia says it is hoping to increase that number.

The entry-level Air model is priced at $67,990, the single-motor GT-Line variant at $74,990, and the AWD GT-Line model at $82,990. The performance focused EV6 eGT is scheduled to arrive in Australia either late in 2022 or early 2023. February 2022 Motor Trader | 73

ASTON MARTIN UNLEASHES THE POTENT DBX 707 SUV

A

STON MARTIN HAS unveiled an absolutel monster version of its DBX SUV. Dubbed the DBX 707, the name comes from the 707PS (697hp or 520kW) kicked out by the exceptionally powerful engine under the bonnet. That 4.0-litre twinturbocharged V8 features ball bearing turbochargers and a bespoke engine calibration, and also delivers 900Nm. Those figures represent an increase of 116kW and 200Nm over the standard V8 DBX. There’s a 9-speed ‘wet clutch’ automatic

transmission too which, the company says, is capable of both managing much increased torque loadings compared with a regular torque converter automatic, and offer faster gear changes. Performance numbers are eye-opening. 0-100km/h is done in 3.3 seconds and top speed is whopping 310km/h. Standard fitment of Carbon Ceramic Brakes deliver the stopping power, and wheels and tyres are 22-inch as standard with optional 23-inch alloys available. The DBX707 also features a new version


of the electronic limited slip rear differential (e-diff) designed to aid the SUV’s sprinting ability through the lower gears. Torque distribution frontto-rear remains fully automatic, with the ability to send up to 100 per cent of that torque to the rear axle on demand. Recalibration and modification of the suspension and the eARC (Electronic Active Roll Control) system have been made to improve body control, steering response, and balance of the car, and changes have also been made to the Dynamic Drive modes. Styling includes a new front-end that sees a larger front grille and all-new design of the DRL. There are new air intakes and brake cooling ducts, plus a new front splitter profile. At the back there’s a new lip spoiler added to the roof wing and an enlarged twin rear diffuser beneath the new large diameter quad exhaust system. Inside, Sport seats are fitted as standard. All seat options come with 16-way electric adjustment plus heating in front and rear. There are three choices of interior environments - standard-fit Accelerate, which features a mix of leather and Alcantara, as well as the optional Inspire Comfort and Inspire Sport. Q by Aston Martin - the brand’s bespoke service – offers an extensive range of options, from graphics through to tinted carbons and bespoke materials on both the interior and exterior. DBX 707 production is due to commence in Q1 of 2022, with first deliveries scheduled to begin in Q2 2022.

ALL NEW HAVAL H6 GT CONFIRMED FOR AUSTRALIA CHINA’S GWM WILL be adding to the Haval brand’s line-up in Australia with the sporty H6 GT model to launch into the local market in the second quarter of this year. It’s a really nice-looking vehicle with significant styling changes from the regular H6 SUV, including dual spoilers and twin exhaust outlets at the rear, and a front end featuring a wider grille and an air intake at the lower end of the bonnet. Core interior features such as the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch central display are shared with the standard H6, but the GT variant gets sports seats and unique cabin trim. The GT will also share the 150kW/320Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged engine and 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission found in the standard H6. However, it does get highperformance Brembo brakes. Its wheelbase matches that of the H6 at 2738mm but it is 74mm longer at 4727mm, 54mm wider at 1940mm, and height is up by 5mm to 1729mm. The H6 GT will come with a long list of safety equipment including Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning. NEW CAR AND MOTORCYCLE SALES SHOW GROWTH IN 2021 AS EV SALES SURGE

N

EW CAR SALES in Australia cleared the one million mark in 2021. According to VFACTS data published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), a total of 1,049,831 vehicles were sold during the year, a whopping 14.5 per cent increase on the 916,968 vehicles sold during what was a COVID-ravaged 2020. In Queensland, sales were up 17.4 per cent, with 229,775 vehicles sold in 2021 compared to 195,769 in 2020. These annual figures are pleasing, although the tail end of the year was rough with sluggish sales. Also, the annual sales figure is fractionally lower than the 1,062,867 sold in pre-COVID 2019, which was itself the lowest annual sales result reported in VFACTS since 2011. However, considering the ongoing challenges that COVID continues to

