Show appreciation for veterans SHARE THEIR STORIES

S

ome veterans return home from war and still have a difficult battle to face, recovery from brain injuries, the loss of a limb and post-traumatic stress disorder make returning to daily life as a civilian an uphill battle.

Regardless of their experience in the military, whether serving in a combat area or doing logistics in the States, Veterans Day offers non-military people a chance to thank anyone who served in any capacity in the military.

There are many ways students can help out:

GIVE A RIDE

Disabled American Veterans provides free transportation to people who need assistance traveling to a Veteran Affairs medical facility. Volunteers transport people to and from the center.

Some people also go as far as donating a car to a veteran in need. Sandra Bonds donated a 2012 Toyota Camry to Jason Higgins this past August to help him fulfill his dream of traveling across the country. “I met Jason at the VA center almost six years ago,” said Bonds. “All he talked about was how he wanted to buy a car so he could travel around the country and see what state had the prettiest sunrise and sunset,” said Bonds, “I knew I had to do something to fulfill his wish.”

DONATE FREQUENT FLYER MILES

The Fisher House Foundation provides homes all over the country available to family members of veterans so they can be closer during the hospitalization process. They operate the Hero Mile Program, a program that helps donate frequent flyer miles to family members who need help getting closer to their loved ones.

HELP BUILD THEM A HOME

Aside from needing medical attention, injured veterans often need a home that better suits their disabilities. Homes for our Troops, an organization that helps build modified homes at no cost to the veterans, and helps veterans live more independently with their disabilities.

Everyone has a story to share. Veterans’ stories haven’t had the chance to be told yet, but the Library of Congress has started the Veteran History Project, a collection of veteran’s tale from the war.

Jake Ashburn, accounting junior, shows his appreciation by volunteering at the local VA center every year on Veterans Day. “My grandfather spent a lot of time in centers like this when I was growing up,” said Ashburn. “When I come here and listen to all the stories these people have to share, I can’t help but feel proud and get the urge to tell everyone,” said Ashburn.

SAY THANK YOU

Simply say ‘thank you’ to veterans both casually dressed and dressed in uniform.

OFFER FREE MEALS

Six restaurants in Wichita Falls offer free meals to veterans on Veteran’s day: Chili’s, Applebee’s, Cotton Patch, Denny’s, Golden Corral and On the Border. Each location has a select menu for veterans and active military to choose from, free of charge.

“This year is our 15th Annual Golden Corral Military Appreciation Veteran’s Day meal,” said Drew Cormode, assistant manager at Golden Corral in Wichita Falls. “We want to show our thanks to all veterans by offering them a free meal, as well as 10 percent off for friends or family,” said Cormode.

With hundreds of thousands of veterans in the United States, it’s important to take time to thank them for their services, becoming their efforts, the United States wouldn’t be the country it is today.

Take care of yourself

etween flu season, final exams, managing a schedule and a job, it’s easy for us college students to lose track of what’s most important. Taking care of ourselves.

The fall semester can take a serious toll on our health, what with the lack of a fall break and high stress levels common for college students. Being overworked can make us more susceptible to illness, both physical and mental.

However, there are things we can do to take care of ourselves, and this should be a top priority. You can’t pass your final or go to work if you have the flu or haven’t slept in days.

What would your mom tell you to do? Get a good night’s sleep. Take your vitamins.

That being said, if for some reason you do get sick, please do not come to class or work. Those kids who have snot dripping from their noses, smelling like cough syrup and sneezing through class – yes, we know you are trying to power through and get perfect attendance or more work hours.

That’s very noble, but for everyone’s sake, stay at home.

You’re getting everyone else sick and not doing yourself any favors.

Stress is one of the most common ailments for college students, but many people may not know that it can be a cause of students getting sick.

We stress ourselves out to the point where we don’t get enough sleep or take pills to stay up to finish that one project we waited too long to start.

If you are feeling overly stressed, there are resources on campus to help you.

Go to the counseling center.

