Frances Wheeler Society $100,000 - $499,999

In 1885 State Senator Solomon Comstock introduced a bill to establish a normal school and donated six acres of land for its site. Two years later, construction began. The Moorhead Normal School became the fourth state normal school in Minnesota.

In 1893, Moorhead Normal School built its first dormitory, and Frances Wheeler was named preceptress. President Lord called her “a rare woman, a born genius, a woman whom to know was a privilege and association with her a liberal education in domestic art.” Wheeler Hall later served as the normal school, the teachers college, and the state college until campus expansion necessitated its demise in 1964.

Livingston Lord Society $500,000 - $999,999 Livingston Lord became Moorhead Normal School’s first president in 1888. Minnesota Governor Andres McGill described President Lord as ‘young, energetic, full of wisdom and what is better, full of sense.”

In addition to his duties as president, he taught Latin and “mental science.” He served as president for 11 years and hired 44 teachers during his term.

Praeceptor Society $75,000 - $99,999 The first Praeceptor(Latin for teacher) was published by the Moorhead Normal Senior class of 1915-16 and dedicated to President Frank Weld. 1887 Society $50,000 - $74,999 On February 22, 1887, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed a bill appropriating $60,000 for construction of the Moorhead Normal School. Moorhead celebrated with a “Grand Banquet and Testimonial,” a gala affair to honor the “splendid efforts” of Solomon G. Comstock.

According to the Moorhead Daily News, it was the “largest, most brilliant and successful event of the kind ever occurring in the Red River Valley.”

Old Main Society $25,000 - $49,999 Moorhead Normal School’s first building was a three story structure of Kasota stone and brick.

The three arches of Old Main’s entrance became symbols for the school and were used in logos for half a century after the building was destroyed by fire in 1930.

The MSUM Chamber Singers is a volunteer organization created to share music with the Fargo-Moorhead community. This semester, they are specializing in music of the Renaissance Era (1450-1600), specifically focusing on European madrigals in a variety of languages. They primarily travel to local nursing homes throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area to share a cappella music with residents. They often accept local invitations as well, especially to share carols around the winter holidays. Dr. Erynn Millard, Director of Choral Activities, serves as the artistic director for the ensemble, capably assisted by music education majors Erik Hagfors, Cassandra Johnson, Fate Maxon, and Axel Xiong. Singing engagements are coordinated by student Rebecca Hagert.