Automotive manufacturers are continuing to work to strengthen supply chains in 2022.” SUVs and light commercial vehicles sold well throughout 2021 with 531,700 SUVs sold, up 16.9 per cent on 2020, while 253,254 light commercial vehicles were sold, up 23.2 per cent on 2020. Passenger vehicle sales totalled 221,556 a decrease of 0.2 per cent on 2020 figures. Toyota was the highest selling brand for the year, with 223,642 vehicles sold resulting in 21.3 per cent of overall market share. Toyota has been the nation’s market leader since 2003, and the Japanese manufacturer also bagged the top-selling model spot for 2021, with the Hi-Lux selling 52,801 units. The Ford Ranger was snapping at the heels of the Hi-Lux, selling 50,279 units for the year. A distant second place for brands was Mazda, which managed 101,119 sales and a 9.6 per cent market share. In third place was Hyundai (72,872 vehicles sold, 6.9 per cent), fourth place was Ford (71,380 vehicles sold, 6.8 per cent market share), and fifth spot went to Kia (67,964 vehicles sold, 6.5 per cent market share). The sluggish market recorded at the end of last year continued into 2022 with January’s sales figures of 75,963 vehicles

representing a fall of 4.8 per cent on the same time in 2021. Sales in Queensland fell 1.3 per cent to 16,423. Toyota continued its winning ways, being the market leader for January with 15,333 vehicles sold, The Hilux was the best-selling model with 3,591 units being snapped up by customers.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN 2021 Of special interest has been the sales numbers for electric vehicles. While Australia lags much of the developed world in the uptake of EVs (model choice as well as price are still hurdles to overcome) sales were strong last year, with the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) releasing figures for 2021 that included sales numbers of models from Tesla. According to the EVC, sales of plug-in electric vehicles tripled over the past year, with 20,655 units sold against a paltry 6,900 in 2020. The bulk of those sales were accounted for by Tesla with 12,094 units of the company’s Model 3 making their way to Australians during the year. The EVC says that electric vehicles now account for 1.95 per cent of new vehicles sales, up from 0.78 per cent in 2020. Scooters make up the smallest portion of the market with 4,821 new units sold, an increase of 8.1 per cent on sales in 2020.

It comes as no surprise that many employers across Australia have commenced collecting their 78 | Motor Trader February 2022

employees’ COVID-19 vaccination status. However, on 30 November 2021, Virgin Australia entered into Federal Court consent orders to delete all proof of certain COVID-19 vaccination documents. In this article, we explain who the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) applies to, when employers can collect an employee’s vaccination status, and what employers must do with the information they collect. Does the Privacy Act apply to vaccination status? The Australian Privacy Principles (APP) in the


Privacy Act apply to the collection, use and disclosure of personal information. An employee’s COVID-19 vaccination status is personal information because it constitutes health information about an identified individual that is considered sensitive information. Who must comply with the APPs? An employer’s organisation is an ‘APP entity’ and must comply with the APPs if it: • had an annual turnover of over $3 million for the previous financial year • provides a health service and holds any health information (e.g. most medical centres) • discloses personal information about another individual for a benefit, service or advantage • is a contracted service provider for a Commonwealth contract or a credit reporting body. An organisation includes an individual, body corporate, partnership, other unincorporated association, or trust. If an employer is not an APP entity, it will only need to ensure that employees have voluntarily consented to the collection and storage of their vaccination status (the below requirements will not apply). Collecting an employee’s vaccination status (APP 3) An employer can collect an employee’s vaccination status if the employee consents and collection is reasonably necessary for the employer’s functions or activities. If an employee does not consent, an employer can still require collection of the employee’s vaccination status if they reasonably believe that the collection is necessary to lessen or prevent a serious threat to the life, health or safety of any individual or to public health and safety. Employers can also collect an employee’s vaccination status if collection is required or authorised by an Australian law, including a public health direction. Notifying employees of the collection of their vaccination status (APP 5) Before or as soon as practicable after collecting an employee’s vaccination status, employers must take reasonable steps to notify the employee of the following:

• whether the collection is required or authorised by law • the purpose of the collection • the consequences if the employee’s vaccination status is not collected • how the employer may use or disclose the employee’s vaccination status • information about the employer’s privacy policy. Storing an employee’s vaccination status Once an employee’s vaccination status is collected, the ‘employee records exemption’ applies to the storage of the information. Employers can store an employee’s vaccination status on the employee’s personnel file, and the usual rules in the Privacy Act regarding the use or disclosure of, or access to, personal information do not apply. However, as a matter of best practice, employers should still store an employee’s vaccination status securely and limit the use and disclosure of the information. Lessons for employers While employers can collect and store an employee’s vaccination status in some circumstances, it is important that policies and procedures comply with the Privacy Act. Created to help address the skills shortage that exists across the automotive industry in Queensland, the VET Trainer Scholarship will award two aspiring trainers the opportunity to undertake a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) course, valued at $2,500. Each round, one female and one male candidate will be extended the chance to complete the highly sought-after course fully funded, through which they will learn the skills to develop and deliver training in the vocational education and training (VET) sector. “We have seen strong interest in the industry from those looking to upskill and begin their journey as automotive trainers,” said Paul Kulpa, MTA Institute General Manager. “MTA Queensland is committed to progressing the careers of those within the industry and ensuring that we have skilled and experienced trainers teaching and inspiring the next generation. MTA INSTITUTE CONFERENCE BRINGS TRAINERS TOGETHER FROM ACROSS THE STATE

T

HE MTA INSTITUTE is the largest private provider of automotive apprenticeships in Queensland, and in the past 18 months has grown substantially, now delivering face-to-face, in-the-workshop training to more than 2200 students across the state in all automotive sectors – from light vehicle to heavy commercial, from auto electrical to parts interpreting, from motorcycle mechanical to mobile plant. From Queensland’s remote regional areas to its major urban centres, the delivery of this training is the task of the Institute’s highly qualified and experienced trainers who, given the vast size of the state, work semi-independently,

successfully delivering training using state-of-the-art digital technology hardware and software with support from the Institute’s staff based in Brisbane. Towards the end of each year, the Institute brings the trainers together to


its Brisbane headquarters for a two-day conference to discuss industry advances, compare experiences, attend professional development seminars across a range of areas, and even learn more personal skills in areas such as nutrition. For 2021, these workshops and seminars covered topics that included the latest in training delivery, digital solutions, and business development. Also on the agenda, and with a nod to the advancements and direction that the automotive industry is taking, were sessions on battery technology delivered by John Kilby, Training Manager for Century Yuasa Batteries, and a presentation by Phil Austin, Training Manager Pacific, from Tesla. The annual trainers’ conference, which this time was delivered partly in-person and, as is common in the COVID-era, partly through virtual sessions, is vital in enabling the MTA Institute to remain at the forefront of industry-leading, innovative, automotive training. “Trainer meetings are great for team spirit, bonding, cementing the culture of the Institute and are a great learning

experience for everyone, especially the newer trainers,” said Scott Gehrke, MTA Institute Operations Manager. “The conference also brings the trainers, management, and the administration team together, and enables the trainers to not only catch up and discuss training ideas, network, and have a laugh - which is important – but take part in important professional development sessions, including sessions led by experienced trainers to help assist them peers with aspects of teaching, planning, problem solving, administration, and training qualification compliance. “As for the changes in the industry, we know that the areas of electric vehicles (EVs) and battery technology are moving quickly. The MTA Institute recognises this and we now offer more battery electric vehicle and hybrid courses than ever before and have even introduced a training day for apprentices. So, the Tesla and Century Yuasa Batteries virtual meetings were important as they shared their view of the future of the industry in these areas.” February 2022 Motor Trader | 91