Talk to your professors. Most of them do care about your health and will be understanding, but they won’t if you never tell them what’s going on.

Take care of yourself the way your parents did when you were little, and know your limits.

It’s not all in your head

I

’ve had depression since I was in middle school, so I’ve become almost a professional at dealing with the waves of emotion it brings (kind of morbid, I know). But this semester, it got to the point where I didn’t know how to handle it by myself anymore Kara - I wasn’t eating regularly, I was McIntyre staying up until four or five in the morning on a consistent basis, and I wasn’t interested in anything that had previously brought me joy. It was so bad that even my friends started to notice.

That’s when I decided it was time to do something I absolutely hate: ask for help.

I went into the Counseling Center to ask a question for an article I was writing, and as I was leaving, I turned around and said, “Actually, can I make an appointment for myself?”

I was surprised at my impulsiveness, but it needed to be done. After my first meeting, my counselor and I decided it would be best for me to continue to come back once a week, and it has actually helped a hell of a lot more than I thought it would. But I also discovered something else “wrong” with me: I have anxiety disorder.

This really didn’t come as a shock to me. In fact, it was a relief because it put a label on some of the feelings I could never pinpoint. After about two months of weekly meetings with my counselor and a few small lifestyle changes, I decided to make one big change and ask for medication for my depression and anxiety.

This past Monday, I asked my counselor about it, and she told me that the psychiatrist provided

by MSU wouldn’t be back to see new patients until next semester because they “cannot afford to pay him for more than 12 hours per semester, and he

has already reached his limit.”

I can go to another doctor somewhere in town and start the process of getting medication, but I am not from here. My family doctor is back home in Southlake, and I’m not going to drive two hours home for that. If I were to attempt to see a doctor here in Wichita Falls, I would still have to establish a history with them first. By the time I would actually be able to get the medication, it would be next semester anyway because of Thanksgiving break and winter break.

So what would be my quickest and easiest option [the MSU psychiatrist, Dr. Ron Hall] is now out of reach, because MSU can’t afford to pay him to come back for more than 12 hours.

And I was not the only one waiting in line.

There were two other students in the Counseling Center asking to see the psychiatrist as well, and they couldn’t get an appointment either.

From my experience, mental illness has never been taken seriously. I recall my own mother laughing at me the first time I told her I had depression, because as she said, “Depression isn’t a real thing. It’s all in your head.” It’s 2015 - this stigma needs to end, and needs to end now.

I can wait until next semester for medication (not that I really have a choice), but for students who may have more severe cases, this is unacceptable. It takes courage to talk about mental illness, and students should not have to hear that they must wait two months for help. That can make or break their decision to actually try and get better.

The solutions to this problem are pretty simple: MSU can find a less expensive psychiatrist, or increase the budget for health services. We need real solutions for real problems.

It’s not all in our heads.

Even as students worry about exams, relationships and job prospects building a positive social media shadow can be integral to success. Social media coordinators across a wide range of professions, including Career Builder, found that 51 percent of employers said they turned away applicants after seeing content on social media.

A.J. Lopez III, social media coordinator, said, “Users should commit at least an hour a day to building a positive image on social media. If five to six hours a day on average is normal then you might as well be making it work for you.”

Employers want to see that their future employee uses good communication skills that will fit the company culture.

Give focus to making a positive reflection on every platform. More positive exposure means more potential networking opportunities.

Careisha Whyte, accounting senior, said, “I have Googled myself and I didn’t see anything that I wouldn’t want to see if I were my employer. I am very aware, though, to what I’m posting. My mother brought us up that way.” Whyte said she has used Facebook today and doesn’t usually go a day without it.

DO CLEAN UP

Deactivate some old unused accounts.

This may also mean asking friends to delete shared posts that could be harmful.

DO BE INFORMED

Make sure any hot topic issues like political statements are well articulated and backed up with sound information.

DO INCLUDE MEDIA ON YOUR RESUME

Include your social media links or blog sites on a resume. Show your familiarity with HTML and give HR a better idea of your personal identity.

