Founded in 1940, Finca Reboreda, which produces the A Telleira wines, is the largest private wine firm in D.O. Ribeiro and is credited with being the original locomotive for quality in the area. José Luis Méndez and his daughter Ana head one of the most progressive and stable wine firms in Galicia. Since 1996, The Méndez family has also owned the Albariño super-estate Adegas Morgadío. The A. Telleira vineyard is made up of 40 hectares on the Miño River west of the provincial capital and ancient Roman mining center of Orense. Soils vary from alluvial and stony near the river to outcroppings of slate, granite and chalk on the higher west-facing slopes. CA’ DEI ZAGO

Ca’ dei Zago’s current-generation winemaker Christian Zago is often referred to as the face of the “new wave” of Prosecco di Valdobbiadene growers and producers. But his approach to viticulture and his winemaking style actually harken back to a century ago, long before anyone could imagine that Prosecco would one day become a worldwide phenomenon and the best-selling sparkling wine in history.

Founded in the 1920s, the Ca’ dei Zago family farm and estate stretches over just six hectares planted to vine, including some of the Prosecco di Valdobbiadene appellation’s most coveted growing sites. Many of the vines on the estate are more than 40 years old and most are planted on impossibly steep hillsides where all vineyard management must be done by hand. The farming practices are rigorously — religiously, some would say — biodynamic. Demeter-approved preparations are used throughout the vegetative cycle and harvesting, winemaking, and bottling are carried out in strict accordance with the lunar calendar (as per the teachings of early 20th-century biodynamic pioneer Rudolf Steiner).

Although Christian is renowned for his production of Prosecco Colfondo (or col fondo, meaning literally with sediment), bottle-fermented and leesaged Prosecco, he has more recently begun producing classic method Prosecco. www.ethicawines.com

DOMAINE DE MONTCY

The Chevrier family is the guarantor of the quality and authenticity of the wines from the Loire estate in Cheverny. Brothers Valérie, Vincent, Thierry and Vincent carry on this legacy. The family recently added noted enologist and vitculturalist Vincent Bonnal, who brings his vineyard and cellar expertise to the domaine along with his acumen with natural wines.

Formed in the 1990s from vineyards that belonged to Château de Troussay, Domaine de Montcy now has about thirty hectares spread over four main plots in the communes of Cheverny, Cormeray, Chitenay and Celettes.

Included in full in the Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny AOC, the estate’s grape varieties are balanced in red (Pinot Noir, Gamay, Malbec) and white (Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Romorantin), with a heritage of old Sauvignon vines planted on the famous “Clos des Cendres”. The estate has been certified organic since 2012 and biodynamic (Demeter) since 2015. Domaine de Montcy’s goal is to work with respect for the living and to put their expertise at the service of nature to produce healthy and natural wines. VALLEIN TERCINIER COGNAC

For the family that has produced Cognacs in Chermignac for five generations, there is one guiding principle: follow the family tradition of care and obsession with flavor that goes into each bottle, not the fashion of the moment. Based in the Premier Cru village of Jouy-les-Reims in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, the Cossy family has been growing grapes in Champagne since 1764. It was only in the 1950s that owner/winemaker Sophie Cossy’s grandparents began producing wine and bottling it under the family name.

Sophie assumed winemaking responsibilities at age 26 when her father, Francis, passed away suddenly. After conducting countless experiments with fermentation vessels, blends, time on lees, dosage, and corking, Sophie has gradually revamped and revitalized the Cossy range, bringing a decidedly feminine touch to the wines.

Embracing a philosophy of sustainable farming and respect for terroir, Sophie has also progressively transformed her domaine’s viticultural practices over the past decade and a half, continuously adopting more and more environmentally friendly farming methods. She does not use any herbicides or pesticides and employs many organic and biodynamic practices. The vineyards are plowed by horses and grass is grown between the vine rows. Hedges and trees have been planted around the vineyards, favoring biodiversity and balance in nature.

Today Sophie oversees 7 hectares of vineyards spread over 34 different plots. Her vineyards extend from Jouy-lès-Reims to Arcis-le-Ponsart, passing by Pargny-lès-Reims, Ville-Dommange, Courmas, Bouilly and Serzy-et-Prin. The Cossy vineyards are planted to 53% Pinot Meunier, 32% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay.

DOMAINE DE BELLENE

Domaine de Bellene was founded in 2005 by Nicolas Potel after the purchase of various old vines in Beaune. The winery was created with a desire to control the entire production process, from the soil cultivation to the wine sales. With over 20 years of experience working with some of the most treasured vineyard plots in Burgundy Today, Domaine de Bellene cultivates the entire 25-ha-estate following sustainable farming practices. The aim is to yield very healthy grapes of the highest quality, while cultivating our old vines (50 to 110 years old) with respect given to the soil. In the cellar the wines are made in a minimalistic format, with little to no intervention; adding almost winemaking additives; no acid, no cultured yeast, nutrients, enzymes, sugar. DOMAINE DUSEIGNEUR

Domaine Duseigneur was founded by Jean Duseigneur in 1967. He was succeeded by his sons Frederic and more recently Bernard, who took over the estate in 2002. In 2007 famed French sommelier Philippe Faure-Brac became a partner. In 2013, Bernard Duseigneur purchased 12 hectares of vineyards from Domaine Monpertuis in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The Duseigneur wines are now made in the former cellars of Monpertuis. The vineyards, spanning 28 hectares – 9 in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and the rest in Lirac and Cotes du Rhone-Villages Laudun – have been farmed organically since early on and are certified biodynamic since 2007. The average age of vines is 50-60 years with some up to 135 years. Yields are small and production is limited. Harvesting is by hand, fermentation is carried out with natural yeasts.

OBSIDIAN WINE CO.

Obsidian Wine Co. was established by brothers Arpad and Peter Molnar and winemaker Michael Terrien after the trio discovered an abandoned walnut orchard on the volcanic slopes of the high Mayacamas Mountains of Lake County, CA. They suspected the location, half a mile above sea level, would be an ideal site to grow mountain fruit. In 1999, they planted the vineyards in red volcanic soils shot with black obsidian, overlooking a dormant volcano. The first 98 cases of Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon were vinified in 2002, and today the Red Hills of Lake County are proving to be the next great frontier in Cabernet Sauvignon. Raked by Pacific winds, blinded by mountain light, and subject to cold, rocky conditions, Obsidian Ridge grapes develop thick skins, dark color, intense flavors and a tannic structure that is uniquely expressive of their harsh environment, while maintaining vibrant acidity.

The Molnar family planted the Poseidon Vineyard in 1973, on what had been grazing land since the time of the missionaries. They were among the first to farm the southern extreme of Napa Carneros, which at the time was considered too cool to ripen wine grapes. Pacific wind brings fog and cooler temperatures to balance the intensity of the California sun, while clay and gravel soil provide ideal drainage for the vines. After selling the fruit to other wineries for many years, the Molnar brothers decided to replant the vineyard their father had established and begin producing their own Poseidon wines. The first Poseidon Vineyard Pinot Noir was vinified in 1995, followed by Chardonnay in 2003.

The Molnars also own Kádár Hungary, a cooperage located in the renowned Tokaj region, one of a handful of places in the world where the prized tight-grained oak species Quercus Petraea is grown.
