Andrea Mendoza-Lespron would make the strongest team in the SGA office. Gray’s effectiveness and professionalism and Mendoza-Lespron’s fresh perspective are our best bet for a successful student government.

I

n case you live under a politicallyapathetic rock, Shayla Owens and Andrew Gray are running for SGA president while Andrea MendozaLespron and Tyler Garcia are running for SGA vice president.

It’s a rarity when there are no bad choices in an election, but we feel confident that no matter who is elected Student Government Association president and vice president, our campus will be in capable hands.

Gray has the leadership experience, not just in campus organizations but in employment history. By far his strongest quality is his knowledge of his own capabilities, now and in the future.

Gray has achievable and realistic goals, such as improving campus safety by improving the police call boxes on campus and the sidewalks.

He also knows his role in getting those goals accomplished and has already gotten the ball rolling before getting elected. He knows that to get things done he has to work with administrators and faculty members, not just the students. Our concern is how he equated the administration on campus to the business executives he’s dealt

with in his past employment. While you need political savvy to appeal to people in charge, we can’t lose sight of student interests in the name of business interests.

We respect Gray for his flexibility and how he embraces the electorate’s feedback, even if it’s not all positive.

He seems to take all comments in stride and has shaped his campaign accordingly.

Although Mendoza-Lespron has seemed to side with Owens thus far, we think she’d make the best vice president. Given some of the social issues recently on campus, MendozaLespron will bring a fresh perspective to the office. Diversity, in all meanings of the word, is especially important in our student government.

Gray and Mendoza-Lespron are bold, have concrete goals that coincide with each other’s agenda, value a tolerant and inclusive campus, and want to make SGA more in tune with the voice of the students. As long as they can work together, there’s very little they can’t accomplish.

I

f you’re like me, this time of year cabin fever can begin to set in. After over two months of cold weather the sun is finally Dylan starting to shine and Pembroke temperatures are on the rise. As the days get longer it’s time to get outside and enjoy the arrival of spring. If you’re looking for a great taste of the outdoors and adventure right here in Wichita Falls, go check out the Wee-Chi-Tah off-road trail.

The Wee-Chi-Tah trail is located along the Wichita river running from Lucy Park to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. It is 13 miles off off-road trail that features rocks, twists, climbs and descents right in the heart of the city. It is open year round (weather permitting) to mountain bikers and those running and walking as well.

The Wee-Chi-Tah trail has been voted the best urban off-road trail in the state of Texas and it is a part of the Hotter N’ Hell Hundred’s mountain bike race and trail run as part of the Triple Threat.

A dedicated group of people maintains the trail. The largest problem facing the trail today is the need to clear all of the dead trees and brush because FEMA and the Corps of Engineers believe it impedes the flow of the river and causes the flooding to be worse. What they are asking is a HUGE amount of hard laborious work. If volunteers cannot complete the work they will bring in their guys and do what they recently did to the concrete side down from Lucy park basically clear cut the trail. That would be devastating to everyone involved as the main appeal of the trail is how wild and unruly it is.

Mostly though, it’s an opportunity for a little adventure,”.

The trail is an important resource for the community and she hopes that everyone will take advantage of it.

Just watch out for the poison ivy!

The Wee-Chi-Tah Trail is a great opportunity for students to get outdoors and be involved in the community.

Jimmy Young who is one of the core volunteers said “The trail isn’t just for us mountain bikers. Anyone is welcome to come walk and run the trail as well.”

A

campus-wide game of tag, known as Humans vs.

Zombies, is played at hundreds of universities across the nation. While there are basic rules for everyone to follow, each university designates moderators to adjust these rules for the individual campus.

With 150 students participating, the game began on March 1 and ended on March 11. The moderators chose one player as the original zombie, and each of the humans were given ID cards to surrender to the zombie that tags them as the game continued.

Mario Ramirez, University Programming Board advisor and game moderator, said, “It’s so chaotic, but it’s really fun. You see some of the hard work that you put into some of these events pay off really fast like that. Everyone’s excited to be hiding, throwing themselves into bushes and running from the classrooms. Everyone enjoys it, so it’s a neat process to watch.”

Moderators set up the missions, take care of the overall environment of the game, and resolve game conflict.