DO FOLLOW PROFESSIONALS

Create a brand by following relevant people in your specific industry.

Private matters can be messy and cloud employer’s judgment. Drama is not professional.

Even after posts are deleted, this information could have already been seen by potential networkers or captured by a screen shot.

What you post online is forever, so assume every potential employer will see what you’re posting before you click send.

DON’T SELF-INCRIMINATE

Get rid of any photos or posts that involve drugs, alcohol or sexual content. Travis Boumann, accounting sophomore, said, “Yeah, I have photos I wouldn’t want professionals to see like pictures of drinking or partying but nothing too crazy. I am pretty aware of what I post.”

DON’T USE PROFANITY

Use language that better describes the job candidate you want to be. If you can’t say it at work, don’t say it online. This includes sharing a meme that could be considered hateful or insensitive about certain topics.

DON’T POST WITHOUT THINKING FIRST

Words can’t be unsaid and, once on the net, they can be proven. Impressions mean a lot and can mean losing a dream job.

The colors that are associated with life and joy. But in Mexican tradtition, they are colors used to celebrate the dead. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated every year on the first and second of November. It is a day made to celebrate, instead of mourn, the lives of passed loved ones. Three students took charge in making the event of celebration achievable on campus to bring awareness and well, joy.

“It’s a tradition in Mexico and other Latin countries every year where people gather and celebrate the spirits of their loved ones with food music, and toys, flowers. We had a presentation about Dia de los Muertos, followed by a baile folklorico, which are traditional dances in Mexico,” Yesenia Alvarez, early childhood education, said.

Alvarez helped make the event a possibility.

The celebration took place in Clark Student Center Nov. 2. Her and her team donated everything that was needed for the event.

“Bilingual Education Student Organization was in charge and Zavala International Dance group participated as well as UPB with face painting,” Alvarez said. “Me, Brenda Sigala, and Ana Aguilar are the officers for the organization. And other members of the group put their part in to organize the event.”

The event was free for the some 100 who attended.

“Friends and family, as well as students that live on campus went. The turn out was great. We didn’t expect as much people compared to last year, but we had many people show up,” Alvarez said.

Brenda Sigala, bilingual education junior, has been a part of BESO for two years now. She joined BESO because of the involvement it has with the hispanic community and it represents bilingual education.

“It was all donated by BESO students, local business, and Zavala Hispanic Culture initiative,” Sigala said.

Traditional Mexican food made from scratch was given out to celebrate the day for anyone.

“We had pan dulce, enchiladas, rice, and beans as traditional Mexican dinner. Everything was gone real quick since we had lots of people,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez said there was face painting of catrina, a popular way of decorating the face in honor of the celebrated life of those loved ones they’ve lost.

“Traditionally, they make altars and decorate them with flowers food photos of their loved ones,” Alvarez said.

Also playing a part in making this event possible was executive officer for BESO, Ana Aguilar, bilingual education sophomore.

“We set up the altar last week, with pictures, flowers, calaveras, which are skeletons, along with other decorations,” Aguilar said. “It was held by BESO. This year I helped by serving food made

by Yesenia Zavala’s mom and we also handed out bread donated by Los Cuates. We also presented a PowerPoint of what los Dia de los Muertos was.”

There was dancing by Zavala International Dance, with 20 dancers in bright colors bringing the festivities to life, a highlight of the event.

“We had an amazing crowd all in honor to celebrate our beloved ones who have passed away. As well as celebrating a Mexican tradition embedded in our roots,” Aguilar said.

Sigala also donated her time for this free event.

Her husband, co-owner of Los Cuates, donated the bread.

“I was all over the place. I helped decorate and set up the altar, and the atrium. I was part in donating the pan de muerto y pan dulce. And during the event I was helping serve food,” Sigala said.

The students served around 100 to 120 plates of enchiladas, including roughly 50 non-Hispanics.

“The purpose of the event was to bring the community together to celebrate this awesome tradition,” Sigala said.

