Birth of the Boston Strong boy:: Born in Roxbury, MA in October of 1858, John L. Sullivan was raised by his first-generation Irish immigrant parents. Of poor means, John’s parents shaped who he would eventually become as a man. His mother carried a solid physique, at 5’10” and 190 pounds, while his father imparted his aggressive scrappiness to John.

4

EARLY LIFE As a child, John L. Sullivan was not scared to use physical force. In fact, he went out of his way to engage in fisticuffs with other children and even boys his senior.

5

EARLY LIFE As a teenager, legend states he would enter Boston’s toughest barrooms and proclaim

“ i could lick any man in the house! ” And when he was taken up on this offer, his fists backed it up. It was this unofficial training that paved the way for his illustrious career as a professional boxer.

6

THE man MAN the John L. Sullivan played semi-professional baseball in the Boston area before being

drafted by the Cincinnatti Red Stockings, who offered him a full pro contract.

What did he do? Declined, of course.

Fighting was his true calling, and so began his quest to conquer the boxing world.

9

SULLIVAN sullivan

On

July 8, 1889,

John L. Sullivan fought his last bare-knuckle match against Jake Kilrain in a makeshift ring on a farm in Richburg, Mississippi.

vs

KILRAIN

The famed fight is said to have gone a whopping 76 rounds, with Sullivan coming out on top in the end. On this day, Sullivan became the lastever Heavyweight Bare-Knuckle Boxing Champion of the World. 11

Similar to his boxing persona, John L. Sullivan was larger than life outside of the ring. A regular in pubs across the country, he enjoyed his whiskey the same way that he enjoyed his women, gambling, and other vices - in excess.

12

Death Years of the sporting man lifestyle finally caught up to John L. Sullivan in 1918 when he died at the age of 59. Sullivan is buried in the Old Calvary Cemetery in the Roslindale neighborhood of Boston. Even after becoming the 1st athlete in American history to earn one million dollars, he died with barely $10 to his name.

13

Legacy John L. Sullivan was inducted into the inaugural class of the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. While his exact fighting history is often

disputed, he officially held a record of 40-1-2, with 24 knockouts.

14

Legacy The Bare-Knuckle Boxing Hall of

Fame was created in the barn where Sullivan trained in the small town of Belfast, New York.