There were five moderators at this year’s game of tag— three student moderators: Juan Mercado, D’Aaron Clayton and Hannah King, and two faculty/staff moderators: Mario Ramirez and AJ Lopez.

Moderator and dental hygiene sophomore Hannah King said, “The best part of being a moderator was meeting different people that I wouldn’t necessarily talk to on my own.”

Zombies, with bandanas around their heads, wait around the Sunwatcher Plaza safe zone trying to tag humans, wearing bandanas on their arms or legs. This was the second mission of the Humans versus Zombies game where humans were required to replenish their water supply and make it back out without getting tagged.

King also said that being moderator wasn’t always fun and games.

King said, “The worst part was dealing with people’s disagreements. A lot of people were trying to find loopholes in the rules based on individual circumstances.”

Moderator and pre-dental junior D’Aaron Clayton agreed with King.

Clayton said, “It was nice not having to deal with the stress of people following me, but the worst part was seeing the creative ability of students to change the rules and control each other. People believed other students over us [moderators].”

Computer science freshman Darien Cortez was the first human to complete the final elite mission, therefore

becoming top human and winner of the game. He said his journey was not always easy.

Cortez said, “I almost got caught outside three different times, so I figured out pretty quickly that I needed to know where the fastest zombies were at all times. My strategy was basically to lay as low as I could.”

Sociology sophomore and original zombie Kirsten Durr said she knew she couldn’t tag everyone without reinforcements, so she tagged psychology sophomore John Smith on the second day. He also happens to be her boyfriend.

Durr said, “We started working together. I started being a decoy and we started acting like partners-in-crime.

Once we became zombies it was very competitive. I still think he needed my help though.”

While Smith said he and Durr had originally agreed on a two-week break from their relationship during the game, he changed his mind once the game started.

Smith said, “I completed the first mission as a human, but I came back to where Kirsten was. It was hot and I knew she hadn’t eaten, so I brought her a gallon of cold water and Chick-Fil-A. I ended up telling her to just tag me, and that same day, I got seven people. Even though she did help me, I still would’ve won without her help.”

Overall, students were receptive to this campus-wide game of tag, according to Ramirez. UPB’s plan is to keep the game going every spring because students seem to really enjoy it.

F

or 115 years Lake Wichita has been a cornerstone in the city’s history. Over the last century the lake, constructed in 1901 and originally used for irrigation to power the electricity power plant, has seen both boom and bust and now, barely supports animal life and doesn’t support recreation.

The Lake Wichita Revitalization Project aims to revamp and improve the lake so that it can continue to be an important part of Wichita Falls for another century.

Daniel Nix, water utilities operation manager at Cypress Water Plant, said Lake Wichita was one of the first man-made lakes to be built in the state of Texas.

In 1920, the city of Wichita Falls bought all the water rights and property for the lake from Wichita Light and Power. The water rights, irrigational rights, and recreational rights for the lake are maintained through the state of Texas.

Nix said the irrigational rights are not being used and haven’t been used in a long time.

“We haven’t used Lake Wichita for a source of drinking water since the ‘60s. Having a canal system from Lake Kemp and Lake Diversion has changed the water quality. It’s made it more salty and we can’t treat that water conventionally like we did in the past, it would have to go through the micro filtration and reverse osmosis process.”

Parts of the lake are eroding into the waters, filling it with debris, and brush. One of biggest problems facing the lake is the silt.

Over time the gradual siltation of the lake has lowered the average depth of the lake from eight to four feet, thus resulting in water that cannot effectively support aquatic life.

Once the ecology of the lake has been brought back the project will turn to the many amenities that have been planned for public use. Four boat ramps will be refurbished and developed to provide boating access to the public along with four new jetties and fishing piers along the dam.

Built as part of the rebuilding process, two beach areas will further enhance recreation.

One beach will be located in Lake Wichita Park and the other will be located near the emergency spillway off of Kemp. Along with adding beaches a wakeboard park and paddle board trail have been proposed. Plans call for the addition of a 2.4 mile paddling trail through Lake Wichita Park that connects to the lake.

This trail will include two launch stations that are ADA accessible and also serve to break up the trail so that canoers, kayakers, paddle boarders can use the trail without having to traverse the entire 2.4 miles. The city will be partnering with Heroes On the Water to ensure that this segment is developed in a way that ensures our wounded veterans from all branches of the military and all people with disabilities will be able to use it.