Sigala said it was a way to put the Hispanic tradition out there and so people can understand the cultural aspect of it.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE THANKSGIVING BREAK?

Madison Salvatore, marketing sophomore, said she plans to go back home to the Austin area over the break where she will spend time with her family and friends.

“I’ll also eat lots of food and go shopping for Black Friday deals,” Salvatore said.

Jamie Hancock, psychology senior, said she will be spending extra time doing her internship at the state hospital.

She will also be working, but will spend Thanksgiving Day with family.

Carson Kruder, education junior, will go home to the Plano area for the break.

WHAT TRADITIONS DO YOU PARTICPATE IN?

Salvatore said she usually watches the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in the morning and helps her mom with the cooking for the remainder of the day.

Other traditions in the Salvatore house include pumpkin pie and football, since the Cowboys and Longhorns play.

Kruder said for the last eight years, her family has gone out to eat at family style restaurants like Maggianos, where a big Thanksgiving dinner is served.

“We thought it was different than your average at-home-cooked Thanksgiving that everyone usually does,” Kruder said.

“The only real tradition we have is that I always get a chocolate pie to myself,” Hancock said.

She said this is the only pie she will eat, so one year her grandma felt bad and made her one for herself.

“Even after she passed away, they’ve still kept it going,” Hancock said.

WHO DO YOU SPEND THANKSGIVING WITH?

Salvatore said it is usually just her, a close family friend, and her parents since she is an only child. Her grandma is coming to visit this year.

Hancock said since she and her boyfriend have been together for five years, they usually split the holiday between their two families.

Kruder said she spends Thanksgiving with her family every year.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THANKSGIVING MEMORY?

Hancock said she loves the pie memory, but her other favorite is one year when her dad attempted to fry a turkey and was unsuccessful.

“We didn’t have a turkey that year.

We used ham for backup,” Hancock said.

Kruder’s favorite was when she was in fifth grade and had just gotten her dog Penny, she said.

“She lost her first tooth on my sock because she wouldn’t stop biting my feet out of frustration,” Kruder said.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THANKSGIVING FOOD?

Salvatore’s favorite food on Thanksgiving is definitely pumpkin pie, she said.

“It’s a really close tie between chocolate pie and deviled eggs,” Hancock said.

She said she doesn’t like other Thanksgiving foods, so these get her through.

WHY DO YOU THINK WE CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING?

Salvatore said she thinks the historical part of the holiday relates to the American Indians and Squanto.

“Now I think it’s a time for families to spend quality time together and just appreciate things happening in their lives,” Salvatore said.

“I celebrate Thanksgiving as a remembrance of everything my family has been able to provide for me and to show my gratitude to them,” Hancock said.

Kruder said she thinks we celebrate this holiday to take a step back from our everyday lives and count our blessings.

WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?

“I am thankful for my supportive and loving parents and all the opportunities they have given me and my good friends and all of our memories. I am also thankful for Drake, Ed Sheeran, Netflix, and coffee,” Salvatore said.

“I’m really thankful for the opportunities I’ve been given. I haven’t had everything given to me, but I haven’t had a hard life,” Hancock said.

“I am by far most thankful for my family because of how loving and supportive they are, as well as all of my friends who help keep me sane when I am away from my family,” Kruder said.

Sick at school Dealing with illness on college campus presents challenges HANNAH DEAN REPORTER

B

eing sick in college is not the most convenient experience. There are limited people to turn to and responsibilities and obligations continue to pile up despite the germs and bacteria circulating.

Getting sick at college is a lot different than getting sick at home where mom is around to make soup or run to the store for Sprite. Having friends and neighbors around to check in or help can come in handy during flu season or if there is any other virus or bug going around.

Nicole Buchanan, a sophomore in education, said, “My residents are the best. They came together to check on me throughout the days I was in bed sick and brought me crackers and medicine and drinks. They also helped when it came to missing certain classes or talking to professors.”