TRAINER OF THE YEAR 2021 A highlight of the annual conference is the announcement of the Trainer of the Year award recipient, and this year the award was presented to Technical Trainer Don Lerm, who delivers automotive training across many sectors - except heavy and small engine - to around 55 apprentices and trainees across the Sunshine Coast from Landsborough to Cooroy and the hinterland. Having started his own apprenticeship in 1970 in Victoria and done stints as a mechanic, foreman and manager at three major dealerships in Victoria and Queensland, Don has an immense amount of experience. However, becoming a trainer was something he realised he wanted to do relatively early in his career, and when the chance presented itself, he joined MTA Institute more than 16 years ago. He was, he said, very pleased to have been chosen as Trainer of the Year. “It was a huge surprise as I know all the trainers work hard, but I feel proud to be picked as Trainer of the Year and proud also of the job that we do,” he said. That job, of course, involves training students one-on-one at the place of their employment. It’s a stye of training that the MTA Institute has pioneered, one for AS WELL AS Trainer of the Year, other awards for MTA Queensland staff were presented over the course of the trainers’ conference. Kerry Cook, Quality Manager for MTA Queensland was presented with the Contributor Award; Matthew Ivers, Marketing and Communications Coordinator, received the Service Excellence Award; and Christie Flew, from the Association’s administration staff, received the Commendation Certificate for her contribution during the year. Shane Palmer, who delivers apprenticeship training in North Queensland, also received a Commendation Certificate for his outstanding work in 2021. 92 | Motor Trader February 2022

That, said Don, was important as the industry continues to change and embrace new technologies, as is having a real passion for, and thorough understanding of your work. “The industry is going through huge change and working in the motor trades is not just a job - both employee and apprentice have to be the best at what they do,” said Don. “Apprentices have to be able to look outside the box and, as I tell my students for example, not just throw away a part, but be able to pull it apart and find why it did not work. Things are changing every day and training has never been more important.” Don is, said Scott Gehrke, a muchrespected trainer and colleague, delivering

exceptional XXXX service to his students and their employers. “Don has consistently shown how passionate he is about apprentice training and assessment,” he said. “He Don Lerm, Trainer of the Year 2021 wants the best for his students, and employers want him to deliver that training. And the proof of his ability is in that Don was nominated for this award back in 2015 as well. He is meticulous in what he does, from a training perspective to administration and compliance.”

THE YEAR AHEAD 2021 was a challenging but successful year for the MTA Institute and MTA Queensland, with very solid growth in apprentice student numbers, the development and launch of new courses and programs, as well as the introduction of new AUR qualification standards. As Queensland, and the nation, grapples with the Omicron COVID-19 outbreak, such forward planning will prove to be invaluable. “While there was some emphasis on offering virtual training sessions during 2021, it was an option last year that we rarely had to use,” said Scott. “While the Omicron outbreak may prove to be a challenge, we will ensure we continue to offer a professional service to apprentices and the workshops employing them. This may require more of a focus on using virtual means, but whatever happens, the service we deliver will be of the highest quality and the safety of our staff, students and their employers will be paramount. “The MTA Institute is always looking to support the automotive industry with training courses that reflect the industry’s changing nature and we do so, for example, through courses that cover ADAS, HEV and EV technology. We will continue that work and ensure that the Institute remains a provider of worldleading automotive training.”

