A LITANY FOR MY PEOPLE: Leader:
For my people everywhere singing their slave songs repeatedly: their dirges and their ditties and their blues and jubilees, praying their prayers nightly, bending their knees humbly to an unseen power;
People:
Show us your tender mercies Lord.
Leader:
For my people lending their strength to the years; to the gone years and the now years and the maybe years, washing, ironing, cooking, scrubbing, sewing, mending, hoeing, plowing, digging, planting, pruning, patching, dragging along, never gaining, never reaping, never knowing, and never understanding.
People:

For the cramped bewildered years we went to school to learn to know the reasons why and the answers to and the people who and the places where and the days when, in memory of the bitter hours when we discovered we were black and poor and small and different and nobody wondered and nobody understood;

For my people walking blindly, spreading joy, losing time being lazy, sleeping when hungry, shouting when burdened, drinking when hopeless, tied and shackled and tangled among ourselves by the unseen creatures who tower over omnisciently and laugh;

For my people blundering and groping and floundering in the dark of churches and schools and clubs and societies, associations and councils and committees and conventions, distressed and disturbed and deceived and devoured by money-hungry, glory-craving leeches, preyed on by facile forces of state and fad, novelty by false prophet and holy believer;

Show us your tender mercies Lord.

For my people standing staring trying to fashion a better way from confusion from hypocrisy and misunderstanding, trying to fashion a world that will hold all the people all the faces all the Adams and Eves and their countless generations;

Bless us and let us continue to turn to thee O Lord, our strength and peace.

Dearly beloved brethren: Forasmuch as it pleased Almighty God to put into the heart of his servants to build this House for His worship, let us now fulfill the godly purpose for which we are assembled of rededicating it to the honor of God’s most holy name. To the glory of God the Father, who has called us by His grace; To the honor of His Son, who loved us and gave himself for us; To the praise of the Holy Spirit, Who illumines and sanctifies us;

OUR DEAN

REV. DR. BERNARD KEELS Reverend Dr. Bernard “Skip” Keels is a native of Birmingham, Alabama, and is married to Christine Dean Keels. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree (Honors) from Haverford College, awarded the Master of Divinity Degree from Yale University, and was the recipient of the Rockefeller Theological Fellowship. He received the Doctor of Ministry Degree from the McKendree School of Religion. In 2008, Keels was appointed Director of Morgan State University’s Memorial Chapel. Prior to his appointment to Newark United Methodist Church, Reverend Keels served as senior pastor of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. He also served for six years as district superintendent of the Baltimore West District of the Baltimore-Washington Conference. Before becoming a district superintendent, he served as pastor of the A.P. Shaw United Methodist Church in Washington, DC. Reverend Keels has served as a delegate to the 1992, 1996 and 2000 General Conferences of the United Methodist Church. At the 1995 Annual Conference, he was nominated to lead a delegation to the 1996 General and Jurisdictional Conference in Denver, Colorado. He currently serves on the General Commission on Communications, chairs the Northeastern Jurisdiction Committee of Appeals, is a member of the Northeast Jurisdiction Episcopacy (uh.pi.skuh.puh.see) Committee, and serves on the boards of the United Methodist Publishing House, Yale Divinity School, Goodwill Industries, and the Addict Referral Organization.