Not getting enough sleep and not staying hydrated can also cause a student to become sick. Missing class to get in extra rest can help. Taking a break and giving the body a chance to recover is a way to quicken chances of getting well.

ing in bed. Normally I try and keep on keepin’ on, but I knew my body was telling me to slow down. I mean, it’s not like I could skip every class I didn’t feel like going to just because I wasn’t feeling so hot, this is college, you just have to try and not pass on your sickness to everyone you come in contact with while still trying to

stay on top of the school work. College is hard enough without being sick.”

Although passing germs on cannot always be prevented, there are precautions that can be taken. Not washing dishes where you brush your teeth because the norovirus can hang around for quite a while can prevent becoming ill.

“I drink Gatorade, eat crackers, stay in bed, and eat the chicken broth kind of soup.”

“When I get sick here I usually just lay in bed and then I call my mom and tell her i’m sick.”

“When I was little I would get a Sprite and soup and that would make me feel better.”

Hand washing is a major factor in staying healthy, students are more likely to get sick if they do not wash their hands regularly.

Denaijah Shaw, athletic training freshman, said “WASH YOUR HANDS. As if germs in general aren’t gross enough, bacteria and germs are everywhere, and it just gets worse if you’re not washing your hands.”

Buchanan said “It’s a good thing my friends were prepared for getting sick, I am so glad they were able to come through and help me.”

Keeping vitamins, cold and cough medicine, Kleenex, and soup on hand is another way to take precaution against the bacteria and viruses in the air.

Shaw said “Even though I’ve only had allergies, knock on wood, at least five of the girls on my side of the hall have gotten sick. Moms have sent care packages and that’s pretty much how of some of them will make it through their sickness, because moms are essential when you’re sick, so it’s nice to know we have our friends to help when our parents are far away.”

“[When I get sick here] I take zycam and get vitamin C in my system.”

t’s back. Texas’ southern treat – Blue Bell – arrived in North Texas on Nov. 2, for the first time since distributors removed it from the shelves due to a bacterial contamination last April.

Aleesha Taylor, customer service at Walmart said, “It was crazy. Once we received the inventory at 4 a.m. and we released it at 6 a.m., there was a huge line of about 45 people. After the day ended, we sold up to 500 half-gallons.”

Tom Thumb in Fort Worth, however, put out a sign on their freezer door, allowing customer a chance to only purchase two at a time to give other customers a shot to get their ice cream.

Kendal Brinlee, psychology sophomore, said, “It was amazing, I had to wait in line for half-an-hour, but it was worth it. I swear, it felt like the new Jordans were getting released.”

At this time, Blue Bell has released half gallons and pints in five different flavors. They are Homemade Vanilla, Dutch Chocolate, Cookies ‘n Cream, the Great Divide and Butter Pecan.

Courtney Gilder, mass communication junior, said, “I actually had some of the ice cream that got recalled, but I’m ok and I will go back and get me some more of that ice cream in a heartbeat.”

According to the CDC, in early April, Blue Bell had to recall more than 8 million gallons of ice cream due to the outbreak of listeriosis,

and Blue Bell lost approximately $96 million.

Listeriosis is a life-threatening infection caused by eating food contaminated with bacterium.

Ten people were reported from four states: Arizona, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. All were hospitalized. Three of the deaths were reported from Kansas.

Niko Padilla, finance junior, said, “Blue Bell isn’t the first company to deal with a recall. At least they caught the problem and now we have it back. Blue Bell represents Texas to me.”

Right now, Blue Bell is producing ice cream at facilities in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Sylacauga, Alabama. They hope to begin making ice cream in their home facility in Brenham, Texas at the end of the year.

Jenny Van Dorf, director of media relations for Blue Bell, said, “To ensure that this doesn’t happen again, we have upgraded our procedures and employee training and have adopted the same overall philosophy at all of our facilities.”

Dillard was animated on the subject, however his hatred for the smart balance wheel doesn’t negate the advantageous points of owning one: 1. The smart balance wheel travels up to 6 mph, twice as fast as the average human walks.