HIS IS MERCEDES-BENZ’ new all-electric concept vehicle, the Vision EQXX. In an age in which vehicles are becoming a little more daring in their design, the EQXX, while a concept, looks like something we might actually see on the road. If it does make it there, it will bring with it a suite of state-of-the-art tech that, amongst other things, gives it some wickedly good range – a metric on the minds of manufacturers and consumers everywhere. Mercedes has done its homework here, it seems, with the company claiming a range of more than 1000km on a single charge. 100kWh of energy is on tap from the battery pack and Mercedes says energy consumption is at a just 10kWh per 100km. The battery is the star here - all that energy being is stored in a pack that has 50 per cent less volume, and is 30 per cent lighter, than that used in the Mercedes EQS full-size luxury EV. This

MERCEDES HAS DONE ITS HOMEWORK HERE, IT SEEMS, WITH THE COMPANY CLAIMING A RANGE OF MORE THAN 1000KM ON A SINGLE CHARGE. is thanks to some clever engineering and chemistry, and some innovative thinking that has come via Mercedes’ involvement in Formula One. With a 900V electrical system, the potential for seriously fast charging times is there. For that little bit of extra help with range, there are ultra-thin solar roof panels that feed the battery up to 25km of extra legs, while the 150kW output electric drive system, Mercedes says, achieves benchmark efficiency of 95 per cent from battery to wheels. Finally, the efficiency of the electric


drive unit means it generates only minimal waste heat. This means the thermal management system extremely small and lightweight. The system of aero-shutters, coolant valves and water pumps also includes a cooling plate installed in the vehicle floor, enabling it to take advantage of the air flowing along the underside of the Vision EQXX.

This is, Mercedes says, the most aerodynamically efficient way of keeping the electric drive unit cool, and aerodynamics is central to the vehicle’s design. The car looks sleek and slippery, which is confirmed by a drag-coefficient of 0.17, and thanks to some more clever thinking regarding construction – which includes components inspired by natural forms February 2022 Motor Trader | 97


and the use of 3D printed parts to reduce weight – the car comes in at 1750kg. Ultra-low-rolling-resistance tyres and lightweight magnesium wheels are fitted to squeeze out those extra kms of range. As you’d expect, the interior of the Vision EQXX is pretty stunning. It is fairly simple in layout but is dominated by a 47.5-inch, 8k resolution display that stretches from one A-pillar to the other. That display is so good that a realtime 3D navigation system is available, complete with zoom and scroll functions from satellite view down to a height of 10 metres in a 3D city representation. More detailed information is available too, with a series of screens able to deliver information by visuals and infographics. Information includes the real-time influence of current acceleration, gradient, wind and rolling resistance on energy consumption. An upgraded “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant is on hand to help out the driver and as well as providing navigation, system can mine for data based on the car’s route, with an avatar available to function as an ‘intelligent tour guide’. As is popular these days with new vehicles – and particularly concept vehicles – trim materials on the interior are of the sustainable variety. 98 | Motor Trader February 2022

Materials include Mylo, a vegan leather alternative; an animal-free leather alternative called Deserttex made from a sustainable cactus-based biomaterial; and bamboo fibre, amongst others. Recycled waste materials, such as the PET bottles, are also used. All-in-all, the Vision EQXX is a really exciting concept – one that, at the very least, does seem to show that the future of EVs is one where they will easily match the range available from a internal combustion engine vehicle. As for the infrastructure to recharge them? Well, that might still be an issue, but it’s a hurdle that can definitely be conquered.


LAWS PROTECTING AGAINST HARASSMENT RECENT MEDIA STORIES about what may be happening in some parliamentarian’s offices is a reminder to all employers and business owners that no-one is immune from a sexual harassment claim. The Fair Work Act and Regulations will soon be amended to give employers more power to sack perpetrators of sexual harassment. The Federal Government has announced it will amend section 387 of the Act to clarify that sexual harassment can be a valid reason for termination when determining whether a dismissal was unfair. It will also amend the definition of “serious misconduct” in the Fair Work Regulations to include sexual harassment, to clarify that this behaviour can justify summary dismissal. In addition, education and guidance on unfair dismissal and other workplace rights will be updated. The Act will include a ‘stop sexual harassment order’ by clarifying that a stop-bullying order is available in the context of harassment.