“Lake Wichita is a wonderful treasure in our backyard and it should provide all the benefits to the community that it possibly can,” said Tom Lang, fisheries supervisor with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Wichita Falls office.

After the revitalization project is completed, the lake will serve as a hub for community activity. The east side of the lake has been slated for commercial development. With the lake in a healthy state this will provide an area for businesses develop right on the water.

SPRING BREAK BEGINS SATURDAY, but students will enjoy an extra two days off this year. While this doesn’t line up with Wichita Falls ISD’s spring break, students are still excited about the additional time away from the stresses of school.

“I’m super glad that I get a little more time to enjoy myself without the stress of academics constantly snapping at my heels,” Eric Arumugam, criminal justice junior, said.

“It’s finally good to be able to have time and do what I want to do and not what the school is asking me to do,” Walter James, business management sophomore, said.

“It gives me even more time than usual to spend with family and friends. I’m excited to get out of Wichita Falls and go back home for a little while,” Hailee Milligan, education sophomore, said.

he final Discover MSU event showcased health sciences and human services on March 11.

Prospective students were able to visit the simulation center, and took part in hands-on learning experiences for fields like radiology and dental hygiene.

“Health sciences has a very distinct advantage that instead of a lecture, they got to go into the labs in the radiology and dental hygiene clinic,” Director of Admissions Dustin Webb said.

With the help of academic advisor Catherine Rudy, Webb came up with what degrees overlap the most and what fields tend to exchange students when they want to switch degrees.

Prospective students were able to attend two sessions in which they could learn more about the field they were interested in along with other fields

of interest.

Sophomore math and computer science double major Ali Khalid is an A-Team tour guide that helped direct students to the different departments during Discover MSU. He said that some prospective students already had an idea of what field they were interested in but once they visited another field, it changed their mind. “[One prospective student] wasn’t decided before this but after her visit, she was sure she wanted to do athletic training,” Khalid said. “That’s what interested her more after learning what it as about.”

Another prospective student said she is interested in nutrition as a major.

“I talked to two professors in athletic training and I like how the get to apply what they learned into a handson situation working with sports teams at the school,” Bridgeport High School junior Brooke Irion said.

Another prospective student said she visited the campus before and it became her first choice.

“I like the campus and the energy here, that’s why I came back for Discover MSU,” YES Prep High School senior Maria Pincon said.

The total number of students that attended Discover Health Sciences was 119 with 50 guests.

Chi Omega hosts charity basketball game TAYLOR BARNETT REPORTER

T

he Chi Omega sisters tipped off their annual Swishes for Wishes charity basketball tournament on March 12, as a part of their Wish Week festivities.

“We raise money for the Make-A-Wish foundation, and we wanted to do something that could get everybody involved on campus who wanted to be a part of it,” said senior in nursing, and organizer of the event, Kimberly Sheehan.

This is the sixth year that

Chi Omega members have put on Swishes for Wishes as a part of their events for Wish Week.

Down from last year’s 200 participants, this year 125 participants divided into 40 teams.

“It has gone pretty good,” said Wynter Taylor, a senior in psychology, and participant in the tournament. “A lot of people came out to play and it’s always nice to raise money for the kids.”

This year’s event featured a DJ which elevated the event, but it still lacked the amount of school involvement that Chi Omega would like to see.

“It’s more fun this year especially with the DJ,” said Nicole Popp, a sophomore in dental hygiene, and second year member of the sorority. “But I think we need to advertise it more to the school, because we know and the players know but we want to get the school more involved.”

Make-A-Wish is a charity organization that raises money to grant the wishes of children with life threatening illness, and is the national philanthropy for the Chi Omega organization. According to Madison Knox, a freshman in education,

and member of Chi Omega its something that MSU’s chapter cares deeply about.

“It’s what we feel passionate about,” said Knox. “People think about the negatives of sororities, and this shows we’re about community.”

According to Sheehan this year Chi Omega‘s goal is to raise $10,000 from their fundraisers and sponsorships, to grant the wish of a local child, which can cost anywhere from $4,500 to $10,000. So far the Chi Omega Sisters have raised more than their $10,000 goal, and are still receiving donations.