2. The smart balance wheel only weighs 22 pounds, so it is easy to pick up and carry up staircases and over humps.

3. The humans walking will be 4 inches shorter, thus giving the smart balance rider a sense of superiority.

fter finishing the season 8-7-3 and getting swept in the LSC playoffs by losing the last three games in a row. The women’s soccer team ended their season on a sad note with the 0-1 loss to West Texas A&M. Head Coach Damien Clark said, “The season didn’t go that great for us. We’re disappointed. We don’t think that losing is in our DNA. I think in the end, we were disappointed in the way the season ended.

Clarke is in his second season as the women’s head soccer coach.

Destinee Williamson, criminal justice sophomore and starting forward said, “I think he is doing a great job, considering this is his second year and he took us to the playoffs.”

The soccer team started their season strong after winning six of their ten games, tying two of them. Losing 2-0 to Angelo State, who was the #5 team in the nation, might have been what unraveled their season.

“The loss to Angelo State was a big blow to the team. We felt that we were much better than the score reflected in that game. It definitely hurt our confidence. I don’t think that we really ever got over the loss.

During the middle of the season, injuries started to hamper the ladies.

“We had a great start to the season, but I think that the injuries were the thing that held us back and trying to come back from those injuries.” Said Williamson.

This season, the ladies handled the game tempo well and averaged over 20 shots per game.

“In most games, we had possession of the ball more than our opponent did. I think that played well for us. The first 12 games we were keeping it higher up the field, than we did last year. We also took a hundred more shots than we did last year as well.” Said Clarke Williamson said, this just makes us even more hungrier for next year. We found our weaknesses and we are going to strike at it this offseason to get even better.

T

he Mustangs’ football team wins its first playoff game of the season, 26-21 against Eastern New Mexico, on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015.

Before the game, Coach Bill Maskill said his main concern was beating Eastern New Mexico’s wishbone offense.

“We don’t see this offense that much. Nearly every team we’ve played this season has run a single-back formation. We have to work hard this week to keep our defense disciplined,” Maskill said.

Daniel Laudermilk, a senior in history, and the team’s starting middle linebacker, agreed with Maskill about that concern.

“Coach makes us spend multiple hours to prepare for this offense. We practice against this offense every week just to prepare for this game,” Laudermilk said.

The second concern was beating Eastern New Mexico a second time. Laudermilk said it is always hard to beat a team a second time, but especially them since it is a unique offense.

Their concerns turned into struggles during the game. Eastern New Mexico’s offense helped the team rack up 294 rushing yards, and 358 total yards for a total of three touchdowns. Kamal Cass, Eastern New Mexico’s tailback, was a big part of that success, as he ran 197 yards and all of the team’s touchdowns.

For the majority of the game, Eastern New Mexico led by at least

two points. However, the Mustangs were able to fight their way back in the fourth quarter. Don Jerry, psychology sophmore, and the team’s tailback, ran in for two touchdowns late in the game to put the team in the lead, 26-21. Eastern New Mexico stalled on their last drive with four incompletions by their quarterback, Jeremy Buurma. Midwestern got the ball with nine seconds left, ran for a loss of two yards, and killed the clock for a 26-21 playoff victory.

While the team did win, it wasn’t pretty. An interception on offense, three touchdowns given up, and five three-and-outs nearly lost them the game.

Hagen Hutchinson, kinesiology sophomore, and the team’s quarterback, didn’t do what he wanted to do in the game either.

His goal was to complete more than 75 percent of his passes and throw for at least one touchdown. He ended up completing 18 out of his 40 attempted passes, which is a 45 percent completion average, and threw for one interception with no touchdowns.

He won’t get down on himself though, as he said he will put this game out of his mind and get ready for the next one.

“At the end of the day, if we win the game, the bad stats don’t really matter. I just have to go into practice the following week, prepare better, and make sure that doesn’t happen again,” Hutchinson said.
